For the Luftwaffe its Stuka time again - 3 Ju-87 attacks in the north at Riga, east of Parnu and Pskov, while in the south, one air mission is kept in reserve for re-basing. There are a couple of tasty tank busters needing to be brought to the front....

The Soviets have a fighter in Riga anyway so they decide to contest that battle - you never know, they might get lucky... The Germans counter with just one fighter - the 7-quality Fw-190.

Round 1

13 (AC) The Stuka is cleared through
11 (No Effect)

That was all over quickly (as the actress said to the Bishop) and so to the ground strikes:

In the north, the Germans get a 50% success rate
At Pskov, the air mission was a complete washout...
In Riga, one unit out of three was hit.

Not startling but okay.

Three attacks are planned: Riga, east of Parnu and northwest of Kharkov.

In the south Koniev attempts HQ Support, as does Manstein in Riga. The Germans also bring in a Heinkel over the Latvian capital, but they mis-judged the air battles.

In the northern hex - and once again, only needing one bomber through, the Soviets contest the hex. The Luftwaffe counter with two fighters...

First battle is east of Parnu. Its 6.3:4.0 in favour of the Germans.

Round 1

11 (No Effect)
13 (DA) The Soviet has to choose a fighter of bomber to abort. They choose the front bomber.

Round 2

10 (No Effect)
14 (AA) The German has the choice and aborts the Soviet Bomber... combat therefore over.

And so to the land battles.

First up is the Estonian hex. This is a 2:1 +1 on the Blitzkrieg table. With the offensive blunted in the south, the Germans could really do with this...

...its a 6(7). The Soviets must retreat but the Germans are all disorganised - another poor throw...

Next up its Riga. A 4:1 +1 on the Assault table...

....4(5) Another pretty rubbish throw. The Soviets lose two units but again it comes at a cost of disorganisation and a loss to the Germans.

And so to the final battle. Will the Soviets have any more luck down south?

This is a 2:1 no modifier - the Germans have calculated wrongly as they have no armour present. Its going to be an Assault....

...its a 6. All Germans disorganised at the cost of 1 defender. That was a bad, bad turn...

The Allied turn consists of a lot of shuffling of units - but there is nothing rally positive they can do. I need a plan!

The chances of the US declaring war on Japan are ridiculously low - 20%

The Japanese - in an excellent position in China - therefore decide to declare war only on the Commonwealth and will attempt to take Burma and threaten India.

Meanwhile the Germans have used their HQ to reorganise what they can in order to try and keep some sort of offensive going.

The Luftwaffe send a Stuka in for a ground strike against Vitebsk which the Soviets defend with an I-17 and the Luftwaffe intercept with a Ju-88C.

Round 1

9 (AC) the Stuka is cleared through
6 (AA) the Soviet fighter is aborted but it does not matter. The air throws have been really tame over the last few turns...

...as has the ground striking - two 9's means no hits registered.

Two attacks are made in the Soviet Union - Riga and northwest of Kharkov.

The odds for the attack in the Ukraine is 3:1 (no modifier) on the Assault table, as the Germans are still short of Armour there...

..its still not brilliant - a 6 - but it gets the job done at the cost of disorganisation.

The German offensives in the Soviet Union are largely blunted now so its a case of re-arranging what they can for the Russians, although they do form the nucleus of a counter attacking force south of Gomel under Zhukov (Stalin dreams of Uranus).

In China, with the Japanese threatening Burma, Chiang has ordered his troops south, The Japanese have an HQ problem and so its time to start posing a few questions...

..and then the turn ends.

The Germans will use this turn to try and end resistance in the Baltics. Three ground strikes are planned for two hexes - Parnu and the hex northwest of Lake Peipus. The Soviets can get four fighters to the latter, but are outgunned and so stay on the ground for now.

Once again the ground strikes are less than impressive - hit out of 5...

The Germans need to hold fire in the south as the Soviet build up around Gomel is starting to look a little ominous. This impulse will feature an attack on Parnu and another on Vitebsk. Damn!! I forgot to cancel an attack northeast of Kharkov...

The Soviets try and use HQ Support for this latter attack, while Rommel tries to provide the same for the assault on Vitebsk. The Luftwaffe also call for Stuka support there.

In the south this could be a very costly mistake for the Germans and the Soviets bring in 3 fighters and 2 bombers to try and make them suffer. The Germans have little choice but to bring in all three fighters in the south that can reach.

The is an important air battle and the Soviets actually have the advantage this time - albeit marginal 6.9:7.0...

7 (DA) The Germans must abort their front fighter.. bad start.
13 (No Effect)

The odds are now loaded in the Soviet's favour. The Germans dare not risk it and abort.

..its a 7. 1 loss each and the Germans are disorganised. The last couple of turns are not proving great for Adolf and chums....

The Commonwealth decide its time to act in the Mediterranean... A Royal Navy task force sets sail for the Western Mediterranean. Admiral Cunningham is given command of the fleet. The fleet includes the new 46,000 ton battleship HMS Temeraire. Cunningham politely declines the offer of a berth in the Royal Navy's newest edition - and gives the same response to the suggestion he should make use of the Prince of Wales or Howe. "HMS Warspite will do for me as my Flagship, thank-you!"

If the answer to both question is yes then it looks like something is a bit wrong with the entry pools. CAn you post a picture of it?

The invasion of Sardinia is attempted by General Alexander and the men of the 4th Canadian Infantry Corps + Royal Marines.

Shore bombardment is provided by the "old faithfuls" of the RN's battlefleet and no ground support is required.

The attack is automatic and the CW are on foreign soil at last.

I've played 34 but took my carriers out as I was told I was making too big a target for the Japanese.
