Chris Carlson analysis of new Chinese shipyard.
Suspected to be a nuclear submarine shipyard, in the analysis is more probably a merchant ship module mounting installation:

Even if the railway could support the weight of a completed submarine, there are several “roadblocks” at the western terminus that prevent the transfer of any large vessel into the dry dock. Google Earth imagery shows the rail lines end at a massive dry dock wall. This wall is about six meters wide and at least one meter tall—there is no way to move a large, very heavy vessel over this wall. Furthermore, there are no rail lines in the shallow slipway. This indicates that there is no way to directly transfer objects to the slipway by rail. -

The missing rails between the 6m gap has rumored been built by the end of June, and the facility construction doesn't seems completed entirely.

Some nice photos of Exercise Saxon Warrior off the coast of Scotland:

Note: Unfortunately the Daily Mail mislabelled the Norwegian warship: HNoMS Helge Ingstad. Apologies to our Scandinavian ally.

Jane's take on the DF-31AG ICBM

http://www.janes.com/article/72971/df-31ag-icbm-can-carry-multiple-warheads-claims-china-s-state-media

quote:

Key Points

-Chinese media have suggested that China's DF-31AG ICBM could be armed with MIRV warheads

-The DF-31AG uses a 16-wheel road-capable TEL, widening its deployment options and thus increasing its survivability

While official Chinese sources have said almost nothing about the capabilities of the recently identified DF-31AG intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), Chinese state media have in recent days offered indications that it might be armed with multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle (MIRV) warheads.

An aft image of the DF-31AG ICBM shows the use of a prominent pad at the base of the cold-launch missile tube, also used by the new DF-26 intermediate-range ballistic missile. (Via Meyet.com)

Although images of this missile first appeared on Chinese webpages in mid-2013, it was not until its mid-July appearance in model form at a new exhibit at Beijing’s Military Museum of the Chinese People’s Revolution that a new variant of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) DF-31A was identified as the ‘DF-31AG’.

Then, on 30 July, 16 DF-31AGs appeared in a major military parade marking the 90th Anniversary of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Its appearance in such a parade would indicate that the DF-31AG has entered service with the PLA Rocket Forces.

Previously this ICBM was identified as the ‘DF-31B’ by US government sources in a 2 October 2015 article in the Washington Free Beacon , which also reported that the DF-31B had been tested on 25 September 2015.

Interesting piece on "Hyperwar" :

https://www.fifthdomain.com/dod/2017/08/07/emerging-hyperwar-signals-ai-fueled-machine-waged-future-of-conflict/?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=EBB%208.10.17&utm_term=Editorial%20-%20Early%20Bird%20Brief

"Generals and military theorists have sought to characterize the nature of war for millennia, and for long periods of time, warfare doesn’t dramatically change. But, occasionally, new methods for conducting war cause a fundamental reconsideration of its very nature and implications. Allen and Husain, in “On Hyperwar,” identify cavalry, the rifled musket and Blitzkrieg as three historical examples.
The advent of hyperwar signals the next “fundamentally transformative change” in warfare. The term hyperwar has been used historically with different denotations, which Allen and Husain trace, but the authors have redefined and adopted the term to describe this “AI-fueled, machine-waged conflict" "where human decision making is almost entirely absent from the observe-orient-decide-act (OODA) loop

In response to North Korea's statement that it might fire missiles over Japan towards Guam, the Japanese Government has started to look at the possibility of deploying Patriot interceptors to its western regions. The batteries could be deployed in the regions mentioned in the North Korean statement.

The USAF oa-x light attack aircraft experiment is now conducting a fly-off at Holloman AFB here in New Mexico.

The contenders are the A-29 Super Tucano, the AT-6 Wolverine, the AT-802L Longsword and, the only jet, the Scorpion.

Light Attack Aircraft Flyoff

USAF is being pretty coy about this being anything other then an experiment to evaluate the capabilities of current off-the-shelf light aircraft. Textron has a lot riding on the Scorpion as they have potential international buyers awaiting the result of this fly-off.

A Chinese state-run newspaper (the Global Times) has stated that if North Korea launches missiles that threaten U.S. soil first and the U.S. retaliates, China would remain neutral. However, it also stated that if the U.S. and South Korea carry out strikes to overthrow the North Korean regime, China would try to prevent them from doing so.

It sounds like China is very confident that NK still won't leave a mark on US soil no matter how dangerous and idiotic the bluff is. The 'neutral' is more like 'ignoring' instead of 'breaking the blood-alliance', because NK is still the only buffer country against the west.

A Russian senator has said that Russia has put its eastern air defences on high alert to protect its territory. He said that Russia would shoot down a North Korean missile launched with erroneous coordinates as “the likelihood of an error ...is high enough.”

Henri K. on the new modified 032 Qing-class SSB and its prospective testing of the JL-3 SLBM.

Interestingly, the new modified Qing-class also has a raised platform infront of its sail (2). This area was previously associated with testing the cruise/anti-ship missile VLS of the 093B SSGN.
So, this indicates that we can expect a longer and larger sub-launched VLS missile system of some sort for the next submarine class.

The NKMC continues.

As for the "Intervene if US-SK attacks NK", many medias had quoted and rephrased it as "attack US-SK if they attack NK first". Which is easily draw lots of public outcrys and stirring more Sinophobic attitude:

https://uk.news.yahoo.com/china-join-forces-north-korea-145009641.html

-------------

I might be frustrated when people cannot tell the difference between J-11 and Su-27 because of the exact appearance, but it's okay, most of them including myself can't actually tell at all, aside from original countries. So, a blogger wrote an idiot guide to definite their differences:

Same news as in the DB3k thread, but this times reported by Jane's.

quote:

Images indicate possible precision-guided version of China's KD-20 LACM

Key Points
-China may have developed a new optically guided version of the KD-20 land attack cruise missile
-Such a weapon would allow aircraft like the H-6K bomber to conduct attacks from greater stand-off ranges

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/08/12/china-uses-underwater-drones-in-south-china-sea.html

"The ability of UUVs to detect and hunt submarines, thereby rendering oceans transparent, potentially changes the way of warfare," Sylvia Mishra, junior fellow at New Delhi-based think tank Observer Research Foundation, said in a note earlier this month. "It is precisely why Beijing has been investing in a burgeoning underwater drones industry, which enjoys considerable national-level funding and support.
UUVs may be presently used for scientific research, but they could be upgraded for underwater combat, patrol, mine-sweeping and submarine detection operations, Mishra continued. "It is likely that the People's Liberation Army will utilize UUVs for military purposes."

The photo surfaced 2 days ago, so it's recent. If you didn't follow the Pentagon in all it's wisdom changed the focus from Unmanned Carrier-Launched Airborne Surveillance and Strike (UCLASS) program into Carrier-Based Aerial-Refueling System (CBARS).
That's first photo of the result. The flights were scheduled for 2017. There are 4 competing designs with the winner to be chosen in 2018.

I called it joke of the day for the simple reason that it looks like this: You invest tons of money to design UCLASS that is stealth (ISR+strike), but then the Pentagon say nah, let's focus on CBARS instead. So you end up with expensive stealth UAV that isn't even stealth with those drop tanks and use it as tanker. Because ... why not :)

So you are saying it's not a proper unmanned tanker, but an ex-UCAV loaded with buddy pods?

I don't doubt they can't do this, KQ-X experiment is indeed a tanker from the very existence, but not a carrier borne:

"US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis and his Vietnamese counterpart Ngo Xuan Lich agreed to allow a US aircraft carrier to visit Vietnam next year – for the first time since the Vietnam war ended in 1975. The agreement also includes expanded cooperation between their two navies and intelligence sharing."

First I heard of the visit:
