My naval search from Rabaul is not what it should be as this lot has turned up unannounced on my door step at Milne Bay. A good thing then that the Betty pilots were up for the job and landed some useful torpedo hits. The 4 Kako sisters are at Milne Bay and will be ordered post haste to make a run into Milne Bay and see what lurks there. Kaga, Zuiho and Ryujo are also handily placed to position themselves for the provision of aerial cover. Three destroyers from the Kaga TF escort are ordered to peel off and poke around at Milne Bay.

6 Light Cruisers (including the renowned Boise) and 7 Destroyers up against my 4 “Heavy” Cruisers and 4 Destroyers. As the action rolled on by I got the very distinct feeling that the IJN wasn’t having a particularly impressive day. By the time the two fleets disengaged every Japanese ship barring Mochizuki had broiling clouds smoke issuing from them. I had a bad feeling about how many ships would be in any condition to steam back to Rabaul. The Allied fleet on the other hand appeared to have feared rather well although some of their Light Cruisers were also throwing off decent smoke plumes. Range in this engagement goes down to 6000 feet.

The Pacific War has lit up after what could fairly be described as something of a phony war on the waves up until now (notwithstanding the submarine menace from both sides). These Allied warships have been busy in the Dutch East Indies / Philippines and now in Australian waters. By days end I think a good number of the enemy warships are hurting and the prize (those troop ships) have been picked out again and delivered more pain.

And what of the injured Japanese combatants? Isokaze is the only loss. The rest still float and make for a safe port. Damage stats follow.

After Japanese planes scored some success on this reinforcement task force last turn I am left wondering why it is still in place serenely unloading. No doubt the Allies are intending on making this one painful thorn in my side but to reinforce without a combat SAG or two to brush aside my rather light weight force. A decent number of Commonwealth light cruisers put in an appearance yesterday at Burma so they are accounted for the time being. Now…. What of the American carriers. Will they appear to tilt the balance at Milne Bay?

Japanese forces CAPTURE Gasmata!!!

Caught napping at Rabaul with insufficient CAP in the air. Ed is happy to clean up a bunch of support ships. I’m more grieved to lose the submarines. Ed also reported that the B-26s weren’t meant to fly but thanks to a lucky clicking error they flew and obtained a good result for the Allies. A temporary setback and in all honesty, I’ll take this over the airfield being plastered. As for my victorious ships from yesterday… for some reason they did not vacate the field as I thought I had ordered them. Amazingly the damage is not too bad. The damaged ships will recover if they make a harbour unmolested by underwater dangers. And as expected the Gasmata invasion task force was also targeted. Kaga and friends were covering and happily chewed up the flight of dive bombers looking for easy prey.
