In case you're unaware the only difference between the B6N2 and B6N2a is a radar. So it's not worth researching the 2a, unless you just want a few in the 'bank' for when the radar becomes active.

Yep planning to bank some 2a.
Hoping that the radar helps with ASW and night torpedo strikes once it is available.
I figure as the supply has been invested in the research factories already, best to accelerate the last model too.
To avoid spending more supply I’m not planning to change these 4x research factories once the 2a starts production.
As there will be 1x30 in production, I won’t build 150x 2a for more than a few months, then will mothball 4 factories at some point.
Probably once the pools have at least a few hundred spares for replacing late war losses.

I will check when the Grace is due, as I won’t need both Jill and Grace building...
It might be better to pay 120k more supply to move these 4x research factories to boost the late war fighter research, to try and have a bit of fun with them while the empire crumbles!

Late war fighters would be my choice. But the Grace only carries 250 kg bombs, I think that the Judy would be better if it can get through the CAP.

The big battle in Bengal gets a 2:1 with 40th US Div zeroed and retreated.
It looks like the Indian Div stayed in the hex while all other defenders were retreated.
They will be on the receiving end of a deliberate attack tomorrow. (The original shock attack orders were over-ruled by IGHQ, with a late change to deliberate attack).
The pocket is closing around Silchar. Will this trigger a withdrawal of I Aus Corps?

Attacking force 114540 troops, 1143 guns, 1082 vehicles, Assault Value = 4620
Defending force 21324 troops, 443 guns, 377 vehicles, Assault Value = 686
Japanese adjusted assault: 2293
Allied adjusted defense: 1137
Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1

14th Division
6th Division
12th Division
56th Division
4th Ind.Mixed Regiment
1st Division
2nd Tank Division
Korea Army
2nd Army
Defending units:
40th Infantry Division – zeroed during the battle
16th British Brigade – seemed to take heavy losses
23rd Indian Division – I think this unit stayed in the hex while the others retreated.
23rd British Brigade – also seemed to take heavy losses.
25th Indian Mountain Gun Regiment
26th Indian Mountain Gun Regiment
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 62,37 (near Dimapur)
Japanese Shock attack – this was the sideshow, but opening the hexside provides options to reinforce the northern route to Tezpur. It will also allow 55th Div units to move directly to Dimapur from across the river. All 55th Div units haven’t been in the same hex since the 55th Cavalry Regt was destroyed a year ago. I still don’t have the spare PP to change the HQ of 144th Infantry Regt, but the 55th Div will all move to Dimapur to perform a rear guard / reserve role.
Attacking force 16678 troops, 229 guns, 185 vehicles, Assault Value = 641 – this raw AV needs to be increased significantly before another deliberate attack is tried here. Two infantry Divisions and more Tank Regts are available to move here from Dimapur. That still doesn’t feel like enough though. As the priority is to capture Silchar and Comilla, this end of the front might need to stay on the defensive for a while longer. This move might cause the allies to reinforce this area though, so one more Infantry Div might move slowly to cross the river as backup for the 51st Div.
Defending force 16376 troops, 191 guns, 237 vehicles, Assault Value = 623
Japanese adjusted assault: 16
Allied adjusted defense: 2221
Japanese assault odds: 1 to 138
Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(+) – GEN Slim must be nearby, possibly at Tezpur.
Attacker: shock(+)
Japanese ground losses: losses are better than expected, mostly light tanks and trucks. The Type 2 Medium tank held up well.
58 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 6 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 23 disabled
Vehicles lost 43 (6 destroyed, 37 disabled)
Allied ground losses:
102 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 11 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled
Assaulting units:
112th Infantry Regiment – ordered to move across the river to Dimapur
15th Tank Regiment – small TOE, not a good unit for attacking big stacks
4th Tank Regiment – only light tanks, so also not a good unit for attacking big stacks
51st Division – will stay here, slowly recovering from the failed attack about a month ago
11th Tank Regiment – will stay here and try to conduct field repairs on the disabled tanks
21st Mortar Battalion - stay
23rd Army - stay
55th Mountain Gun Regiment – back to Dimapur
Defending units:
20th Indian Division
75th Indian Brigade
Kowloon Brigade
14th British Brigade

OPERATIONAL REPORT FOR Mar 04, 43
TF 55 can not completely unload troops at Ponape – 20cm guns… one ship TF is now docked but still no joy. They will wait until the port facilities are expanded around them to size 2 and see if that helps.
TF 410 can not completely unload troops at Ponape – unable to dock but will also wait. Once the last guns are ashore, 3rd Special Base Force will combine by adding the 6th Yokosuka SNLF to the 3rd IJN Special Cst Gun Bn.
SS S-35 is reported HIT
SS Thresher is reported HIT
1LT Wakamatsu, Y. of 77th Sentai is credited with kill number 7
1LT Iwaya I. of 77th Sentai is credited with kill number 15 – but was then shot down and is reported MIA… Fingers are crossed that he finds his way out of the jungle over coming weeks.
G3M3 Nell from 701 Ku K-1 has spotted an Allied SC at 114,137 an Allied SC is reported HIT – probably PT boats in the Tulagi hex.
SS S-35 is reported HIT
SS Thresher is reported HIT

2 x Ki-57-I Topsy transporting 38th Road Const Co to Merauke
Nagoya expands airfield to size 7 – home of the 51st Air Division and currently 5x training units
Oak Harbor expands airfield to size 6
Krasnoyarsk expands airfield to size 5
Aircraft A6M8 Zero advances R&D – to 3/45 and closing at 12% per day.
SC CHa-7 taken out of commission to begin refit at Tsu – a 4 day upgrade to swap a 13.2mm MG for a 25mm AA gun. These CHa SCs don’t get any more upgrades, so keep the T95 depth charges for the rest of the war. Low capability boats, but they will keep patrolling shallow waters in 3-4 boat Divisions and try to make a nuisance of themselves.
SC CHa-8 taken out of commission to begin refit at Tsu
SC CHa-9 taken out of commission to begin refit at Tsu
12th Base Force takes replacements from Kendari – transfer from Guam is complete.
SS RO-105 arrives at Kobe – to 8th Fleet, SEAF
Loss of xAK Teiryu Maru on Mar 04, 1943 is admitted
xAK Mutsuyo Maru arrives at Fukuoka – to Sasebo to upgrade to TK-C
TK Gyoshin Maru arrives at Nagoya – 8150 capacity Type 1 TM, awaiting escorts before moving to the DEI. There is a bit of excess fuel building up at Soerabaja that I could do with some more TKs to move back to Manila initially. All the big TKs are still fully employed on the Singapore-Fukuoka route, so draining Soerabaja will probably be a job for a Std A TK task force one a few more of them arrive.
TK British Aviator is reported to have been sunk near Karachi on Sep 18, 1942

In case you're unaware the only difference between the B6N2 and B6N2a is a radar. So it's not worth researching the 2a, unless you just want a few in the 'bank' for when the radar becomes active.

I will check when the Grace is due, as I won’t need both Jill and Grace building...

Current estimates for IJN carrier bombers and their research factories:

- B6N2 Jill, will start building on about the 10th of March, so in 4-5 days tops. The 1x30 B5N2 production factory will change to B6N2 and upsize to 60, so that will take 2 months to repair before Jills start rolling off the production line in a meaningful way.
- B6N2a Jill should then be available by early Aug 1943. As the Grace won't be far away by then, the plan now is to change the 4x B6N2a research factories to late war IJAAF fighters. Two each to add to Ki-94 and Ki-201 research. These factories will move to Army fighters as previously the Tojo research factories moved on to Navy fighters (two each to A7M3-J and J7W1).
- B7A1 Grace should be available by early Jan 1944. Historically the plan was to replace all carrier based DB and TB with the multi-role Grace, but I will probably keep a few D4Y4 Judy with the 800kg bomb on the carriers. Those that are still afloat by then!

The inevitable occurs one hex off Port Moresby.
Lucky it was an S-boat as the damage is relatively light. Minimal damage really as some of the system and engine damage was already there.
Also "lucky" it was Zuikaku rather than a CVL. Zuikaku needs an upgrade soon anyway, so this provides another reason to return to Japan.
A few more days are needed to extract the three IJA Divisions from Port Moresby. They are loading over the beach in amphib mode then they will have to run the sub gauntlet, but will hug the coast to try and avoid most of them.

Maybe get some decent ASW TFs to the PM area to protect your ships.

I know that!

By now you should have ASW platforms with decent crew experience, put on some decent Captains, make sure that they have Type 95-2 DCs if not type 2s, give them decent Naval and ASW searches. Going coastal might help but the enemy might also put minefields in as ell.

The IJN DDs should have all taken their first upgrade by now, so most do have Type 2 or 95-2 depth charges.
They should also all have aggressive skippers with 65+ naval skill. I might have missed a few but not many.

I think the key missing ingredient is still the lack of surface search radars on the IJN DDs.
Some have air search radars but they need radars that can spot periscopes at night for ASW duty.

Another factor is the relative shortage of DDs.
There aren’t many “spare” DDs to form dedicated ASW task forces, unless I reduce the number embedded within air and surface combat task forces.
That USN sub dodged 9x Shiratsuyu class DDs that were in the Zuikaku TF, but that is only a 1:1 ratio of DD : capital ships.
There was one separate ASW task force in the hex plus there is one more in the Port Moresby hex.

Lots of the smaller CM just upgraded to E which should help with numbers, but I’m not expecting them to be of much use unless they also get radar at some point.

I just got side-tracked looking at aircraft research with the last B6N2 Jill factory now at 98%, and checked how long I need to wait until Frank arrives.
All research factories were setup in the first few days of the war, including 12x30 on Frank-A.
The formula says that the average start date for Frank-A research should be 23 May 43.

The Tsu factory just went to 28(2) today, so it could start research 2 months ahead of that estimate, with others likely to start well before 23 May 43 as well.
I’ve seen others comment that this further accelerates research which makes sense, as when the production start date comes forward the repairs finish quicker.
It wouldn’t surprise me if all factories are fully repaired by late May 1943, but there might still be a few stragglers by then.
Without engine bonus, the pre-war estimate was for Frank-A to start production after only 2 months of research in late July 1943. With full engine bonus it would halve that to start production in late June 1943.

I will probably let 3x30 Frank-A go into production to produce 90/month, leaving 9x30 to research the Frank-R.
That should see the Frank-R start production in October 1943, at which point they will all enter production at 360/month.
That will quickly upgrade all front line Sentai and start building up a large stockpile to keep the Frank-R in action until the late war toys are available.

With Frank-A arriving in mid-1943, it should play a big role in knocking down allied aircraft in order to help maintain the current 3:1 VP ratio until 1 Jan 1944.

Finally cracked 50k points, but still well short of the 4:1 needed for auto-victory in 1943.
I can't see a way to get that many points quickly so won't try to.
The ratio sits at 3.45:1 which is about as high as it has been, the trick now is to try and maintain it until 1 Jan 44.

The RAF suffered today with the veteran 11th and 77th Sentai Tojos shredding Blenheim / Hurricane raids on IJA troops in the open for no aircraft losses. Pilot casualties for Japan today were only 1x WIA and 1x KIA.
The gap in Allied : Japan aircraft loss points is slowly getting wider.

Good news on the B6N2 Jill research/production front.
The 4th B6N2 research factory brings production forward to start now but can still be changed to B6N2a research.
The B5N2 production factory here will convert to build B6N2s.

No sooner than saying that, I changed the B5N2 factory to B6N2 and the B6N2 research factory was immediately "locked in" as a production factory!
Luckily I saved the game first so can go back and change the factories in the other order.

Yes. Something you should always do when mucking about in the 'industry' screen.

About 40 naval support squads from HQ 6th Fleet helped unload the 20cm guns over the level 1 port at Ponape.
This allows the 3rd Special Base Force to form by combining the subordinate Coastal Gun Bn with the SNLF.
Well worth it to bring another few Bns worth of naval support, support and engineer squads onto the map.

Such a unit deserves a RADM to command it, but it's not worth the 7 PP that would take!

One option for relatively cheap points is to invest some supply into airbase construction in China.
Especially Chungking which is worth 400 points/airfield point and Chengtu at 200 points / AF point.
When maxed to size 9 that is 5400 victory points between them.

I haven't checked all bases, but I've just noticed that Sining and Lanchow can provide 100 points / AF point.
Now that Changsha has just reached AF size 9 the 51st and 52nd Road Const Cos will march to one base each to slowly build up those airfields.
When maxed they will add another 700 victory points. Those VP could be crucial come 1 Jan 44, or it could just be a waste of supply!

Most other airfields in China are worth 20 points / AF point, so nowhere near as good a return on supply investment.
Engineers are building other airfields just at key points, usually on railways and in rough or urban terrain.

Hiya Jdsrae,

I've been away from the forums for a bit over the summer, but am getting back into the swing of things. Forgive me for not keeping up with your game, but I find your situation to be roughly equivalent of my own, with some interesting exceptions.

Can you point me to the series of pages wherein you besieged and captured Chungking and / or Chengtu? I'd like to see how and when you handled that.

Cheers.

If that was the 1st Battle of Santa Cruz just skip over that one...
The 2nd Battle of Santa Cruz was much more exciting.

G’day CB
My approach to China was to establish a front and keep pressure on everywhere. A bit slower than other AARs I’ve read.
I tried to capture some places like Wenchow early but if a quick attack failed I flipped all hexsides and left a “hex guard”.
I captured Kunming early with paras and then tried to block Chinese units moving to India.
I then captured Chengtu before working on Chungking which took about 6-7 big deliberate attacks about 10-14 days apart.
Cheers

Ah yes, I caught up with that part of the AAR. That was quite a beating you dealt to the allies. It is all fun and games, until the CV's start dropping like flies.

TK Kotai Maru arrives at Fukuoka – another Type-1 TM
61st Division Engineer Battalion arrives at Utsonomiya – these ginger beers were just given train tickets to move to Tokyo to form the 61st Division, but many of them were found in the gutters outside the seedy bar district of downtown Utsonomia that evening. As a 60s Division it “should” be in China with all of its 60s mates, but it will stay at Tokyo as the Home Islands reserve division. It is behind many other units on the priority list for PP to be spent on them.
The 70th, 71st and 104th Divs are waiting at Fusan to be bought out, along with 90th Infantry Regt (107th Div) and 9th Garrison Unit (108th Div).
The Guards Mixed Bde is also still at Tokyo in a reserve role, putting on a good show three times a day outside the palace in their ceremonial uniforms. The 1st Guards Div will form in 63 days but as it is assigned to Eastern Army it does need to be bought out so it can be used as a ready reaction force.
