The third game of the Last Sixteen knock-out round sees:-

Spain 1 Russia 1 AET Russia winning on penalties 3-4,

Spain took 120 minutes to prove beyond any doubt that possession without purpose is pointless. The Spanish obsession with possession (yep, having fun with words) actually worked against the Spanish team. They tried to stretch the Russian defence laterally but forgot to stretch them vertically. Russia were hugely defensive and smarter team than Spain will have the task of breaking this Russian defence. Overall, Spain have been very disappointing in this World Cup. Spain are probably the best team in the competition for passing backward and square. This is about as good as it gets for Russia.

Best wishes,
Steve

Not the best game of the round but gripping in its own way. I think Spain were the orchestrators of their own downfall; the way they played in the first half was like watching England - square ball after square ball, no penetration, no inventiveness. Every time a Spanish midfielder got the ball they stood still. What was that all about? If Spain had played like they did in extra time then Russia would have struggled to keep them at bay for 90 minutes.

Pleased for Russia as they are the home nation, but that is Messi, Ronaldo and Iniesta all gone....

... and why on earth was Koke kept on the pitch, let alone allowed to take a penalty???

Yes, he was pretty awful all game..

The lack of imagination in that Spanish team is damning.

Best wishes,
Steve

And that's why short Xavi aka The Brain, the director of the orchestra is missed. In the old days, they would easily create and / or find a hole = the whole purpose of possession (that the anti tiki-taka mob never grasped; it was deadly and effective = 2 Euros + 1 WC). They were masters at finding / creating such holes and stabbing the opposition with lethal definitive passes.

You don't have that guy? Time to elaborate another plan suited to the players you actually have. Today has been one of the most sterile scenarios I have seen in a long time.

Something is really wrong when your central defenders conduct the ball (Ramos and Piqué).

Well done, Russia.

More to the point, a lot of nations that have the knack of winning things (sometimes regardless of how well they are playing) like Germany, Spain, Argentina, Italy (ok they never arrived but ...) have gone.

The lack of cussedness among most of the nations still there is making this a surprisingly open competition?

It is a false problem, with 32 nations at the beginning of the World Cup, one will not leave, will not cry and will be happy.

After the first round of games I thought Croatia would win that easily. I ended up desperately wanting Denmark because Croatia were rubbish. Where did the team that took Argentina apart go??

Modric should have been ready to continue running with the baton for man of the tournament but he was just totally ineffective....and as for the penalty - it was so bad Schmeichel not just saved it, but held onto it!

A real shame for Denmark who really tried but in the final analysis were just short on the quality required to beat a really off key Croatia. I think this could be a wake up call for the Croats and still tip them to make the final.

The fourth game in the last-sixteen round of the knock-out stage sees:-

Croatia 1 Denmark 1 AET 3-2 on penalties. I wanted to know if Croatia were genuine challengers. On this showing - probably not. Croatia scrapped through on penalties with Modric having a penalty saved with three minutes of extra time remaining. A tense and tight encounter, Denmark scored first in the first minute and Croatia equalized three minutes later. Denamrk don't have a cutting edge, and Croatia's cutting edge not working well enough in this game.

2nd Quarter-Final: Russia v Croatia

Best wishes,
Steve

Sadly I'm at work for the first but will be watching the second. It's about time Mexico did something... and there's no better example of 'doing something' than sending Brazil home

I have been pensioner for a couple of years. Old age has some advantages....

Would love to see Mexico do well and I would love to see Japan take the game to Belgium. Not sure they will though.

Best wishes,
Steve

The disappointment in Spain is absolute.
The famous "tiki-taka" is a neurotic disorder without a Xavi or a young Iniesta: 80% possesion, +1100 pass... and only 2 shots (the goal was a own russian goal). Ramos and "crazyhand" Piqué conducting the ball, as Tullius Detritus said, is shameful for the spanish supporters.

Now, this world cup may be a walk for brasilians if France or Uruguay don´t stop them. I don´t trust Mexico.

Btw, England has a good chance for the final. Really, I think her worst enemy is Colombia in sixteen.

I'm liking this WC a lot. Some great matches, surprises.

Worth mentioning the doomsayers (medias + some russophobia no doubt) were wrong. Well, so far. No ultras, no racist chants. Journalists even talk about friendly fans fraternising with each other. As it should be, by the way, this is game, and nothing else but a game.

The fifth of the Last-Sixteen round of games sees:-

Brazil 2 Mexico 0. The Brazilians win it in spite of the hard work of the Mexicans. Essentially, the Brazilian cutting edge is sharper than the Mexican. Another enjoyable game to watch plus a goal and an assist for Neymar. After a tight first half, Brazil eased themselves ahead in the second as the Mexican work-rate faded in the heat. This Brazilian is not the free-flowing attacking force they have been in the past, however, their defence is tougher and they still have the flair and imagination when they need it.

We will know their quarter-finals after the Belgium v Japan game later today but Belgium are by far the favourites for that game. A Brazil v Belgium quarter final is a mouth-watering prospect.

Best wishes,
Steve

Chadli does what he couldn't do for Spurs...and has a good game

I'm glad Jan the Man made up for his error and did what he doesn't do for Spurs i.e. score a goal, but absolutely gutted for the Japanese. They did themselves proud and gave it a real go.

At least Brazil vs Belgium should be tasty.

One quarter-final left to be decided....

The sixth game of the Last Sixteen round of knockout games sees:-

Belgium 3 Japan 2. A fascinating first half gave way to a cracking second half. 0-0 at half time, Japan did what I wanted and take the game to Belgium and got their reward early in the second half as they went 0-2 up. From there, it was the story of a shell-shocked Belgium digging deep to claw their way back only to win it with the last kick of the game. Japan were magnificent, Belgium went through nine hells and came through in the end with some quality finishes. It is heart breaking for the Japanese but they can hold the heads up high for a wonderful, wonderful effort. Belgium proved that they have the character to go all the way.

This World Cup is the gift that keeps on giving. Brazil v Belgium is the third quarter-final.

Best wishes,
Steve
