The main allied fleet is covering the area north of Ponape. Seems like he has got troops incoming towards the island. He must have figured that the CVEs were enough..?

Or rather not placing the DS out in front?

From Mundy's AAR it seems that the KB attacked from the north east of Wake. Putting the DS in front would not have helped!

Well, to me out front would be one hex N of Wake, so in that case it might have done a lot. If the KB's location is not known then it's a bit difficult to land troops with only CVEs unless you're hitting all fronts at once. Even LBA can do a lot against CVEs though.

I just lost confidence in CVEs... I will keep them always very close to the real deal CVs

Could you elaborate on the B-29s losses? how did you achieve them; how many squadron did you commit? was it all in one base?

The B29s were shot down over Calcutta.. He had some coordination problems with his sweeps and the 29s ran into a mixed, layered CAP of Franks R, George K2, Jack and Oscar IV fighters.. Around 400 strong

Ouch! Sending B-29s to attack air bases defended by 400 fighters is not the way to go. At this rate Mundy will not have far fewer B-29s for strategic bombing when he finally gets in range.

Looks like none of the B-29 raids had escorting fighters and just relied on sweeps which don't always proceed the bombers. A painful relearning that the Bomber doesn't always make it through.

If there are 400 fighters in base "A", there has to be some other, less well protected, "still good" target for the heavies... and it is 1944 so recon assets are no longer scarce/ unavailable

He keeps attacking my India outpost.. Most of his shipping is in the Pacific (so it seems) and he is not able to take Calcutta, at least not while I supply it. He is playing into my hands ..... I suffer some shipping losses with the supply runs every now and then but it is perfectly acceptable considering the time (Dec. 1944) and air power he allocated to the area

Yup, he's fixated on attacking a target with no strategic significance. Taking Calcutta isn't going to help him win the war. And putting so much effort into it is detracting from places he could be. This game is likely going to come down to the Soviets entering the war as I don't think the western Allies are going to achieve anything of strategic significance in the next 9 months.

Wow. Looking at the damaged bomber numbers and the very low air base hit rates (which means they were hit before the bomb run), I suspect he lost upwards of 50% of those damaged bombers. At least for me, when I have those types of combat reports, my actual bomber lost count is a lot higher ...

So, you may have just decimated his 4E bomber fleet ... good job!!!

In my game the B-29s sweep for the stupid fighters.

According to tracker he lost 123 B29s and 39 B24s on a single day..

Total 4 engine bomber losses for the US alone are 1350+ (including 6 B29-25 not on the attached tracker overview)

Researching the KI-94 II (4% per day currently, hoping to expand to 8%). Also investing in Jets now, but those will come slowly... The A7M2 is nearly ready for mass production (next month)

What is the accuracy for each, since the P-47 has all wing mounted weapons it usually gets a lower rating then center line mounted weapons.

Everything is forward (8xF-mounted) on these aircraft (thats wing mounted)... The base accuracy of the 30mm is terrible...

those 30mm guns should be good against heavy bombers this is why they were used
I don't know if the game models it

Situation at Ponape is stable.. I'll try to bring in some reinforcements and supply (currently standing at 14k) by APD / fast transport.. That would combine the 12th with its sister unit and engineers/artillery into a division... Even if I some of the APDs get sunk I'll still be able to combine... And if this works it is another way to get reinforcements to important places (a way to deploy my strategic reserve infantry)

Ground combat at Ponape (119,113)

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 14772 troops, 238 guns, 79 vehicles, Assault Value = 560

Defending force 11782 troops, 97 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 320

Japanese ground losses:
39 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Assaulting units:
6th Marine Division
2nd Arm Amphib Battalion
111th(Sep) Infantry Regiment
706th Tank Battalion
4th Field Artillery Battalion
249th Field Artillery Battalion
6th Pioneer Battalion

Defending units:
12th Garrison Unit
47th Ind.Mixed Brigade
Ponape Naval Fortress
33rd Field Const Co
3rd Base Force

On the India front I'll extract the 21st division by air (suspending resupply by air until that is done).. It will reduce supply usage and gives me something to defend Burma with.... 90 Helen transports should be able to get it done fairly quickly.. Big Navy transport planes stand by to extract guns..

Once the extraction is complete I'll have 5500 AV divided over three bases so no taking it for Mundy.... In fact, I might extract one or two more divisions....

Around 60 land based torpedo bombers and 30 dive bombers (D4Y4) attack cruisers near Calcutta... 40 are lost for no hits, all to FLAK.. Time to try a new toy at high altitude.. If the ships are inbound to bombard they should be in range next turn...

Crushing those CVEs has renewed your interest in the AAR! Curious to see how Ponape turns out.

Well, Ponape is fairly remote and hard for him to cover. He bombarded it and probably will try again later.. This turn he brought in fresh supplies (noteworthy: lightly escorted) but the run got disturbed by my FT TF..

Economy... I've got around 380 days of fuel and 115 days of resources as a strategic reserve in Japan itself.... Oil is nearly gone... Supply and HI production is still at full steam ahead....

The Takanis Bay seems to have sunk... A small destroyer group tangles with the remaining CVEs (2 escorted by three DE/DDs) but the torpedoes do not connect (fired from 10k yards)...

5k Supply delivered to Ponape by FT...

Rest of the turn uneventfull..

Wow, is Mundy ever fixated on Calcutta.

This is turning out to be both a tactical and strategic victory for Japan. It seems a tragic waste using B-29's in a tactical role.

It's Mundy's Stalingrad for his air force.

Those B-29s could even be helping in the Pacific hitting far away air bases unexpectedly. But instead they are being used in short range air base attacks against heavy CAP against a target of little strategic value. It is a waste.
