NF Pools

For NF I'm going from previous experience and staying with the ones that seemed to work best. I'm also building the Nick Id which I did not build previously. I'll be able to set up soon, in April. I am thinking 1 x 30 for this. I'll have about 3-4 groups that can use it, and based on current game situation should have time to build pools before they start getting whittled down.

I may even be able to use the Randy Ki-102c this game, which would be fun. I didn't go in for the Denko as it arrives too late.

I'll may also build some Frances NF as they are sturdy and fast enough with decent armament.

Your detailed summaries are very helpful. From my perspective the FrankR was the critical airframe which provided the biggest bang for my buck and allow me to provide some degree of resistance well into 45.

My good sir, your Frank production is far too low.

I agree!!!

I'm waiting for the Ki-84b and then the Ki-84r to come online. By 7/44 I should have the b which will bring me to 195. Then when the r arrive around 11/44 I'll have 255.

What do you think? I'm trying to be conservative with the production numbers. I'm also very aware that I'll have to rely more and more on the IJAAF as the groups for IJN disappear in summer 44. I'll also have the J2M5 and N1K5 by 9/44 at least so the IJN groups left will be very good airframes.

The Sam doesn't seem to want to repair factories. Very frustrating. I've had one factory at 25(5) for about three months!

Meh to even making the -b, unless you have to for some reason. I'm not familiar with PDU Off because I'm never playing that.

Since the -a upgrades directly to the -r, I don't see why you wouldn't just increase -a production.

I'm not sure if 255 will be enough since you are getting a late start on the production in general. Mine came much earlier than yours, so I have had the luxury of building the pools up before 11/44, for example. I can't remember exactly how many I'm producing, or rather the max capacity (I might have one or two factories off at present), but the total is definitely in the mid-200s. I'm not certain if it will be enough.

Replace the leader.

Yes!!!

wait a minute ...

Yes. You need to make that factory great.

Bad luck on the repairs. I don't think my game date is that far ahead of yours, but I've already received several months of advancement from mine.

I loved the Frank "r" in my first long game, much more so because of how much Jocke hated it! We changed our altitude HR because of this plane.

I'm curious though about the "b" which I didn't use at all in that game. Looking forward to trying it out.

I'm interested in the 4 x 20mm of the "b" with two of them CL. It's meant to be the best anti-4E plane in game. The N1K5 will also be good in that role. I didn't get to try either of these in my previous game, and I definitely want to here.

If pools get low I'll just use older airframes for a while. Wait. Build up the Franks. Use them to surprise. I'm not concerned about not having enough total fighters. Especially since this game has just slowed down a lot due to recent events. The low CAP is helping to conserve them better anyway.

March 27-28, 1944

SO PAC: Joe sends in the marauders as several Fletcher groups create havoc around Northern New Guinea. The IJN loses several Es and at least 4 DDs on the day. Luckily a few were close to base and could be disbanded to put out fires quickly. Both of his TFs ended up in range of strikes, and only one was targeted. It got attention from around 30 Judys in both the morning and afternoon but the flak was heavy and no hits were recorded. About 8 Judys lost on the day too!

This came as we had pulled a good CL/DD TF back to use as fas transport, and it didn't engage at all. Two DDs hit mines at Hollandia and one was also nailed by RO-66 with one fish.

On the 28th I tried to run two CL led TFs in to engage the low ammo DDs but neither found them in the night. Lost two DMS in more fights and the DDs got away clean.

OZ: Bombed Darwin to little effect. Lots of AA here, so I'll rely on the naval bombardments to suppress the base for a while. He looks to be moving something toward Katherine here.

The KB is now back into the shadows.

These ships are already tough to hit, but flak is noticeably tougher now than earlier in the war. Sucks not to get them sitting out there with no LR CAP.

SUBS: Allied subs are haunting the lanes between Ambon and Darwin, and I see some moving into Darwin. Either to refuel, or possibly to lay mines. I might just send some Es in there to see what's new.

SO PAC: Franks sortie unexpectedly against Hellcats at Hansa Bay. I'd left them on after moving them in here. They knock down a few defenders before settling in to their usual CAP role.

OZ: The cruisers go in on the 29th and get a decent hit on the troops and fields at Darwin. Not great, but keeps up the damage. The key is to keep the Allies from building forts, improving fields or recovering squads. Hitting supply is also positive.

On the 31st though they hit hard. A daylight bombardment, which is highly effective. Overall 8 squads destroyed and 101 disabled.

Landings by APDs at Groote Eylandt go in just fine but our Jakes sortie and get multiple hits on them. Both end up with "heavy fires, heavy damage."

April 1-2, 1944

SUBS: The Allied subs hit pay dirt on the 3rd, getting one fish into Yamashiro. The BB continued on the mission, but has 28 (27) flood damage and will need a few months down time now. Trying to take an alternate route back to avoid sub clumping.

SO PAC: No more action in this area after the recent DD incursion. CL TFs will move back to Sarmi, so Hollandia will be open to bombardment but is protected by MTBs, subs, midgets and mines. It's also not overstocked, so wouldn't be a total disaster if it got hit.

OZ: On the OZ side the BB TF hits Darwin after the CAs soften them up, and it's a mess for the Allied units there. Another 45 squads/devices destroyed and 144 disabled. Some of the guns were hit this time, and if these units stay eventually the AA will be trashed too, and then the Helens will take over. They are hitting the lone division already moving toward Katherine. I see movement indicated from some other units at Darwin now, too. This could mean a retreat. He'll have to cross the river to Katherine, but should beat the two naval guards there. Still, if there are a lot of disabled squads in the unit, you never know what casualties will look like.

So the Nick NF is now set up and factories are repairing. In this game the night bombing threat isn't imminent as only a few industrial targets are now in range (China has a no strat bombing HR).

I set this up for 37 planes a month. There are around 750 Ha-31 engines in the pool so enough for almost 10 months of production.

Interested to try out this plane. I should have around 4 groups using it.

SUBS: We've entered the period of game when it's tough for the Allied subs. As Joseph has pointed out in the main forum on this topic the Japanese Es are loaded with ASW, and in game are a bit more effective than they were in reality. I'd love to tone them down to keep the balance, so we'll work on that.

In the meantime, one of the non-super Es, the Chiburi, takes out the Dutch sub KX near Bathurst Island. This is shallow ocean, so it doesn't take much to get a good DCing of a located sub.

Out in the open ocean North of Babeldaob the Drum strikes TK Seiko Maru travelling with a lone E of the class E super-Es. Amazingly, the tanker survives and is now heading to Manila. The Drum is hit hard and left with heavy damage. I think I heard the sub sinking sounds, but couldn't be sure as I was in a noisy place.

CENT PAC: Air lifting most troops out of the Marshalls and Gilberts, as well as Ocean and Nauru Islands. Not important to hold these now and the Allies have proven they'll come with enough to take an atoll from a lone naval guard. May as well bring these to Ponape and Truk and distribute to more important rear areas if needed. Wolei and Yap will definitely some more.

OZ: The steady airstrikes o Groot Eylandt were bothered today by a LR CAP of Georges from Katherine and Rex's from the other nearby dot. the P-38 sweep did well and cleared the air for the bombers. The Allies came out on top in this one. I set them at 20k, just over the 16k sweeping altitude, but I think a high level LR CAP is best. Not sure why, but maybe it's that they planes arrive more as a group when they dive from 31k? Anyway. I'll back off for now and look for other surprise opportunities.

Looks like one of the big NZ flak units is here! Bad losses. Ten total bombers out of around 75 on the day shot down. Not worth bombing that group of units now.

SUBS: For all the talk of ineffective subs, Sqz is finding some spots to operate. A TF carrying troops was hit North of Babeldaob. I've begun diverting back to coastal routes. I'd gotten lazy since he hadn't deployed subs in this kind of role for a long while.

SO PAC: Decided to test the defences at Merauke with a sweep. Interesting result. I used the only Frank group in range at 31k and the defending Corsairs ate them for breakfast. Bad day. Lost 8 planes, 3 KIA, 3 WIA and 2 MIA. Teach me to go on the offensive.

The interesting result, however, is that Sqz has now moved fighters out of Merauke and Horn Island. This seems an odd response to defending the airspace there. I'll keep looking fro offensive opportunities in the area, especially where naval assets are placed forward without CAP, as seems to be the case at Merauke right now.

OZ: One Aussie division and the NZ AA unit plus some support troops have moved to Fenton. This base could be built to a level 9 field. If he has the supply to do that. I'll aim to continue bombarding Darwin to lower the supply in the area. Units are prepping, now at 35-40 prep for Darwin. I have a small probing unit moving in as I can't see through recon what is actually going on, and I want to see how an unprepared landing goes here. Using LSTs to get them on the beach quick.

9-12 April, 1944

SUBS: Subs have seemingly buggered off from the area around Darwin for now. We still haven't updated the database. Joseph hasn't been even discussing it after starting the thread on it, and I've begun to wonder if we don't have most of what it would offer anyway. I don't want to upset the balance in another area this late in game either.

SW PAC: Nothing happening on the North side of New Guinea for now.

BURMA: All quiet on the Western front.

OZ: Our Helens took the opportunity to bomb the Aussie 2nd while it was sitting alone in Darwin for a few turns. Then a strong AA unit moved in just as we lowered altitude to 6k to try for even more effect. Bad day for Helen drivers. Lost about 15 birds and I'll be letting the IJN continue the battle there for now.

OZ: Things have been slowing down across the board. Sqz seems to be pulling back (or losing interest) and there haven't been sweeps or strikes against any target in any theatre lately except those against Groote Eylandt units to support the ongoing battle there. The Allies attack on the 15th gets a 1:2 with some serious disablements.

Allied units have moved into Katherine and will most likely chuck the IJ units out soon, creating a land based supply bridge to Darwin. If supply can move over land here.

I just got done reading this and it is very interesting. I can see how I would have done things differently as Allies but I am still relatively new to the game.

One question/suggestion that I have at this point in the game, unless you were to attack the Soviets, how about a HR that would not allow other allied forces to use Soviet controlled bases other than emergency landings of aircraft from sunk/crippled aircraft carriers? The Allies would still be allowed to send supplies/fuel to the Soviets as a form of Lend Lease.

Glad you're enjoying. More updates soon. Been short of time but the game is moving ahead steadily.

The HRs for the game are still in effect, and those are listed on page 1. We've modified the air rule a bit, and the Chinese reservation never was used by Torsten, so became useless once he moved all Chinese to india and I took the Central plains.

This is the HR concerning Allied use of Russian bases. Russia gets supply and equipment in the OOB already, so doesn't need more shipped in.

No (other nation) Allied air or naval units in Russia are allowed, even if Russia is activated.

April 19-24, 1944

SUBS: Allied subs continue to be unseen and ineffective. No incursions into Japanese airspace lately, and since we've diverted cargo and oil runs to the West of the PI, no more mid-ocean connections. I know it's difficult for the Allies to take unhistorical losses to the sub fleet, but even harassing attacks that are targeted and sporadic can cause Japan to have to fully defend large areas of ocean.

Currently I'm standing down all inner sea ASW patrols, sending boats back to port. I've stood down ASW air and set them to train new low naval (kami) pilots, and only kept air units patrolling near the Arafura Sea and North New Guinea, as well as some search in the Kuriles.

BURMA: No movement so far of major troops. Not sure what the Allied plan is here, but I'll for now just assume it's the monsoons.

CENT PAC: No further invasions here. I've stripped all but a few [R] troops from the Gilberts and Marshalls. Quasi, Ponape and Eniwetok will continue to offer some defence for the time being, until it looks like the Allies are indeed moving to DEI or PI instead of the Marianas.

CHINA: IJA troops are in the final stages of maxing out every x25+ base and building all strategic locations to level 6 forts. A few key spots will go to level 7. Also, some trusted IJA units are digging in on strategic routes into the centre, which include one of the mountain passes E of Kunming, some on the Indochinese border. These are split into regiments so they dig past level 2 and are now at level 4-5. Most are on river crossing hexes. I think it might be a surprise for the Allies to later find a dug in division with level 6 forts in x3 terrain on a river crossing hex.

OZ: The Aussies take Katherine back with amor and a division. The IJN guard and base forces here will aim for the coast, but will probably be decimated.

The Allies also send in DBs to strike at two AMc hanging off of Darwin to protect bombardment runs. A bold strike with no escort!

I'll have to throw some LR CAP in and stay on my toes around here. The Allies also take back Groote Eylandt.

SW PAC: No movement or challenge along the North New Guinea coast. I've sent three cargo TFs in to resupply Hollandia and Sarmi. Two CL led TFs are here.

I sent bombers into Merauke to hit what was reported as two ships in port. Hit one ACM and damaged the port. Just a nuisance strike, but no losses, so that's nice.

SW PAC: Nothing doing. Supply reaches Hollandia with no incident bringing it to 23k+ and nearby bases to 2x requirements.

OZ: A decent set of bombardments softens up Darwin some more.

I've decided to definitely go ahead with the re-invasion of Darwin, for a few reasons.

1. I'd like to test the process of invading against a defended base later in game without full prep. Units have between 40-70 prep for Darwin. They are loading onto LSD, AMC, AK and will be escorted by the KB. I'm not using any xAP due to the slow unload speeds, so this will the best other IJN quick drop capacity at this point in game. This hasn't previously been in my interest, as I usually think it's not to Japan's advantage to counter already taken bases, but to use resources to strengthen defences and spring out from the shadows on our terms, but in this case it seems positive.

2. Taking back Darwin could limit the supply movement through the entire Aussie desert, and perhaps get a chunk of what's already there if he tries to defend. We're only bringing a small army, but through bombardments should be able to take the base against the one division there before reinforcements could arrive.

3. Having Darwin gives a good search and recon base fro North OZ, a possible intermittent striking base against supply runs too Groote Eylandt and other bases off the Aussie coast, and another spot the Allies would potentially have to commit naval/CV forces to capture again, even if using troops massed at Daly Waters and Katherine. If supply doesn't move in he could even have to prep for it, which would further delay the process. If he chooses to go around this would mean heading into the DEI with no LBA support toward several large IJ bases and potentially the KB with a Japanese base on the flank. I like that, and it may be worth the troops I leave here for he extra time and resources used to bottle it up or take it back.

Here is the situation around NW OZ. There is quite a lot of shipping around recently captured Groote Eylandt, possibly taking off combat troops and adding engineers/base forces. There may not be so much after the next turn!

SUBS: IJN subs guard the approaches to Darwin and several move forward to scout the coast. Other forces follow.

OZ: A fast element of the KB makes a flank run to just off the NW coast near Gove. This is 5 hexes from Groote Eylandt and the morning searches are promising. A number of TFs are at the base or en route.

In the morning Oscars sweep to clear LR CAP over the dot. They lose against the Corsairs there, but do wear them down and even shoot a few down for about a 1:2 ratio. The Oscars range comes in handy here for this 13 hex sweep.

The KB strike arrives in the morning and wipes out most of an amphib TF carrying troops. Always nice to hit them with the devices still on board. Some good losses here, and also a small flight of Jills finds two unescorted LST carrying troops and sinks both. Lots of vehicles go down here, probably tractors.

In spite of relatively short range to targets and a plethora of options available for the afternoon, no more strikes fly. That's a bit disappointing. This is worth it though and I didn't push luck by moving in further.

The next day some KB planes hit Groote port to sink one damaged DE, and the invasion neared the beach. They go in on the 30th, and relatively few disablements here. Pretty happy with this result, about 15-20% of the troops disabled and disruption only between 10s and 30s. Not bad!

The Allies look to be pulling out of Darwin. I won't attack, but will just let units rest and see what happens, hoping the base auto flips which would leave more potential supply/forts intact.

Invasion Results

Here are a few of the units that just landed at Darwin. Not doing badly really for being under-prepped and counter invading late against the Allies. I like this result. I'll decide soon how long the division will stay. I've got a lot of new LCU arriving in the next few weeks. I'll probably remove this one back to Java, placing a brigade here with a naval guard.

The defence now will focus on strengthening the semi-circle around North New Guinea to Babeldaob to the Marianas. I'll add a few units to the North, some to the DEI on Timor and at Macassar and Kendari. I'll also begin setting up lines behind, with the Moluccas getting some troops and some for the islands approaching the PI.

SUBS: Dont' like all of the recon on Babeldaob and Guam now that B-29s are officially in game somewhere. i'm moving subs back to rear ports, getting many tenders back as well, and making sure some CAP is up everywhere.

CENT PAC: The Marines take Abemama from the random cooks and powder monkeys the 63rd Naval Guard left behind when it flew out. The rest of the Gilberts and Marshalls will be easy for him. I've got almost everything out back to Ponape. Tarawa and Ocean are empty.

A big brigade is moving to Yap. I need good defence there as the airfield is decent and it's not an atoll. Forts are approaching 5 and this will bring AV to 350 or so.

OZ: The Allies decided to send four groups of Corsairs to sweep dot base Gove. Not sure what's happening there, but maybe I'll find out tomorrow. The KB has moved back to the shadows to replenish and continue to upgrade planes to the A6M8, D4Y4 and Grace. Sam is still not even researching. I think this is payback for the 8 hex strikes!

Considering the state of the game right now, I think mid-44 upgrades will not be happening for major combat ships and CVs. I have two CA and two BB out for 40-70 days right now and that feels a bit tight.

THE GAME: Not a lot to write about lately. The Allies are content to consolidate and plan the next invasions, problaly waiting until CV strength is at maximum to avoid the kinds of losses incurred in the Darwin invasion. I'll post a lot of dates here and talk more about the behind the scenes stuff in the next few.

There are a LOT of IJA troops on the way, which is great. I have t watch out as some must go to the CBI as the Thais are withdrawing soon. Cowards.

SW PAC: Lots of period sweeps and a few bombing missions at Dagga and Wewak. I'll sit back at Hollandia and Sarmi and wait. Still getting supply and some fuel in to those bases which is positive. Sarmi is 30k+ while Hollandia is around 25k. He'll close the airfields sometime soon I'm sure. The new P-47s and Corsairs around here look dangerous and plentiful.

On the 6th he tried a night strike on Hollandia with around 50 B-24 which did nothing. They won't do much from 20k.

OZ: On the 8th my Frank sweeps over Goote Eylandt are met by a small Aussie group of Spit Vc. We do fairly well here, getting about 1.5:1 on the day. The Spit VIII hasn't been around much yet. That is the beast.

I plan to keep a nominal strike package in the area but the Allies are building up bases in the Gulf at Groote and Mornington, and will likely move again soon. Filling in back areas with more troops just arriving now and in coming weeks.

These strikes only just hit supply in these forward bases, and that is not going to get any better. Essentially the units there will only get any more use before an invasion comes in by air drop.

BURMA: Some relatively big action on the 12th. Recon noticed supply TFs heading into Ramree island. I sent in Frank sweeps and a sent of Judys to clear them out. It worked but at a cost. Lost about 35 Franks and a bunch of Judys and Oscars on the days for a few LSTs, a minesweeper, and some P-40 variants. Good pilots gone.

So he's finally protecting supply insertion into Burma. This should mean that soon the war will be back on here, although I've not seen any movement or even sweeps testing defences for months. I'm curious if some troops will head down the Arakan to Prome. Recon sees nothing as yet to be scared of there.

I'm just getting to send some new brigades to Malaya and Sumatra. Much needed, and will help me to feel like I actually can slow down a move deeper past the Burmese coast.

CENT PAC: Sent in some xAKL to clean out minor supply dumps. Some detection but no action against them yet.

SW PAC: Frank sweeps at Groote Eylandt get crushed by Spit VIII.

An apology for my lack of updates and general absence for the past week or two.

Yesterday my wife gave birth to a daughter at 3:50pm! Everyone is healthy and Violet is happily feeding as I type.

Just wanted to let you all know and get the AAR off of page 2!

Back soon to do some posts I hope.

Congrats on the birth of your daughter.

I must also extend a well done on this game. You have done much better that I would have
expected given your day 2 disaster.
