I do that sometimes, but with the number of moving parts in Bengal at the moment I'm bound to miss something!
The extra few days should be useful to allow more supply to land at Chittagong and the Tankies to bash some tracks.

Correct, called Brigadier without the General on the end.
If you know one well enough you could try calling them "Senior Colonel" over a beer!

Status: offline 		I used both terms Brigadier and Brigadier General. It sounds like the Japanese had their Lt Generals much like the US Navy did with their Rear Admirals - Upper Half and Lower Half.

In an IJA Division the Infantry Regts could be grouped together to form a multiple columns in an advance, but not having a BRIG equivalent rank they’d be commanded by either one of the COLs or a MGEN.

Anecdotally it was the British Parliament that told their army that they had too many generals at the end of WW1.
The British Army’s solution was to stop calling Brigadiers Generals.
No change to personnel numbers, just less being reported to Parliament as being of General rank!

Interesting - sounds like the same ambivalence I experienced in the civil service when I was a Regional Manger - greater responsibilities but still a Manager, not a Director. But I wasn't much for the ceremonial/perk stuff anyway as long as the pay was decent.

Status: offline 		I think once you get the Frank online, covert the Tojo factories over to the Frank. That might make you feel a bit more comfortable getting more Frank factories moved to R&D the Frank-r model, but if it doesn't, I'd still do it anyways.

Frank is one of those airframes that you'll want deep pools of, as it can do a lot (CAP, escort, sweep, kamikaze) in a way that most IJA aircraft can't.

I've flip-flopped on how many Tojos to keep building a few times to be honest.
They are still doing a good job but they will be obsolete once Frank can replace them.

Plan A for aircraft production was to convert all outdated production factories to the newer models to keep as many research factories for research, but then when I estimated how much supply that would use it made me think about the opposite extreme, of trying to conserve as much supply as possible by not changing aircraft factories.

In practice I am going to end up somewhere in the middle, for example, I have converted all but one Oscar factory to George, plus a few others.
I do like the idea of converting 1 of the size 60 Tojo factories to Frank as that would be a relatively small adjustment.
I have also decided to build 30 more Helen bombers per month (from 30 to 60), so they will use up the engines that would have been used by those Tojos.

That will mean that I build 100 Frank-A per month and leave 10x size 30 research factories on the Frank-R.
With engine bonus they will move forward 1 month every 5 days, or 6 months/month, that should get Frank-R into production in Sep/Oct 1943 which would be about 2 years ahead of schedule. Frank-R production will then be 400/month with all research factories moving to production.

A but of interweb research shows that Tojo production was stopped in late 1944 to focus on Frank, so that could happen a year earlier in this parallel universe.

Game wise this A/C may be viable to the end game. It is an SR1 A/C with a very good clime rate. It is definitely useful in defending an airfield, and from what I've read here may be used against the Soviets until the end of the war.

The same reason why the US Navy had enlisted men as pilots, they were limited as to how many officers that were allowed. For one class from the US Naval academy, only half of the graduating class was given the chance to be Regular officers.

Status: offline 		43rd Division reforms at Torokina. LGEN Uchida was already in command of the Infantry Group and with decent stats he will stay in command.
Lots more supply is needed at Torokina now to help this Div take replacements.

Total replacements available, once supply is delivered, includes:
+1x Infantry Regt
+2x HMG Coys
+1x AT Gun Bn, including upgrade to 47mm guns
+1x 70m Howitzer Battery of 6 guns
+1x Motorised Support Bn
+2x Support Bns

The challenge will be getting all of these replacements to Torokina in time to allow them to train and improve their experience to 50 before the allies invade.

16th and 52nd Divs are in reserve at Manus Island. They have 82 and 57 experience respectively.
IGHQ are thinking about rotating the 52nd Div forward and withdrawing 43rd Div to give it time to take replacements and conduct some training.

21st Div (69 experience) is at Shortlands, with the plan to use Bougainville as a delay position to inflict some damage on the allies if (when) they advance to the vicinity of Munda and Vella Lavella. The 62nd Infantry Group is also at Shortlands, with only 9 days until the remaining 42nd Div units arrive. 62nd IG could also be withdrawn to allow the 42nd Div to train up.

To keep these new Divs at big bases with supply, 43rd Div might train at Manus while 42nd Div trains at Truk.

46th Div Tank Bn is about to move forward from Truk to Buna to allow the 46th Div to form, but if it has a similar TOE to this it might also need to be withdrawn to allow replacements and training.

Tokyo has 1.4M supply now, so once the additional troops arrive in 9 days time about 100k of supply will be sent south with them to start the process.

Status: offline 		This is the worm as at 1 Jun 43, with some guesswork as to what might happen out to 1 Jan 44.

If the allies keep scoring 600 points per month they will get to about 20400 points by 1 Jan 44.
They will probably score more than that as they have more and better of everything rolling of the production lines.
The VP ratio can drop as long as it stays above 3, so if the allies only keep scoring at 600 per month the average score required by Japan is only about 850 per month. A score for Japan of about 61300 on 1 Jan 44 could be enough for auto victory, but something closer to 65k might be needed.

To achieve that, the IJN will attempt to restrict allied points by keeping most of the Combined Fleet as a threat in the Manus-Truk area.
If allied invasions are spotted in the Solomons or the Marshalls/Gilberts, the Combined Fleet and land based air will respond and try to strike from distance, but won’t go “all in”.
CA/CL/DD task forces may contest on the surface, but it may be best to save the BBs to counter any allied move further back, like the Marianas.
Losing CVs and BBs in forward areas would gift big points to the Allies and be counter-productive.

For the IJA, the focus will be on picking up a few more points in Bengal, but apart from capturing Rangpur and some allied troops in that area, there might not be a need to try and capture Calcutta.
The General staff are also turning their mind to defensive operations which could see some Divisions move to under protected areas.

Status: offline 		I'd prepared the details for this slide years ago, but I put the current game Strat Map under it to show a comparison between how this game is going vs the real war. It shows that Japan isn't as far ahead as the points ratio indicates.
The Allies are only behind the real war schedule in a few places, but they could easily catch that up.
The big difference in this game is that there was a "reverse Midway" around Santa Cruz, but the Essex class CVs will start arriving soon to replace the 4x USN CVs lost there.




In this game, OP WATCHTOWER occurred almost on schedule, from memory.
OP DRAKE must have been cancelled once Port Moresby was captured.
OP CLEANSLATE is overdue, being blocked at the moment by the less than mighty 4th Indpt SNLF Coy!

OP TOENAILS is due this month. There is a lot of allied recon being flown from vic Tulagi which suggests this op could be launched soon. Allied recon is also regularly spotting the line of Truk-Ponape-Kusaie-Nauru, so looking at this now they could be planning to advance directly north from Tulagi and bypass the Marshalls-Gilberts.

HQ SEAF at Rabaul is in range of 43rd Div at Torokina and issued it with brand new 47mm AT guns today, so 43rd Div will now just stay there to take replacements and train up.
52nd Div could move from Manus to Ponape to reinforce the IJN defenders there instead of replacing 43rd Div at Torokina. Allied recon will spot them when they land, which might force them to reconsider an attack on Ponape.
If the Allies don't move towards Shortlands by the end of this month, 21st Div will be withdrawn from there as the 42nd Div will have combined by then.

OP LANDCRAB is also slightly overdue now.
IGHQ will start to withdraw some troops from the Aleutians, back to the Kuriles, in case the Allies try something in NORPAC.

OP GALVANIC didn't occur until late 1943, but IGHQ expect that the Allies will try something in CENPAC well before the end of 1943.

Japan is currently most vulnerable in two places:

I crunched some numbers before this war started to try and understand how much supply LCUs need to come up to strength.
One supply point is needed per load cost of each device.
As a rule of thumb, A and B grade IJA Infantry Divs have a load cost up to about 18k when full. 8th Div in this image is at 102% TOE.
If 43rd Div had to grow from zero it would need up to 18k Manpower points, 18k Supply points, about 1600 armament points and 600ish vehicle points. Different Div TOE differ slightly depending on the type of artillery and if they have motorised support or any tanks.
But 43rd Div is already at 74% of full TOE, so it probably only needs about 4k supply to fill out.
It can train in the jungle that it is going to fight in, and it is already where it is needed.
If left too late to move into position it would risk a Battle of the Bismarck Sea scenario.

The plan was always to move the 40s Divs to 8th Area Army. The Infantry Groups that they grow from were moved early to counter the Allied threat once they captured Port Moresby and the lower Solomons. The main thing that has slowed the Allies was losing 4xCV, but having all these boots on the ground would also be having a deterrent effect that might be slowing the Allies down. If there were less IJA troops in SEAF they wouldn't have to prepare as many troops for the next landing. If the Allies had of won that CV battle they would be well into OP CARTWHEEL by now.

I did think about flying 61st Div from Tokyo to Hokkaido but it will stay at Tokyo for now and move if it has to.
I have come up with some cunning plans to move a few Divs back from SEAF to plug some gaps around the perimeter of the Empire.
I'll post the summary of IJA Div locations separately, but 61st Div is unlikely to leave Japan so it is going to start filling out. It's currently at 72% TOE (current 8k load cost) so it will only need about 3k supply to fill out.

I've also reviewed the current locations and future arrival dates of Independent Mixed Brigades. They will all be crucial in helping to delay the Allies in selected locations. The IM Bdes won't stand up against Allied Divisions, but their job will just be to delay.

If the Allies still had all their CVs I would be more worried about a deep strike, but I don't think they will have the CVs to support something like that until at least July 1943. By Sept 1943 they will be very dangerous with more CV, CVL and lots of CVE starting to arrive.
The RN still has HMS Victorious and Hermes somewhere.
With so many USArmy Divs in India, the USN CVs could also show up in the Indian Ocean.
The IGHQ Intelligence Staff really don't have much of a clue!

Hokkaido/Sakhalin will have some more troops before July/Aug 1943, but based on how many toys the Allies get in the 2nd half of 1943 I expect plenty of action in the Pacific. AV is still a chance, but to improve those chances it will need the war gods to favour the IJN in the anticipated late 1943 CV action. If the IJN can avoid a big CV clash in 1943 it might be too late for the Allies to get the VP ratio below 3:1.

Status: offline 		I thought about looking for strategic bombing targets, but I got sidetracked looking at my grandpa's service record. Not the first time this has happened!
His overseas service included the following, mostly in workshop units, which the game calls "support" squads, although he would have been in a "motorised support" squad in the M.E.
This sidetrack led to some interesting info on KPM troopships.

Middle East: Jan 41 to Mar 42.
Driver in 9th Div Mobile Laundry and Forward Decontamination Unit, then 2/3rd Army Workshop (part of 1 Aus Corps).
Jan 41 embarked overseas convoy to the Middle East on “Aquitania” the big and fast xAP.
Apr 42 embarked in M.E. on “Salween” disembarked 4th Military District (Adelaide). Salween is in the game as an xAK, Euro-K class which is not convertible to xAP.

New Guinea: Aug 43 to Mar 44.
Aug 43 Townsville to Port Moresby on “Duntroon” with 1st Aust. Watercraft Workshop. Duntroon is in game as an xAP Shire class, with 18k endurance.

There was a bit of that, the CPNAB in the detachments that start the war at various forward bases stands for "Contractors, Pacific Naval Air Bases".
From memory, they were working on "cost plus fixed fee" style contracts before they were withdrawn and later replaced by Seabees.

Aircraft P1Y1 Frances advances R&D – the 3x size 30 factories have been moved to P1Y2 research. The size 30 G3M3 Nell factory was converted to P1Y1. It will produce P1Y1 for a few months then be ready to switch to P1Y2. One of the P1Y2 factories will switch to production so that 60x P1Y2 are built per month. The other two research factories will be converted to late war fighter research.
