York City 3 Braintree Town 0

Disappointing result but not exactly a shock as everyone expects York to climb out of the relagation zone. York were relegated out of the Football League last season, lost all their players, had to bring in 19 players during the summer to build a new squad and they have had trouble getting some team cohesion going as a result. They are, at last, beginning to look like a team now. Braintree have similar problems. Lincoln took the Braintree management team and half the Braintree squad moved on elsewhere.

North Ferriby winning 1-0 at Forest Green warmed the cockles of even my cold heart...

Hope little Harry Winks is okay. We lost three players to injury today and Harry's in particular looked like a nasty one, requiring oxygen and a stretcher......

He looked to be in considerable pain. It's been quite a bad week for injuries.

Best wishes,
Steve

Indeed - we are past 39 points so I am hopeful that the drop will be avoided. It's now just a case of how low do we finish?

I beg to differ. The question is whether I will win the bet, or not.

Want to double the stakes?

Make the bet include a refill?

So you think I will win as well.

I want to take the opportunity to remind you that the winner gets the honour of buying a cup of tea for the loser. With refill.

Edit2: I tried to make a joke about the first part of your statement but, obviously, I didn't think it through before I posted.

The battle of the Royal Navy bases today - unlike last year both have a chance of promotion to league 1. A draw is probably the best result - c'mon you Pilgrims / Pompey

I agree that a draw is probably the best result for both especially since there is clear water between the top three and the chasing pack.

Braintree (21st) have a must win game today at home to Guiseley (17th).

Southport (24th) go to Dover (6th). I think Southport have given up and Dover (who can't bloody well stop scoring) are pushing for a play-off place ...

North Ferriby (23rd) are at home to Eastleigh (13th). North Ferriby are capable of beating anyone and Eastleigh have been seriously underacheiving this season. Nevertheless, an Eastleigh win seems likely...

Torquay (22nd) have to go to Lincoln (1st)... Can't see much beyond a Lincoln win there...

Woking (20) are at home to Macclesfield (9th).. Come on the Silkmen!

York (19th) (biggest underachievers this season) go to Solihull (18th) ... That's going to be interesting. Solihull are still reeling from that 9-0 thrashing. You would expect both sides to be fighting like hell in this game...

Maidstone (16th) have to go to Wrexham (12th)... One of those games that could go anywhere. Wrexham don't have anything to play for although some good old Welsh pride is enough to keep them honest....

Sutton (15th) are at home to Gateshead (8th)... A place in the play-offs seems to have passed Gateshead by it will be interesting to see how they react to that...

Well, that's my take on the battle against relegation from the National League this Good Friday.

Happy Easter everyone.

Best wishes,
Steve

National League Battle Against Relegation

Braintree 2 Guiseley 0
Dover 3 Southport 0
Lincoln 2 Torquay 1
North Ferriby 2 Eastleigh 1
Solihull 1 York 2
Sutton 3 Gateshead 0
Woking Dammit 1 Macclesfield Mugs 0
Wrexham 1 - Maidstone 3

1 Lincoln City 42 41 91
2 Tranmere 43 35 86
3 Forest Green 43 34 84
4 Dag & Red 43 25 79
5 Dover 42 23 75

6 Aldershot 43 23 73
7 Barrow 43 16 69
8 Gateshead 43 20 67
9 Macclesfield 42 10 66
10 Bromley 43 -8 58
11 Boreham Wood 43 4 55
12 Wrexham 43 -15 54
13 Sutton United 43 -5 53
14 Eastleigh 43 -6 53
15 Maidstone 42 -16 53
16 Chester 43 -2 52
17 Guiseley 43 -16 49
18 York 43 -13 48
19 Woking 43 -15 48
20 Solihull Moors 43 -17 48
21 Braintree 43 -19 48
22 Torquay 43 -12 44
23 North Ferriby 43 -43 39
24 Southport 43 -44 35

I wish I knew how to get that table formatted. The stats are Games Played, Goal Difference, and Points.

All eyes in Braintree now focused on the trip to Torquay on Easter Monday.....

There were more nerves than skill on display at Cressing Road and it was a a first half designed to put everyone to sleep. Still, it was better in the second half and with Braintree securing all three lovely points...

Southport are now relegated. They cannot escape the drop.

It was a good win for North Ferriby. They have been the league's whipping boys all season which was totally unfair. They are not a bad side but they have lacked a belief in themselves... Probably too late for them to escape but at long last they are playing with a freedom that comes from a "We may be going down but, you know what, we are just as good as you" attitude. Good for them.

Torquay tried but .... it was away to Lincoln...

The bottom four stay in the same position. They only moves at the bottom were Solihull dropping to 20th and both York and Woking Dammit moving above them.

At the top, Lincoln look good for the title. Tranmere drew 2-2 with Aldershot. Dover move above Aldershot and into the play-off places. With both Lincoln and Dover having a game in hand.... will anything change in the top five before the end of the season?

Gateshead look as if they have resigned themselves to a top half finish. The play-offs look beond them now.

There are now four teams on 48 points. There are three games left. Torquay need to beat Braintree to stand any chance and Braintree need to beat Torquay in what could well be the game that decides Braintree's season.

Best wishes,
Steve

A real 6-pointer on Monday!

Meanwhile elsewhere:

Championship
Really pleased for Chris Hughton, Brighton are almost there.

As for the play-offs, difficult to know who I want to go up. If they get in the play-offs I guess I have to say Fulham, but I would be happy if it was Sheffield Wednesday or Huddersfield Town.

League 1
Sheffield United are up thank goodness. What the hell are the Sheffield clubs doing????

League 2
Got the draw yesterday that means Plymouth are 1 point from going up and Portsmouth are almost there too. Just need Exeter to win the play-offs and that would be a right old result.

So sad about Leyton Orient though

Is that a Phoenix I see hovering over Leyton Orient? Might be the best thing to happen to them for years...

If Sheffield has been having a tough time, how about Coventry?

There is a new age of football coming...

Best wishes,
Steve

Coventry is a bit sad; they were 1st Division regulars when I was growing up, but they were relative late comers. The Sheffield clubs are a different story - especially Sheffield Wednesday. A large, important city - certainly in the steel making hayday - Sheffield needs one or two top clubs. The support for both is massive still - I hope they can make it back to the big time and stay there.

Harry Kane scores his 20th, what has it been since that last happened for a Spurs player? 50 or so years? Gratz!

Jimmy Greaves 1967 I think. In the Premier League era we are talking Shearer, Henry and Van Nistelroy..... so not bad for a one season wonder.

We'll probably sell him to Man Utd in the summer after collapsing to finish 5th behind Arsenal.....

You on drugs?

Your last 5 matches: wins; you grabbed all the points. If only Chelsea were not unstoppable, you might even bag the title.

That has to be some ancestral pessimism.

I think you missed the long-running joke on this thread, albeit a joke borne out of an all to sad reality.

Let me enlighten you:

Yes, I haven't read everything.

Let me see if I well understood: Conte created an unstoppable machine. With the team, players Mourinho had (total shambles).

I was thinking more of the financial difficulties with Coventry following on from the dire straits that Leyton Orient find themselves in.

The situation in Sheffield is most curious. The highs and lows of football in Sheffield could fill a book or two (three if you inlcude Hillsborough) and, considering the size of the city and the large support for the clubs, it seems most strange that only isolated flashes of success punctuate the unremitting gloom of mediocrity.

Best wishes,
Steve

think that for both Sheffield clubs its a horrible reminder of the damage a particular type of owner can do. The bunch of cowboys who leeched Utd for cash and of course *Sir* Dave who wrecked Wednesday on his way to greater things at the FA.

However, second main event of the weekend is that Partick Thistle (avg attendance 6,000) are well on the way to cementing their place in the top half of the SPL and even I, who was born the year that Spurs last won the league, can't quite believe that just maybe they can do it this season?

Well good luck to Partick Thistle - but with regard to Tottenham, I think it is quite simple. We have to play Arsenal and Manchester United + a recovering Crystal Palace and not least, that perenial bogey team for us West Ham United.

So I think that even in the spectacularly unlikely event that Chelsea collapse (have you seen the dross they play in 5 of their last 6 games?) then we still wouldn't be able to bridge the gap.

I think a Europa League spot for us is secure though.......and maybe even scrape a Champions League place....possibly.
