How old is Toe-rag's mum? Were the flags horizontal or did she have to orient them vertically?

*************January 17, 1941(e)**********

Samarinda has fallen. Balikpapan appears to be the next target. A foolish staff officer sent some B-17's to Balikpapan..now there are 7-8 disabled birds.
We lost track of the LYB carriers. I think Soryu and Hiryu transited the Java/Sumatra gap and are headed back for Bondo and plumbing repairs.

Australia forces at Rabaul hold another day. The two USN carriers are now South of New and Improved Britain having declined to pursue the retreating IJN toward Truk.

round combat at Rabaul (106,125)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 3784 troops, 38 guns, 4 vehicles, Assault Value = 117

Defending force 2627 troops, 17 guns, 175 vehicles, Assault Value = 28

Japanese adjusted assault: 43

Allied adjusted defense: 45

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 0)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), disruption(-), preparation(-), fatigue(-)
morale(-), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
49 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Allied ground losses:
47 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 4 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Assaulting units:
Maizuru 1st SNLF
Maizuru 2nd SNLF

Defending units:

PI: Still, no landing on Luzon or Mindanao. The last remaining damaged subs have put out to sea. Quite a few ships got out to the east North of Palau. Sending some supplies westward from Midway.

**********December 19, 1941(e)*********

We find the KB. They headed south along the "west" coast of Sumatra. Well-intentioned dyke diggers launch wave after wave of bombers from Batavia. It's pathetic.
The KB sinks a couple of 3 pt Dutch tankers trying to get out of Sumatra. Quite a waste of Japanese fuel if you ask me. Not only that, as we have all 6 IJN CV's marked in the last 2 days, the USN carriers can make trouble in the South Pacific.

The 2 SNLF units at Rabaul have stopped attacking. We roughed them up with carrier bombers again. The two unrestricted Aus Bn from Sydney are on there way to destroy them

Rhetorical question:

What happens if a Japanese home island base is captured and then recaptured by Japan? Are the industry, oil and refineries destroyed?

Not necessarily *destroyed*, but likely a number would be destroyed *or* damaged. Both outcomes provide Victory Points. Consult the manual for the breakdown.

There are quite a few HI bases with minimal or no CD guns or organic infantry defense at war's beginning. Check Hokkaido especially.

Thinking (rhetorically, of course) of a little sabotage run, Cap'n?

Well, rhetorically speaking, if their carriers are looking for seashells in the Indian Ocean the Allies need not sit on their rhetorical thumbs.

Yes, it's occurred to me that their carriers are well out of position. Got somewhere you'd like to bomb?

Great idea! There's a dame named Rita you should meet. She's kinda got big shoulders but has a nice personality. Well, that's what I heard.

Like on Bugis Street, you mean? No, but her nose is pretty substantial. Face is thin, sort of like Seabiscuit.

**********December 20, 1941(e)***********

It looked like the KB might transit the Java/Sumatra gap so we send out an all volunteer crew on a Dutch minelayer tragically misnamed after a celebrated volcanic explosion. The minefield draws a bust, and the poor minesweeper is finished off by the carrier bombers but the Dutch subs are ordered to concentrate at the Eastern exit of the strait.

Japanese Ships
CV Kaga, Torpedo hits 1

New and Improved Britain: The LYB's attack again at Rabaul but only after they get pounded with 8 inch guns from a USN crusier. They grow weaker, managing only a 1:2

Allied ground losses:

HMAS Australia will bombard tomorrow. The USN carriers retreat to get a drink and to add uncertainty. Maybe JJ will send another transport convoy to Rabaul and then we can pounce again.

Manado: KNIL holds another day. Pontianak falls and Studebaker not looking so good either.

JJ captures the little island with the unpronounceable name South of Singers.

Very heavy forces ashore at Balikpapan. Fortunately, we got all but one B-17 out.

This is mildy diverting. Poor old Thracian, named after an obscure tribe who lived West of the Bosporus and whose chief accomplishment seems to be that they were perpetually getting their asses kicked, is just trying to make Midway, having "escaped" from Hong Kong.

Revenge of the Thracians! That is a BIG convoy! Maybe headed to Rabaul? Hard to tell.

Here is a Thracian. he seems to be oriented toward the West so he is probably about to get his ass kicked by the Greeks or the Celts.
I'm going to got out on a limb and predict the women weren't very attractive either.

JJ has not attacked Wake yet. We have an AK waiting to take out the F4F's and some President AP's about 3 days out coming to take out the Marines.

We also killed 2 IJN subs poking around Palmyra and Midway after they hit mines.
