May 6, 1942 An interesting turn. The Kuching strikes are somewhat successful, but pay the price. I added 2Es into the mix and they simply shouldn't strike against CAP without escorts or lots of sweeps in advance. The sweeps today arrived after the strikes, although they took off closer to the target, so about 15 bombers were lost, mostly Wellingtons. A number of ships could sink, including three xAKE hit and left on fire. This is the first significant loss of bombers for a few months, and it marks the end of an offensive phase, as other goals have been achieved that allow a reduction in risk for bombing runs for a while. Later the Dorniers sortie again and seriously damage two IJN DDs carrying troops. The Yasagumo should sink after two hits and 'heavy fires, heavy damage.' The shortage of DDs must be getting critical now. Malacca falls with loss of another pile of Japanese troops. Again, 250+ devices destroyed on the on Malaya and at the Palamembang mop-up. This links and consolidates the Allied hold on lower Sumatra and cuts the rail link from both sides of Malaya toward Singers troops. I'll now target Mersing and Kuantan to reduce the ability to bring in supplies there as well, and continue to hit airfields close to Singers. A bunch of troops unloaded at Batu Palat without incident and more will go there and to other bases tomorrow. I hope too that the Kuching strike serves notice that the ships hiding in ports along Borneo are not protected there, and the Myoko and Mutsu especially will have to take to the seas wit their damage to fight through subs back to the repair yards. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR May 6, 1942 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Night Naval bombardment of Malacca at 49,81 Allied Ships CA Cornwall CA Dorsetshire Japanese ground losses: 45 casualties reported Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 7 disabled Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled Manpower hits 3 Resources hits 1 Fires 1167 Runway hits 5 Port hits 1 Walrus II acting as spotter for CA Cornwall CA Cornwall firing at Malacca -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Night Naval bombardment of Malacca at 49,81 Allied Ships BB Resolution BB Ramillies BB Royal Sovereign BB Revenge Japanese ground losses: 165 casualties reported Squads: 3 destroyed, 5 disabled Non Combat: 7 destroyed, 8 disabled Engineers: 2 destroyed, 0 disabled Guns lost 5 (2 destroyed, 3 disabled) Resources hits 1 Manpower hits 9 Fires 6928 Airbase hits 1 Airbase supply hits 2 Runway hits 6 Port hits 14 Port fuel hits 3 Port supply hits 1 BB Resolution firing at Malacca BB Ramillies firing at 55th/B Division -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Night Naval bombardment of Malacca at 49,81 Allied Ships CA Exeter CA Canberra CL Glasgow CL Mauritius Japanese ground losses: 90 casualties reported Squads: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 16 disabled Engineers: 1 destroyed, 0 disabled Resources hits 2 Manpower hits 3 Fires 11977 Airbase hits 2 Airbase supply hits 2 Runway hits 10 Port hits 3 Port fuel hits 1 Walrus II acting as spotter for CA Exeter CA Exeter firing at 55th/B Division -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on Kuching , at 58,88 Weather in hex: Overcast Raid detected at 29 NM, estimated altitude 14,000 feet.
