This is the big news, with the orders given to HQ "Korea" Army to attack at Dimapur.

12th Div just arrived so will remain in Reserve mode as it has no field forts yet.
17th Div is only 18 miles away so will arrive within a week, then also dig in.

Attacking troops include 2x Tank Divs and 8x Infantry Divs, plus 3x Tank Regts. HQ Korea Army is in command with HQs 15th and 20th Armies in support.
HQ Southern Army is back at Myitkyina and 100% prepared for Dimapur, with the intent for it to help from there with some sort of AV bonus.
If this attack doesn't achieve at least 1:1 odds then I expect heavy casualties...

There are movement arrows popping up in a few places on the allied side of the front so they are reacting, and the attackers have good supply today so it feels like now or never.

On the IJA left flank, 25th Army with 2x Divisions and lots of support units has advanced into the clear hex and will push on to Comilla within a few days. HQ 3rd Air Div has flown to Chittagong over the last few days to support about 90 fighters on LRCAP above 25th Army.

In the centre of the front, HQ 2nd Area Army with 4x Infantry Divs will arrive at the gates of Silchar in two days.

Other reinforcements still moving are:
- 3rd Tank Div, moving from Katha to Imphal
- HQ CEA, with 3x Corps HQs, 13th, 15th, 27th and 32nd Divs is further back, on the Lashio-Paoshan road. If things go well at Dimapur, most of this force will follow up. If things go pear-shaped and the allies try to counter-attack anywhere, this force will consolidate the defence of upper Burma.

Yeah, me too, unless someone else chimes in with more info.

This from CT’s game just now, it looks like Grace carries 2x250kg bombs in the internal bomb bay on DB missions.
That makes the D4Y4 something a bit different due to the standard 800kg bomb it carries.

Aircraft Attacking:
11 x B7A2 Grace releasing from 1000'
Naval Attack: 2 x 250 kg SAP Bomb
22 x B7A2 Grace releasing from 2000'
Naval Attack: 2 x 250 kg SAP Bomb
8 x B7A2 Grace releasing from 3000'
Naval Attack: 2 x 250 kg SAP Bomb

Even the 500 kg bomb from the third Judy would be better than that. Maybe the 800 kg bomb is only used when flying level with highly skilled pilots.

Bomb-wise yes, but Grace has got longer legs, and I’ll have to compare their other stats like speed and manoeuvrability.
I’m building some D4Y1 then skipped straight to the D4Y4.
Grace not carrying the 800kg makes me feel a bit better about all the supply I’ve spent on the Judy program.

It isn't the 800 kg bomb on the D4Y that makes any difference, its that at extended range it carries a 500kg bomb and at extended range you are 1 hex longer than the USN DB's ... you now have the range advantage again with both TB and DB... you just have to create the scenario where you can attack from that distance ...

Thanks for the reminder Pax.
I’ll refresh myself on the Grace vs Judy stats this evening when I get back to the game.
It looks like there is a role for both.

Inter web search for Judy vs Grace wasn’t particularly helpful, but it did throw up this interesting result:

Heavy losses inflicted on the RAF over the clear hex between Chittagong and Comilla.
The total score in the air was reported as 79:7!

Day 1 of the Battle of Dimapur also goes well with a 3:1, dropping forts to 3.
All Divisions are in decent shape with 11th Div taking the most casualties, but still at 75% TOE.
Disruption and fatigue are relatively low, but it might take a week for enough supply to move forward for another attack.
GEN Itagaki as GOC Korea Army is senior commander on the spot, so he takes the credit.

A few images to follow later, but morale is high on the Bengal Front.

These are the before and after stats of the Japanese Army at Dimapur.
The raw AV ratio here now is about 4700 : 1000 in the IJA's favour.

Most of the allied aircraft were shot down by one of these IJAAF fighter units.
Some good experience gains with very few IJAAF losses.

This is the situation on the Bengal Front.
Red movement arrows are all legit, no deception plans anymore.
The white movement arrows are the allied moves that have been indicated.

The allied reaction today in Bengal was to set some LRCAP over Dimapur and send an unescorted Fulmar bombing strike against 25th Army, which gets shredded.

I had a bad feeling all day that I’d left a CA task force dangling in the Coral Sea without air cover.
I did, but they didn't get attacked...

RADM Miwa brings another 76,750 units of oil home safely. His task force will move to Sasebo to allow the DD Wakatakes to take their 2/43 upgrade and reclassify as Escorts. It's a good upgrade as the main guns are replaced with dual purpose guns, an air radar is fitted (this radar is useless for the current escort role, I'd prefer a surface search radar to help with ASW - that radar comes with the 6/44 upgrade) and the depth charges are upgraded to Type 95 Mod-2s. Some recently upgraded W-19 class Escorts will replace the Wakatakes to keep the Oil pipeline operating.

2nd IMB will clear the last 2 visible Chinese units in China, that have been holding out in the Mountains.
2nd IMB will then move to a garrison role at Chengtu, to allow 3rd IMB to move to Chungking as the garrison.
In turn, that will allow 19th IMB (which becomes the 129th Div in 803 days) to move to Manchukuo.

The Army at Dimapur, disruption and fatigue reduce slightly, about +80 AV and +200 supply since yesterday.
12th Div digs itself in to stage 1 forts so will join the next attack.

2nd Area Army with 3x Divs arrives at Silchar, with enough supply to attack.
It won't attack or bombard until it has level 2 field forts, as previous recon indicates it is up against 2xDivs and 1x Armd Bde.
This force will dig in and prepare to defend if the allies try an attack here.
53rd Div and 1x AT Regt are still 26 miles away from joining the hex. 53rd Div will flip 2x hexsides on the way in.

Singapore had >150k supply a few days ago, which for a city in the occupied territories is bordering on excessive.
The Resources stockpile is also building so 2x Lima convoys will start moving some back to Japan.
Before the first task force starts it will move 80k of supply to Burma, in the hope that a decent amount moves forward to the front lines.

LGEN Adachi is GOC 18th Army with 4x Divisions moving along the Kokoda Trail towards Port Moresby.
The Int Staff are not sure if the allies still have 2x Divisions defending, but they also have a large advantage in vehicles.
The hope is that the vehicles are mostly trucks, but there could well be allied tank units defending by now behind level 4ish forts...
The IJN will have to bring the BBs back to support future attacks at Port Moresby, but that is still about 2 weeks away.

GEN Nakamura is CIC 8th Area Army at Lae, within command range to assist.
LGEN Itahana with 6th Air Div is also at Lae.
LGEN Obata with 7th Air Div is on ships moving south, just near the Marianas. 7th Air Div will move to Buna to provide more close air support to 18th Army.

I compared the Judy variants months ago, but just had a chance to also compare the Grace against them.

I haven't done a detailed comparison, but it looks like quite a few allied DBs can reach out to 8 hexes, albeit with 500lb rather than 500kg bombs, and the F4F4 or F6 could escort them if equipped with drop tanks.

IJN tactics for a potential late 1943 carrier battle seem to be to try and keep to 8 hex range to try and achieve a coordinated F+DB+TB strike.

Leaving out the DB, have I read somewhere else that the maximum possible CV strike range is 9?
If so, it would be possible to get an escorted Grace strike (in DB mode) out to 9 hexes, but that would be with TBC bombs (possibly 2x250kg)

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 3
Japanese adjusted assault: 8044 – good bonuses from the HQ units and preparation. The worry was that adjusted AV would be less than raw AV while the defenders got a bonus, but clearly that didn’t eventuate.
Allied adjusted defense: 2203
Japanese assault odds: 3 to 1 (fort level 3) – still about 2 attacks to go before Dimapur is captured, which might take a week each for enough supply to arrive.

I noticed on your attack in India that many of your LCUs show that they are restricted units from Korea and Manchuria when you bought them out you decided not to change their HQ affiliation?

No House Rules so why buy them out?

Hi bif, as RJ has answered, there are no house rules so troops can walk or catch the train anywhere from Manchukuo to Karachi.
The allies will be able to walk their troops the other way if the Indian Army can defend and equip itself.

I would like to reorganise the Kwantung Divs to new Army HQs but will probably never have the spare PP to do that.
Im planning to spend the next few months worth of PPs to buy out more Infantry Divs to use in the South East Areas.

You can switch the HQs to the Kwantung Army, then switch the unit to those HQ, then switch the HQ back to Southern Army. It is a lot cheaper that way.

That’s an interesting one, HQ 2nd Area Army or HQ 2nd Army could be used like that.

I dont think I’ll do it, but if I did it could be used to free up some or all of the 5x 30s Divs that are just leaving China for Thailand via the Indochina railways.
They’d then be able to board ships in about mid-March.
While that would provide the force needed to take Ceylon, I feel that the supply situation can’t support another big operation.
One or both of the Bengal and PNG fronts will need to be victorious first.

If PNG can be re-captured, Guadalcanal and Tulagi still have 1x USMC Div on each.
A big effort there in Q2 1943 to try and destroy those USMC positions could lead to a mid-43 carrier battle before too many Essex class CVs arrive.

Waiting for a haircut so have a bit of time to ponder the politics of this IJA command structure post the full occupation of China.

To free up Divs from what are now garrison, reserve and training theatres cheaply, the following could be used:

1. HQ 2nd Area Army (now in Bengal) subordinate to Kwantung Army could be used to buy out Manchukuo Divs at 25% of their sticker price.

2. HQ 8th Area Army (already at Lae) subordinate to GDA could buy out all GDA Divs, especially all the 40s Div fragments cheaply.

3. Burma Area Army will shortly arrive. If initially made subordinate to CEA (now the China-India Expeditionary Army) it could be used to buy out all CEA Divs cheaply.

As they would have said in Kwangchowan until recently, voilŕ!

Aircraft Ki-49-II KAI Helen advances R&D to 3/43. The research for the Helen transport is a fringe benefit. It will build at 30/month for a while then toggle on/off as demand requires. 30/month will allow all IJA transport units to fully replace ops losses and start building a small reserve pool.
Loss of AO Shiriya on Jul 13, 1942 is admitted
AG Shirasaki arrives at Osaka/Kyoto – historically a “reefer” or refrigerated cargo ship, this one was mostly used in the North East Area. Due to the small 355 capacity, I believe that means it can only rearm T-95 depth charges and not the T-95 Mod-2 or the Type 2s as they have 450 and 500 rearm cost respectively. As these AG can only rearm the small SC depth charges, they will be kept in small ports in the home islands to support a small SC “Cha” Div each.
CA Portland is reported to have been sunk near Kirakira on Dec 05, 1942
