Allied movement arrows pop up in Bengal. They are not going to make it easy to trap I Aus Corps.
Allied navies get frisky in SEAF with multiple CA/CL task forces bombarding SNLF Coys in their OPs on the small islands just north of Guadalcanal and Tulagi. IJNAF night Nell/Betty raids hit nothing but the allied ship crews wouldn’t have got much sleep.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Apr 09, 43
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack near Rambutyo at 103,120
E W-22
SS Harder is located by E W-22
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Air attack on TF, near Russell Islands at 113,136
I didn’t expect these strikes to fly as they had only just been set to night missions. In the past it seemed like the crews then took orders to change from day to night flying as an excuse to restart the clock on their “crew rest” requirements, but this proves to me that it is possible to fly night strikes within hours of the orders being given. Not that they hit anything, but this would have used up a bit of the CA/CL AA ammunition and should get the allies thinking twice about getting too close to Rabaul.
Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Night Naval bombardment of Russell Islands at 113,136
4x large allied surface combat task forces were spotted at Lunga yesterday, so this wasn’t a surprise, other than the base they chose to bombard. RADM Tanaka is itching to fight this sort of task force with his 4xCA 6xDD command, but the allies have a lot of fighters and dive bombers at Lunga now so it would be dangerous to send IJN task forces too far forward. In response, the IJN Combined Fleet has moved multiple surface combat task forces including BB/CA/CL/DD forward to Rabaul from Manus with a CA TF moving from Truk. Those task forces at Rabaul have been spotted by allied patrols, so it might make them pause and think twice about moving further up the island chain towards Shortlands.

Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 71356 troops, 859 guns, 1590 vehicles, Assault Value = 2925
Defending force 734 troops, 38 guns, 42 vehicles, Assault Value = 2
Japanese adjusted assault: 524

Non Combat: 26 destroyed, 5 disabled
Guns lost 19 (17 destroyed, 2 disabled)
Vehicles lost 17 (10 destroyed, 7 disabled)
Units retreated 2
Assaulting units:
2nd Army – fake to pursue. An allied force is spotted already moving into this hex from the NE, so most of this stack will stay in place to try and keep control of this hex.
2nd Tank Division
3rd Tank Division – will try to race SE into Silchar, but movement is already spotted coming the other way so the Indian Armd Bde at Silchar must be trying to link up with the relief force.
1st Division – stay, it has level 2 field forts which could come in handy in the next few days.
6th Division – 100% prepared for Silchar so will try to move to Silchar, but the Indian Armd Bde will probably arrive first making that attempted move pointless.
8th Division - stay
9th Division - stay
56th Division - stay
10th Medium Field Artillery Regiment - stay
1st RF Gun Battalion - stay
10th RF Gun Battalion - stay
Defending units:
26th Indian Mountain Gun Regiment
12th Indian Heavy AA Regiment
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Silchar (59,39)
Japanese Bombardment attack – only 3-4 artillery units that had supply in the white, to provide the raw AV figures. I am guessing that the entire Aus I Corps will attempt to withdraw now that they are at risk of being cut off, but there is insufficient supply here right now to put another deliberate attack in. If supply does get into the white an attack will be ordered, otherwise Silchar could be occupied without another shot being fired.
Attacking force 2707 troops, 268 guns, 101 vehicles, Assault Value = 3923
Defending force 35215 troops, 596 guns, 781 vehicles, Assault Value = 887
Allied ground losses:
53 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 8 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Defending units: at least one of these units is moving NW, maybe all of them.
6th Australian Division
267th Armoured Brigade
7th Indian Division
9th Australian Division
I Australian Corps
2/13th Field Regiment
23rd Indian Mountain Gun Regiment

The problem with the Oscar is twofold, firepower and air-frame. The firepower at least is centered, and this helps, but she really needs cannon. The air-frame is a constant deficiency... weak.

That being said I still produce a small number in my game, and probably will do so always.

Good plane, but its SR3 level will not keep it in combat too long.

Yep, Oscar’s war is nearly over.
They’ve never been any good vs allied bombers, and are now coming up against armoured and more durable allied fighters.
The Oscar factories are in mothballs until the cannon armed Oscar-IV can be produced. It probably won’t be much use against allied bombers either but I want to try it and see how it goes. The SR1 might allow it to add some clutter to the skies by the time it starts flying.

Here's a summary of the IJAAF Fighter force at the moment.

It’s the best the IJN has right now, but George 2 won’t be far off, maybe 3 months until it starts production.
To try and keep more serviceable I’ve dropped CAP to 30% with 30% rest.
I assume that will allow up to 40% to scramble depending on the size of any incoming raid.
Range is being kept as short as possible, typically 0,1 or 2 depending on whether there is a nearby airbase to mutually support.

That SR1 with its maneuverability will help the Oscar perform in the low level CAP role.

As Ranger Joe said, they are useful in layered CAP in the lowest band....I think they are worth building and using in some numbers in other roles:

1. ESCORT: Later models have armor, and good range. Good enough for Bomber escort
2. LOW LEVEL NAV: 2x250kg bombs is a fair loadout. Also will make a good Kami at some point

I do agree, if you're asking the Oscar to shoot down Allied planes, good luck.....it can only annoy Allied
Bombers

Would also agree in mid-43 it's only a supporting model....your late-model Tojos are a better fighter

I hope those Ic in service are training groups only? At this point pilots should not be going into harms way in that old Oscar model.

Only advice I'd give from the training programme suggested is to dump all the pilots out of the Rufes and use them just for training fighter pilots

I wouldn't use the Oscar for a LowNav/Kami role in the first instance, I don't think it's really got the speed to be effective. Better to over-produce the Frank and use those instead.

Absolutely agree on the Low CAP and escort functions, however.

Also I like to add that all but one 9 plane unit of Rufe's may convert to LBA Japanese fighters, at least with PDU on.

Thanks all, the War Council has been influential!

I can see Oscar being useful for a little while yet in the escort role. Maybe low CAP / LRCAP just below Tojos until it can change to Frank over Tojo.
I think the Oscar IIb arrives 5/43 with armour, so I’ll make a few of them. Maybe just 30/month.

I’d lost track of the 70+ experience Rufe pilots in NEAF. They will be “harvested” and replaced with 50+ experience rookies.
I don’t mind having some Float Fighters as a disbanded AV or JNAF coy can support them at a dot base rather than needing a runway.
Once the perimeter shrinks I will probably upgrade them to land based fighters.

Supply at Tokyo got to 884k before the Sasebo-Rangoon #2 supply convoy started loading. It has 40k supply capacity from 8x Aden xAK.
There are two of these convoys moving supply to Burma and collecting resources from Singapore on the way back to Japan.
When one is at Sasebo the other is close to Rangoon and they’ve been running non-stop since Rangoon was relatively secure.
The #1 on this convoy route has just left Rangoon passing Victoria Point, hugging the coast on the way to Singapore.

The IJA stack in this attack didn’t have full supply, but each unit did have about 75% of their requirement.
Interestingly there was no supply (-) for the attackers.
Based on this, the Silchar stack will attack tomorrow to try and damage the I Aus Corps as they are trying to move out.
1st Tank Div has just arrived at Silchar so will attack without field forts but the rest of the stack are behind level 2 forts.
Disruption is <10 and fatigue is generally in the 20s. A leadership (+) from HQ CEA and a supply (-) for the enemy would be handy.

The other fairly niche use is for bases where the runway is out of action, and being kept out of action by Allied milk runs.

I tend to keep the floatplanes around till the night fighter squadrons roll around (effectively mid '44). It's a role that suits them well. They're a good token deterrent, they free up a more capable airframe for daytime CAP and large losses wont be much concern.

Any plans to switch over to the Rex for the floatplanes? I've taken the plunge, but I suspect it will be wasted supply for only a marginally better airframe...

I had planned on making some Rex.
My 1x30 Rufe factory auto upgraded to A6M5 by accident but the pre-war plan was to change the Rufe factory to Rex.
Rex won’t be a game changer so probably a waste of supply now that it can go to A6M8 for free.

Silchar captured!
It looks like the capture of I Aus Corps and 2x Divs was worth about 1000 VP.

There are a LOT of allied units in NE India now. 18x units at Tezpur and another 18x units in the Jungle Rough hex on the road next to it.
A frontal attack on Tezpur is probably a very bad idea, so the IJA might need to try and unhinge them by manoeuvre.

Remember with regards to the 12th and 15th IJA Divs:

1)They should be at a large base.

2)With lots of supply.

3)As far away from Allied forces as possible.

4)With as much support as you may get in their location.

Let’s just say that their conditions for recuperation will be less than ideal!

1. Once Comilla is clear they will move to a base each on the Arakan Coast, to defend against allied landings while they recover.
That will allow the elite 5th Division to move forward and recombine.

2. This is the IJA so they will never have “lots” of supply!

3. They will be kept out of contested hexes until they recover.

4. No HQ units will stay with them as they are needed on the front line, but some base forces may help with their support squads.

Comilla captured!
The railway from Chittagong to Ledo is secure.
25th Army with 2x Divs and 3x Tank Regts gets a 9:1 ratio against 18th Indian Div.
The 14th Tank Regt (light tanks) was smashed because I forgot to keep it out of the close combat.

On the Silchar-Tezpur road a US Cav Regt was destroyed and 9th Aus Div took heavy casualties but escaped by forces retreat.
The VP ratio is nearly 3.5:1 again, but that’s still about 9000 points away from auto victory.

Looks to me like you're poised to effect a breakthrough in India. There're are quite a few VP to flip between Dacca and Calcutta and environs. Get those Arm units to hold open the gaps for the ID's, and go to town.

There are some big allied stacks on this image so I’m not confident of a breakthrough.
Hopefully the staff get some time to prepare an enemy situation summary this weekend so I can guide them to develop an attack plan...

Cactus Air Force strikes back, Corsair sweeps score big against A6M5 CAP.
Total pilot losses were 14x KIA and 14x WIA, mostly these would be IJN land based fighter pilots with 70s experience... not good for morale!
Then Dauntless and Avenger escorted by Wildcats heavily damage Munda airfield.
We will see how George and Friends (lots of A6M5c) go on LRCAP tomorrow.

In better news, IJAAF bombers hit targets in the open in Bengal with mostly no flak and no air defenders.

George gets into action, not doing amazingly but it held up better than the A6M5.
The B17E was shot down by a George.
I think the Corsair sweeps came in at 25k’ so I might push the George up to meet them and have the A6M5/5c layered just below them.
The Wildcats didn’t do well, but the Corsairs are a tough opponent.
A few more Zero units are moved forward from Rabaul. Morale in the 6th Kukotai is trashed so they will rotate back to Rabaul to recover.

LRCAP is flying from Shortlands and Torokina, with CAP range 1 flying from Vella Lavella.

Total pilot casualties today were 14x KIA, 6x WIA.
We will keep up this battle of attrition for another few days and see whether the allies stick it out too.

Ouch, those experinced IJN pilot losses can hurt. What altitude did the corsairs sweep at? If they were flying at high altitude, you might wanna consider setting ur CAP low like 3-5k and forcing his sweeps to fight you where you have a maneuver advantage.

I’ll have to check but I think the Corsairs came in at 25k.
I might give the low layered CAP thing a try to mix things up.

It’s mostly 60s and 70s exp pilots getting shot down.
Only the CV fighter units have 81+ experience pilots. They’ve been topped up to 133% roster with 70s exp pilots while they are ashore.
The land based units are mostly 70s exp but reinforcement pilots are in their 60s.
When pilots get to 81 exp I transfer them to CV units. 4 qualified yesterday and I expect a few more today.
I’ve got a few hundred 60s exp fighter pilots in Japan based units that will replace these losses.

I could see that the Wildcats are now outclassed, so fingers crossed the Corsairs start to need some maintenance.

Morning Air attack on Munda , at 111,134
Weather in hex: Moderate rain
Raid spotted at 40 NM, estimated altitude 26,000 feet. I just noticed that the 18th JNAFU at Munda is missing its radar. It is back at Shortlands with 2x searchlights and 29x support squads. Munda has a level 2 port now so I will try and fast transport them forward to help with raid detection, but that will take about a week to do.
Estimated time to target is 15 minutes
A6M5 Zero x 63
A6M5c Zero x 8
N1K1-J George x 12
A6M5 Zero: 1 destroyed
A6M5c Zero: 1 destroyed
Allied aircraft
F4U-1 Corsair x 18
F4U-1 Corsair: 2 destroyed
CAP engaged:
251 Ku S-1 with A6M5 Zero (6 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 20000 , scrambling fighters between 0 and 20000. These altitude settings are giving the Corsair the dive. I checked manoeuvre bands and all of these aircraft seem to have the same manoeuvre rating from 0 to 20, so layered CAP <10 probably won’t be much different to layered CAP <20. Just to try something different I have ordered the layers to 5, 7 and 9k tomorrow.
6th Ku S-1/A with A6M5 Zero (0 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 20000 , scrambling fighters between 0 and 20000.
201 Ku S-1 with N1K1-J George (12 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 21000 , scrambling fighters between 0 and 21000. I set the George to 21k on the failed assumption that the allies would come in at 20k.
253 Ku S-1 with A6M5 Zero (0 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 20000 , scrambling fighters between 0 and 20000.
Kaga-1 with A6M5 Zero (0 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling) – this might make the allies think that IJN CVs are nearby, or they may already know from SigInt that the CVs are back in Japan.
Group patrol altitude is 16000 , scrambling fighters between 0 and 16000.
Shokaku-1 with A6M5c Zero (0 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 20000 , scrambling fighters between 0 and 20000.
Zuikaku-1 with A6M5 Zero (0 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 20000 , scrambling fighters between 0 and 20000.

Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 6 disabled
Also attacking 503rd Parachute Regiment ... another unit spotted. Usually paras don’t stand up well to tanks, so it would be good to get rid of this unit so it doesn’t try any long range airborne shenanigans into Burma.

What was your CAP setup vs the Corsairs?

On the whole, I think you need to be happy at a nearly 1:1 trade against them.

In summary, George at 21k', A6M5/5c at 20k'. Mix or LRCAP range 0 and CAP with range set to 1,2 or 3.
Changed that for the next day to George at 9k', A6M5c at 7k', A6M5 at 5k' for no noticeable difference.
