Many of those guys look really tough.

Especially S-901 Hikotai's boys.

Japan's good shape amazes me so much. I would like to be in a good situation as yours whenever I reach closing days of 1945.

It looks that over the course of the match you haven't grabbed many points from army losses. May I ask you where else you've farmed points, then? I have always been prone to believe that army loss points and a/c "trading" are the most reliable ways to put a lot of distance between your opponent and the autovictory.
I am starting to believe I'm having a very wrong approach at this regard.

… I' not sure why you think airframe attrition is not good to stave off AV. It's the only VP generator I have now, and it's getting me 100-200 VPs every day he Strat bombs now.

Well, the day you posted results above he lost 244 AC … Given that a big number of those are 4E, you earned closer to 400VP that day. GREAT job!!!

It's 1946!!!

I never thought I'd play a game this far, but if I did I was sure jets would be involved. I still haven't seen the P-80. Where are they? Maybe Japan can field a jet before the Allies. I am now starting production of the Ki-94-II at 30/month, so barring sudden factory destruction I should be able to test those out.

The Allies continue to bomb the crap out of troops in China and move masses into Chungking to reduce forces there. They're up to nearly 8K AV now, and a LOT more are still pouring in.

Looking at the VP screen below I notice the base points for Japan are quite low. He will gain VPs for both Chungking and Chengtu on the Allied side, but I think Japan won't lose too many, since they're already out of supply. Troop loss points will be a major Allied area of gain in the next few months, but Strat bombing aat least offers some permanent points to Japan as well.

It might be tight to get the 2:1, but I think Dan will do it. If it's getting close to the wire he'll take some risks and send in the navy, getting a foothold on the Home Islands, I'm sure.

China now. Mostly sieges and chases. Very boring to play this stage in game. I just do a bit of pilot management, send troops fleeing where necessary, and hit the end turn button.

January 2-3, 1946

The beginning of the end happened at Chungking on the 2-3rd. The forts were lowered to 4 by a massive force up to 12kAV. Yikes!

In other news the Allies employ very effective sweeps at Shimonoseki and still some CAP is around to hit a few bombers. I'll now restrict range a bit since that base has little left to defend.

Chungking falls! The base VP totals don't change too much actually, and the IJA loses about 800 VPs in troop losses to only about 40 for the Allies. Of course more losses will come as these troops are chased down.

More sweeps today. The Allies send in the Twin Mustangs, which surprisingly don't do so well. Overall the Allied sweeps do get 3:2 but of course all over Japanese bases, so the pilots game is probably still going our way here. Getting these air loss points really helps the cause in the late going here.

How are your fighter pools looking? I can't imagine how long I could go with losing 300 frontline fighters daily. Ugh.

Ugh.

Quote a while if he loses 200+ too!! This is a great ratio for this time in game, and this scale of sweeps is a bit rare.

My pilots pools were worse about a year ago. Once I got the training groups things have been fine. I've converted most of them now to kamis, which in these groups fly CAP with 1/3 of the pilots while having a larger group of them still training up and getting better.

The pilot equation has been going toward the Japanese for a long time, and most groups, even those that have lost pilots to these sweeps, would have lost less than the Allies. I'll be very curious to see what the Allied pilots look like by the end of the game.

Sure, but that is somehow a vector he didn't want to pursue. He's sat on those bases for over a year. I mean a place where he can pick up more troop and base points.

The Allies grind away at Liuchow and Hankow, slowly getting the advantage.

They pick off survivors from Chungking on the ground and from the air, and troop losses continue to pile up points for him. Nearly even now.

Defeatist!

Look at that fuel! Of course, you have no supply, manpower, HI, refineries, resources, naval shipyard, merchant shipyard, armament, armor, etc. where to use it, but look at that fuel!

What's your endgame, Obvert? You going until the game ends (March 1946?), or autovictory or something else?

I've got gazillions of HI, plenty of fuel, huge stores of armaments and even some vehicles. I just don't (again) have the one thing that allows me to use any of them; supplies.

It's hard to watch a 30 minute replay and look at the turn realising the only action I can take is to move fighter groups to a base that actually has enough supply to replace their airframes!

Until 2:1. I believe in VPs.

Do you think the endgame will be at the 2:1 threshhold or by calendar first?

It's really up to Dan, isn't it? He can choose to sit back and finish off every last device of the China Expeditionary Army and then go for Kwangtung guys in Korea while Strat bombing at night every few days. He might win just doing that.

Or he could try something more exciting. I think he has the power to simply push his way to VP victory at any moment by invading wherever he wants in the Home Islands. That he hasn't I guess means he still thinks the dark side has some teeth. I'm glad but I think he has more confidence in my forces than I do at this point.

As long as you have an effective air arm and kamikazes, I at least, would approach an amphibious invasion with great caution.

Sure. They are at the ready, but the DS by now is bigger than my LBA and KB combined, plus he has the tools to sweep away CAP at any one point for a day, then trash the fields. He has swept hard in the past few weeks, but he hasn't followed it up with anything other than strategic bombing so far.

If he handles it like he usually does, with about 2,000 ships in one hex, he can go anywhere. Some kamis could hit but nothing that would stop an invasion, and once he's got a foothold it's all over. The IJ would also lose about 2,000 airframes a day in a scenario like that, so any VP loss would be made up pretty easily from base points and air loss VPs.

I'm starting to understand why late war AARs are sporadic and tend to show actions over weeks rather than days. This was has devolved into Allied Strat bombing, sweeps and massive armies roaming China looking for straggling IJA troops.

The flak and NF still get some points for the bad guys, but that's my only hope of pushing up the permanent VP score. He seems reluctant to do anything more exciting or involved, which is probably smart.

The Allies got about 2:1 on sweeps, with about 150 IJ airframes destroyed, thanks to this monster effort from the USN CVs that moved 6-7 hexes from Kagoshima.

A bit quieter on the 10th, but huge sweeps of Hiroshima on the 11th. I think he wants to clear that base! I've only shown a small portion below, but there were upwards of 1,000 fighters sweeping. It goes about 2:1 for the Allies, with about 190 losses for the IJ.

On these turns more sweeps and I clear out the tired groups at Hiroshima, but in the fatigue fro sifting through a 45 minute replay where I tried to escape every battle. I simply forgot to add back in more CAP groups.

The Allies happened to notice and struck on the 13th. Not as bad as it could have been but not great. The fields are closed so I'll put CAP around it all and hope I can catch something that isn't prepared for a fight on the 14th.

Obvert - I've thoroughly enjoyed your AAR and hope you will grant us some summarizing words when the campaign draws to a close. Kudos to you for pressing this one to the (almost) end!

Yeah, I don't recall any AAR which survived to 1946. I would gladly see your industry screens. I suspect manpower never played any role in planning? How many pilots are there still in school? Have you moved all oil and resources, before Allies cut off routes? How is the state of your merchant fleet? And what is the state of cut off garrisons on islands? Is there shortage of anything (well, except supply)?
