Even should you suffer a relative defeat, I think you'll manage, to pack a punch. Your superior damage control should see you through and, hopefully, you will sink 1-2 CVs. Each is a blow to Japan. You can replace your losses. Let's hope you break through his CAP with the fighter pilots he's lost.

However, I, too, and wondering why you seek this out. Your landings have happened and there is little risk of a CV strike stopping their success.

It is really eagerness to fight after a year of doing very little in the Pacific. Maybe this will be my doom? or a hard lesson in restraint. But I think the chance of a slugfest that will diminish the KB's long term value is worth the risk. I hope that the kind of firepower I am presenting here will guarantee heavy losses for both sides and this is something that is worth a try

Why not wait for him to come? I don't think he was coming or better to say he was going to come on his own time line. Likely as a surprise attack in the worst possible moment.

We will see how this ends. Considering the ranges and lack of DL we might end without a fight

I'm sure most every Allied player in late '42 or early '43, myself included, can relate!!!

All the best!!!

Probably not the best location for a CV duel since your out of LBA range. Its a roll of the dice....do you feel lucky?
Can you range some P-38s for additional CAP? How about Heavies on Naval strike - they won't hit anything, but could attrit CAP..

But the biggest question - why risk a fight now with no clear advantage? You may surprise him - true! But alternatively, why not wait till he comes within range of your LBA - I've got to assume he's moving this way to hit you somewhere...

Also, question - surprised you haven't developed Coen or Portland Roads?

In any case, good hunting!!!

Thanks!!
I have only one P-38 squadron and no heavy bombers at all in the Pacific... actually some has just recently started the long journey from India, but will arrive in the next month or two
And it is too far away for P-38's, I was hoping to have Kirakira's airfield operating by now, a nice level 3(5), but Japan managed to defeat the 1st assault.

As per Coen and Portland roads, because the focus was India up to a few months ago, then the south west pacific, plus I am sure he would have tried to interdict from Port Moresby... but I guess I missed to see its potential

You might want to sail your most valuable ships (APs and AKs that can convert to APA/AKA) but leave the rest in place to split a KB attack. This has been the downfall of many an IJN player since they cannot control which target the AI allocates the strikes to.

I have two cruiser TF bombing Rossel island, that will hopefully split the KB strike pack

otherwise, the xAPs are too far away. The APs with maybe one or two ship exceptions are already on their way home

good luck, you might have the element of surprise as you moved towards him and he would most likely expect you to stay closer to the invasion locations. He might be planning a maximum distance strike and you move inside his range fan. Now the classic who sites whom first and gets off the best coordinated strike.

January 10th 1943 will be remembered as Salamina, Lepanto, Trafalgar or Tsushima are. A mighty fleet, the undefeated champion of Japanese imperialism, was nearly completely annihilated is what future generations will remember as "The Battle of the Coral Sea". In this, the turning point of the war, the mighty Combined Fleet of the Japanese Empire was defeated near Munda by a superbly lead US Navy.

Allied losses on pilots and airframes were heavy, but other than some small coastal transports& patrol craft destroyed, no major ships were lost. And all damaged ships look in reasonable condition for the journey to Australian shipyards.

KB Damage Assessment:
Sunk or sinking:
CVs Kaga, Hiyo and Zuikaku, CVL Ryujo

Heavy damage:
CVs Hiryu, Akagi,

Moderate damage:
CV Shokaku

Not yet at risk
CV Junyo was torpedoed near Singapore some days ago, should leave the repair yard in a month or so
CV Soryu was not damaged

Details to follow

Naval engagements:
The turn started with the standard amphibious unloading over Kirakira and Rennel islands:

This was followed by a one sided naval engagement on Russel island; a bombarding cruiser TF found a small Japanese TF of 2 DDs and 1 APD; 2 ships sunk, 1 heavy damaged

Then, naval bombardments on Lunga and Russell island

Finally, CM Okinoshima was torpedoed by SS-42, also near Russell

AM Phase:
There was a heavy cloud over the Allied carriers, thereby no Allied aircraft were launched from carriers and no enemy strikes aimed to CVs.

Instead, Japan launched several small strikes against the very irrelevant amphibious task force that finished unloading at Rennell island. Notice there was also bad weather over Rennell which is probably why the focus was on the small TF leaving.

That said, LBAs launched against Rennell, and they found BB South Dakota, hitting it with the weakest torpedo I have ever seen: system 7, flood 3(0), engine 1(0)

Afternoon Phase - Japanese strikes

Japan launches a heavy strike, which is intercepted by a strong CAP of almost 160 Wildcats.
Fighters did a good job taking down around 30 bombers before they reached the fleet.
I thinks the significant high number of potential targets helped, as they were busy spreading their attacks over 6 carriers, 4 escort carriers, 3 battleships and 4 AA cruisers.

Damage was really light
Saratoga, Yorktown, Copahee and Warspite will withdraw to Australia. Although they are still in shape for fighting, there is no need to risk them.

There were three additional Japanese strikes, but against the freighters at Kirakira and Rennel. They were intercepted by P-40s and suffered losses. In exchange they sank some small, and at this point irrevelevant xAPs/ xAKs.

That will really change the war.

I will go so far as to say, I don't think the KB should be risked in 1943 while she still has A6M2 on board.

Jorge, how many of your non carriers had air search radars?

20 minute warning, 23 minutes to scramble all fighters to position.

What did the Allied air strike look like with regard to warning time?

That will really change the war.

Might end this PBEM game... I need to discuss what is next.

If we continue, the focus becomes the central pacific. Because as long as I am not invading atolls, I can invade with xAPs if I wish

EDIT: I will answer your question soon, I think all had radar, I mean, all ships were at their best upgrade

Afternoon Phase - Allied Strikes

The main Allied strike come very close after the Japanese's
It was a strong pack, and I would say without a doubt, a very successful one.
It was followed by 3 uncoordinated small strikes that only managed to bring pilot casualties. It also confirmed that Zuikaku was on a very bad shape: heavy smoke and dead on the water

And these are the (quite horrendous) air losses.
I need to figure out which squadrons will remain for tomorrow's battle. With Yorktown, Saratoga and Copahee withdrawing, but fully operational, I can do some reshuffling of squadrons to guarantee a good strike pack for tomorrow.

and there is also the 3 Sangamons at Kirakira eager for combat

I hope the game doesn't end; Japan can still put up a fight albeit a different kind of fight. Some Japanese carrier are really tough, and he might be able to salvage quite a few ships.

You really ambushed him good.

I wonder if he was hoping to have 30 or so Tojo's flying lrCAP too? If so that never works...

Looks like Japan had a nice TF composition, but simply a weak CAP with all those A6M2. He might have had a weak CAP if there are no Cruisers present. Good warning time.

Pity, the KB should have been on the other side of the Solomons. No flanking TF protecting the KB...and I wonder where are the Iboats dedicated to the KB?

That will really change the war.

I will go so far as to say, I don't think the KB should be risked in 1943 while she still has A6M2 on board.

Jorge, how many of your non carriers had air search radars?

20 minute warning, 23 minutes to scramble all fighters to position.

What did the Allied air strike look like with regard to warning time?

How many have air search radar:
of the 45 ships in that hex (6 CVs, 4 CVEs, 3 BBs, 4 CLAAs, 28 DDs) all, except CVE Long Island, have air search radar.
I had one big 20 ship TF under Halsey (6 CVs, 2 BBs, 2 CLAAs, 10 DDs)
another 21 ship TF under Spruance (4 CVEs, 1 BB, 2 CLAAs, 14 DDs)
and two ASW TF following (each with 2 DDs), one following Halsey, one following Spruance

Warning time
earliest: in 7 minutes, most in the 17 to 20 min timeframe. I noticed a relatively mild CAP over the KB. I will like to run the replay again to confirm

For my emails with Steve; he thought there were no carriers, only CVEs. So he "warped" full speed to hit the beach head, also hoping to eliminate the helpless CVEs. Key point is that we both have good naval search here, and we both failed to spot the other's fleets. You can see from a few posts before that other than a submarine attack, I completely failed to spot the KB. I will give a boatload of whiskey to that skipper, as I would had thought he left to Timor because I would had trusted my good nav search. And of course, the dynamics of today's battle would had been very different. I might had moved back outside the range of the carrier battle, or even worst, split the TFs.

He also said that my assumption of the KB near Port Moresby at the end of last turn was wrong. This would had been the case if he was at "mission speed", but he set full speed and KB was already near Woodlark island.

I saw some land based fighters intercepting one of the unescorted, uncoordinated strikes. it won't ever be as good as a full 100% 0 range CAP IMO.

And yes, the game changes completely. For once, I will soon form a massive supply, fuel, engineers, base force, etc for Darwin... then it will grow it to level 9 and from then on Japan can say goodbye to the DEI

As per the Japanese carrier toughness... I will let Halsey and friends, including recently arrived Sangamons, to test the concept tomorrow
My guess, is that Soryu and Shokaku will survive, everybody else will end as a coral reef.

You planned that battle perfectly and your positioning of your own carriers really caught the enemy off balance. Very well done!

You might want to sail your most valuable ships (APs and AKs that can convert to APA/AKA) but leave the rest in place to split a KB attack. This has been the downfall of many an IJN player since they cannot control which target the AI allocates the strikes to.

Told ya so! Assuming your CAP was tied up with the strike portion that DID go for your CVs, those extra TBs that went for the Amphib TFs could have put a lot of torps into your CVs.

Not so much self-congratulations as "It's nice being right for a change."

Yes, you certainly were right; the CAP over invasions killed some Judys AND more important, it split the strike pack

Come now, would the Imperial Japanese forces have surrendered after this! He must fight on! Though, having never progressed this far in the war I do not know what this does to the morale of your opponent.

BUT

It puts him in no worse a spot really than the Allied player is in during the first part of the game--assuming he has some of his carrier and surface fleet left. And as someone who has only played this early part of the war as the Allies, the game is most certainly still fun!

In fact, in many ways it is really a lot of fun trying to wage a guerrilla war at sea trying to slow down the juggernaut.

In other words, Jorge, in our game, don't expect the Allies to ever give in! Here is the new USS Houston, and if necessary there will be another, and still another...

The battle is still in development, but I am confident that tomorrow whatever remains of the KB will be eliminated.

Only exception could be Soryu and Chitose, he will most likely run them at full speed towards Rabaul.
If this happens, then KB will become, at most, a raiding force

We will see, after that, and assuming the game will continue, I need to reformulate strategy as "short leapfrogs" are no longer required.
That said I have several LCUs very close to 100% prep, and it would be a waste to put those back to 20s.
But once these "close" objectives are achieved, I will start preparing for much deeper operations

Congrats on the decisive victory now you are going for the jugular. Mutiple targets for him and one target for you worked out like a charm.

Second day results were inconclusive

I can be certain that his most damaged ships went to Munda, there the carriers hit again CVs Akagi and Zuikaku; in two strikes Zuikaku was hit by a torpedo in the 1st. And on the second it was gone, instead Akagi was hit by 6 bombs. I certain they are gone.

His main force went to Buin, there is where I found the strongest CAP. I have no idea what is there as the relatively weak strike pack sent from Chenango, Suwannee and Sangamon failed to penetrate it. Instead it got mauled heavily. Tomorrow I have naval bombardment, recon and bombers on port strike all set to find out!

Then, the battleships: he cleverly move his battleships as bait, knowing torpedoes were spent. this of course to attract the main strike pack... which he did... BB Nagato is on fire, but all bombs hit the armor deck.

Finally, CM Okinashima was also found and likely went down

Updated enemy carrier losses assessment:
Sunk:
CVs Kaga, Akagi, Zuikaku,
Kaga was dead at sea on day 1, but not spotted on day 2
Zuikaku attacked on day 2 AM phase hit by a torpedo, heavy fires/ damage, dead in the water. Not there on PM phase
Akagi got 6 more bombs on day 2; dead at sea afterwards

Heavy Damage:
CVs Hiyo, CVL Ryujo
No update on any of these ships from day 2, they are likely at Buna.
Ryujo might be lost already, as it is the least durable and it had an ammo explosion
Hiyo was at at heavy fire/ heavy damage status last turn. It had a fuel explosion

Moderate Damage:
CV Shokaku, Hiryu
Hiryu was hit by a torpedo and 2 bombs
Shokaku by 2 bombs, they both are either at Buna or left already

Undamaged:
CV Soryu
Soryu was not damaged... likely near Truk by now

Not present at this battle:
CVL Shoho and CVE Taiyo sunk in the Indian sea a long time ago.
CV Junyo was torpedoed near Singapore some days ago, should leave the repair yard in a month or so

CVLs Zuiho, Ryuho, status unknown
CVEs Hosho, Unyo, Chuyo, status unknown

Knowing that Buin was the hidden spot of the damaged carriers, I decided to send the SCTFs to "inspect" that port. Also, remember that Buin is a level 1 port, which means it doesn't provide protection to anchored ships.

So I set 3 battleship and one cruiser TFs to naval bombard it. I even made the gamble of sending the carrier escorts. I guess this is what he was expecting, because he also decided to send many battleship and cruiser TFs. Which meant nothing other than one of the biggest slugfest brawl I have ever seen.

Night Phase:
Night battles started with BB South Dakota finding a lone carrier, CV Hiryu, escorted by destroyers. The screen was so well executed that it managed to escape with minor losses (one destroyer likely sunk).

Then the first fist fight: The battle of the carrier escorts
BBs North Carolina/ Indiana tag teamed against the evil BBs Kirishima and Hiei. And the good guys won this fight; Kirishima went down. North Carolina got hit five times.

Then the second fight: Experience vs Youth
This time ancient Yamashiro taught a lesson to newcomer punks North Carolina and Indiana, As unbelievable as this might sound, Yamashiro, with only E Otori as escort, managed to put 8 shells into Indiana and one into North Carolina, the later ending on fire/ heavy damage. Yamashiro in the other hand ended receiving only 5 hits, which put it on fire.

Third fight: David vs Goliath
Light cruiser Tenryu found South Dakota, who once again failed to perform according to (diminishing) expectations I had on him; after a short gun exchange, both decided this was enough.

Then night bombings:
BB Washington and cruiser TF composed of Nashville, Honolulu and St Louis bombed Buin, destroying many fighter planes.

Day Phase

The day started with BB Washington finding CV Hiryu... and Washington did his job.. South Dakota, this is a message to you
Moreover, according to my calculations, this was the only place were CV Hiyo and CVL Ryujo... as they were too damaged to run away... which means they most likely sank.

Afterwards, 3 battles, with Nashville, St Louis and Honolulu running the gauntlet against BB Hiei TF, then Tenryu and finally against a 6 cruiser strong, fresh TF. No ship was sunk (yet) but Nashville and Honolulu left in a poor state.

Then the killing continued;

AM Phase
The morning starts with KB pilots launching over my dispersed fleet, and yes, I said KB pilots, most survived and re-based to some of the multiple airfields available in the Solomons. They managed to hit DD Gwin and then harassed CLs Honolulu and Nashville. And although they failed to score any hit, this was too much for them; both ended as coral reefs

Then Allies turn. CAs Kako, Mogami and CL Yubari recieved a bomb each. This is surprisingly low for the more than 70 dive bombers and more than 20 torpedo bombers launched.
