Ground combat at Chungking (76,45)
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 10147 troops, 673 guns, 725 vehicles, Assault Value = 3793, minus 1763 since the deliberate attack yesterday that dropped forts to 2. I believe that’s the most disablements yet, so I’m not seeing evidence of casualties reducing as the forts reduce. Maybe things will improve now that the forts are at 2, but casualties were still high when they were at level 3.
Defending force 138605 troops, 649 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 3909, minus 405 as a result of the battle. That’s roughly equal to the number of destroyed + disabled squads so the evidence still suggests that the defenders are struggling to recover much AV each turn.
Allied ground losses:
228 casualties reported
Squads: 18 destroyed, 11 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
GEN Sugiyama, in his role as Chief of the Army General Staff, has called for a conference involving representatives from each Army Theatre Command HQ to plan for future operations once Chungking has been captured.
CIC Kwantung Army, GEN Umezu, is still as nervous as ever about the threat posed by the Soviets, and is keen to see what he still thinks are “his” HQ 20th Army and loaned divisions returned to Manchukuo. He will be disappointed with the outcome of the conference.
CIC CEA, GEN Hata, is looking forward to receiving his Field Marshal’s baton and is so confident that Chungking will be captured before the end of October that he has just submitted a leave application so he can spend November in Japan. He will remain as CIC CEA, but is aware that his Command will rapidly become a garrison force and he is expecting that most of his regular IJA divisions will be transferred to other theatres.
CIC SEA, GEN Terauchi, has requested reinforcements to enable the advance to resume into NE India, but is aware that he still has a few more months to defend the SW Frontier of the Empire before he can expect divisions from China to be transferred to his Command.

1st RGC Capital Division arrives at Nanking – the arrival of this garrison Division prompts a wholesale reorganisation of garrison forces in China and Manchukuo. I must have replanned the location of the RGC, NCPC and Mongolian Garrison Army units about a dozen times over the years, but I finally planned it from scratch and think I’ve come up with an efficient option that frees up the maximum number of IJA regular units for mobile operations.

Yunnan and Far NW China garrison forces

57th and 58th Divs could move further forward with 59th Div split into thirds to garrison the bases in the Mountains, but the need for that is still in the distant future.

Morning Air attack on 55th Mountain Gun Regiment, at 63,38 (Jorhat)
Ki-45 KAIa Nick x 1 – the Nicks seem to have the best staying power. I assume being more durable than Oscars and Tojos helps.
I am saving up PP to change the 44th and 45th Sentais in China from light bombers to Nicks next. That will cost 360 + 270 PP, so 7 days and 6 days worth of PP each. Nicks are easily the most effective counter bomber “fighter” that the IJA has right now so the focus for PP spend for the next few months will be on completing the remaining light bomber to Nick conversions. The IJA fighter pilot training program is only just keeping up with demand, so I can’t send all FB units to the front line or I won’t be able to keep the pilot training rate high enough.

Ground combat at Chungking (76,45)
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 10465 troops, 682 guns, 758 vehicles, Assault Value = 5240, +225 since yesterday. While the raw AV ratio looks good, disruption and fatigue are still a bit too high to attack. I don’t think I will wait for disruption to drop to 0 now that forts are at level 2, so the next attack will be launched on 20 or 21 Sep.
Defending force 144614 troops, 639 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 4136, minus 10 since yesterday.

Defending force 73431 troops, 289 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2610 in 7x Chinese Corps, so that’s 372AV on average each. There is a 600+ monster in this stack, so the future Battle for Changsha will be another tough grind.

Morning Air attack on Americal Infantry Division, at 77,131 , near Daly Waters – the Americal seems to be moving SE along the slow road back towards Queensland.
The 2nd Aust Army with 1st and 5th Divs also looks to be advancing north from Daly Waters. The IJA 16th Army is waiting for them at Katherine, so if the Aus troops advance that far there will be another battle in 7-10 days.

RADM Fujita is only 2 days from getting the damaged ships from the Battle of Santa Cruz debacle back to Kure.
Kaga is still at Rabaul with 99 days to finish emergency repairs, but I won't leave it there that long.

Are you going to convert any or all of the CS units to CVL? Curious your take on that.

Mizuho is kind of a separate issue, since the slow speed really limits the usefulness of that unit

I've flip flopped on this since the game started, but I've been convinced that my best bet is to convert them all. Main reasons:

- more fighters over the fleet is never a bad thing. With all 4x CVL conversions that is +120 slots available. I will allocate all of the converted CVL capacity to fighters on defensive CAP.
- floatplanes sometimes don't fly in bad weather, while weather seems to have less impact on CV/CVL flight ops
- CVL Mizuho gets a max speed bump up from 22 to 24 knots, which is only 1 less than CVs Junyo and Hiyo. I will probably make a "fast" CV task force (VADM Nagumo) and a "slow" CV/CVL task force (RADM Yamaguchi). There will also be a slower CVE task force (RADM Fujita). If I have any CVs left by the time the CS > CVL conversions have finished that is!

The IJN carrier force is in disarray at the moment with 3x CVs out of action, Akagi permanently. I have bought the Akagi airgroup back to use as a pilot training group.

Kaga will be out of action for something like 5-6 months and still needs to be moved safely back to Japan to finish major repairs.

Zuikaku and the 2x damaged Kongo escorts will arrive at Kure tomorrow and should all be back in business before the end of 1942.

I'm going to raid the Bay of Bengal shortly with a slow CV/CVL task force to try and sink the remaining RN BBs. They will probably bombard Chittagong again soon. The IJN 2nd Fleet will command this operation. The older surface ships from Battle Force will join in, including 2x BB Fuso, 2xCA Furataka, 2xCA Aoba, 3xCL Kuma and 20+ DDs between them.

After that raid, all carriers will concentrate back in the Pacific and will rotate through Kure (probably in pairs, or by Division) to complete upgrades.

The main news is the Round 6 Deliberate Attack at Chungking.
Forts dropped to 1, but the IJA just missed out on 1:1 adjusted odds so the IJA casualties, disruption and fatigue were about the same as Round 5.
Chinese casualties were higher than last attack but still less than the IJA suffered.
It will take about 10 days to recover again, but the next attack should get at least 1:1 odds now.

SS Trusty – Dutch and British subs are sitting in the shallow water base hexes at Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Akyab. This DMS Div will probably just get itself sunk by a sub or from air attack, but they have CAP set overhead and will roll the dice for a few turns to see if they can sink HMS Trusty.
SS Trusty is located by DMS W-10
Trusty bottoming out ....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Cairns , at 92,140 – encouraged by the result yesterday, a frontal attack on Cairns is ordered. A6M2s do well against the P39s, but I probably should stick to sweeping bases 1-2 hexes away from big allied airfields to keep the numbers advantage. The allied counter would be to reduce the range of their defensive CAP.

Morning Air attack on Ndeni , at 120,143
A6M5 Zero x 24
A6M5 Zero: 8 destroyed – not good as I was hoping the aircraft quality would keep most of the sweepers safe, but they were mostly 50ish experience rookies that were lost. The 70+ experience pilots seemed to do well. Lesson learnt #462, don’t send <70 experience pilots on sweeps against big allied air bases. I was hoping for a coordinated ~50x Zero sweep but it didn’t come off.

Ground combat at Chungking (76,45) - Round 6 of the Battle of Chungking.
Japanese Deliberate attack

Defending force 145594 troops, 627 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 4177
Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 1
Japanese adjusted assault: 3961
Allied adjusted defense: 4207

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 1), that’s 0.94 to 1. Next attack should be 1:1 which I am hoping will reduce the fatigue and disruption scores, as well as the casualty numbers.

Since discovering you can use Naval HQ leaders, best practice here in my mind is to switch Yamamoto out of Combined Fleet and replace him with a desk jockey.

Then send Yamamoto to command the fast carriers, and use Yamaguchi for the slow carriers.

Nagumo never makes the cut with me due to that naval skill of his. It strikes me as a disaster waiting to happen...

I am playing DDBC Scenario 28....you must be playing something different, because CVL Mizuho does not pick up 2 kts of speed in my database. 24 kts would make it a no-brainer.....it's not worth it to slow everyone down to 22kts, so Mizuho for me usually just hangs with the CVEs.

I go back and forth as well on conversions; CVL is clearly better, but 10 months is a long time, and by then it may not matter vs. an Allied DS. Still, I am probably inclined to convert, the deciding factor for me is the weather....if I could count on all those Jakes flying, I would probably keep at least 1 or 2 CS

The Mizuho gets an extra two knots in the stock scenarios IIRC.

The CVL conversion is always worthwhile in my book.

Good idea to get more out of Yamamoto, he is wasted in game staying as a shore based Fleet commander.
He would also make a good land based Air Fleet commander, to use his air skill, but there are enough VADMs with decent air skills that he's not needed there either.

After I sent the turn off I spent a bit of time refreshing my memory on the IJN Admirals. I already plan to assign them as Area Fleet Commanders, and free up some of the VADMs from Fleet HQ command that are better suited to Air Fleet HQ command.
It looks like only a few of the senior ADMs can command task forces, plus the one with no first name which I think is a fictional character.

A few other things I noticed.
- I can't get ADMs Kato or Hasegawa to command BB task forces, but they can command CV task forces
- VADMs can't command CVE task forces

They should all be able to if the TF is above a certain size.

You can also work around the CVE restriction by creating large TF's, assigning the commanders you'd like, and then transferring ships in and out.

I normally have a holding TF of a single CV with Yamamoto in command whenever the KB is in port - saves PPs when reforming the ships and the game auto-selects an unsuitable commander.

Right you are.
I tried again with more than 4x BB and escorts in a task force and these ADMs are then available.
It wasn't working with only 2x BB plus a few escorts in a task force.

I do the same with task forces to keep the commanders that I want to retain, sometimes they have to hoist their flag in a destroyer!

This is a summary of the IJN ADMs and what they did historically, in rough order of seniority.
ADM Toyoda, Soemu arrives in the game soon. I might replace Yamamoto with him, leaving all the political ADMs on the reserve list until I have enough PPs to send some to command Area Fleets.

I've also looked again at the VADMs and there are three that look like they would make better air combat task force commanders than VADM Nagumo. As a minimum they will make good land based Air Fleet HQ commanders: Inouye, Ozawa and Kusaka.

Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 240 troops, 29 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1077

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Ledo (65,38) – it’s been a while since the “banzai” sound effect from a captured base was heard on the combat replay. This could help unhinge the frontline in NE India, but probably not immediately as I don’t have any spare Divisions available to follow up. It could force the allies to move something to block the advance path that is opening up for the 51st Div to move around the northern flank of the allies, or they could just sit and wait. At a minimum, if the Allies were planning to advance shortly towards Chittagong, or in the centre by launching 1st Australian Corps from Silchar then it might delay those plans.

Oil and Refineries are both captured at 63(7) plus stockpiles of 1131 fuel and 11567 oil. I won’t bank on any of it getting back to Japan. I will switch off repairs and if the allies bomb it then that would be better than them bombing IJA units.

The big bonus was the capture of 8327 supply as that would take a long time to move to Ledo via the tracks from Burma. Some of this supply will probably get bombed by the allies now, so the defenders need to build forts quickly to try and protect it. Some can move to the 55th Div at Jorhat two hexes west to help keep them in supply and reduce the impact of the regular bombing they are getting. If some can move to Kohima that would be great too, as it is in the red at the moment. Very roughly, about 1500 supply is needed just to feed an A grade IJA Div per month, not including combat. This 8327 supply is very welcome, but it won’t last long.

Japanese Shock attack

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), morale(-), experience(-)

Japanese ground losses:
366 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 36 disabled – at the end of the turn, 18 disabled infantry squads, 4 disabled combat engineers, 4 disabled HMG squads, 1 disabled motorised squad and 3 disabled cavalry squads. Whatever was destroyed is unknown as there are a few excess squads and devices, so this Div remains 99% combat effective.

Allied ground losses:

Non Combat: 42 destroyed, 15 disabled

Units retreated 1 – NW along the slow road.
Units destroyed 1
Assaulting units: All units were 100% prepared for Ledo.
51st/A Division – the combat engineers will dig forts as quickly as possible. 51st/B Div is just behind and should arrive in move mode tomorrow to help fortify.
51st/C Division – will follow along the slow road, with another assault river crossing required if the enemy doesn’t run away. 51st/C Div will advance as far as required to link up with 55th Div elements south of the river at Jorhat, then dig in to await reinforcements from China.
23rd Army – will stay at Ledo to help boost the defences.
Defending units:
1st South India Base Force – I assume this is the units that retreated NW.
20th Indian Mountain Gun Regiment – I assume this unit was destroyed as it should be the smaller one.

13th Garrison Unit arrives at Hiroshima/Kure – 16th Army, will move to defend Soerabaja. Once 16th Army is done with its Northern Territory adventure it will move back to defend Java.
14th Garrison Unit arrives at Hirosaki/Aomori – 16th Army, will move to defend Batavia.
15th Garrison Unit arrives at Osaka/Kyoto – 25th Army, will move to defend Palembang. Once 25th Army is finished in the Arakan it will move back to defend Sumatra.
16th Garrison Unit arrives at Hirosaki/Aomori – Southern Army, will move to defend Benkolen west of Palembang.
12th Garrison Unit arrives at Osaka/Kyoto – Southern Army, part of the future 94th Division.
18th Garrison Unit arrives at Hirosaki/Aomori – Southern Army, part of the future 94th Division.

Historically the 94th Div was used in Malaya/Singapore, but the future plan here is to assign the 91, 93, 94 and 96 Divs to 32nd Army to defend Okinawa and the surrounding islands. Until these troops are needed for defensive duties I will use them to help mop up the remaining allied bases on the China coast, including Pakhoi, Nanning and Wenchow. Lacking combat engineers, they won’t be able to do much on their own but will add infantry squads to those upcoming attacks in support of China Expeditionary Army troops. They will also be a strategic reserve of sorts, if needed to counter an allied move somewhere that is currently lightly defended. When not being used for something meaningful, they will rest/train somewhere that has enough supply to feed them without ships having to move it to them, probably Singapore.

Other units currently in strategic reserve are:

- 7th Div is mostly back at Sapporo, with some still on ships moving back from the Aleutians. Defending the Aleutians now are Maizuru SNLF units, 4x IJNAF units and 3x IJA independent battalions. The allies have started taking recon photos, so a determined allied push up here could retake all bases.

- 21st Div is now at Singapore and is free to commit anywhere it might be needed. This is the first time I have had a Division in reserve since the war started. I could move it to Chittagong shortly under cover of the slow CV Squadron and SWAF elements of Battle Force, but it wouldn’t make enough of a difference to unlock that front. Instead, I will keep it in reserve at Singapore where plenty of AK-t are available to move it to anywhere it is needed relatively quickly. I will try to be patient and wait until reinforcements from the China Expeditionary Army move overland to India with orders to unlock that front.

- 52nd Div is still recovering at Tokyo following the Battle of Adak Island. It is back to 93% of TOE with only 67 infantry squads still disabled. I have split it into thirds and will wait until it is 100% recovered before moving it to Burma/NE India. It is 66% prepared for Jorhat with plans to move it to reinforce 55th Div there, bringing the 55th Cav Regt with it. It will start moving in a few weeks time, so by the time it arrives it will be 100% prepared.

Garrison reorganisation in Manchukuo.

Imperial Manchukuo Army units provide more than enough AV to garrison the cities, but IJA units need to stay to keep the total garrison above 8000.
IMA Cavalry units will provide a presence at each base in the open terrain to counter future Soviet parachute operations.
The larger IMA District Divs will garrison the larger cities, with the front line border forces generally provided by IJA regular army units.

To be able to move the other Divs on this list out of Manchukuo/Korea, units will either have to move in from China or Southern Army will have to wait until 1944 when Kwantung Army reinforcement Divs will arrive with enough AV to free them up. 1944 will be too late, so it has to be option 1.

One option to consider is once China is wrapped up, to move the IJA divisions with the poorer TOE's back to Manchuria and swap them for the more potent divisions.

The C-type TOE's are basically just infantry, while the B-type tends to have more arty, and the A's will likely throw some tanks in for good measure.

It is worth taking it on a case by case basis, as the C-type divisions do have a niche in "holding bases that probably won't get invaded but are prudent to garrison heavily". Truk springs to mind. Less supply consumption due to less devices (both artillery and in general) is also worth keeping in mind.

EXP is another consideration, as I'd be reluctant to send a 90 EXP division to fester in Manchuria when it could do stellar work defending x3 terrain (where the lack of firepower is less important) somewhere closer to the Allied spearpoint.

With this raw AV ratio IGHQ has high hopes for doing some serious damage during the next deliberate attack. Forts are still at level 1 so the city is not expected to be captured, but dropping forts to zero and causing high casualties is anticipated. Ideally, with low fatigue and disruption for the attackers so it doesn’t take another 10 days to attack again. The next attack will be on the 1st of October.

220 casualties reported

Delayed planes for the aircraft pool:
5 (0) x Ki-36 Ida, 14 (35) x Ki-43-Ic Oscar – A few fighter units in China have handed their Oscars back in and taken Nates as training aircraft. That is to put a few more Oscars into the reserve pool in case the air-air losses keep increasing.
