Status: offline 		This is the situation on the Outer Rim of 4th Fleet area of operations.

The enemy task force is 1xPG and the rest xAK as spotted by I-25 over the last two days. On the assumption that the enemy task force will try to flee south I-25 will move to intercept with patrol orders.
I-27 will try to intercept the damaged xAK which is spotted heading NW to Suva, currently on top of the “Fiji” label.

KB (Temporary VADM Yamaguchi) will head north to a patrol hex next to Funafuti with CA Div 5 (RADM Daigo) providing close support.

The 7/43 DD Shiratsuyu upgrade gives it a Type 22 surface search radar. That radar should be handy to help detect subs before they can get close to the CVs. That must be one of the first IJN ships to get the Type 22 radar. It’s a 30 day upgrade, so the CVs will need alternative DDs for the 6 weeks or so that the Shiratsuyus are moving to/from and refitting in Japan.

Status: offline 		Current situation in Bengal.

11th Army (20th and 27th Divs), 12th Army (5th and 6th Divs) and 13th Army (3rd Div) are providing a blocking force on the Ganges. Allied units spotted on the other side of the river are of roughly equal numbers, assumed to be based on a Corps HQ and a few Divs each. The Allies have 35 units with 105k troops in reserve at Calcutta, which would be very dangerous if they moved against one of the defending IJA stacks. That might be the Allied R&R camp though, so a fair proportion of those Allied units might all be in rest mode recovering from recent battles.

HQ 25th Army is at Chittagong but most units are still at Dacca (2nd Guards, 18th and 35th Divs; 14th Light, 18th and 19th Tank Regts) resting and recovering disablements. 25th Army units are starting to move to Chittagong one by one to board ships and redeploy south.

HQ 15th Army is the main Rangpur attack force with HQ CEA and HQ Korea Army also in that stack.
11th, 13th, 14th and 17th Divs are in good shape in teh Rangpur hex with all at least 65% prepared for Rangpur.
10th Div (99/100 TOE) and 15th Div (80/94 TOE) are moving to join the Rangpur hex.

HQ 2nd Army with 12th Div (82/97 TOE) is currently defending against any Allied move from Darjeeling to interfere.

HQ 20th Army still has the 19th and 55th Divs with it, plus attachments.
36th Div is now only 3 days march away from joining 34th Div in the Jungle Rough, so is getting very close to arriving before the Allies get a chance to attack that 34th Div hex.

HQ 23rd Army remains with the resting 51st, 54th and 56th Divs at Tezpur.

9th Infantry will join the attack tomorrow.
Allied bombers target the 4th and 8th Divs that are moving to assist causing heavy disablement and some casualties.
LRCAP that I thought I’d set didn’t have targets, so of course they didn’t fly...

Defending units: 3x Divisions plus attachments, but the effective strength of just under 1000 is equivalent to about 2x full strength Divisions. Ideally the IJA would have about 3000 raw AV here before attacking, but I don’t think they will get that luxury.
The 1st Tank Army needs to clear that 14th Indian Div hex urgently, then reinforce this battle.
Kowloon Brigade – something from this hex is moving to the NW though, so if it all moves and fails in escaping through the 53rd Div hex then that will help the IJA to a big win and speed up the capture of Rangpur and destruction of this stack significantly.

Status: offline 		1st Tank Army gets clobbered by Allied bombers.
The LRCAP flew but was spread across a few hexes so couldn’t stop the bombers.
The attack result was another 1:2 due to high disablements from the Allied bombing and supply (-) from all the AA fire.

The 1st Bn Glosters was destroyed and more casualties caused to the Allied stack.

1st Tank Div needs a rest but 2nd and 3rd Tank Divs with 9th Div are ordered to attack again tomorrow, even if it means firing all remaining ammunition.
1st and 8th Infantry are only a few miles short of joining the hex so will attack the day after.

A probing George-1 sweep of Tassafaronga traded some George for Corsairs and Wildcats.
One more IJN pilot qualified for CV service as a result.

Status: offline 		This shows the enemy situation with all land combat Divisions that should be on the map or will arrive in 1943.
The no house rules (no PP to cross borders) is being countered by transfer of Aus and US Army Divs to India.
This was received from the Allied CIC about 10 days ago:
"Getting even hotter in India. I knew the no house rules would kick the action up several notches in Burma/India, but wow!"

Both sides are likely going to fight themselves to a stand-still in India over the next few months.
The Allies currently have at least 18 Divisions on the sub-continent.

The Allies will get more reinforcement Divs than the IJA can counter in 1944, so the high water mark will need to be drawn by late 1943 and then the initiative will pass to the Allies.

Status: offline 		Waves of Allied bombers strike at 1st Tank Army again, but this time the Tojo Nick combo does well against them, helping to keep ground casualties fairly light.
The real damage is done by increasing disruption and reducing supply though.
The Tank Army only get a 1:3 result with their deliberate attack, but two fresh IJA Divs just arrived to join the battle tomorrow.

Status: offline 		Aircraft score today was 43 to 21 in favour of Japan.
Pilot casualties were 7x KIA plus 8x WIA. The Allies would have lost more.
1LT Iwaya has recently returned from being either MIA or WIA so his experience dropped to 53. He’s been posted as an Advanced Training Instructor to 24th Sentai based at Soerabaja.
CPO Sakai is the only IJN pilot on the list, but he won’t be visible for much longer as the IJAAF is getting all the opportunities to score more victories while the KB will be kept safe for the next few months.

Status: offline 		Shot 1 at battle start. The 2x Armoured units have moved NW into the IJA 4th Div hex.
1st and 8th Divs are new arrivals so did not attack this turn.

Shot 2 is at the end of the bombardment phase. All artillery units shown here fired.

Shot 3 is when the 1:3 odds were announced. 9th Div and 2nd Tank Div did some damage to 14th Indian Div.
If the Allied infantry units don’t escape by tomorrow they should be destroyed when the fresh arrivals join the attack.

Status: offline 		As the troops on the ground can't identify what tanks they have been shooting at for the last few days, I opened an old Allied game to find out.
Both of these units have just moved into the 4th Div hex with only a few operational tanks each, but the 4th Div is still moderately disrupted so only has bombard orders.
Interesting to note that they are true Tank Regts and not just Armd Car Regts.
I don't know exactly what tanks they have now, but it is probably an upgrade from the Stuart Is.

I should have the turn back first thing in the morning. If the 14th Div stack can be destroyed then these two Tank Regts won't last long without reinforcement.

Defending force 1276 troops, 0 guns, 180 vehicles, Assault Value = 103 – I noticed that on the combat replay the combined strength was about 10, not 100. The truth is probably somewhere in between. I’ve also noticed that the mouseover figures for men/guns/vehicles are generally a large over-exaggeration when compared to the figures in these combat reports. I think the mouseover might include disabled devices too, while the combat reports may only include functioning devices. I don’t really have the time to dig into this deeper with forum searches, but I am starting to read the mouseover reports as conservative over-estimates and take the combat replay details as being more accurate.
That means that I assume this stack still has 100 functional AV. That may have been reduced by high disruption/fatigue etc to a figure close to 10, even though there might still be 100 working enemy tanks/combat squads in this hex. Probably a good thing for 4th Div to sit tight and wait for reinforcements to arrive, as if they attack they could break themselves charging at Stuart tanks with sticky bombs.

I am thinking about moving most of the Nick Sentai to be Advanced Training units for fighter pilots so that there are a similar number of well trained pilots coming through to fly all the replacement Franks.

Will try to get some details up on this in the next few days but it might need to wait until the weekend.
Japan has lost Akagi and one CVE, no BB, 2 CA and a few CL.
The Allies have lost 4x CV, lots of BB and a fair few Cruisers.
I’m aware that the Allies have their first Essex class CV and also have quite a few CVE now.

They will have enough strike power to do something somewhere before the end of 1943.

IV Indian Corps shock attacks across the river into a dug in IJA 2nd Army and gets a 1:2 result.
After the battle the raw AV is about 1000:650 in favour of Japan.
Rangpur has a single Indian Div defending so that base will be captured tomorrow.

Awesome, thanks! Sounds like you have a big advantage, though devil in some details.

There is a big range on Allied cruisers; sinking Dutch, Old RN cruisers doesn't do much strategically (especially since many RN are scheduled to withdraw anyway, so it's just points). The important cruisers are modern USN ones....

CVs and BBs in date order, then CA/CL/CLAA in date order.
Some of these might not actually be sunk due to FOW.

31 Allied DDs are reported sunk plus 2x DE and 20x APD (quite a few look to be 4-stacker DD-APD conversions).
Last time I looked that was only a small fraction of total Allied DDs. Fletchers are rolling off the production lines now.

Lessons learnt from this:
1. Don't use CL and AMC in amphibious task forces against CD guns (Abukuma plus 2 or 3 AMC).
2. Don't send KB with airgroup set to port/airfield attack orders into contested waters where the Allies might have their CVs (Akagi - with Kaga lucky to survive).
3. Don't send CA on speculative bombardments against places like Diamond Harbour (Kinugasa).

The other IJN losses were mostly the price that has to be paid to sink some Allied surface ships.
eg: the Battle in the Bay of Bengal 24-25 March 1942 traded 4x IJN DDs for Royal Sovereign and 9x Cruisers.
CVE Unyo was traded for 4x CV, 3x BB and 6x Cruisers. CV Zuikaku was nearly lost at the same time but limped back to Japan. Six months later she still has 34 days left in the yard.

KB will move to a position 9 hexes from both Tulagi and Ndeni to try and get an 8 hex strike if that Allied BB/CA task force moves back towards Ndeni.
Due to the ops points just used up refuelling, it will take 3 days for KB to get into position at cruise speed.

Allied Cruisers spotted.
Is this the rest of the RN Far East Fleet? Are there USN CVs near this unspotted?
The IJN has a CA Div at Cox’s Bazar and a BB Div at Moulmein, with lots of merchant ships moving supply to Chittagong and 25th Army troops back to Rangoon.
Emily long range patrols are flying form Port Blair and Betty patrols from Rangoon

Status: offline 		Anyway, enough of Navy stuff, back to the Army.

Rangpur was captured but the bad news it was vacant. The attack went in against zero defenders and destroyed level 6 forts that could otherwise have been occupied for free...
To offset that, the great news is that at least 53k of supply was captured. That is a huge bonus as instantly all IJA units within a few hexes are fully replenished with supplies.
I say at least, as I expect some moved out instantly to fill up the units nearby.

Current situation of the IJA main stacks in this area are shown in the next two images.

Status: offline 		IGHQ has tasked HQ CEA with developing options for the conduct of air mobile operations involving the IJA Raiding Force.

The yellow line shows Helen and Topsy-II transport normal range of 11 from Rangpur.
Dinah recon has been taking photos of Ranchi now for a few weeks, with nothing spotted on the ground.
Dinah recon will not look at the other bases to avoid giving the longer range game away, however the main aim of these operations could be to get the Allies to divert troops from around Calcutta to defend these bases, or bases further back.

The 1st to 4th Raiding Regiments are currently defending the railway line at Dimapur, Silchar and Comilla plus Imphal.
They will all move to Rangpur shortly as well as all IJAAF Coy sized units.

Targets towards Cawnpore all have Light Industry centres except for Gorakhpur, which has some resources.
Lucknow has a garrison requirement of 120, probably has an Indian Army garrison and is too close to Cawnpore. Lucknow is probably not a good idea for a para drop.
Sambalpur has 421 resources while Ranchi has about 20 resources, neither have Light Industry.

Simultaneous drops at Allahabad, Benares, Gorakhpur and Ranchi could force a reaction from the Allies to distract ground and bombers towards those areas, and away from the Bengal region. If the Allies didn’t react, these bases could sustain themselves for a few weeks and the IJA forces could be withdrawn by air if required.

Is this sort of operation worth doing?

To myself the situation screams of some such operation. But where?

I'm looking at Ranchi, and possibly Cuttack later on order to cut the rail lines into Calcutta. From Ranchi you can spread out to the surrounding area and the final cut would be Cuttack. May be a bit too ambitious, but...

All would depend on transports in the region, and I understand Japan doesn't have a whole lot to begin with. As for bringing in supply you could use bombers to supplement things.

OPERATIONAL REPORT FOR Jun 22, 43
Submarine TF 39 diverted to Adak Island due to damage

Repairs completed on E Karii at Hiroshima/Kure, ship returned to service – the 2x Momo class Escorts now have depth charges so can finally be used as convoy escorts.

IJN 2nd Fleet Intelligence staff predict that the Allied cruisers are lining up a bombardment of Chittagong. The BB Div (2xBB +9xDD) and CA Div (3xCA +9xDD) at Akyab are ordered to patrol Chittagong hex with reaction range of 2. Some Tojos are set to LRCAP range 0 over the BB task force. The DDs are all Fubuki class carrying full loads of long lance torpedoes. Moonlight is about 66%, but IJN ships still don’t have surface search radars.
The Allied cruisers are too far away to bombard Chittagong tonight, so 2x 36 plane Betty units are moved to Chittagong with Naval Attack orders out to range 14, altitude 6k, 10% search each from 260 degrees to cover the anticipated movement along the Indian east coast. Oscars have been set to escort out to range 14, altitude 6k. HQ 3rd Air Division will supply the torpedoes.
Vizagapatnam is 15 hexes from Chittagong, so if the Allied cruisers move one hex closer they will be within the set Betty range. There is no indication that the Allies have spotted the BB and CA Divs, and the Betties have only just moved to Chittagong so they will also be a surprise tomorrow. The Allies should know that their cruisers have been spotted though, so may not advance them closer.
If the Allied cruisers keep coming, will the IJA and IJN cooperate? If the Allies don’t set any LRCAP it might not matter. Fingers are crossed for some successful Betty strikes tomorrow!

Status: offline 		This task force is only 12 hexes from Chittagong moving east, with something else following behind it. Will the Betties launch from Chittagong?!

No was the answer… these two task forces have disappeared, but they are assumed to be somewhere near the yellow circle.
It might be time to move the Betties from Chittagong to Dacca so they can still launch against targets with torps to be supplied from HQ 3rd Air Army.

The 2nd Fleet BB and CA task forces are waiting on patrol at Chittagong to ambush this Allied task force.

Status: offline 		This is the welcoming party if HMS Dorsetshire and friends visit Chittagong tomorrow.
The Betties will stay at Chittagong as the 2x IJN task forces should be enough to counter any incoming Allied bombardment task force.

2x deliberate attacks are also ordered tomorrow in Bengal, one against the 14th Indian Div and the other against the IV Indian Corps.
Based on recent battles IGHQ is not expecting either stack to surrender, but with some luck a few units will.
