Check the Aircraft and Engine Production Pool screen.

I think it means you sent planes back to the pools. More than you lost.

Right - the +8 is the balance in the inventory after the returned aircraft arrive, and the -8 is under the "Used so far" column, the negative value being the opposite of being used ; i.e. returned.

I'm not so sure. It's in the "air to air losses" section.

...maybe you had 8 defectors?

OHH! I didn't realize that was on the intel summary screen you were talking about, not the Aircraft Pool screen I was assuming.
Very strange result in the tally for the day. Maybe you hijacked some of his planes in mid-air? Or they tried to kamikaze on your HBs and all they achieved was imbedding their fighter in the side so they got carried back to your base?

Have you upgraded all your American infantry units to the 42 squads that came on in July? I am just starting the process. Even with decent experience it is amazing how tough it is for Allied units in 1942 to fight Japanese units on a 1-1 basis. I can now see how Japanese tanks are so fierce in 42 because Allied squads have such pitiful AT values. The American squads get 25% more firepower in mid 42 (garand rifle, I suppose) and their AT value goes from 15 to 35 (first bazookas). However all Commonwealth squads remain very weak until 1943, when their anti tank values go from 5 to around 75. (God bless the piat). 1943 really sees the scales turn. It can't come fast enough for me...

I've been upgrading the US units, yes, and almost time for 43 now! Looking forward to it.

There is still one kind of Allied unit that can fight on semi-equal terms; the Marines. I hope to get them more use soon!

Whatever happens I must say I loved this campaign in China. Seeing a real campaign, tough, painful for both players, costly for the japanese, etc. is really a nice thing to see. Kudos on your resistance so far.

Yeah, Nick is still cursing under his breath about several battles. It's not been easy for either of us I can tell you, but the challenge has been fun. I wanted to try to put into practice what i've found difficult on the other side, but the SL have been an entirely new thing to get used to. I do like them. If Nick balances his forces he faces long slog. If he uses all tanks he takes tank losses which are slow to replace. If he uses heavy arty and less infantry he breaks me down slowly, but can't take the hex unless he switches those out for more AV. It's interesting.

Okay. Maybe that's it. Just never saw planes being withdrawn or swapped out showing up as ops losses.

Marines in 42 are still superior to Japanese squads in soft fire power (I think they had larger squads than US Army) and just get more godly with time. The squads eventually have double the firepower of a Japanese squad. Additionally Marine divisions get a lot of machine gun squads. It just put everybody else to shame. If I recall by 1945 it was normal for all marine squads to have a flame thrower. Talk about a FP boost. I only look at the editor once in a while but it sure does help to understand game mechanics to look these things over on occasion.

Dec 2 - 4, 1942

INDIA: The second phase begins on the tip of India, landing paras in four vacant bases. Support troops will arrive tomorrow by rail. About 180 fighters, moslty P-40K move into benares in a show of force more than an active LR CAP. I'll cover that base and see what the reaction is for now. Marines and other troops ready to head out of Benares once more AA shows up.

CENT PAC: All major fleet units are at Canton and will move out for another foray here soon. B-17E groups hit Nauru but due to weather and flak, accumulation of damage is slow here. Only shown at 9 for the fields.

SO PAC: I got an interesting coast watcher report on the 1st and this led to a scrabble to see what I could get to explore it.

Coastwatcher Report: CVL Chitose reported in port at Umboi Island

I loaded up one PBY group with good ground attack pilots and transferred the last remaining B-17D group to Cairns where they'd have a long range shot at Umboi Island. I set F4F-7 recon planes to have a look. Everything flew, but to no avail. Not a single hit on anything. I wasn't able to even tell if this report was good intel or if this was an AG sitting there, or nothing at all.

The same report occurred a few days later again but recon during the day show nothing in the report. The good thing is that I noticed fighters moved to Umboi and ships moved out of Rabaul port.

Also got this, the first sighting of the J1N1-C Irving. He's got recon legs in the Pacific now.

J1N1-C Irving sighted over Normanton

CHINA: Nick takes an empty Kweiyang after our battered troops move back. Another successful retreat without too much devastation. This cuts off about 1,500AV, seven Corps, an Army HQ and a base force in the Tuyun pocket. I'll try and hold in the good terrain here to delay a solid LOC using the rail lines for the Japanese.

Nick has been heavily bombing Changsha and now Wenchow. He's also sending in one DD bombardments at that base. Surprisingly successful.

SIGINT: Aha! This unit has moved back in! What other surprises will be over here soon?

1/5th Amphibious Brigade is located at Esperance(56,153).

This is the track I expect Nick will try to take. Lots of x2 terrain. He's shown a willingness to go off road, and this makes a lot of sense here. Especially forgoing the river crossing. It's going to be tough to stop three tanks divisions and all of the other little regiments trailing along in this territory.

Yeah, I've been looking much more often in this game, trying to figure out why my Allied troops suck. Seeing the Marines' numbers perked me up a bit!

Still, I won't think in 'superior' terms yet. The IJA in India have a LOT of high exp units. Who knows, Madras could have 9 forts by now too!

Regardless of what is actually going on in the game, an Allied player can look forward to two days each month - 15th and last day of the month when the big reinforcements come out. When you have month after month of about 8 Fletchers arriving on the 15th, it does tend to bring a smile to your face. 16 DDs come in across the board in all of Aug '43!!

Y, nothing like viewing the Allied reinforcement schedules to get through the dark days. Congrats to obvert for reacting well to GJ's onslaught. The loss of Burma, India, Ceylon & North-/West-Coast Oz must have been hard to bear, but the defense of China is already an 'epic for the annals', & recent gains in the Solomons & CentPac are a v. bright point.

One thing wrt Allied reinfs - many USAAF bomber groups resize upwards in early '44, so it's kinda important to start 4 months beforehand to train a boatload of USArmy pilots in GrdB skill. I used the majority of my rear-area USArmy Fighter groups for this purpose, training lots of newb replacement pilots & high Def-skill Fighter pilots for eventual transfer to bomber air-groups.

Dec 5 - 7, 1942

ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!!

SUBS: The Halibut runs into an old CL and DDs near the Marshalls. No hits, but good to know the CAs aren't out here, just some rusty old CLs.

INDIA: All of the newly acquired Indian bases get engineers and build a fort and get close to a field. There is no reaction yet.

I've also noticed that the stack near Patna has decreased and the small block near Ranchi is very small, around 25k troops in x2 terrain. This is on a gray road one hex from my main stack, and I'm thinking of running that way and trying to hit it. The benefit of the last try here is that a lot of units have better experience now. I have 3,100AV in good divisions and armor, and I'm pretty sure that if I can get an attack on the road to Ranchi against 20k troops, it could go well. Pretty sure. Not entirely positive. Worth a try though, and I'll include deception that I'm moving toward Patna again make him think it could go either way.

CENT PAC: A CA bombardment does really well at Nauru. I ran this in from 16 hexes and left it to bombard in the daylight, mainly because I saw that last turn my bombers didn't fly due to weather but he had moved in 50+ fighters to Nauru. I actually managed to catch them both in the air with a P-38 sweep and later in the day on the ground withe the cruisers.

The score was 10:1 in the air and another 9-12 lost on the ground. The bombardment does nicely against the troops as well, but still no more than cursory info on what is here. All I know is that there is the big IJN base force with 30AV and DP guns, a Naval Guard, some AA and some engineers. Nine units are listed for ~9k troops, so I feel I'm still missing something here.

On the way out DD Balch, a Porter class, hits a mine. She's okay with 24/14/3 damage and makes it back doing 30 knots with the rest. A few mines are cleared in a more conventional sense, but this is also good to know for the future.

SO PAC: Ontong Java is taken with no resistance or reaction, yet. This is quite far out on a limb, but I'll fly in some troops and supply and get things building. Right now it provides an immediate PBY base for ops in Cent Pac to see the approaches from Rabaul. Rossel Island makes a field and a port. Troops are prepped for Milne Bay, but I'll need some air cover for that one and I have little info on the base. I'll need recon and a bombardment to go in before a definite choice on landing.

CHINA: The Japanese attack South of Kweiyang with two infantry and one tank division and get a bit of a surprise. These Chinese units are battle hardened and experienced, and in x3 hold well, dishing out nearly 400 disabled Japanese infantry squads with another 25 vehicles disabled. They'll now be able to dig a bit, but supply will continue to be an issue. Still, any delay is a good delay.

While this feels like progress, it's slow, and taking Madras back would actually give a huge boost to what we can do in the area. It could be tough if this is about two divisions (or equivalents). I know there has been both a Division, the 6th Guards, and a garrison force here, so usually around 150AV with little in terms of arty.

6th Guards Division is located at Madras(35,40).
16th AA Regiment is located at Madras(35,40).
1/9th Ind.Hvy.Art. Battalion is loaded on xAK Asakaze Maru at Madras (35,40).
10th Garrison unit is located at Madras(35,40).

The routes for transport across the Pacific have trend toward more Southerly areas and have been consistently routed toward several hubs to feed the growing number of ships and units in Central and South Pacific areas.

All TFs travel from the West Coast routed to or around the edge of Christmas Island, then on to Pago and Suva. Noumea is built up but lass frequently used so far. Once I have more action in So Pac and an active SW Pac this will change.

Secondary hubs are located at Canton Island, Tabiteuaea, Luganville and increasingly Ndeni.

You've been playing the Dark side too long.

Marines fight on superior terms.

I doubt that, Japanese forts build so slow and cost so much to build. Da Babes seems to make it even harder for the Japanese player to fortify. The problem is that he would need almost all of his construction capacity in India to build a base up to that level. But over time anything is possible....

UPGRADES/REFITS

As December hits a lot f ships have upgrades to start on, including ALL of the fleet subs. These are short, so I'll rotate them out, but want to get them done to be ready for the better torps come 1/43. A few BBs go into loooong upgrades and lots of transports are getting better AA.

I've just barely finished the 10/42 upgrades for most of the USN. The CVs and their escorts are a lot more pric-kly now with the Bofors addition.

I can only imagine what these kinds of lists are going to loo like in 44-46!!

SS S-46 begins refit while under repair at Christmas Island

Also, these are now starting to arrive!!

Actually, is it the 1/43 sub upgrade where most fleet units lose their ability to carry mines? I try to hold back eight or ten from upgrading for this reason.

Here is a good tip. I try to keep fast Aks and Aps in Cape Town or Eastern US. You can run an American infantry division from the US to Cape Town using full speed with no penalty in about 15 days. Then I don't off load but run them directly to Bombay at full speed from Cape Town. Takes about 7-8 days for them to get to the map entry hex where I have a TF of about six large cargo ships sitting. They can then pull fuel from this TF and continue onto Bombay at full speed without missing a beat. About 25 days from the US to Bombay...As long has he is not patrolling the entry hex, you are good to go. Works well for Karachi if you need it.

I just noticed that the Mk 10 mines go out of production at this point too. If that is true, and I can't mine with another mine type, I may as well get the upgrade. I haven't checked but I assume there are still subs that use mines. The Dutch and British, maybe? Can't look now, but I'd like to know as I do use this feature often.

I've used full speed from East Coast for some units, and send them to Mombasa still at full, where they then pick up escorts and go from there at mission speed. Still pretty fast, and keeps me from forgetting or getting some stuck out of fuel going from off to on-map.

SUBS: The Haddo launches 6 at a big AO with no luck. Found this TF up near Kusaie though, and that means he's using a good deal of fuel up here.

The I-168 hits DMS Dorsey running toward Nauru and sinks her. Escorts also sunk an RO sub near Ocean Island.

CENT PAC: The almost invasion. Over the past week I'd been feeling out the possibility of moving on Nauru with two regiments, one Marine and one US Army. They've been loaded and I've had multiple SCTFs, including two old BBs, plus the Wasp TF and another TF of five CVE. After a few days of maneuvering I got about 60 ships to within one hex of Nauru and they appeared to have no detection. I think some might have been seen, but there was no search running from Nauru, so it's possible they weren't even noticed! The Japanese closed South of Kusaie (probably looking at my bombardment run in with the CA TF near Ocean that showed 10/10 DL) and I've decided to pull back instead of landing the two regiments. I'm still not sure the base is softened enough, and I can't wait here and make sure air strikes go in and bombardments do their work before landing, so I ordered BBs to bombard and run and the rest to pull back immediately.

This could still be dicey if he does run in, but I've sent all TFs toward Abemama/Kuria with a lot of LBA support there. It should be okay judging by what we've been seeing from search. Depressing to have everything work up to the last minute and then pull the plug, but it seemed the right choice and lets hope it's a fizzle he never even knows about.

Did lose some YMS here and a the DMS to the I-168.

INDIA: More maneuvering here. He's reinforcing the hex near Ranchi. Our troops have pulled back and are holding the road while reducing the

SO PAC: Just building and throwing more supply at Tulagi and Lunga. I have to hold off for some units prepping next bases and just make sure the infrastructure can support the next jump.

CHINA: The IJAAF sent three sweeps into Chungking that got massacred. He flew them at 15k, most likely a mistake, and lost about 50 fighters on the day for 7 Allied losses. Probably a lot of good IJA pilots KIA/MIA too. This will even the field in China for a week or two.

SIGINT: Now I have info that the Imperial Guards Division is at Broome. Maybe the section reported in Perth was left, but some is also at Broome?

Imperial Guards Division is located at Broome(62,127).

Here is the situation. The IJN 9 hexes (whew) from my forces, and looking ominous. We could be able to handle this, but I'd rather not have carnage of troops and CV/CVE getting hit out here in the open if it can be avoided. The LBA should either shield us (by keeping the IJN away out of range) or tip the balance in our direction if he does move that way.

Take it as a minor strategic win - he has burned some fuel.
Oh, order more YMS' - the perfect TT magnet. :-)

I think you did right here, maybe there was something else waiting for you.
So many subs?

So many subs is right!! By this point in game I rarely tie my subs to other fleet movement but use them almost solely for interdiction purposes. Any thoughts on which doctrine works better and when?? Early in war I can see using the US fleet boats as garbage scows or scarecrows but this point they become useful.

Actually, is it the 1/43 sub upgrade where most fleet units lose their ability to carry mines? I try to hold back eight or ten from upgrading for this reason.

No, the subs (American only) can then use the MK12 mine which replaces the MK10. It is without a doubt the most powerful mine in the game. The equivalent in killing power of a long lance. But, it can only be laid by subs so save some for that purpose.

I do think sighting that massive replenishment TF is a very good indication of the cost of fighting out here for the IJN. These big fleets have been moving around, trying to avoid subs and search, for more than a month.

My subs are concentrated in the Cent Pac and So Pac areas and off the tip of India. No where else currently. Concentration of their use allows better recon/info from sightings and attacks, and it also is a psychological tool. As the Japanese player it's not fun to see 20 subs in the area you need to move through, and I know it affects my decisions on that side regularly.

It can also lead to IJN planes flying lots of search/ASW missions which can lead to opening for strikes well into their territory. I've moved the DDs doing ASW back toward Tarawa just for this purpose. If he moves away I might just run up to try to pick off that collection of oilers.

These aren't linked to fleet movements, but are linked to theaters where I've been trying to move forward. The subs are there to scout and strike and scare.

In So Pac they are still hauling supply to places like Deboyne Island and Ontong Java, and that is very worth it if those become good search bases or jumping off points. Still a few weeks from better torpedoes anyway.

Odd that some have been upgraded and still show using the Mk 10, while others show using the Mk 12. I'll have to look into this further, but thanks for bringing it up. Never considered they would lose mining ability.

CHINA

Here is the situation in China. Nick has poured over the river and now is moving to the crossing hex from the safe side. He'll most likely pound away with nearly all tanks there soon. I've begun building up in all of the rough hexes beyond and along the gray road. It's getting desperate, but with the Changsha and Tuyun pockets self-contained, supply is flowing more quickly to the areas near Kweiyang at this point.

Although units are prepping for Sian, Changsha and even Wenchow, and I know exactly where they are in relation to those bases, none of them have been threatened lately except from the air.

Air Losses

A god turn for the defenders of Chungking. While the smaller LR CAP battles haven't gone our way, this one certainly makes up for a lot of that and could have ramifications for a long time if a lot of good pilots were lost. It certainly made our groups even stronger.

Has this oil not been repaired or is this just my residual and incomplete info about the base?

Hasn't been repaired. As far as I know, this is always accurate after a few days...
