Dickens is mobile too. The modern version of Great Expectations (with Gwyneth Paltrow) was well done.

Wait, great expectations and Gwyneth Paltrow? My expectations are for Gwyneth to show some nudity.

Nobody has mentioned 'Cross of Iron'. I liked it a lot.
James Coburn as the grizzled sarge and I think it was James Mason as the medal seeking officer.

I think it was Maximillian Schnell who was the medal seeking officer (who never figured out how to reload his MP-40). I liked it a lot as well.

I've liked most of the movies that have been mentioned in this thread. I'm also partial to Ronald Maxwell's Gettysburg.

Yes, now I can picture his face.

Mister Roberts is one of my favorite WW II movies. Henry Fonda, James Cagney, Jack Lemmon all did a superb job.

I allways enjoyed In harms way. Flying tigers. Sands of Iwo Jima. Non WW2 - Zulu and Zulu dawn. When I went through my USAF academy training we studied 12 o'clock high for leadership and 12 angry men for group/meeting interaction. Wound up enjoying both quite a bit.

Just for the record, I Love Kelley's Heroes. I saw it when it was released at the theaters back in 1970 (just starting high school).

Yeah, I know Oddball was not a WW2 archetype, more reflective of 1969 than 1944 - but as someone before said "it was a bank heist movie" with WW2 window dressing... and really a whole lot of fun.

Woof woof.

According to IMDb, Kelly's Heroes was based on a true incident in a book titled "Nazi Gold: The Sensational Story of the World's Greatest Robbery--and the Greatest Criminal Cover-Up" by Ian Sayer and Douglas Botting.

Sorry, no. It just isn't in the same league.

I was going to say in my post above that 'Kelly's Heros' was very similar to and just as much fun as 'The Italian Job' when I read in the trivia that they were both written by the same screenwriter, Troy Kennedy-Martin.

How about that.

(You also gotta love Mini Coopers....)

My taste in movies runs more to character driven dramas. Here's some lesser known titles that have WWII as a backdrop. I believe they were all made in Europe. I highly recommend all of them....

The Darkest Hours
[Gary Oldman truly deserved his Oscar for this portrayal of Churchill]

Alone In Berlin
The Book Thief
Winter in Wartime
Anthropoid

just two things about Kelly's heroes.

1. see if you can find the extended version. Yes there is another version out there with another 20 minutes of footage and it really ties the movie together much better.
2. this movie is the sole reason tigers exist. if it wasn't for this movie hollywood tigers wouldn't be a term and every movie after wouldn't have one it in. Look up hollywood tiger. In fact I play a game called bolt action and it has tiger miniatures and also hollywood tiger miniatures. Amazing what came from this one movie.

also let's make a deal... what kind of deal??? a deal deal... still use that line all the time

A good recent film is Warsaw '44 (Miasto 44 in Polish), about the siege of Warsaw.
Yes, it has subtitles.

I suppose it would be crazy to mention "Catch-22".

Can't wait to see what they'll do with the mini-series.
