What do your runways look like?

Dollars to donuts he is headed for the clear terrain island, and probably some others around it.

I've got two level 9 bases at Sapporo and Ominato. I've got some level 4-5 around Hokkaido, and Hakodate is going toward 7. Etorofu and Urruppa are 3-4. Para and Onneketon are level 3.

I'll not be hitting the DS anytime soon from LBA unless there is a serious reduction in CAP. There are other ways to skin a cat.

He may be interested in the clear hex base, which is fine since it's so close to the many big bases that it would be harder to support. Whatever happens up here, there is no way with the discrepancy in CVs between the sides to stop landings. I simply have to take a tithe for every step, make it painful, and to start doing that I need to get ships in place, subs under the DS, and prepare some nice CAP traps and other distractions. I need to chip away first, then see if I get any toys based on reinforcements or kamis.

That's the goal for today.

Yep, you are never really going to stop an Allied invasion in mid 44. They can suffer massive losses and still at least claim a bridgehead. By this stage of the war any asset lost by the Allies (including CVs which are near impossible to sink now anyway) can be readily replaced whereas the IJN is a rapidly diminishing resource in terms of quality and quantity.

Completely agree with your strategy- really it is the only viable course of action.

The cruel slog that we know all too well (especially Lowpe and I) is about to begin but it is still fun in a twisted way.

- FYI-having a lot of success in my recent game with the recon version of the Judy as a kamikaze. The hit rate is so high I actually think there could be a bug involved but still great to see Allied ships burn

Interesting. The Judy-C?

I never even considered using recons as kami, and didn't know it was even possible. Have you also tried the Dinah-III? Or the NF Dinah-Kai? They're so fast that I could imagine they'd be good too, if a plane that doesn't carry a bomb can be effective!

Having been through this with Jocke I know all too well the tremendous effort it takes to keep going through the turns when the Allies are breaking down the doors in every corner. Its a grind but there are good days!

I'm glad I didn't shock. The 14th tank didn't stop the Allied units from the NW moving in, and the Allies end up with 4.6k AV in hex.

The troops one hex away railing in stopped and began to unpack. Odd, since the unit railing in from Rangoon made it just fine. Hmmm.

Either way, I'll see how the next few turns go. The Allied reinforcements are the below:

9th Australian Division
1st New Chinese Corps
5th Indian Division
72nd British Brigade

The Allies bombarded and lost a chunk of arty. So I've turned bombardments on and I'll wait for all units to get into the hex before deciding how to proceed.

In the North, the Allies close in and tighten up the fleets. It looks like the middle Kuriles will be the target, or they'll move past and head for Shikuka.

I set some long range and high 2E TB to just past Uruppa. This shouldn't be in range, but if anything small comes hunting, they could get em. Also, I have a few small CAP traps going, but they're probably just Fletcher bait.

Yes your game with Jocke was an epic one and highly enjoyable. Also provided a multitude of lessons learnt for us all especially around supply consumption.

I started off by using the Judy-C due to its great range. Only takes two hits from them to sink a Fletcher despite not having any payload. It will be interesting to hear others experience.

good luck, good hunting

I’ve almost forgot what a land based Death Star looked like. That is a huge stack at Prome.

Do you have any notion how much of that 4.6K AV is fresh?

The units I listed above. Here they are again.

The Allied reinforcements that were not in the last combat are the below:

9th Australian Division
1st New Chinese Corps
5th Indian Division
72nd British Brigade

So about 1800-1900 of the AV total.

Good call at Prome.

My thoughts now would be to think about pulling back into the jungle, once Prome cannot be defended by air anymore. Otherwise it is a great attrition base. And of course I would always be worried about a landing...but with the Kuriles in play that is certainly not likely.

I had to go back a page to find a map of Burma, and you didn't press W (for shame), but it also seems like there is at least one Chinese unit heading deeper east into China. I would be cautious about Chinese infiltrating the mountains aiming SE to the coast and Vietnam.

Looks like the invasion has veered to the north and will target the Kuriles, the safer play, rather than Hokkaido. Probably a mistake on CR's part, as it guarantees a longer tougher fight -- it certainly will define the game.

Kuriles, then in sixty days another big invasion invasion...it seems to me you are in pretty decent position for having lost carriers on day 2. Most likely you will keep oil/fuel shipments to the HI for the the bulk of the game.

Nicely played.

Given the date, you are in great shape here.

I'll update more soon.

There is a move into China. It's mainly through the direct mountains, and not toward Into-China. There is one unit walking down the road toward Chang Mai, but I have 3-4 weeks to deal with that.

I've got tabs on all the units coming to China and I've moved an ID onto every river crossing hex I could get to in time that is also on a road. The road to Paoshan is a big IJA parking lot, with an ID/hex. The Chinese don't like forts, x3 defensive terrain or tanks. a few tank regiments are on the way.

It's funny that I want him to strike Prome from the air! I would never have thought that, but Allied losses to flak have been around 20% at Prome, and for little effect. Lots of radar and 12cm guns.

I do have to watch out, and the manoeuvre battle is just beginning. I'll hold until my Taung Gui units arrive back near Toungou, then make a call on how long to stay put. Prome has served it's purpose, as has Burma in general. It's tied up a massive Allied army away from oil or infrastructure until mid-44, so I can now make some other plans.

Yeah, June 44 and the allies are just starting something, but not going for the jugular (Hokkaido) ...
you should be able to tie up key allied assets in the Kuriles for the next 18 months ...
15 months prep time for the SOV ...

If my assets are tied up for 18 months that's 6 months longer than I've played the game yet!

So no landings yet on the 2nd. The Allies move slowly North. A small TF unloading supply is defended well at Etorofu, downing about 25+ Hellcats and some Avengers.

In Burma some small air skirmishes. The defenders go high today, diving on Corsairs to gain a small advantage on the day, which is nice, and should at least make him reconsider settings.

Bombardments at Prome are about equal, which means no way I'm doing anything there for a while.

June 3, 1944

The Allied fleet inches North. It's increasingly looking like he's either just baiting me or heading for Shikuka. I have always thought the latter would be a prime target. It's unfortunately almost but not quite level 7 forts, but only just about 2 divisions. I think the Allies will bring everything, so nothing anywhere right now will be enough. If he does land there it is interesting though, since that leaves some opportunity on his LOC flank through the Kuriles. I'll begin sending more our there as I can, and I've already tried to beef up Toyohara, but it may be too late to get it together since forts are only just below level 5.

Peggys announce their presence by hitting a gaggle of leading YMS.

In Burma the Allies have a very bad bombardment. Lots of guns wiped out, which is nice. for the Commonwealth troops sometimes this becomes final since reinforcements are not plentiful.

The 36K Peggy strike....that will really cause a little rejiggering of the altitudes of the deathstar CAP I bet.

Angels 36, and they made a torpedo attack? AND 22 of them hit something as small as a yard ship...6 times?!? A 30% hit rate was simply unheard of, even by KB's best, against capital ships. Against yard boats

Shikuka, eh?

If he parks the deathstar one hex SW, then you can't selectively aerially strike the invasion beach. Even Jakes flying 0 hex from Shikuka will search out a couple of hexes (and be shot down). You could try flying Glens from Iboats to target the edge of Shikuka....and work a strike that way if you are so inclined.

But it might present an opportunity to race in a few destroyers at night thru the hex to the SE of Shikuka.

Even only 2 destoyers might cause a lot of reaction movements slowing down the invasion or causing collisions.

Wargamr just did this Sakhalin invasion against Mr. Kane, you might want to check his AAR.

Size 7 forts are pretty tough, if you have lots of units there to absorb the initial bombardments you might do ok. Here is a thought, break one division down into 1/3rds, the full division will bear the brunt of the naval bombardment, and the fractional division will be relatively unhurt. Another option would be to park some worthless planes there so the bombardments focus on the runways rather than the troops.

Of course you need lots of units there, especially artillery to stand any chance, and even armor. I doubt you have a lot there. Stopping what is most likely a 5 division invasion is super tough. I wouldn't feel bad about railing in troops from Toyohara...given the size 7 forts, no initial shock attack, etc.

You might get a shot at some ammo depleted surface groups after he bombards.

Your air lift should be around 500 AV or better by now per day.

Course local supply stockpiles will most likely determine your defense.

That assumes that the USN CVs don't launch any strikes. If they launch strikes, they will be automatically detected and subject to strikes (in the PM phase) from obvert's LBA, regardless of obvert's search patterns.

Also, CVE CAP (if there is any here) would interdict air transport. LRCAP from the CVs is a little less reliable to intercept.

Both Shikuka and Toyohara are level 1 fields, so only FP could go there. I've not planned to defend in any way other than the 8cm DP guns, MTBs, midget subs and the forts, which by the way are almost level 7, but not quite. I think I'd need another to weeks to get them there, so probably won't get it.

Either way, if he wants it he'll take it without SL in mid-44. I'm happier for him to take 1-2 bases though that still need to be supported and then try as much as possible to strengthen the Kuriles against further invasions. Unless he has some of those still in mind and prepped as well, but it seems not for right this moment.

June 4, 1944

The Allied fleet slowly move in on Shikuka. It's amazing to watch, even more so on this day. The USN DDs moved in first and took out the majority of the MTBs. One survived, burning, and fled into the ocean.

As MTB-846 fought it's fire it had a front row seat to watch what looks like the entire Allied armada slide past. Pics posted in succession below. Always good to have a view before complete annihilation.

The Allies flew and sank a retreating cargo TF. I'm kicking myself I didn't have better LR CAP here. Won't make that mistake again. Bleeding CAP just didn't arrive, and this was a golden opportunity to reduce the DS a bit. Mad at myself.

At Prome the Allied bombardment destroyed two of their units! Siege guns doing their job!

Sure enough, Shikuka is invaded!

Interesting it's only Shikuka and not also Toyohara. Does he have it prepped? I can't imagine he wouldn't. I'm flying in troops fast, but increasing AV about 100/day there.

I think in the below landing report I count 6 x ID!! That will be a one and done shock and Shikuka will go to the Allies.

The coastal guns create a bit of disruption and hurt some LSTs, but other than that this is pretty smooth as landings go. All decent CD guns are on Hokkaido and in the Marianas. Those are moving up soon to Hokkaido and Honshu bases.

One mini-sub takes out an LST. That's it.

The Allies shock and take Shikuka. They are also smart and land at Toyohara, meaning the Shikuka troops do not retreat. No flying them out now.

Also, it looks like the rest of the kitchen sink at Toyohara. I will not have enough there in time to save that base either. The good part is that I'm attritting the DS CAP slightly (while also getting some 2E TB shredded for no hits) and I will try some sweeps. He landed a few units outside of the base as well, so I have a target. I'm hoping to catch bleeding CAP and then possibly, a KB strike!!

Night Frances attack but no hits on the DS. Nice to see them find the big boys though.

I also had Peggys and Judys going at Toyohara in the day, and they were slaughtered. Not unexpected though. I did get to see that the high setting didn't make much difference on its own, but might later with the addition of other low and mid level settings. Some did miraculously get through, but Allied flak is horrific at this point too.

The KB is ready, and will move to a distant possible attack position, well protected by extra LBA on LR CAP over the surface combat TFs. I won't throw all LBA at them too, since the strike position is not advantageous in case he holds back and they end up attacking alone. I don't think they'll move forward, but the sweeps and large KB strike on forward shipping could do well to weaken the DS.

I forgot to copy the air loss totals. We lost about 260+ planes, mostly Judys, Oscars and Peggys. All planes I have massive pools for which is nice. Not bad actually for hitting the DS unexpectedly.

The 7th starts with the Frances again finding the DS. They're like the guard dogs, barking at the fences that alert everyone to the position of the intruder. On this night they may have helped guide subs to their target. Initially this resulted in two subs being crushed by ASW and one getting hit by a USN boat with 3 fish. Ouch.

After this the old BBs bombard Toyohara, an IJN sub hits a mine and then gets crushed by ASW, and the IJN dishes a bit of payback by hitting SS Guitarro with one.

After a night of tracking, daybreak reveals the entire USN DS in the periscope sight of I-183!!

The skipper does the quick calculations, waits just that extra moment to be sure, then lets fly with a spread of 6 Type 95 torpedoes. The wait is agonising, but at last a flash of water shoots above the flight deck and the sound man yells a "Banzai!"

Only one hit, but as the commander continued to monitor for a few lasts moments before crash diving, maybe a moment too long, there was a secondary explosion that rocked the carrier and sent debris flying out across the water.

Exhilerated and shaking, he ordered a dive and immediate change of course. Sadly, it was too late for this crew ...

An ammo storage explosion should make this hit debilitating enough to require a trip back to the yards. That means essentially 4-6 months without CV Franklin, which is fantastic.

While sinking an Allied CV would be great, at this point in time just damaging one enough to require it to be withdrawn from the DS is enough, IMO.

BANZAI!!

If you have the time, can you lay out your plans for defending the Kuriles??

Can you do anything about his staging bases in western Aleutians?
