Looks like enough troops in one lift to rival the D-Day landings.

Including construction regiments and base forces!

Always good to bring your earthmovers and quonset huts over the landing beaches day 1!

This is where I really like SL much more than non-SL games. This is a 70k hex in SL, and currently it has about 150k Allied troops, plus a lot of armor.

hardly grasp the logic in stack limiting an area 40x40m wide , what, to 5 million people, more? Even if we say this hex is half or two third sea water, it is still a big area;

Think a little. Do you see the original comment here?

...and go back to the (now old) discussions on stacking limits you will see they have to do with terrain, roads, and so on.

ok but still 40 miles wide... 150 k is nothing, unless in the Himalayas, Rockies, etc.

The guys who designed DBB are a bit more knowledgeable than I am. I think they're goal is to make the game fit more realistic parameters. I would imagine 150k troops could possibly land in this area, but they couldn't easily join and fight as a unified force for many days (over as you say, a 46 mile hex, in this case with jagged hills, tidal river estuaries and steep coastal cliffs.

I'm playing this game through because I want to see where it gets after a day 2 debacle with the KB, but I wouldn't chose to start a new game without stacking limits because I've seen the mess it makes of the land combat model with stacks of 500k + troops in Burma and things like this sort of landing that make the game so much less about a player strategically and tactically outthinking another player.

Nothing taken away from Dan mind you, he is VERY good at maximising his force allocation. The best I've played so far. He doesn't let the pressure up for a second and that is a fun challenge.

Feb 10, 1945

More of the same on the 10th. Allied bombing of Bihoro and Kushiro and continued landings at non-base hexes. I set a massive air strike against the Allied fleet if it stayed in range for a third day. It didn't. I managed a few sporadic strikes on one TF landing more troops in the clear to the West of Kushiro, and didn't get a shot a any CVs. The KB sortied and moved to near Sendai, and I'll continue up to move through to the North of Honshu now.

The tanks in the clear are crushed by air strikes between Bohoro and Kushiro, but I knew that would happen. I had hoped to use the turn to hit something while Allied forces were interested there. No go.

The Allies try a limited armor only DA at Kushiro which does more harm to them than us this time, luckily.

This is the scene. The Allied fleets have moved away, but the Armies continue to land on Hokkaido. I don't realistically thin the Japanese can get into a good enough position to stop the Allied massed force at Kushiro, but I have to give it a go.

I was trying to read just one side of this conflict and then go back and read the other after it was over. Couldn't help myself.

So... great AAR and thanks for writing it!

Could anyone please list the penalties for "overstacking"?

1 - significantly greater supply usage-waste (how much greater, moreabout?)

2- Hans Bolter once hinted in greater losses to bombardments (would make sense). Indeed?

3- Any penalties in combat?

I have been playing exclusively with stacking limits for over two years now and will never play without them. The limits don't appear to be arbitrary, but rather to have been thoroughly thought out.

No stacking limits not only facilitates, but encourages unrealistic mega stacks.

Effects I have noted in addition to enhanced supply usage:

1. Increased losses to enemy bomardments. I have seen this get so crazy that I was foirced to reduce the overstack to relieve its effect. I'm not just hinting at this, I'm stating it uncategorically.

2. Suppressed ability to recover from high fatigue.

3. Suppressed ability to recover from low morale.

4. Suppressed ability to recover from high disruption.

5. Increased losses from a failed shock attack. This can be disastrous.

Effects 2-4 can cause you to have to pull units out of the hex to recover. I have seen this quite a bit.
We all know how the ground copmbat routine selects one or two units to be the lead attackers and take the brunt of the damage.
Sometimes I have had to pull these units out and replace them with a fresh unit, sending them somehwere more conducive to recovery.
The dynamic of how you prosecute the attack changes considerable with stacking limits.

BTW, did the recent landings trigger Home Island reinforcements? If so what did you get?

Plus aerial bombing runs.

All of it effects affect combat, but like most aspects of the game it seems tied to probability and degree. Some overstack is generally okay, especially on the defense. I have gone to defenders at 130% on Atolls with good results. In China, as attackers I start to see serious combat degradation around 150%.

I have messed around with using the overstack in reserve mode but I don't haven enough n to draw any conclusions here.

I mean, for reference... the D-Day landings were ~150K Allied troops and ~50K Germans.

With an additional 1.3M troops landed over the course of the next 7 weeks, and a further 700K in the 5 weeks after that.

An aside, but to me the truly stupendous thing about D-Day is not that it was done... but that at the same time (9 days later), an invasion nearly as large (in terms of initial landings) was begun at Saipan, with many more ships to boot.

The Wakkanai landings triggered reinforcements. It's a pretty sad package. About 8-9 "depot divisions" which are understrength and poor experience IDs. Still, I'll take it, as they've been a good stop-gap to add numbers to the "visible" defenses. Recon and Allied looks into possible landing sites play such an important part, even less capable units can provide a discouraging view if well allocated, I think.

The good thing going soon is that something like 10-12 better "full" IDs will arrive on Honshu and flesh out the already decent defenses there. It'll be less possible to isolate a base on Honshu and the rail network will allow a lot of units to move quickly into support.

If Kushiro falls, which is pretty likely, it will mean kamis come into play (at last). Rules kind of odd in this case. I don't have hem but if there was a size 1 airfield in the middle Philippines owned by the Allies that would give me kamis, not 120k Allied troops taking Wakkanai!

Allied bombing runs on the tanks are interrupted nicely. A lot of 2Es lost there on the day, plus some escorts. The 4Es focus on Bihoro and Kushiro, and although flak does well, the bases are essentially shut and infantry stlll being disrupted.

The Allied heavy BBs are only sporadically involved, making m wonder. Did they take extra damage during landings and initial bombardments? Are they being saved for something else? Is there a quick follow-on planned?

The Japanese fighters are strong, and will be heavily LR CAPing the troops which are now moving into the contested hex. Hopefully I can get a hold of some B-29s in this campaign. The loss of Kushiro has some downsides, but I' most worried about a strategic bombing campaign, so if I can reduce Allied fighters and bomber strength, and especially get to the beasts while they're in non-strategic roles, that would be nearly worth the 150k Allied troops let loose on Hokkaido.

A few things went well on the 12th. The turn started with some Es cruising to Sapporo to try and get Yamato back to Honshu, but found some subs to target on the way. Hawkbill goes under for good.

In the air LR CAP over the troops, Kushiro and Bihoro nets a good haul of both fighters and bombers. The Allied strikes don't do much in the end up here, and the loss ratio is the best for a while as so many good fighters are caught escorting, but the defenses still get through to bombers even in the big well escorted strikes.

The Allies are also up to something new in the South. a select of sweeps and strikes from Burma hit Bangkok, and the training groups there whittle them down with a positive ratio. The bombers, in many cases older versions including the last B-17E/F, take some lumps and white they do get through, don't close the field. It has about 20 damage. The groups though have a lot of damaged fighters, and there is a reason for all of this sudden attention.

Allied CVE, SCTFs and amphibs are seen offshore, 5 hexes from both Mergui and Victoria Point. I've got a few other filelds that are more secure, including Champion, Pisanoluke, and Prachup Kirikirikan. So I'll post some nearby DB, TB and 2E bombers around to see if I can't deflect this threat tomorrow. I also have one surface force steaming to Medan for a flank run in if needed.

I'd imagined this would have happened earlier, but I think everything arriving has probably been heading North. It's February so I'm happy to evacuate Burma if needed, but I'd like to hit the ships if possible too. A few divisions are in reserve along the rail route and now moving, and two tank divisions are able to apply quick relief if needed. I'll try to delay the push into the SRA as long as I can to keep the oil flowing. So far it's been going well, and tankers are very busy.

On the day the Allied losses are extensive, with most fighters and 2E bombers taking the hits. I can't quite get to the B-29s as they're always flying with a lot of other bombers and defend so well.

Hey Overt,

First, very nice spirited defense into 1945. This part of the game offers so many challenges. I appreciate your AAR.

Are you still using low layered CAP to defend against the air strikes or do the late war Japanese fighters allow a high CAP as well?

Wa

Obvert, you should answers those CAP questions in code so the information doesn't fall into Allied hands!

More carnage on the 13th. The Allies get some back in easy kills as the DS moves back in to just below Kushiro inviting three small TB groups to strike, as well as some stray Jakes on naval strikes in the IO. The battles that mattered were still about even in A to A and another good chunk taken out of USN pilots and airframe pools as the DS groups sweep over the troops on Hokkaido.

The IJA stack moves into the hex NW of Kushiro occupied by Allied armor, and the IJAAF strikes Allied ground positions effectively. Nice to hit something back. Virtually no losses as there was a 600+ fighter LR CAP over this hex. The Allies also struck and swept, and those were intense battles with varying losses for both sides. Key sweeps (mostly USN) failed miserably for the Allies, and again the 2Es paid a price while the 4Es stayed in formation, cut down IJ fighters and suffered only sporadic losses. Flak did it's job and losses were not as catastrophic as usual in clear territory, especially considering the number of B-29s involved, but they did enough to limit the DA at the end of the day to a 1:1. I'll rest for a day and hope more strikes come in, as new troops are arriving tomorrow. If there is still hope, we'll try again.

This would also give a good retreat path to the units at Kushiro should they fall in the next few days.

The Allies either got cold feet or wanted to assess what kind of a response the IJ could bring together here. Either way he got some kills, but not a really good look at what will be there tomorrow. Looks like about a 70 plane CV CAP plus a lot of LBA there. Seems like the strikes I'm getting together could make it through that if all flies. We'll see.

Hey Overt,

First, very nice spirited defense into 1945. This part of the game offers so many challenges. I appreciate your AAR.

Are you still using low layered CAP to defend against the air strikes or do the late war Japanese fighters allow a high CAP as well?

Wa

Hi Andav. Sorry to take while on this. Been a crazy week.

The low CAP is still very useful in big well supported bases with lots of radar and quick climbing airframes. High CAP is great against the Corsairs and Hellcats, but it allows the P-47s (and to a lesser extent the P-51Ds) to play in their element. The designers got this part really right.

I've played for a while now with some of the new ones and the N1K5 is a fantastic all around late war airframe. As CAP it's tough and heavily gunned. It's surprisingly well suited to sweeping as well, even though Allied airframes can get above it, the extra guns hit hard.

The Frank Ki-84r is awesome in all roles, and flies 9k CAP and 36k+ max CAP well. Even though it is dived on in the high role the speed/manoeuvre combo seems to allow it to survive and hit back. Good as a sweeper and the best at 9k top layer of the low CAP.

The Ki-84b is decent, and I'll keep making ~100/month because of the added range and CL canons against Allied 4Es. If it can hang on through sweeps it tears into bombers pretty hard. Not as good up high.

The Ki-83 is the best sweeper in game recently, including Allied airframes, rivalling the new Corsairs, but it suffers in low CAP due to poor manoeuvre. In high CAP it's better, but not outstanding.

The J2M5 is a decent CAP plane but not so much high CAP or sweeps. Better in the 7k role as low layered CAP.

The Oscar Ki-43 IV is decent for low CAP and service 1 means I don't have to rail them out as often. I've used them up high in a high layered CAP and they still do okay, surprisingly. Mainly due to numbers I'm sure.

The Ki-100-I basically is neutered in stock with only 360mph and it's only viable as an escort, rear CAP and kami. It can't handle Allied sweeps in any layer band. Just getting the Ki-100-II now which seems a bit better, even though it's still only 367mph.

The Ki-44 IIc is still hanging around due to good manoeuvre/speed combo, excellent climb and service 1. It does okay at the 7k band in low CAP and as an escort, but that's about it.

I alternate low and high CAP a lot to keep the Allies on their toes, but he's also been altering sweep a lot. He's sending some in as low as 8k, which I've never seen before. In areas of no radar, like the troops being bombed to oblivion in the clear right now (all three radars bombed out of action), that works. Against a big base it likely won't.

I've tried a few mid-level layered CAP settings, and recently a full altitude mega-CAP, layered across all tiers of altitude bands, but due to lack of radars in the target hex it's hard to assess how those could work.

Obvert, you should answers those CAP questions in code so the information doesn't fall into Allied hands!

Nah, the info is useful to all, but it doesn't give anything away to Dan. He can read the reports to see what I'm doing in much more detail.

The important part is when to change things up. I try to stay less predictable, but I'm sure he's figuring me out a bit by now.

I thought maybe today I could finally catch the Allied 4Es and especially the B-29s. No luck. This is getting annoying. The Allied sweeps are always coming in many waves before any of the bombing runs, the 4Es are always nearly perfectly coordinated, weather never shuts down a morning or afternoon phase, and my LR CAP is always depleted by the time the bombers come. Where are those famous dice rolls when you need them?

My LR CAP in hex today was about 380 fighters set to high and low. The low got pummelled and the high didn't get down fast enough. Unfortunately the radar in hex has been vaporised. More should arrive tomorrow with a large base force. I'm hoping that will help the ~1,000 fighters and FB I've set to be on LR CAP over these troops now. If this set of planes can't do it, I don't know what to try. I've got them on all bands, layered from max 41k+ to 5k low, and a lot on each band range. I'm trying to do three layered areas, high, mid (20k, 18k, 16k), and low.

Unfortunately the radar in hex has been vaporised.

Try putting some Irving Sa on LRCAP there and try to hide them where they won't get involved in the fighting. Like at 1000 feet.

That is so sneaky smart!

I've not ever considered the impact of flying radar to day battles and defensive positions. I've got loads of Irving-Sa too so if it helps me hit B-29s I don't really care how many I lose.

I'll pop some in at 100ft with a large Oscar IV group maybe to help deflect divers. Too bad I didn't see this before finishing the current turn. Damn.

Massive air battles over Kushiro and the troops a hex away. The Allies burn a lot o planes this turn. Mostly 1E bombers. But a good amount of fighters also succumb. A great turning the air for Japan.

In spite of that I don't get to the 4Es and I can't clear the Allies from the path, so it looks like Kushiro will fall and these troops will have to turn back to Bihoro. I'll try to use their vulnerability to entice all of the Allied aggression out and maybe, one day, get to the bombers. Kushiro troops take another hit form the landing auto-bombardments. Dan and I had a talk about this as apparently he's been getting a lot of flak in the AAR about it.

I won't lie. It's frustrating. It's not that he's doing something wrong though, it's that the game has a limitation that restricts me from making a choice here. These are the parts of game I have trouble with the the only areas I would now consider making AARs about. With this issue I don't know how it could be regulated though. You can't say don't send more troops in. He does put ships and troops at risk by doing so as well, but the risk is minimal compared to the gain in this case. It's become a system for him recently, and he's using it well.
