The real problem you will have with Lexington IMO is fuel. Where is she going and how much fuel is there for her and her entourage?

Good catch about PH, I didn't realize they were coming in above flak. Excellent pilots against motionless targets, even that high (at least in-game) spells trouble.

Not having so many of those old BB later does change some things for you, but in the meantime is no issue. Spending all of KB's time in Hawaiian waters right now should be an issue for him, though.

I'm hoping so.

I have two options for Lex. One is already sorted, which is the merging of the Lex and Enterprise TFs. The Enterprise and company come with longer range DDs and didn't make a flank run to the Marianas. So once put together they could reach Rabaul, Nauru, or a few other destinations I'm holding onto right now.

There is also a slow AO, the Sepulga, steaming through the Pacific well North of Midway that can provide 6,500 fuel if needed. She'll aim for Wake but if not needed veer to the North to get to Sara.

PH: Another strike. This time two BBs succumb at last to the hail of bombs. A few 800kg hits seal the deal for the Tennessee and Maryland takes a direct magazine shot with one and keels over into the mud.

So. The KB is 5 hexes from PH. I'll have 50-60 fighters repaired and ready next turn. The B-17Es have repaired from their flight in a few days ago from SF, and at 5 hexes the DBs, Havocs and Bolos would all have fighters escort. I'm setting everything to strike.

ALL IN!!

In addition to all available strike planes set to go tomorrow all subs will vector direct to the KB. The S-boats are even now 10-12 hexes aways, so some working torpedoes are near. Fingers crossed.

SUBS: Most subs are so useless at this point I'm being very careful where the Dutch and RN subs end up.

DEI: A Massive flotilla of SCTF and transports is cruising toward what looks to be Palembang. A good move. He's got the Ryujo here loaded with a crack zero group as my flights of the beasts and buffs got shot to hell. I'e got another 20-30 planes that could be escorted by up to 50 Buffs available, but I think I'll give this a pass. The pilots are still crap and the A6M still rules. I may concentrate on buying outage groups and sending them back for better days and better airframes. Plus, my focus for defence will be in areas that could lose me extra VPs later, like OZ. I need a lot more fighter groups than usually appear there to defend the interior so these Brit, Aussie and even a few Dutch unit could be useful if pilots and airframes are conserved.

Force Z is available for interdiction here and because Ryujo has no TB in her current setup based on search results, I may plan a run in, but it will be determined by what happens tomorrow and whether they're picked up by search early.

The straggling four stackers riddled in the previous night's engagements all make a getaway, but still need a few days to ensure they're out of the woods. First stop Balikpapan and then on to Soerabaja for a patch job before heading to OZ. The Boise and Houston TF will most likely retire to the Ambon area and await further action there.

At Singers the majority of units have made it to base, and one more brigade is getting into strat mode which will start railing in two days. All lower Malayan bases have a guard, but the Mersing troops will be pushing soon. I think the one brigade roughed up at Kuantan will not make it back or have to fight through. We'll see.

PACIFIC: The Lex and Enterprise meet up. A lot of relief here as the two task forces immediately equalise bunker stocks for all. So the next stage will be a tip-toe through the tulips to get to safety North or South of the main Marshall Island bases.

I'll run out of range of Truk and along a path leading to Wake for a day, then may veer North or South depending on developments. My recon to Roi Namur did not fly so I need it to go tomorrow and assess what is at that base. The starting Claudes won't do much for him there, but he can fly in A6M so I'll have to be careful about Nettie strikes from the size 4 field there.

Another small 5 plane B-17D group is flown in to Wake to aim at Roi if the fighter presence isn't huge there. If I can put a few hits on the base it'll reduce any possibilities of stuffing it as the USN nears the place. It would be nice to hit the port on the way through, too. See if his flak is better than mine!

CHINA: Ankang is para-dropped. I've got plans for this as I know it's a standard move these days. A corp is already heading that direction down the yellow road from the central plains. Another is pushing from Sian. A few more will head up the road from the South. I've got a few units allocated to move up from Sian once they arrive there, so anything he does will be surrounded, but the size 1 field is the most important part of the base. Tomorrow the CAF is set to hit with ~20 bombers and the AVG will LR CAP from Sian along with a low CAP of I-16 to try for transports. Paras don't drop engineers, so if the field is ruined before a base force can get in, that will be nice!

OZ: Lots of brigades in OZ in DBB! I don't remember so many from before, and the interesting thing i that they cannot combine into divisions. Hmmmmm. So. I guess there are both positives and negatives to that. Flexibility but less overall power.

Some interesting choices coming up about how to get through the Netties and potential subs out here.

PACIFIC: The Lex and Enterprise make it farther South and a bit east and will try to skirt both major air bases that have HQs and likely Netties. We'll veer closes to Kwajalein and farther from Truk most likely. Next turn I hope they end up near Eneweitok, which has no airfield, happily.

I can't get totally out of range but by staying farther from each hope to force less DL and long range strikes with potentially less coordination. We'll see. A few turns that could have lasting affects.

If the CVs do make it through I might have a good shot to cause some more trouble somewhere soon.

PH: The KB disappears!!

Suddenly the KB has gone, it seems. Just when I'd decided to make things get a little more interesting. I'm torn whether I should have tried a strike earlier, but the combo of repaired fighters and bombers with the arrival of B-17Es made we wait until today. Now I'll never know if the Cats would have been able to land a torpedo shot, if the low flying 4Es could have punched through CAP and put the hurt on a CV or two. With the BBs operating a few hexes away I though also it would be a perfect day to strike as there would be less flak and fewer ships to soak the strikes. Oh well. Next time!

Now PH will begin to recover. I'll start sending 4Es West. The 2Es will train. The fighters will train and fly CAP, and a few will eventually head off to OZ. The two Marine Def units have a destination already set but I can't take hem until the KB makes it's next destination known.

The Saratoga will continue to operate in the North now since a mid-Pacific renevous with the other CVs is not an option with the KB steaming somewhere. I do know it went North as the PTs still had DL today at 10/10. So I can pretty much see where he is today and will likely keep up some DL once he gets between Midway and Johnston Island.

Some thoughts on subs next.

SUBS: The subs from the last shot around Ph will all stream West aiming to hit the KB and also to scout it's location. I've decided on a USN sub strategy for the game. They will operate en masse and they will shadow the KB whenever possible. Knowing something of it's whereabouts could change everything, so I'll do my best to stagger patrols and flood the areas where the KB operates.

As a consequence of my decision all USN fleet boats will move to convene in the Marshalls/Gilberts until further knowledge of the KB position is known. Subs from Manila will use at Townsville (where two escaped AS are heading) and all from PH will probably change their base to OZ as well if the KB continues West past the Cent Pac islands.

Dutch boats will operate near Borneo and Java in blue water until Soerabaja is taken, then base out of OZ and guard approaches to Darwin, Perth and the rest. RN subs will guard approaches to Burma as they become available.

S-Boats will all move to base at Townsville as well but will remain in the So Pac area around the Solomons and New Britain, possibly along North New Guinea, also guarding the Eastern OZ areas. ASW air will not be trained up yet so it's easy to stay close to land even near the enemy for a while yet.

DEI: The IJ land massive force at Palembang. Looks like Lowpe will secure his oil first and worry about PI and Singers later. Maybe a quick and dirty move on Java too?

Could work. I'll position Force Z near Batavia in case any raiders come near but essentially they are overmatched here and will move back soon into the shadows again.

I've realised all Dutch air forces are [R] permanently, so only the RAF and RAAF units will move to OZ. The Dutch will battle it out as long as possible but I'll buy out some of the cheap small airbase units to send to backwoods bush areas in OZ to guard against deep resource hits. Places like Broken Hills.

Not much else will be done to resist the current push into the DEI. The ABDA command has determined from the initial battles that it's surface fleet is overmatched and will conserve forces in a general retreat to take as much oil and supply out of the area and live to fight another day. I'll keep the Good Dutch flying boats operating, and may set up some little dot base holdouts for later in the Southern DEI.

SO PAC: Vindicators and PBYs deal with some small xAKL heading into the So Pac area carrying troops. Love hitting troops on ships, no matter how small the units. It all adds up and slows him down.

CHINA: At Ankang CAF bombers get 26 hits on the fields and suffer no losses. The IJ seems content to sit here, and if he's not going to bring in other air units this paradrop will not work out. Too many Chinese units nearby and if the fields get wrecked, no way to support the troops on the ground through the addition of more transport.

Hong Kong still holds. Won't much longer of course.

DEI: Palembang falls to the IJ with little damage to the oil. Game on! I almost enjoy seeing this happen as I know now the Empire can breath a sigh of relief and plan for the future with it's main mission accomplished. This means secondary targets are now officially on the table, and defence of India, OZ and the West Coast proceed at full throttle.

A curious battle emerged near Batavia. Force Z was sent to the area to protect the tankers and other ships retreating through the straits off to Perth. 35k fuel made it through the gap plus about 10k supplies and a number of decent tankers and small, useful xAPs.

The IJN sent in 5 DDs which obliterated 3 AMc and then tangled with Force Z in a running battle. The IJN gave a good account of itself, and put a few directs onto the fragile RN DDs early, but lost 2 DDs, Uranami (Fubuki) and Nowaki (Kagero), in the first battle. The Durban also ate a long lance but should be fine. Love getting a Kagero put down early.

Two more IJN DDs could be in trouble after battle 2 if they can't put the fires out. It's a long way to shipyards at Saigon, but they could brave Palembang for a few to do some damage control. Hopefully they burn out on the way!

The RN will retire, and should only lose the Vampire.

PACIFIC: Cats strike again!!

PBYs are guarding North New Guinea with daring low level attacks against all kinds of IJ shipping. Low value targets here, and the IN will most likely get involved in a serious way soon once the USN CVs aren't lurking obviously nearby. Still this has been fun, and I hope a bit frustrating for Lowpe!

KEEPING UP WITH THE KB: Tracking the movement of the KB will be priority number 1. Here is a track of the past three days. All these subs in shot are fanning out West to work on different tracks and hopefully bump into the IJN along the way.

Gotta love the Kaga! Slowing things down here getting 8 hexes/day for the past two days. At this rate the USN subs should even outpace the KB in the race to set up around the Marshalls.

If the USN CVs get through the Nettie nets fro mTruk and Roi Namur then it should have clear sailing into some more trouble soon!

The Marine Kittens from Wake have recombined onto Lex with their whole group and that leaves some space on Enterprise. Wish I had more fighters, but that'll be a few months.

REPLENISHMENT

The Pecos makes it through from the PI and will be arriving at PM in about 2-3 days. The oiler is loaded with fuel (taken from Manila to get it out of Japanese hands) and will aim to rendezvous with the USN CVs at the earliest possible moment. In the meantime CV escorts will refuel from a few big transports in the Nauru and Solomons area to extend them to get to the oiler.

Saving this ship is key to the next stage for the Allied side and if the CVs arrive intact to be refuelled they should buy a week of freedom to operate anywhere to the West of PM.

If that happens I know exactly where they'll be heading!

ASW training - I tend to train up the bomber HQ air groups in ASW. They leave in mid-42, so you can get a few pilots trained up in this skill to some degree.

Good plan. I might add some on.

I'll also use the many soon to arrive FP groups to train and fly ASW. I want to get some of those soon to be trained pilots onto BB/CA/CL ASAP.

I think in DDB-C there are fewer engineers in the Dutch units. Not many there if any.

My last IJ game Torsten made a stand at Palembang, I didn't go fast enough to get it, and the base held in Japanese hands under siege for almost two months. Still, there was only around 80 points damage total by the end, and that all to the refinery.

I'm hitting it anyway, as if he takes it this early thee are lots of opportunities to cause some problems there. More 4Es on the way too!

STRAT BOMBING: Here we go! A bit of early strat bombing '41 style! He has no night fighters, and won't for years. This is the most vulnerable time for the oil of the DEI until the Allies are able to come back later in 43-45. He hasn't nullified Singers, hasn't hit Java, and hasn't yet taken out the PI fighters which are the next to be bought out. Only good for 6 months, but the first few could be valuable on offence and the last few they could really help out on defence.

I've bought out the PI 4Es. They're scattered, a bit roughed up, but it doesn' take many to have an effect. I started with two groups of only a total of 7 available airframes. they got through, hit, and caused damage that will cost Japan either oil or the supply it takes to repair the wells. I also bombed the manpower at Palembang, which started sites destroying a good number of refineries, and it's still burning.

They'll go again tomorrow, and the Dutch will join in more fully as well.

PI: Sent the RN DDs out from Manila to see if they could entice any Netties to play form Babeldaob. Sure enough, 7 strike, only one gets through. Some good EXP for the USAAF pilots and a few good Betty jocks splashed.

SO PAC: The IJN gets bold and comes in close to Kaveing with some of the Wake CL/DD TF. My CVs actually have fuel to hit these guys if they do hang around, but I won't risk it today. The Vindicators put a 1,000 pounder on CL Tenryu which is carrying troops. Cats miss the Yubari.

These look to be trying reinforce the troops at Kaveign. There is a lot of the USN here right now, so we'll see how long he decided to hang out and support there and what the DBs and Cats can do tomorrow.

DEI: The fight over Palembang turns to the night as a few lazy, slow Dutch B-10 hit the oil fields. One big bomb finds a target, keeping the fires going.

The Japanese land at Sorong. A number of planes sortie but only one PBY lands a 500lb bomb on Yamashiro. Claudes do a good job of frustrating other efforts.

PACIFIC: At Tarawa three USN CA bombard based on intel that several Japanese ships are in the harbor. It turns out to be correct as an xAKL and a PB are hit. Later in the day PBYs add to the damage, hitting a different xAKL and an xAK.

The CVs continue on toward So Pac and avoid any Nettie filled waters so far. The KB remains on the edges of the Marshalls. Not moving very quickly.

CHINA: Chinese bombing at Ankang continues in spite of Oscars trying to interdict. The paradrop incursion here won't succeed unless the IJN with it's crack A6M and Netties take part. Chinese troops move from all sides to cut off the base. Elsewhere most troops head to Changsha to rest and some form defensive blocks around critics bases like Sian and Kukong. Hong Kong continues to hold out.

The TF at Caving is a fast transport, and one of the CLs was hit last turn. I'll get the CVs close but won't risk them in escort range of Truk, so probably won't hit these ships unless they choose to hang out another turn.

Meiktila - Any way you can LRCAP this base to intercept any more transports? You know how short Japan is with decent transport planes this early in the war.

Logistics - I like setting up 3 CS TFs from San Fran to Pearl using the Transmarine Class xAKs with 2 or 3 of the small PCs as escorts. Set up different waypoints for them. One of the most important things an Allied player has to focus on is moving supplies away from the USA. Just read Dan's AAR and you can see how many supplies he is burning up in Luzon. I typically build up Christmas Island and Vava'u (largest port potential in SoPac outside of Aukland) as my two hubs. The plentiful 12 knot xAKs take 30 days to get from San Fran to Sydney. So, only 6 trips per year for each of these ship. I like the T2-SE-A Class TKs to be in CS TF from LA to Pearl. Its high capacity with relatively low Endurance to move fuel.

Thanks.

I've got some Buffs on LR CAP so far and have been bombing the fields as well. He hasn't moved more in. It should be tough to hold this but still have to cover the other vulnerable bases as well. Not much here as you know!

Currently I've sent a massive first fuel shipment to So Pac and Sydney, and I'll begin getting the xAKs moving next. I want to make sure th eKB is accounted for before flooding So Pac with slow transports!

A lot will come from Cape Town to OZ as well. I've got all available xAKs from OZ with LR and some from the DEI heading there. I'll skirt the lower edge of the board to Adelaide most likely. I found this to be a good route as long as the IJN can be kept out of the area. Greyjoy did make one move down here in our game!

A bit behind here! Would like to catch up this week but might be off the grid for a few days on the Easter weekend. We'll see. Some interesting developments!

SUBS: The Dutch subs will begin to congregate exclusively in the area around Balikpapan. This is nice deep water and he has to move through at some point.

DEI: Got two hits on oil at Miri with B-17Ds supported by P-40s from the PI. Lost a bunch of B-10s at Brunei when LR CAP didn't show. I'll take it. If he keeps taking the big oil bases he'll soon have a lot of bases to cover. I'll begin to hit other bases with HI and LI too.

PACIFIC: Kaveign falls to the newly landed naval guard. No further hits on the fast transport ships there.

CHINA: Got to some Anns here. He's still using a lot of 1E bombers. Suits me. Short ranged, underpowered, no armor and light payloads. They AVG will be staying for a while.

Hong Kong forts to 0, and it'll fall soon.

OZ: There are no fighters in OZ. This bothers me. I've got some shipping across, but it'll be 15-20 days before arrival. How did the Aussies have no fighters here at the beginning of the war?

The oil has some damage, but if I can keep the hits coming, this could really hurt the beginning efforts of the Japanese in a lot of ways. Piling supply into fixing oil fields means there will be less for R & D, less for expanding industry or building forts/fields, and less to use for follow on big invasions.

GAME: I'm seriously behind here as I've had time to play a turn a day but only enough for a few sporadic updates while traveling. I'lll get caught up, but this is a tense opening, and both sides are taking some risky steps. The Japanese seem to want to move quickly in the DEI, and if that's the case, I wonder what is coming. Singers is still very active and that will have to be dealt with to go toward India, but not to OZ, so we'll see. I'm preparing as much as I can for a strat raid in OZ especially, but there just aren't many fighters or AA units around right now.

INDIA: All major Indian units have moved to Karachi or Bombay. The Brit 18th will shore up Bombay some more and then anything new will go to Socotra, Diego and other bases needed to hold the LOC from Cape Town, Abadan and Aden. Calcutta, Madras and other major Eastern Indian locations will not be defended. Nearly all of the fuel and supply have been removed from Colombo as well.

PACIFIC: The Lex and Enterprise make it into safer waters, heading for Port Moresby. The KB is moving South of Wake and I've sent al ships on and out of the way. DM Ramsay is caught and torpedoed by an RO-66 near Wake.

CHINA: The AVG picks off a few more at Hong Kong for no losses.

DEI: At Palembang Oscars wipe out more B-10s, but the sacrifice is worth it as the B-17Ds get through unscathed for a few more hits on the manpower to keep the fires burning. Sorong is taken.

On the 21st the Dorniers hit DD Minegumo with a big 300kg bomb near Sorong. Might sink an old DD, we'll see. Nice they're adding a bit to the cause anyway.

On the 20th P-40s sweep Palembang and get some good shots in at the Nates and Oscars. Anywhere I see Nates I'll try to hit!

On the 21st I kept on, but this time the B-17Es are involved!! They slice right through the Oscars and just added A6M2 and hit Palembang for 7 more shots to the oil. That should cost 20k supply and some lost production judging by the after turn recon.

NO PAC: The Japanese land at Amchitka. They have Adak already. I'e just begun flying a regiment in parts to bases on the extended perimeter here. I'll try to bomb these newly established posts and counter invade. It's tough for him to keep CVs here to monitor it all ,and if he does, then I'll know where they are.

Looks like more coming. Maybe to Tartan, maybe Balikpapan. I'll try to get the CVs into the fray here soon, but probably can't get em in fast enough. Have to sweep for subs too.
