Yesterday Lowpe sent the replay of the latest turn, March 29. I don't have the turn file yet so info is incomplete. He has construction going on and apparently fires to put out there too!

A lot of sub contacts to start the turn. So many, but his night search makes most of them escort initiated. Only a few fire shots, and those all at DDs.

Unfortunately O20 hit a mine at Singkawang in spite of orders not to go there.

Light cruisers have a light bombardment at Palembang, but importantly do hit infantry squads for the first time here. Nice!

The hex below is where it looks like the mini-KB ended up.

I could. A good idea again. I've tried before as well, but it is at 17 hexes requiring reduced load range. Right now I do want to get nearby known threats taken care of and then hopefully I can look at other long range ideas.

Miri and Brunei are also in range, and from several bases on Java I can hit Balikpapan still. From Clark Field Hong Kong is only 15 hexes as well. His recon is not consistent at Clark so I could slip them in there for a strike or two.

The mini-KB did attempt a strike which flew in to Palembang without escort and hit the CAP. Reports show 17 Kates destroyed. A second wave came and somehow missed the CAP, got to a few AMc and sank them ruthlessly. Got to be careful since there is a lot of good combat and transport shipping around. Tomorrow all bases with ships will hunker down and fly 1 hex supporting CAP at layered levels.

After this in the day the air strikes were again very effective at Palembang even though weather still plays up a bit. A total of 30 more hits to the oil!! Now that I've seen the turn file I can say this is getting to the point where I'm nearly finished with the campaign. I'd like to get it to 100-150 oil left, with Djambi at 0, and then go for the base itself.

Overall we've hit Magwe and destroyed about 100 oil points there, taken off another 100 between Balikpapan and Samarinda, hit Boela for minus 20, and destroyed the oil at Sakhalin for another minus 30, plus a few odd here and there. By my count (without tracker) I think the SRA and Burma have about 2,700 oil production points. So if I count up those damaged already plus the goal for Palembang, that would be about 1350, or almost exactly half, of the SRA oil production wiped out in the first 4 months of the war!!

Of course I won't stop there, and Magwe, Miri/Brunei, Balikpapan/Samarinda (plus Soerabaja and Medan/Benkalis if and when they're captured) will still be in range of the 4Es.

Elsewhere the 4Es finally get the big hit o the damaged Pontiniak fields we were hoping for, with another ~30 Japanese planes destroyed, plus one more 500lb hit on the Myoko (only deck armor again, non-penetrating). I'll rest these beasts up tomorrow and not risk getting them embroiled in a fight with the KB CAP.

Out at Sabang the Dorniers flew and hit another APD, likely sinking her. Nice!

Up North in Redville the Soviets land some good shots on the retreating 24th A/division. Over all attacks the numbers accumulate a bit. This unit will be in trouble tomorrow when tanks arrive to give it another push.

This shows where the IJN CVs ended up after the turn. Quite ominous, but I've decided to stay put, disband all but small ship TFs (PTs, MTBs, AMc and ML) and set CAP heavily over all port bases. Subs will continue the hunt. It's pretty risky putting these ships out here in the middle of our search arcs and where a lot of subs are known to be spotted regularly, so I wonder what's he's up to. A lot of strike planes, so maybe more than I thought originally. At least 3-4 CVs or 2 CV plus a lot of CVLs.

As shown here Formidable is on her way to rienforce the RN. She'll divert out a bit to avoid any rushing strikes in by the IJN.

At Oosthaven about 8 ground units are being unloaded, so extra CAP is placed there, but no surface forces. A trip through Merak might not turn out well for a raiding TF as there are lots of mines, MTBs and CD guns. They'd traverse the hex two times if they went and that wouldn't look good for them I think.

This report claims the oil at Palembang is down to 469 now!!! Amazing!

Since several nearby fields are now level 4 our MBs are flying with full loads ands the hits may begin to really add up in the next week. We're aiming to take it to under 100 before trying to take the base.

The 30th was a bit anti-climactic as the mini-KB retreated through the horde of subs around Singkawang and there were no hits.

In spite of increased search and some groups on naval strike set to go on Ceylon, the Abukuma and escorts again raid deep into the IO. This time they nail a five ship TF on it's way back to Cochin. All ships are destroyed. I've added more search, more strike planes and hope to get something back here since the Japanese have a long way to travel home. At least no troops or other cargo lost.

Although I turned off all 2E and most 1E aiming at Palembang, the Vincents escaped my attention and still flew, getting 1 more hit in on the oil!

The small garrison at Manado again foils the Japanese there. With one day left on the invasion bonus these kinds of stalemates will begin to be a mores serious problem.

At Palembang he's still increasing troop slightly by flying some in. In spite of a 1 hex LR CAP I can't hit the transports, but hey, I've got another 800 AV on the way, so it shouldn't matter. I'll keep bombarding by sea, and once the oil is wrecked sufficiently, all of these 2E will turn on the ground troops. His AA has certainly weakened here with continuous pounding, so I've lowered the altitude as well to 8k.

Up North more bombing of Arshaan, Sunwu and Heiho. Tanks escape the stalemate hex and will move to Sunwu. I'l have about a 5:1 AV advantage there in a few days, and will wait to strike until all is in place.

The 24th A/division is being mercilessly pounded by air, and will be attacked by tanks tomorrow. There is a chance it'll surrender, leaving the IJA with an incomplete division.

Well I can't speak of rate other side, but we've got about 70k supplies now on Sumatra, and there are another 50k casing in plus more on the way in the next two weeks. I've also topped up Java which doesn't have much industry without refineries making supplies in DBB.

Singers just got popup and is steady at 55k. I'll have to continue this every couple of weeks so getting Palembang and hopefully taking the island bases nearby would really make the transit easier. Next infusion I should bring in 25k at least. I just have to watch it now that the KB is around. For 14 knot ships it is a 3 day journey along the less vulnerable coastline.

Elsewhere Beans and Bullets are flush. The Aleutians are fully stocked, the Soviets have a nice reserve, and India ia overflowing.

A little accounting.

Here is a map of the damaged oil centres of the SRA and Burma, either those starting off damaged or subsequently hit by air and naval strikes. Some seem to be repairing fairly quickly, like Balikpapan. Others are the same as they were after the last strikes.

At present in the bases owned by the Japanese there are around 888 damaged oil well points, with about 1116 producing. These include Palembang and Djambi though, which are under siege and threat from constant air strikes to wipe out most if not all remaining oil. If we don't count these bases, the Japanese are only producing around 605 oil points a turn from this area with another 1399 destroyed or unavailable, and ~480 yet to be taken. Not good for Lowpe's reserves.

I just looked on the Japanese side of my other Scenario 1 game, and it looks like there I've got 2880 oil centres producing. I know Magwe has been destroyed so add 300 to that.

So I'm guessing I can get over half of the possible IJ oil production centres damaged. I remember when this happened to my economy in the Wild Sheep Chase game with Jocke in the late game, and it really didn't take long to get through the reserves once he flow started to be reduced.

I've got a lot more thinking to do about what this will do to the Japanese economy. I need to research to find out the starting reserves, HI use and typical ship usage/day in the beginning then a lot of the fleet is in action. I then need to think about what this will mean for the future, and whether it will affect R & D, supply, and his ability to fight on land, int he air and in the oceans. Let me know if you have any thoughts of figures on this stuff.

Status: offline 		Only thought I had was that any refuelling he does from the areas with captured oil + refinery should not be counted against his home reserve usage. What matters is what reaches Japan, not what gets used up from other gas (petrol, to you!) stations.

So the hard part of the equation is how much hauling capacity does he have and how much is it actually being used to haul fuel/oil back to Japan? Some of the haulers will be servicing far flung bases rather than feeding industry.

Somebody dropped a few gifts near Singers on a shallow hex. DD Patterson cleared two while moving by in the night, and I’ll send in the AMs to take care of the rest.

The USN gets a good bombardment at Palembang again. Nice to note n the reports that we're hitting 4th C/division. His AV is still going up and troops still flying in somehow, in spite of the LR CAP from 1 hex at multiple altitude bands. He has a penchant for going extra high and I wonder how this works with transport. Either way, I'll bomb the s*** out of these troops soon once the oil is gone.

Speaking of the bombing, the strikes had huge impact today. In total 78 oil points damaged at Palembang and another 24 hit at Djambi.

On the downside, a large group of A6M2 from the CVs swept and crushed some LR CAPing P-39Ds on Sumatra. About 11 planes lost and Kates sank an xAK just after. Only a few pilots KIA though which is good.

Shi usage per day is pretty easy to figure out using tracker shots from my previous games. I think I can find out roughly what he'd be using for ships, subtract that from the reserves plus daily oil and resulting fuel produced. It'll all be an estimate because if he realises the oil is a problem he could start shutting down HI and also running less convoys far afield. In fact he'll definitely have fewer ships moving than usual since he'll only need half as many oilers.

The Soviet biplanes got their asses handed to them today. A massive Oscar and Zero LR CAP over Arshaan hit our strikes, but luckily only fighters were affected. They made the ultimate sacrifice to get the bombers through, and although I lost 24 in A to A on the day, a lot of pilots were rescued and only 4 total bombers destroyed.

As I'd hoped, the rogue 24th A/division is bombed into submission and summarily wiped out by Soviet tanks. So that helps things immensely in the Southern area.

The main body is nearly to Sunwu, and I'll not start in until we have over 2,000 AV in hex in case the forts are as high here as the level 6 at Heiho.

Invasion Bonus over!!

A huge day for the Allies, and so many places yet to land for the IJA. The unload rates will be much longer, allowing some interdiction possibilities, or evacuation options, and Japanese forces will now need to prep. That is huge. Even lightly defended bases can be difficult to invade without prep.

Allied forces are still flowing into Sumatra, and soon if I can achieve a victory at Palembang, will look at other options.

Subs continue to bring back good intelligence on ship movements even when they can't get a hit. The Oi TF here may be planning to break out the ultra damaged Myoko, or just protecting her from bombardments.

A couple of underwhelming bombardments by RN forces at Sinkep and Mersing. No transports appear to be at Mersing now, which is interesting.

Another stellar day of strikes on the oil. The 4Es try for Saigon port, but the CAP distracts them enough that nothing hits. About 20 ships are listed in port here, so it must at least get Lowpe a bit nervous.

In the North Soviets continue to surround Sunwu. In the Aleutians SBDs find two xAPs near Attu and likely sink both, while Bolos attacking Attu hit AMC Aka Maru leaving her on fire with heavy damage!

I'm considering landing up here, but I may have to set out some exploratory picket ships to the West to make sure no CVs are hanging around. I do have three SBD groups int he area though, and about 100 fighters, so if they get too close they could find a bit of a surprise.

A quiet turn in the seas today, but bombers continue their work. Some of the best strikes yet.

Up North a rare IJAAF strike against Soviet troops caught in the clear. The AA does well though, and on the day it looks like 6-8 Sallys lost. The Arshaan march is going strong and should be ready to attack in a few days.

Today the Japanese moved a CA led surface force into the opening area to Palembang, probably aiming to catch bombardment TFs. I sent them to Singkep in the hope they could hit troops there before an attack by the small Dutch unit there. None of that went well, but on the good side, we didn't tangle with the IJN either. If we have to fight the CAs I need to be prepared and send the right TFs, and lots of them.

One group of USMC DBs flew and were crushed by LR CAP from landed CV groups probably operating from Muntok.

An S-boat shows that the TF near Palembang is the Maya, Chikuma and company, but can't get a hit.

The Soviets attacked with a DA at Sunwu and got a 1:1 while lowering forts to 5. So both of these bases had made level 6!! Our casualties aren't too bad, so we'll keep this going and see what happens. More units will be active tomorrow after just moving in as well. The IJA mostly lost tanks and motorised support from the looks of it. If this base falls then Heiho will be completely surrounded, but there is an experienced and tough division in there, too. It won't be easy.

Near Medan Kates venture out bravely without escort and hit an xAK loading fuel for Singers. The CAP here was hit a few turns ago and the group had to be sat down for a while. Eventually I'll be able to add more into this area. I'd like to get a steady stream from Medan to Singers.

Massive hits to the oil and we're near to reaching our goal. I may stop soon in case while trying to take the base even more damage is piled on the oil facilities. I'd like a bit here to use, but not enough to be attractive to take the base back. Djambi still has 80+ wells active though, so that could be used if Palembang is completely destroyed.

Troops have built to just over the stacking limits before attacking, with roughly 1,500AV of balanced infantry, armor, engineers and arty here.

The IJA looks vulnerable here, with an overabundance of engineers but fragments of fighting units and probably not much arty since the majority were flown in. I'd like to have a positive ground bombardment followed by some air and sea strikes on the IJA troops before launching a DA.

Soviets take Sunwu!!

On the second DA they lower the forts to 4 and take the base with a whopping 9:1 result. Nice work.

The IJa pulled two tank regiments before this battle, so I'll have to face them again in Heiho I think. Hopefully a bit beat up though. Most of the vehicles and tanks here are wiped out at least. Whoah Nelly!! In spite of the rollover saying Palembang was 98 percent damaged last turn, with a 9/10 recon reading, the base suddenly fills with an angry swarm of zeros and oscars!!

Our milk runs end up being a bit more costly this turn, but somehow, miraculously, still make it through for over 30 points of damage to the oil. Not sure how that happened. The 2Es took a bit of a hit, but only the Marauders (12 A to A and 3 ops losses) will be critically missed. Our Hurri sweeps absolutely cleaned up against huge odds, while the P-40Es traded about equally.

A good number of A6M2 (28 A to A and 11 ops losses) and some Oscar Ic (8 A to A and 3 ops losses) are lost, and this probably hurts him much more than our bomber losses since the Kaga, Soryu, Shoho, Hiryu and Zuiho groups are present here, leaving the KB a bit short. More than that, with capture of Palembang imminent, will he be able to get them out of the base if it's closed down, which it just might be tomorrow?

So in spite of the shock and the hit to the striking forces here it feels like this is the time for an all-in move that could really turn the tables for a while. I'm sending all available surface cruisers to bombard Palembang tomorrow. The 3 available USN CAs (2 others are just finishing some repairs at Singers) will form the main bombardment group, protected by the 2 RN CAs, with a solid CL bombardment TF and another small CL surface force, all coming from Singers. From Batavia I'll send in CA Canberra and 3 more CLs. The RN BBs will stay in port. Not ideal to send them into a night mission possibly against IJN CAs.

In other news it seems that Arshaan is very lightly held, and even in this good territory should fall within the week. I'll DA tomorrow ,and don't even have to risk the air force to help out.
