SUBS: His subs have been on a tear lately. Every turn something is hit.

CBI: So the Lashio bombing begins and is off to a decent start. No opposition at least. The base looks to have about 60% damage after two days.

More dramatically, Torsten sends the kitchen sink against Taung Gyi, but his fighters didn't fly the sweeps and he didn't escort. Bombers took a beating, losing about 150 planes of all types to about 35 for the Japanese on the day. He did close the base though, and that causes some problems. The troops are wide open to air strikes, and I foresee a lot of those once his bombers recover. Or maybe sooner. He's definitely trying out the hammer right now.

We did get the valley bases of Mandalay and Schwebo by paras. I expect a counter paradrop soon preceded by annihilation of the IJA troops from the air. Still, suply routines take a while to get moving in certain directions, and even breaking it this once could give us some time to move more troops in. I hope!

I bombarded on the Arakan to make sure there were no new surprises there recently moved in. Looks the same as for the past months. The last time he tried a DA he lost about 20k troops.

SO PAC: More jousting here in the air. Nothing serious. The Aussies get Nadzab, which is a big potential airbase. I'll try to hit Lae soon to get to supply behind and destroy the closest field to support these forward troops.

Great day in the air! Why doesn't he sweep, or do you think he tried to and they didn't fly for whatever reason?

Poor bombing results with those Helen's at 8K, seems like a fair amount of flak.

This is an interesting game, given the fiasco that was Pearl Harbor way back in 1941.

Historiker is a bit of an all or nothing player so far. He seems content to build up massive force then try to bludgeon the Japanese into submission along narrow fronts. This could work for him here, especially with no SL. It's actually not a bad way to go since the force can be applied all to one spot, plus without the beta to lessen coordination of air strikes, I'm finding the solid mass of bombers unstoppable.

His sweeps all would have come from Chittagong. One base. I'm pretty sure he just had bad weather. He sent me one Hellcat group pic and it looked very ready to roll, with no fatigue and high morale, but didn't. All your eggs, as they say.

It's interesting for me too. I decided somewhere after my naval traps failed in the IO that I was going to have to prepare a very defensive plan. I was influenced a bit by Capt Cruft at that point and decided on a modified, late developing 'Hive' style defense. So the background prep by engineers is going on around the inner perimeter, and I'm using all PPs to buy out troops to garrison those areas, I've kept the outer perimeter intentionally light on forces. Burma has the majority because that's where most of his stuff is (more than I'd thought even). It's intended as a holding force though, and economically I'm just trying to save, save, save.

Currently up to 5.3 million fuel, 5 million supply globally. Almost nothing left out in the deep Cent Pac and only a delaying force in So Pac. Each of the Marianas is approaching readiness. A division, CD guns, some arty, and soon a brigade for each as well. Level 6-7 forts.

Northern New Guinea will get some good troops. Sarmi is a intended to be a hardpoint with Biak a major air node. Ambon will be a tough nut, as will Timor I hope. Other than that, much of the late stuff will be heading to the islands between Kyushu and Taiwan. Good forces in the PI. The Kuriles wil continue to be developed and garrisoned more heavily.

It's nice having a buffer in China. I'm working to fortify the coast, and there's enough industry left that China supports itself.

CBI: THE ALLIES STRIKE! THE IJA HOLDS!!!

Unbelievably, the 2k AV of very experienced IJA divisions manages to hold off 8k+ of the best the Allies have to offer. I don't know how this happened, but I'm doing cartwheels!

One thing I noticed is that we have a (+) for leaders. He only has one HQ in this pile. We have two with great leaders in hex plus the Burma army and Southern army both in range. That's a huge advantage.

The losses make this much more serious than it could have been and a day 2 attack seems unlikely given his probable supply constraints and the amount of losses and disablements on the other side.

So. In about three days a tank division will enter the hex, and in another 2-3 days two more crack divisions will arrive should we hold that long. Two days after that another two will make it. So in a week we'll have potentially a very effective blockade. That may be too much time if he can strike again in the next few days.

I'll risk direct bombing of the stack with the 150 Helens in the area to burn supply. Bettys will continue to hit Lashio to kill supply. Defensive fighters are ready to move back into a fully repaired Taung Gyi and I'll keep hitting Ramree and maybe even Akyab to keep the short range fighters away.

This is looking up!

SUBS: Another tanker lost near Kendari. The Seal. He's doing really well with subs and this with the best ASW air coverage I can put together.

SO PAC: Sporadic bombing and lots of P-38 sweeps. Looks like he'll walk from Nadzab to Saidor. Not a goo choice if you ask me. I'm planning to move in rotating BB bombardments to hit this Aussie division once it's there. May not save the base, but could wreck the division.

October 1-2, 1943

SUBS: The KIX hits an xAKL at Darwin, but the PB escorting knocks it with 6 hits, at least one direct.

CBI: On the 30th bombers heading to Ramree were jumped for the first time by LR CAP coming from Akyab. This base only has around 60 fighters and 40 bombers listed, so I decided to hit it directly. Sweeps decimated the CAP and only a few planes were left to disrupt the bombing, none of which did. On the day the base was hit hard and nearly if not completely closed. A number of bombers were destroyed on the ground and the sweepers got better than 3:1 on the day against older Allied airframes.

Our bombing went back to Ramree for the next day to keep good damage and reduce supply on that base before returning to Akyab in case of better LR CAP from Chittagong showing up.

Sweeps hit Taung Gyi, and the defenders did very well right up until the P-47s showed up! I was experimenting with a high/low CAP setting, putting Georges at max and Tojos layered under 10k. It worked well against the Hellcats, Hurris and even the Corsairs, and it wasn't just the Georges do ing the shooting. Several kills were from the Tojo IIc down low.

Because the P-47s have an extra 1k max altitude they got the dive added to their already impressive stats and wiped the floor with all groups irrespective of altitude. I need the Frank badly, which arrives in 2-3 weeks.

SO PAC: The Allies are getting bold with their naval strikes, leaving certain groups on very long range settings including area around Rabaul. I wasn't expecting this and happened to be sweeping with some fighters on Oct. 1 as some Banshees escorted by around 60 P-38s arrived. Although 20 P-38Gs were shot down the Banshees put some hits on two Yusen-N transports, sinking one and severely damaging the other. CAP was tripled for the 2nd but low flying B-25D1 still made it through.

Not bad for the two days, and his replacements shoudn't be able to take this for long. The P-47 sweeps are a problem though and I really need the Frank, still several weeks away from production.

I forgot to mention that as predicted there was no follow-up ground battle. I would guess the units with low disruption, probably some of the big tank units and better divisions, were still low on supply.

The tank division is due next turn in reserve mode. If it arrives in the middle of the battle it could still go into combat if it looks bad for the IJA, so that's a plus. One more RF gun AT arty unit just arrived and two more are on the way as well. I'm also sending some more AA guns now that it looks like this could turn into a long battle. They're railing from Toungoo to Taung Gyi now.

All units have already recovered disabled devices a bit and are lowering disruption quickly. The HQs help for sure, plus a shipment of 50k supply just landed in Rangoon. We still have the better internal lines, and the Allied supply line is dangerously long to any gray road/rail link to India.

On the Arakan side a Thai division has just built a level 6 fort!!!

I've never seen such high forts from a unit in the field. I'm tempted to pull the other IJA units back to see what would happen if the Allies attack.

I'll leave them for now but it's nice to know I might have this option should the Allies attempt to flank around to Prome.

Obvert,

Do you think the RF Gun Battlaions do any good? Mine seem to take up space, and never really hit the Allied vehicles that hard. I guess you can't expect wonders from so small a group, but I am beginning to think their use should be on islands.

If I recall correctly they are air transportable.

Well, if you look at the previous combat he had over twice as many tanks knocked out as the Japanese. This has to be some of the AT guns, both in divisions and in these units. They're much more effective when dug in. I also try to get them at least average leaders. Hard to say how much they help as these are in the divisions too, but they can't hurt. They may not destroy a Sherman, but they could damage it. Better than letting them sit in Manchuria!

And those damaged Shermans are then easily to turn into asploded Shermans... also don't forget that a lot of the armor that comes from the British is the Stuart I and Stuart VI (Armor 45 and 60), and the Grant (Armor 65), all 3 of which are significantly less durable than an M4 Sherman (Armor 90).

The 47mm AT gun, which I think the RT units get access to very early on (?), is a pretty decent upgrade over the 37mm.

These are all 47mm now. Doesn't look like they should kill many medium tanks, but could damage them and get penetration on the light tanks.

October 3, 1943

SUBS: Got the Nautilus which had been sitting at Kaveing. Four old DDs came down from Truk and nailed it off the bat.

CBI: My tanks have made it, the divisions should arrive in 60, 48 near Taung Gyi tomorrow. That will make it 3k+ AV in x3 and on a decent supply path. If he can't dislodge us with the next attack and these troops dig, this block will never be moved. I've got two more divisions at Taung Gyi just starting to walk to the hex. It looks like he's backing some units out to try a flanking move into the jungle offroad. I'll move at least one of these divisions through the hex and onward to dig on the yellow road in front of the river. I could send another to dig in the hex on the other side of the river to, but not sure it's necessary yet. I'll have a look at what's coming first.

Moving the bombing around. Hit Ramree again and Lashio. Trying to make sure I keep damage on the critical bases close to the front and where supply may flow and which could be used for shorter range fighters. I just noticed something interesting in terms of supply movement. Bhamo is empty. Not for long.

This is his main supply path and if I cut that it could mean some serious disruption to the movement routines here.

SO PAC: The Allies are really reaching out with their naval strikes hitting at max range on North New Guinea and sinking one xAK while damaging another. I'll aim to test this tomorrow as 4 x DD move to Rabaul. If they come again it won't be pretty this time with 250 fighters now in that base in a layered CAP.

The Allies also swept Rabaul with three Corsair groups and 120+ P-38s. The CAP got 1:1 vs the Corsairs which was amazing, then beat off the combined sweep of all of the Lightning groups arriving simultaneously. Not many P-38s lost, but they weren't too effective either since these big combined group sweeps seem to shorten the combat. Our CAP is getting tougher, even though there are still a lot of Oscars and zeros here. The Jack group will be beefed up as more fragments join in the fight after being spread out repairing, and the Nicks are also moving here. He doesn't have enough bombers in area that I've seen to be able to close it yet in one big strike.

CENT PAC: Interesting news out here North of Wake. The subs in area are getting high DL and one was attacked by an Avenger out of range of LBA. Hmmmmm. The KB is ready.

Is he coming back to Marcus for another try?

CENT PAC: Jakes based on Marcus located a large Allied force and attacked it on the 4th. They met 223 Hellcats on CAP!

So they are coming. The KB is in position at Guam and will attempt to get in position 8 hexes from Marcus near Pagan to also keep LBA somewhat in play. Al but the CVE TF can make this 14 hex run and should be in good position should the Allies go right into Marcus. If they don't we're suddenly caught in the headlights and the surprise factor lost. I think it's worth the risk though and there are still options for unexpected moves the next day.

I've got about 5-6 D4Y3 units upgraded and operational now, but some of the KB is still D4Y1, so I can't yet make a full 8 hex strike. It would be nice to hit the invasion fleet with CV kept behind out of range. I'm sure he's brought more this time and Marcus may go down. It'll be tough to hold and use though except as a searching base considering the position out here and lack of any supporting bases nearby.

This is a huge moment in game. I'm wondering whether a fight here is the right plan, but each month the Allies get stronger, so I want to use the KB when it has a chance to do something.

SUBS: I've brought forth 12 midget subs (and two MTB) at Marcus. Lets se if they get lucky. Either way they could help with increasing DL and identification of ships as well as delaying them to target.

CBI: More sweeps at Taung Gyi and the Georges do well. Odd only a group of Corsairs and one groupd of Hurri Ic flew here.

We paradropped Bhamo and took the base. That will throw a wrench in supply routes, but he may drop right back. The Allies retook Schwebo with Marine paratroops. That base still has a lot of damage on the fields.

SO PAC: The naval strikes were left on and they hit the Rabaul CAP wall as predicted. A good number of Banshees, B-25D-G versions and P-38Gs downed.

Marcus Island

The KB will move out and should arrive within 8 hexes of Marcus tomorrow. The Allies are close enough to move in and if they do they might be hit without hope of a reply. I've moved in some LBA including Georges to LR CAP a SCTF with the KB. LBA search of Dinah III, Emilys and G3M3 can easily reach the area and have a pretty good DL on the Allied TFs already.

About ten subs are closing from patrols in the Cent Pac area and twenty are moving from the Marianas while another five move up from So Pac.

The KB is shown here. Only 9 CVs, a few CVL, some five CVE and the four CS cruisers with float fighters and Jakes on board. With surprise it could be effective. At the least it should give him pause.

Burma

The two reinforcing divisions also made it into the contested hex in Burma. He must be having more supply issues than I suspected as he hasn't even bombarded since the last DA. Either that or he's luring more of my forces into the area and planning a move behind to cut them off. Probably not though since the US CVs are in the Pacific and most of his free troops are right here.

There are 8k+ AV here and 4k+ AV on the coast near Ramree. I see a few other small concentrations moving forward now near Lashio.

Another two divisions arrive in two days and one at least will move through. I found a brigade to be at least one of the several units that may be attempting to flank here. I'll bomb again soon for more info, but so far it's not much to worry about.

Big turn. Feeling the jitters. These days can make or beak the game for one side or the other.

After doing the turn once I actually deleted the file and had to do it again, but I'm glad I did. I found even more things to do and ways to get LBA groups involved. Luckily several new IJNAF fighter groups arrived the week before and were in range of the Marianas.

Off to sleep now! But I'll be playing through it all in my mind as I drop off!

I do the same thing. Lie in bed thinking about the war.

5 October, 1943

SUBS: The SSX Ha-9 found the Allied fleet but couldn't get a hit. A massive amphib TF. Lots of good assault shipping, but what's on there? This is just Marcus Island!

CENT PAC: No fireworks today. He held off two hexes and we both have eyes on each other now. The subs will close around Marcus in a massive net tomorrow and LBA will keep up the search but I made the tough decision to move the KB back for now at least. My first choice would have been to move past Marcus to a sport 8 hexes away from the SE, hoping he moved in front of the base to shield his amphibs, but alas the DDs couldn't make another flank sprint and that hex was 13 hexes from the previous position. Too risky to not get everyone there and also be so far out on a limb.

I am guessing he'll go ahead with the landings, but seeing a stong CV force here may give him pause. It woud be great if we both pulled back for the day!

BURMA: Strangely my escort fails to protect bombers going for Akyab and the defenders take a toll on the ineffective Helens and escorting fighters. Not sure what happened there excet that sweeps came late.

He sent two small sweeps to Taung Gyi again which got mauled. Also, the Chindits took back Bhamo immediately.

SO PAC: Hellcats sweep Rabaul and the CAP gets about 1:1 against them. The massive sweeps of Corsairs and P-38s hit, but again these battles aren't so bloody, and on the day the air numbers are roughly even.

Marcus Island - Day 2

Here is where we ended up on the day. It looks like the Allies brought every surface combat ship in the USN!

We'll move back to near Pagan for tomorrow. If he sticks close to the Marcus invasion ships this could mean we are out of his search range making the next day an interesting one. Having good DL on his forces and moving back into the darkness could give an advantage should we decide to engage the following day. I'm also holding out hope that subs can attrit his forces. Classic IJN thinking, right?

In the pic notice the subs around Marcus. There are now 16 midget subs there! In addition two fleet subs are within 2 hexes of the Allied fleets and about 5-6 are trailing in from the East. All of the TFs a few hexes behind the KB are the 20+ subs that will be in screening positions tomorrow in case he moves forward. More will arrive in a few days from the South.

Sadly, don't get too excited about the midgets. What is their detection levels? If it is high try to get them to move one hex out into deep water and return, fuel allowing.

Good luck, I think you made the right decision.

PS: You are doing absolutely great against his fighters!

If they still have DL tomorrow I could also create new TFs to mimmick redeployment. Obviously these things wouldn't really be hanging around for days in the ocean even if the game allows them that, and the new TF should have no DL.

The surprise would have made this a pretty good day if they'd been in range I think, but now it makes sense not to be hanging out in full view.

Our CAP rules allow defensive fighters to be at any altitude, but sweepers have to be using their second best maneuver band. So Hellcats and P-47s can sweep us with the dive, but the others have to stay at 31k. That helps, although we haven't done badly against Hellcats either.

6 October, 1943

SUBS: The net closes but the Allies disappear! No sign of them. I hope they're not going for the Kuriles!

I sent an Emily group to Marcus to check things out into the deep Cent Pac area.

BURMA: Closed up Schwebo so no transport can send supply or troops in that way. He's trying to move the parafragment across to take Mandalay and I'll try to hit it with Nicks at 100ft tomorrow. They have expert strafing and about 50 low ground skill, so good enough I'd say.

CENT PAC: All air groups n the KB are stood down to rest and fix damaged airframes. Even 5 days of flying and some groups have planes up to 80-90 damage levels. The different TFs are heading to various bases to replenish. I've had to divert a 70k fuel TF this way from around Formosa to get some top-ups to the KB and company. Ahhhh, the Empire.

Managed to air drop a new Naval Guard unit onto Marcus and if there's time I'll send more out there. I can remove the engineers now as forts are at level 6. I should be able to get AV near to 200. That's almost double what it was when he first landed and was repulsed.

SO PAC: More sweeps. Rabaul groups hold their own, downing a decent number of Corsairs and Hellcats. A few P-38s. I need the Frank here. I need Georges here.

ECON: Just got R n D finished on the Oscar IIIa. That is a pretty good upgrade for CAP purposes. I'll now have 3 x 30 researching the Oscar IV which should arrive in mid-44. The Frank will come in late October. The Frances is now in production at 30 a month and will be included in the Marianas defense zone soon. I'd like an upgrade for the Betty unit in Burma to this plane too to hit the supply runs to Akyab. I've been letting them go so far, but this plane can get in so fast and hit so hard, it will be used once I have it there.

Not bad again in the air. It was 120+ P-38s sweeping a few days ago and this turn only around 65. The frequency of mission favors Japan at this point, whereas next year that might reverse as even more and better Allied planes arrive.

SUBS: The Jake group at Marcus finds the Allied fleets a few hexes out in the night phase. No subs were vectored in to strike though. Two subs have been hit by ASW air and are heading back to the HI to patch up. Nearly all are in the area now and will close in. The Midgets are ready and will reform into TFs each day to lose DL.

BURMA: Lashio is hit pretty well and the Nicks get to the Schwebo troops knocking out the parafragment there. Tomorrow Akyab is the target and I'll LR CAP the paras that took Bhamo briefly as he's sending milk runs in to hit them.

CENT PAC: The Allies pop back in to three hexes from Marcus. I'll get subs roving around that spot as he'll surely move tomorrow. I'm guessing he lands now at last. He's hung around and must assume the KB has pulled back.

This would not be a good assumption if I'd played this slightly better. All is well with the ships after refueling but the air groups have been resting and suddenly all of the damaged planes have overwhelmed the onboard maintenance crews. The extra airframes have now pushed some CVs over the flight limits. So now I'm just sitting and waiting for these to be fixed out of range of a dash by the Allies, patrolling one hex off of Guam. No DL though and only one sub contact in the area up near Pagan.

They should be ready after tomorrow's turn which may be good timing anyway. I'd like to move SE and if he does land get ready to hit any ships returning to Cent Pac if his CVs sty forward, or calculating an 8 hex strike possibility from the shadows. To stop that he has to put his CVs to one or another side of Marcus, or risk them in front of the base. I can use those situations if they do happen.

SW PAC: A lone Aussie division sits now in Saidor having taken the base with damaged fields and port, and I've set bombers to hit Lae to hopefully continue any supply issues in area and deny the field as a forward base. His only fields here over level 1 are PM (8), Buna (5) and Milne Bay (6). I'm moving BBs from Babeldaob and another big CA led TF from Soerabaja. Within a week there will be bombardments. An AKE and TKs are heading toward Hollandia now.

I know FOW can come up with some odd TF compositions but your pic from post 650 looks odd.

Have you been made to react to a feint?

He must know you will fight for Marcus. Only other explanation is he had some serious problems getting his TF in place.

I guess it could be, but all of the available USN CVs minus Wasp seem to be here plus all but one CVL. Also a big amphib TF. That's no assurance but there is also a massive assault shipping TF. I think it's possible he's trying to draw me out into a CV duel on terms he chooses. I chose the first day then backed off. If he lands there is no certainty it'll be a one day job. I think he wants a CV fight before that so I can't tee off from 8 hexes.

Also there really are a lot of subs here. He's starting to hit with SBD really hard on em and may just want a few more days of that before a landing try. My guess is that it'll come in within two more days.

Here is a good shot of the Allied TF and our sub positions. Although his air ASW is getting tough, over half the subs here are still without a DL. More are entering the region from the south as two head North to Yokohama for repairs.

Tomorrow he could easily land. We'll see.

SUBS: Two more I-boats hit by ASW air as the Allied CVs hang around but don't land again today. They shift by only a few hexes, but wisely he's staying a few back from Marcus just in case the KB rushes in. Maybe he's waiting for his own sub screen to arrive and help shield the landings?

BURMA: Some sweeps go into Akyab but the defending P-40s do really well even against experienced Georges. We still get almost 2:1 on the day, so I can't complain, and get some on the ground once the Helens come in and plaster the base, most likely closing it. He still hasn't used LR CAP from Chittagong here.

There is also a small tussle with units from the Chinese bases hitting some A-36 and Beauforts. The A-36 defends really well and gets almost even results.

CENT PAC: Still dancing around Marcus.

Near the Marianas I still have a few CVs with too many repairs going on but I'll move to a base tomorrow to make sure extra planes are removed and flight ops are possible for all CVs.

SW PAC: The Aussies have started out marching toward Madang through the jungles. They might not like the battlewagons on the way here in a few days.

This turn I closed Lae again, and in the next few I'll look to top up damage to Saidor and work on the supply these guys have, which has to be negligible.

Ok, that is a pretty goofy attack on Marcus.

Showing the KB certainly bought several more days for them. What do the defenders look like? Did you fly in more troops?
