That is a pretty darn good bombardment by only two cruisers.

Kind of hard to believe the base wasn't savaged the next day. Weather, possibly?

Low sweeps always seem to be painful. The only reason I really can see doing it is to try and stack the odds in your favor that the low sweeps come in prior to the bombers.

I always thought altitude was a big factor in the timing of raids over a particular base. More than distance at any rate.

I'm starting to think altitude is also a factor in timing. The low CAP is a bit scary to Sqz after his previous experiences, so at least he's trying some new stuff here. He had some things working earlier I thought, but din't pursue. He seems very loss averse, which in the endgame does allow for the multiple turn strikes that will be needed to wear down a base like this. I think he just set sweeps, and since I also had LR CAP going, even if he'd thrown 4Es in, they would've been hit for their gains.

I'm just sitting here still fighting in North New Guinea while all the bases in the second and third tier I want to fortify have time to build and get populated. This is a long process, and I know he took this over with a lot to fix. It'll be exciting to see jets for the first time!

I have seen Jets in downfall. They can be tough., but you need to be careful with them. High SR. They seem prone to not sticking around long, especially in a multiple wave attack.

I bet they make for decent sweepers when the Allies get close enough.

I am amazed at the low number of plane losses you have suffered.

RESUMING THE AAR: Well, it's been a while! The game as been going steadily, but the action hasn't been that new, so I didn't want to bore everyone with endless reports of the same air actions for several months. Some thing are starting to happen, so I'll quickly go through some updates and get to the present.

BURMA: The Allied army continues to march from side to side of the Central valley in Burma. I move troops back and forth. That's about it.

CENT PAC: Truk is still sitting pretty while everything West of there has been effectively abandoned. All Marianas bases are ready, with lots of prepped troops and good forts at 6-7.

SW PAC: In SW Pac the Allies continue to bomb Woleii and intermittently hit bases in Northern New Guinea. He is really feeling his way slowly here, which is fine by me, as Hollandia and Sarmi continue to be able to be supplied by xAKL. He sends DDs in occasionally to hit some, but others still get through.

One DD run is hit by MTBs, which is surprising and fun.

He continues to bomb Woleai, but we set LR CAP every once i na while and get some P-38s and B-24s too. All of this attention is having little affect on the base, which the engineers clean up. The main defenders are being kept at Babeldaop and will be flown in at first sight of trouble.

On the 24th he sends in a damn good BB bombardment of Hollandia. Ouch!!

We did manage to get ALL groups out via xAKL that were sitting in the base for this reason. Then the 200+ engineers fixed it up and we moved back in!

The BBs come back on the 29th and we have a DB strike get slaughtered by LR CAP.

On the 30th sweeps hit a lone Tojo group at Biak, and it does surprisingly well. Still finding this plane useful after its sell-by-date.

One other note is that he's using B-29s to hit fields and ports, which I like. The more used against these targets, the less around to hit industry later!

In a strike on the 31st they actually hit some CAP, with the newly arrived Ki-84b playing a part. Curious about this plane as I've not used them in previous games. So far so good!

A nearly abandoned Vanimo is taken on the 31st. I was thinking he'd walk from there to Hollandia, but so far he hasn't during the next two months.

SUBS: Allied subs still only work Cent Pac and a bit up toward Babeldaob. Ours are in port waiting for an Allied push forward. Then they will swarm.

BURMA: More of the same.

CENT PAC: All but Kwajalein taken in the Marshalls.

SW PAC: Sarmi gets the business on the 5th. A good, deep move by the Allies that I didn't notice in time. Still, it's not followed up by anything and the base returns to action after a week.

A USN force of Fletchers and CL Cleveland crushes an IJN CL led TF near Biak. Yikes!! Bad things to come!

On the 17th we LR CAP the milk runs at Woleai and get a few Lightnings and unfortunately no B-24s come that day.

OZ: The Allies take back Perth and Darwin. I've still got Exmouth and will try to keep it as eyes on the Allied movements. Darwin poses a threat, but is vulnerable to bombardment too. So far he's only basing fighters there.

On the 21st we miss a beautiful chance to hit the B-29s as they go for the fields at Noemefor. Unfortunately I had CAP down repairing and resting.

Pilot training and troop allocation keep me busy through the rest of Septembers scattered milk runs.

BURMA: October sees the Allies seemingly making a move here. On the yellow road from Meiktila the Allies now appear to have 200k troops going around my one supported and well-dug-in division in the river crossing hex. It looks like they will either walk into the deep jungle and go around toward Chang Mai, or potentially go for China up the road to Kunming. i've begun re-shifting my Chinese expeditionary army to free some divisions from their garrison and fort building duties and will get 2k AV up to Kunming to address this threat.

I've just seen through recon at Ledo that the now filled out Chinese army is returning into the fray fro mIndia. 400k troops are just leaving Ledo into the jungles. Paoshan is nearly at forts 6 but having supply woes, so I'm flying some in to finish the job, then leaving a division with arty in the base on the river crossing.

The force in Central Burma is now only 180k troops and looks to be heading for Toungou again. If his 200k force does hit the jungles proper, offload, I'll see that as a chance to retreat half of the IJA Burma Army to more safe areas near Bangkok.

CENT PAC: Nothing here.

SW PAC: Aha! Ships are spotted moving NW from So Pac. Looks like CVs so I think something is up at last. With all of the attention paid to Woleai for the past three months, I'l begin adding the regiment sitting in Babeldaop and get the base ready. The KB will not travel to the area to react just yet. I'd like to keep it in the shadows for now. Subs are launching from all directions and there should be 30 or so in the area in 3-4 days.

A shot of Burma. When will the massive Allied air force strike here?

SW PAC: The Allies go big for Biak this turn as well as moving closer to the Woleai area.

At Biak the sweeps do well, and the N1K5's debut is not amazing. He tries lower sweeps which helps him out, but the B-24s come in at 24k and the CAP still gets to them, while the bombing is relatively ineffective from that altitude. The P-38s on LR CAP really suffer, losing 35+ on the day, and the P-47 continues to struggle down low.

At Woleai two xAKL unloading supplies (just in time) attack CV air strikes, which are mauled by the Franks and Oscars on CAP here.

... the N1K5's debut is not amazing.

Sorry, at this point, there really aren't any 'wunderkind' weapons that will debut unless you go for the Ki-201.

IJ just gets incremental improvement on what you have while the allies are making MUCH bigger improvements on what they get ...

Not close. I'm only at about 11(19) on the jet fighters. Less on the bombers. Decided to add them late when it seemed like the game might continue past historical. Only one factory x30 of each of those and I think one of the Ki-94.

SW PAC: Woleai is invaded!! No big surprise there, but it is surprising that he uses two big BB TFs hit the base first and then two more in the amphib TF plaster the troops. I thought for sure it was a goner.

But no ... the 16th regiment holds on in their bunkers, pillboxes and emplacements. They waited through the terror of the big gun shells landing, then launched a counter attack on the beachheads. The 12th NZ Brigade was overwhelmed, pushed back into the surf, unable to to find cover.

This is an atoll. Only 4 forts but still, can't mess with an atoll bringing only a small brigade unsupported by engineers, tanks or arty. The forts hold, the 16th is only 18/16 fatigue/disruption, and the base has 48 AV left for tomorrow. We'll keep sending in troops and go from there. I doubt there's much left for combat troops on the other side. If he's smart he'll pull these all off now.

Sqz is not happy, feels he got a bad roll.

SUBS: Subs will come in and try for stragglers.

BURMA: Seems he's serious about the jungle escapade. I'll need to start planning the timing for bringing troops back onto the Chang Mai-Bangkok rail line.

The Ki-83 is good, and it is an improvement, but at least for me, I don't find it to be a wunderkind.
I find the J7W to be a bit better, but still not a wunderkind solution.

Both aircraft are competitive which is huge, but not dominate. This is in contrast to when the N1K/J2M first arrive, they really are dominate. Its about the last time the IJ get to experience that wonderful feeling.

The Ki-83 can dominate on the sweep. At least as often as Jugs do in the reverse.

But with SR3, they cannot sweep nearly as often. I didn't say it wasn't good, it is. But it is not a dominant aircraft. It is on par with the allied, no more.

Ask yourself this: would you take P47N or Ki-83 if you have a choice? Most players will choose the P47N, although they will give the Ki-83 acknowledgement as a good plane.

In equal production numbers? Without Tracker in front of me, I'm pretty sure the Ki-83 has better stats for everything but durability and the SR.

In which case... I'd rather have the Ki-83 because as mentioned, SR doesn't dictate frequency of sweeps so much as enemy defenses do. At least in my experience.

Altitude is key. Can it dive on P-47s? If so and there's a reasonable expectation with its armament that it will down P-47s, then I want it.

The Ki-83 is IMHO the best fighter Japan gets in the war, and the sooner you get it the better. When compared to several Allied fighters of the same generation though, it's just a pickem. Depends on what you want to do and how you want to set things to do it.

P-47N though is a cut above, obviously.

Given those stats and my HRs which limits planes to their 2nd best altitude ban + 1K the Ki-83 would be limited to sweeping or CAP at no higher than 21K while the P47N would be 32K+. Also the P-47N was the fastest of the bunch at 460 MPH and had a roll rate on par with the best of them, though it turned like a truck. It was also the best fighter bomber of those listed and could take the must punishment. So on all counts the P-47N was the superior and most versatile aircraft.

These stats are not stock stats.

P-47N in stock is limited to 42K (pretty sure). Ki-83 is not limited to 36600 in stock.

I've been talking about stock stats this whole time, so if yours are different, then just cross out everything I said .

Just grabbed them from the first game I was in. I'll look in stock too.

It's interesting all of the changes Symon made to airframes for DBB that ALL seem to enhance Japanese airframes. Some of them might have needed a push, like the Ki-100, but I can't imagine why he'd lower the P-47N altitude? (Stock is 42k I think).

Even with the stock stats though, the P-47N is top dog by a fair margin. Altitude can be beaten, but most Allied players don't use the best airframes on CAP duty often anyway. Their resting for the next sweep.

In stock, the Ki-83 can out-altitude any Allied aircraft (except perhaps the P-38J with its 44,000) if I'm remembering correctly. Combined with its 438mph top speed and dive bonus... and really, its not-awful maneuver and extremely accurate CL cannons... It can be murderous.

I might not be remembering the stock altitude correctly, as Wikipedia says the service ceiling was 41,500.

It does have a high ceiling, though, and truthfully it's tough to fly CAP at 42k every day. Not many players would have their P-47N groups on CAP at 42k just waiting for max sweeps.

I think the Randy Ia does 44k. So that can top the P-47N.

Since very few planes were ever operated at their max altitude, most planes flew like sputtering trucks that far up, my HR limits operations at the 2nd best altitude ban +1K. That would leave the Ki-83 at 33K and since the P-47N has no 2nd best ban it can operate all the way up to 42K.

It look like this game may be on hold again. After some discussion Joe has decided continuing might be too much right now. He's dealing with a lot of RL stuff and this is a pretty demanding time as Allies.

So ... I'm still interested in continuing.

If there is anyone who wants to pickup to any time in the last 6 months (I have all of the turn files so can go back easily) and play an endgame, let me know.

Eric, you might check with Joe. He wrote in his AAR that you terminated the game. I'm not sure he meant that...or perhaps he misunderstood something. He's pretty addled, I think, by developments in the game.

Oh, man, I would love to pick up the game, but I can't keep up with what I have right now.

Can you send me the files if indeed it is a drop. I would love to look at it from the Allied POV.

We've been back and forth a few times by email already. It's been a good discussion with no animosity, just some revelations about his personal life and where he's at in relation to the game. I was originally frustrated and asked to call it off if he felt so wronged each time something good happened for the Japanese. We've had some discussions in the past about this and the slow pace of the game, which has been in virtual stasis for about a year game time.

I reacted but came back to ask that he continue if he felt he wanted to, asI'm still interested and I really value his efforts and his camaraderie. We've actually had a good few years of exchanges, but when the game turns he also turns, and it seems like it's been weighing on him.

He made the decision in the end to pull away form the game, at least for a while, and I understand with the RL things he's dealing with. He's a competitor, and it's tough if he isn't competing at the level he wants and expects to due to other things happening.

We'll probably have a phone conversation soon to just chat. I hope this doesn't mean he backs out of the forum community, as he's been such a part of it for so long. He said his heart is still in it but his mind is telling him it's not the right thing to continue just now.
