What I was getting at here is trying to bring out more from the various posts that have been made over time.

You won't find any dev post over the years with more information or clarity on the subject than the ones I made in Mike Solli's AAR.

This game does allow the player to choose the bomb load of many planes and situations (choosing torpedoes vs bombs, choosing normal vs extended range, getting 80+ exp pilots in to drop bigger bombs, altitude choice, etc). It's therefore somewhat odd and arbitrary why the devs would have wanted to "hide" what kamis carried from the player.

No one with knowledge of the subject has ever said that

  • mission ordnance
  • range
  • size of ordnance

is taken into account in determining whether a hit results. Nor has anyone ever said anything about altitude operating differently for kamikazes than it does for other mission types. So how does any of this amount to devs hiding information.[/I]

What does it matter? Why not just say that there is a bigger boom from a bigger plane? that makes perfect sense, and wouldn't change much about how (smart) players set up their kami strikes. There is no exploit there, no game balance issue, nothing to "hide." So why the mystery?

Why do you think I nor any dev haven't said that.

I agree a hit is primary. No argument there. I've had success flying FP kamis and Judy kamis with 800kg bombs. Again, that is some of what I'm trying to squeeze out.

Maybe the greatest concern in an effective kami is a good pilot with expert defensive and low naval bombing skills.
Second might be plane speed and manoeuvre ratings.
Third might be airframe durability and armor.

I've already posted what are the factors to look for.

So does the bomb load matter? Sounds like not. So why then research the myriad of 800kg bomb carrying late war planes, most of which don't have a good speed/manoeuvre/durability combo? I've decided already there is no reason. I can convert almost any group to either F/FB/MB and therefore get a good combo of fast and either durable or manoeuvrable airframes to use.

What it would be good to know is how much bigger a boom an airframe type would produce so I could better choose which of the good airframes I know will more often get a hit to dedicate to my low volume kami strikes and which to keep in their day jobs. That's all really.

Tough, you've been playing this game long enough to know that the devs have never in any area of game activity provided such detail. The idea of reducing AE to just a spread sheet has never been the intention of the devs.

You get a respectible level of damamge from every kami hit, regarding if it's big or not.

It depends on the target. I've had CAs and BBs basically shrug them off.

On the 25th the Allies do stay on theme by landing a portion of a unit off-base between Mergui and Tavoy. I'll try to march to Mergui, but I again don't think the defenders will hold at Mergui long enough to get there. We'll see. I'll try to fly a few troops in too.

At least two good RN BBs are in the IO and King George V makes it’s presence felt at Mergui. Knowing these are down here makes me even more interested in getting some air strikes to fly and also makes me conservative about holding the coastal bases.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Night Naval bombardment of Mergui at 53,62

Allied Ships
BB King George V
CA Suffolk
DD Ulster
DD Grenville
DD Termagant
DD Tenacious
DD McCalla

Airbase hits 3
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 12
Port hits 6
Port fuel hits 5
Port supply hits 2

BB King George V firing at Mergui
CA Suffolk firing at 3rd South Seas Det.

The Allied strikes come in the day today, aiming for Sendai. This didn’t look good during the sweeps with only a few Ki-100 manning the fort.

Later, since the strikes arrived in the afternoon, other friends from nearby bases did arrive and were able to hit some bombers.

It wasn’t a big strike, but surprisingly good results after all is said and done, although there was some damage. The Ki-100-II factory is now at 0(20). This is the first significant air production damage of the war. I might just rebuild it, but I’ll wait to see how much the Allies can force their will over Northern Honshu.

Nope, that's a mistake IMO. 20,000 supply that could potentially be bombed again next month. Absolutely not worth it for as meagre an airframe as the Tony. If it was the jets or the late war stuff I'd say go for it, but IMO save the supply.

The final tally isn't so bad this turn. The Ki-100 is outdated, and I know it should be better supported with Franks here. The good part is downing 3 B-29s and 2 B-29 recons as well!

Damage is moderate to the industry. I can take these little hits as long as I begin to get into the bombers and take a tithe each time.

I hear that. It all depends on how well I'm defending. "Re-bombed" doesn't mean a free run at it. In a month I might be eve better prepared to get to the Allied bombers. Or the P-47N could be could be slicing and dicing. I wan to wait to see f rebuilding is worth it. The Ki-100-II isn't bad now, and if I do rebuild I could always switch to the Frank.

Just remember, it's Sendai. If it was one of the major industrial cities where you'd keep a ball-of-yarn CAP up, then maybe. Defintely not Sendai - if the only air factory there is a size 20 Tony factory and it's toast, I'd even consider pulling out some of the CAP squadrons for somewhere with more industry.

To be honest, there's a lot of industry in bases like this - the loss always hurts but it's impossible to defend everything in enough strength for it to matter.

The first attack at Mergui is not promising. It's not catastrophic yet either.

My transports didn't transport so I'm brining in Emilys. Need to replace losses and see if I can get a 1:2 result, which would buy a bit of time.

On the 27th Nicks kick some butt over Hachinohe. The combination of fighters, flak and forts mean that the Allies lose 9-14 USN 4Es for no strat hits and only 5 airframes destroyed on the ground. The NF had decent warning times here, which might be part of the success too.

I brought a lot of F/FB into Bangkok ,but they're all mediocre pilots. I hoped number would win out. They suffered against sweeps but did last and get to the bombers. Reducing the numbers here is crucial as he then has to decide whether to refill these with new models or reserve those for the North.

Over Honshu the Allies go for Hachinohe. Finally a strike goes in before ALL of the sweeps have cleared he air. The defenders did pretty well though once the sweeps came as well. Got to the big boys this turn, but they did get through to wipe some resource hits and the afore mentioned Tony factory. (Lost track of turns, it is actually here, not Sendai).

The Allies continue to take hits to the exposed troops near Kushiro. Some of the tank units might have gone to greener pastures this turn.

Over at Para the Allies try a bombardment that doesn't come off well.

Mergui continues to fall slowly. Now I'll focus on reinforcing Tavoy.

An even more destructive bombardment at Rangoon.

Some 40+ 4Es are downed on the day, including a handful of B-29s. Some good sweepers also lost, and all of it over IJ bases where the majority of downed pilots won't return.

Mar 1, 1945

It's March. 1945. The Japanese are still hauling almost as much fuel as can be produced from the SRA back to Japan. Subs and other recent surface incursions have taken a toll, but not stopped the flow. The HI is humming, largely untouched in the Home Islands. The only significant centres damaged are at Sendai and Sapporo. A lot of resources are offline, so I'm beginning to haul reserve stocks (left for this part of the war) from Formosa and the PI.

In the air the war has been intense since Dan took over, now exactly one year ago. It's been nearly even, with the Japanese loss disparity almost made up by the number of 4E shot down. I'll show figures in the next post.

Not much happened after the intense air battles of the last few turns, but there has been a shift in my thinking. It's time to consider pulling back in Burma and re-distributing the units there to other defensive positions. I've got some of the best divisions on map in Burma, and I'd like to replace some and bring the home. I'll begin pulling back by abandoning Rangoon, Pegu and the blocking hex nearby. All forces will move to Moulmein and from there about 1/3 will move immediately to other destinations.

After seeing the Allied response, the remaining block at Moulmein will be assessed. If he tries to come direct I want to see results of the river crossing into a forts 6 x2 hex between these large Armies. If not, and he choses to go around, or splits the force, I'll begin to move forces out and keep only a smaller army to delay at Moulmein. Or I might abandon it altogether.

Some depends on the success of his coastal campaign as well. I need to get a stop at Tavoy, or it's time to bail. I have two tank regiments and an ID along the route to reinforce, and they should be there within the week. He only landed to IDs worth of troops, so it might take a bit more to break through. He'll be able to quickly redistribute though after I leave Burma. That is the worry.

------------------------------------
TOTAL 16,024

JAPANESE losses

Feb 44: 12,266

Looking at the info screen the losses are slightly different, but the VP numbers are close to equal due to the number of 4Es lost.

ALLIED air loss VPs

Feb 44: 10,187
March 45: 28,222
------------------------------------
TOTAL 18,035

JAPANESE air loss VPs

Feb 44: 12,041
March 45: 30,319
------------------------------------
TOTAL 18,278

The total VP count ratio change is below.

ALLIED VPs

Feb 44: 25,588
March 45: 64,690
------------------------------------
TOTAL increase 39,102

JAPANESE VPs

Feb 44: 12,041
March 45: 30,319
------------------------------------
TOTAL 25,613

RATIO: feb 44 = 1.91

RATIO: mar 45 = 1.15

The Allies are making progress, but I'm still optimistic about the course of the game. The Allies seem to have a long way to go to the 2:1 mark, but the Japanese total VPs can go down from losing bases and having bases undersupplied. This is one reason I've waited so long to evacuate Burma. The longer it takes to get the territorial gains, the more pressure is put on the Allied position in a VP perspective.

Based ont eh content of the Allied troops now moving on toward Kushiro including the entire Army that had walked to Bihoro, I thought maybe the Allies would come and protect them a bit more from the daily bombings of the IJAAF. Fortunately I guessed rightly. Unfortunately, none of my sweeps flew to hit the CAP the moved in.

I had intended 5-6 groups of Ki-83 and Frank Ki-84r to fly from Muroran to hit the contested hex, and that would have been fun, since the entire DS seems to have moved in. I cancelled the IJAAF runs and saved a LOT of planes from getting smashed, but did lose around 300 because my naval planes flew gamely in to try to sneak under the Big Blue Blanket. Only a few did, and one actually got a kami hit on the Victorious, but I'm sure that wasn't severe on that armoured deck.

So a day of big losses that could have been very different. At least it wasn't as bad as it might have been. Everything is shut off for tomorrow.

On the 3rd my sweeps flew but so did the DS. Far away.

Happily, some of my air strike groups that I'd failed to turn off still flew and the attacks on Allied troops resumed, plus some Dates sank a few LSTs carrying what appears to be LOTS of support vehicles/AFVs. I'll take it.

The Allied focus on the outer Kuriles continued with Venturas and sweeps hitting.

Nothing new down South, but troops have started moving back from forward positions in Burma.

Virtually nothing happened on the 4th. This break is giving my fighter groups a good chance to replenish. Every day 1-3 air groups take on 10-12 airframes to get back to full strength. In about a week I could potentially begin to accumulate pools, but that's kind of a pipe dream against Dan. He does not stop. I think he'd sweep P-40Es at me if that's all that was left in the pools.

One thing I did notice during the DS visit was a lot more (50+) Wildcats in use of all variants. That's positive.

In the South Rangoon troops are moving now and will vacate in two days unless the Allies attack.

On the 5th night bombing resumed at Sapporo. The NF took care of business again. About 15-20 4E of various types taken out for only ~6k fires started.

The Allies also invade Shasukotan. Lots of small craft damaged/sunk by CD guns, but nothing major.

The scene up North. This reflects the lack of search right now since I lose too many planes when it's on. I'll use it for short bursts, but then turn it off.

A lot happening on the ground on the 6th. The Allies keep up a small night bombing of Sapporo, but mainly nail Shasukotan in preparation for the ground DA there. It gets a 2:1 and the base will fall soon, as expected. The landings still take a small toll, which is nice.

In the South the Allies try two DAs. One near Pegu alarmingly gets a 1:1 as the troops in reserve mode move out of the hex and lose their fortified status. Luckily it's today and they're almost all going to pass into the safe hex tomorrow. One ID will be left and could get caught out. Fingers crossed it makes it.

The Allies also try at Tavoy, but fail with a 1:2 that does not lower forts.

The Allies reclaim Rangoon, and now I have to book it out to make sure I have the rear defended.

Almost 150 4E including about 70 B-29s hit Sapporo manpower and airfield at night. The NF thwarted the majority but eventually they wore down and some of the later strikes hit for a decent amount of fires, up over 20k. The industry here is being whittled down, but at least there is a cost and it's a slow process.

Down South the Allied CVs moved into range of Victoria Point, resulting in some frustrating strikes. It seems they were close enough to be also protected by some LR CAP, and the strikes only got a few planes through. The only meaningful hit was on the King George V, one kami strike. Seems to be my MO.

The Allies take Shasukotan easily.

I did get lucky around Pegu where my very experienced ID did not make it out of the hex, but the Allies didn't attack. Only a bombardment. So all is good for this phase of the retreat, and all forces will move to Moulmein.

On the 8th the air war turned again. I needed to get some VPs back and sent in big sweeps to Urrupa-Jima where the Allie reportedly had a 160+ plane CAP. The Ki-83 groups tore into mostly Wildcats and one Corsair group. The result was 100+ Allied fighters gunned down to a loss of only 16 Ki-83 in A to A. I'll let those groups rest for a day and pick another target.

The Allies also obliged by trying a daylight attack on the recently reinforced CAP at Sendai. I've got some of the best groups there now, and they performed well, getting positive results against the P-51 and Corsair sweeps and sticking around for the 4E strikes, including a large force of B-29s. Today, finally, we got to them!

In the South big strikes hit Moulmein (and its big flak guns) and also the troops moving to Tavoy. I'd LR CAPed those this turn, resulting in a decent haul of 2E bombers and some sweepers. Now my groups are worn out and have to move back. All troops got out of the hex near Pegu, and now the troops from Rangoon and Pegu are moving back together. They should get to Moulmein safely within a few days.

Allied units again try for Tavoy, but fail to get a positive result or reduce the forts. Reinforcements should arrive in time here.

On the day about 25-30 B-29s are downed, plus another 20 odd other 4Es, and the Allies lose 180+ airframes. Japanese losses are about 80. The Allies also lost around 30 P-51D, which is a lot in a day.

Out of nowhere about 45 B-24s attacked Truk. Odd. Is something planned down there?

Getting to this many B-29s is a rarity. His sweeps are much less effective at long range, so I need to bear that in mind if he starts to use Kushiro and Wakkanai more often. I would there have an opportunity to use the sweeps effectively and possibly even bomb the fields, knowing flak would be tough.

On the 10th I sent in the dogs. All Ki-83 groups swept Shikuka. It was a test of what they can do, and what the Allies still have around. I chose this turn since almost all fighters in the North were back at home base, with only about 50 others on the Kuriles. It gave a very good idea of force composition and airframe types available. The results weren't bad either!

On the day we got about 1.5:1 over the Allied CAP. That's not bad against a base with a 1,000+ fighters in it. Not all were set for CAP unfortunately, but most were.

This bodes well for future runs here when the Allies are engaged in other pursuits or spread more thinly, and that is another thing I wanted to do. Make Dan have to consider defensive options. For a long while I've been hanging back, not striking often, picking opportunities. I'll continue that work, but there will come a time when I can really let loose. After this new crop of trainees is ready, in only a few weeks thanks to the massive influx of training groups now on map, I'll have much more grist for the mill.

In the South action has quieted down now that reinforcements reached Tavoy effectively. The Allies look to be moving back to Mergui. I await the next developments here. My troops at Moulmein now have more flak than in Tokyo, and every bombing run there will be painful for the Allies!

The Allies look to still be moving toward Truk in the Central Pacific. Lots of fun to be had there if they do land.

The Allies come back strong to Sapporo at night on the 11th. The first wave gets through the NF and gets big fires going. They reach nearly 150k at one point in the night, reducing mostly the resources here.

The NF and flak do take a tithe, with around 15-18 4E of various types downed on the day. I'll keep rotating NF groups to get fresh pilots and airframes in here.

I see some amphibs approaching Truk. There could be a landing any day now. Bombers continue tot hit the base doing very little to the troops.

Here is a shot of Truk. I've got one regiment there, and a naval guard and part of a brigade have been flying in the past few days. If the base gets to around 250AV it'll provide a bit more difficulty considering the terrain and forts 6. I'd like to see the CD guns in action though!
