11th Tank Regiment – 93/100 TOE so one of the most combat ready IJA Tank Regts at the moment. I’ll try to post a summary of all IJA Tank units as most of them are in rest and refit mode at the moment. IJA light tanks really don’t do well against Allied tanks or AT guns, but I figure it is better to have them as additional targets and potential anti-personnel platforms. In their next battle, instead of giving IJA Tank Regts attack orders I might set them to Reserve (pursuit) in their next battle. There will need to be enough of them (say 4-6x Regts) so that they are strong enough to defend against any counter attack until the main force can join them.
2nd Army
27th Fld AA Machinecannon Company
Defending units:
121st RAF Base Force – this unit moved in from the NE which causes the IJA stack that was moving NE to reset to zero.

This is the enemy situation with Army Divisions shown.

Only Divs either already on map or arriving in 1943 are shown here.

The 5th Chinese Corps and 20th Indian Div are cut off and will be destroyed fairly soon.

18th British Div was zeroed during the battle of Dacca but that was a few months back, so they will have recovered to some extent somewhere, possibly at Calcutta.

5th Indian Div was last in contact at Dacca as well, but withdrew in reasonably good order so should be almost 100%.

19th Indian Div was last in contact near Rangpur and withdrew in reasonably good shape so should also be about 100% strength.

Contact with the other Divs shown here was generally earlier in 1943, so they may have recovered to almost full strength and others may have arrived from Australia and the US and be unidentified.

Details of the enemy situation in India.

Sub-total of Allied numbers spotted in the Patna to Calcutta area is about 350k troops, 3800 guns and 4600 AFVs.
Most Allied stacks along the Ganges River look like they have 1 or 2x Infantry Divisions plus an Armd Bde, or similar.
The Allies are already moving something NW out of Calcutta to who-knows-where, maybe Ranchi or Patna.
Since this image was taken another few movement arrows have popped up.

Allied forces around Darjeeling are no longer a threat so will be attacked but won’t be surrounded first.
They will be bulldozed backwards until destroyed or they escape across the Ganges.
The 5th Chinese Corps stack is completely surrounded so will be destroyed where it is.

Bases within the yellow goose eggs will start receiving photo recon visits from Dinah IIIs shortly.
The bases around Benares are on the short list for Para drops by the 4x IJA Raiding Regts, while those around Vizagaptnam will be recon’d just to keep the Allies guessing, which should reinforce the 25th Army deception plan.

Draft Plan for Course of Action 1 which is to continue the advance.

HQ Korea Army is available to lead 11x fresh and highly experienced IJA Infantry Divs towards Asansol which is a size 9 airbase, crossing the Ganges River on the Allied left flank, then advancing down the river via the hex currently occupied by the HQ XV Indian Corps stack. This advance can expect to receive constant aerial bombardment from allied heavy bombers, but that will create more opportunities for Tojo LRCAP (and soon Frank-A) to shoot them down.

HQ 1st (Tank) Army with 3x Tank Divs could lead a charge to Patna and try to capture it quickly with its size 6(7) and growing airbase. Patna airfield would provide another IJAAF fighter base to provide LRCAP over the ground force, and long range Dinah III recon even further into India.
The Tank Divs could then swing south towards Ranchi/Jamshedpur.

HQ 15th Army could take a few of the 11x Infantry Divs and split off from the main Asansol advance to capture Ranchi via the fast road, then join with 1st Army to capture the Jam Shed.

If any troops from the III, XV or XXXIII Indian Corps stacks move backwards then the IJA 11th, 12th and 13th Armies could advance.
There are 7 more IJA Infantry Divs between HQ 2nd Area Army at Dacca and the HQ 13th Army stack.
HQ 13th Army could feint a river crossing in support of the main Korea/15th Army river crossing to try and keep XV Indian Corps from interfering, then once the Korea Army clears the far bank it could cross unopposed and follow.

HQ 20th Army has 4x fresh Divisions with it so needs to capture the 5th Chinese Corps stack quickly, then it will all be available as a decent reserve force.
HQ 23rd Army has 2x recovering Divs and 5x recovering Tank Regts at Tezpur; plus another 3x Divs that are recovering at Rangpur.

HQ 2nd Army has 15th Div (moderately disabled) and 11th Tank Regt for the attack on Darjeeling. Once Darjeeling is captured HQ 2nd Div will move to Chittagong to ship out to the DEI.

Draft Plan for Course of Action 2, which is to switch to a defensive posture.

Destroy the 5th Chinese Corps stack and capture Darjeeling, then establish defensive positions.

The IJAAF would maintain a strong presence, conduct selected fighter sweeps in between CAP/LRCAP to inflict as many Allied bomber casualties as possible.
HQ 3rd Air Army has the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Air Divs available to step back towards their previous airfields on the Burma border.

There are a total of 24x IJA Infantry Divs and 3x Tank Divs to try and extract from this area in an orderly fashion.
Once the Allies spot backwards movement they will most likely advance to maintain contact, but that would bring them out into the open terrain and may create opportunities for aerial bombardment, local counter attacks and more LRCAP opportunities to shoot down Allied bombers.

HQ 2nd Area Army, 2nd Army and as many Southern Army and other “free” units as possible would move to Chittagong then ship out towards Sumatra and Java.

1st Army with the 3x Tank Divs would withdraw to Tezpur to refit and then be available as the theatre reserve. They would be available to move to either Dacca or Rangpur depending on where the Allies choose to attack first.

11th, 12th and 13th Armies would hold in place for as long as possible, then when the Allies start to advance they would withdraw via the Arakan coast towards south/central Burma.

15th, 20th and 23rd Armies would also establish then hold in TBC defensive positions. When pressed by the Allies they would withdraw via Assam into northern Burma.

Burma Area Army with a number of fresh 50s and 30s Divs under command would then take over the delay, to allow the above Armies to break contact and move back towards China and Manchukuo.

This might work to try and keep the victory point ratio above 3:1 by 1 Jan 1944.
The main concerns with continuing to advance are the damage and disruption that Allied heavy bombers cause to IJA troops in the open and the assumption that the US Army is continuing to send more reinforcements to India.

IGHQ have modified course of action #1 over the last 24 hours, with 1st (Tank) Army and 15th Army to cross the Ganges River together.

The plan now is to keep as much of the IJA offensive power together and focus on trying to clear the far bank of the Ganges River then maybe continue the advance to Asansol, depending on how the Allies react.

The units that will make the assault river crossing are shown here as 8x Infantry and 2x Tank Divs.
3rd Tank Div is the least experienced and is still carrying some infantry squads disablements, but the rest of these Divs are in top shape.

One Infantry Div (53rd from memory) will cross the river into Darjeeling tomorrow with 18th Div to follow the day after.

1st Tank Div (after Darjeeling is captured) and the 6x Tank Regts that are undergoing refit at Rangpur/Tezpur could still make a dash for Patna to support Para operations in that area, but they might also move to reinforce the Asansol attack.

202 and 251 George-1s swept Tulagi from Shortlands.

If they were all ready there would be 135 IJNAF fighters at Shortlands and 108 at Torokina.
The Allied numbers reported here are from the morning after.

A frontal attack on Lunga against 131 enemy fighters who have radar fighter controllers probably isn’t a good idea, so the 251 George-1s will sweep Tassafaronga tomorrow in an attempt to shoot down some area CAP.

N1K1 George are fast becoming obsolete with N1K2 rolling off the production lines so a few more George-1 sweeps will be ordered before they start being used as trainers.

14x USMC fighters were destroyed today for the loss of 3x George-1, with 1xKIA and 2xMIA pilots.
Two pilots qualified for CV service and were transferred to reserve. They will transfer to a CV fighter unit to replace a couple of <80 experience pilots.

14:3 is an encouraging ratio so sweeps will be ordered every few days to try and reduce the USMC fighter strength in SOPAC.

George-2 hasn’t been sprung on the Allies yet, but once all these units have George-2 they might make their debut via a massed sweep of Lunga.

6th Sentai pilots are doing well with their advanced training course, shooting down Allied transports that are flying supply to the 5th Chinese Corps and 20th Indian Div.
From CT’s AAR it looks like the supply would be getting through, but the Allies have been losing about 5 transports a day for the last 10 or so days, so they should run low on cargo planes at some point.
The 70+ experience pilots here were just “graduated” to the general F/FB reserve and replaced with 60s experience pilots.
There are now 258 fighter pilots in the reserve pool but about 60 of them are WIA.
That leaves about 200 true reserve pilots and they are all 69+ experience.
The pool of 70-79 experience fighter pilots is growing steadily now which is good as they are used to replace losses in the front line Sentai which are all full of 70+ (with lots of 80+) experience pilots.

A probing Tojo sweep in India by 11th and 26th Sentai gets a 36:6 air-air win.
Thunderbolts and Lightnings are not so very very frightening. Some P40K were also shot down.

11th Sentai has many pilots 81+ but a few replacements in the 70s. 2xKIA.
26th Sentai is mostly 70s experience and lost 2xKIA and 2xMIA.

2nd and 3rd Tank Divs force the Ganges river crossing against 2x Aussie armour units and clear the far bank.
2/4th Tank Regt was destroyed and 4th Armd Bde was pushed back to the SW.
The rest of the IJA stack will cross tomorrow.

Gorakphur and Katmandu are taken by the 2nd and 3rd Raiding Regts dropping from the sky.

3rd Raiding Regt will continue to arrive by air-land tomorrow with 1x IJNAF Coy also being flown forward.
The 47th IF Chutai (12x Tojo, MAJ Sakagawa) has moved to Gorakhpur to try and shoot down any unescorted bombers that are launched at the paras while they are in the open.

2nd Raiding Regt Engr Coy will need to cut a level 1 fighter strip into the mountain side to allow an IJNAF Coy to fly forward.
No Engr squads flew into Katmandu today, so if they refuse to get on the plane in coming days then 2nd Raiders will be stuck at Katmandu until engineers can walk there or the Raiders walk down out of the Himalayas to Gorakphur.

1st Raiding Regt is still at Imphal as the garrison which is not ideal.
The INA units need to move forward from Singapore to take over garrison roles, which will allow the 1st Raiders to join the rest of the IJA “Parachute Division”.

Dinah III recon flights over Benares and Allahabad today report them as empty, so 4th Raiders will drop on both of them tomorrow.
1x IJAAF Coy will then be flow into both to support more F or FB Chutai.

1st Raiders would have taken one of these targets if they weren’t still stuck on police duty at Imphal.
The recon report for Lucknow spots one enemy unit with 3660 troops. Perhaps a HQ unit with no vehicles?

144th Regt (55th Div) and 3rd Tank Regt are both 100% TOE and available to move from Tezpur by train towards Gorakphur, but it will take 3 days for them to get there only moving 5 hexes a day on the skinny gauge railway. The other 2x Regts from 55th Div and 3x Tank Regts are still recovering losses but will move when back to full strength.

Yellow arrows show Dinah III recon flights for tomorrow over Cawnpore, Jubbulpore and Raipur.
The purpose of these yellow arrows is to get the Allies thinking about further IJA para drops behind their lines.
There are no serious plans to send IJA Infantry Divs towards Cawnpore/Lucknow at this stage, but the Allies might divert troops from Calcutta towards NW India just in case.

Bombay is only 16 hexes from Allahabad, so it would be good to get some Dinah IIIs over Bombay to start making the Allies look even further over their shoulders.

Apart from the distractions of the para drops, the main attack remains the Korea Army axis with 1st and 15th Armies under command.
A multi-Sentai LRCAP is set overhead from both Dacca and Rangpur, but the Allies refused to launch bombers at the Korea Army, instead switching to night bombing of Rangpur.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Jul 10, 43
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Air attack on Rangpur , at 58,34 – IGHQ were expecting a change of tactics at some point, so Nicks are on night CAP at the main bases. Total Nick losses today (6 Air-Air + 2 Ops) aren’t good as only 1x B24 was reported as an ops loss. Nick altitude was set 5k’ above the bombers so I will drop them to about 1k’ and try that tomorrow night.
AA Regts in this hex didn’t seem to fire despite having supply, perhaps the severe storms kept the gunners away from their guns?

Engineers can't 'air drop'. They are limited to being 'air transportable'. Level 9 load factor IIRC. To parachute in a device needs to have a load of 7 or less.

Thanks I had a vague memory of something like that but haven’t had time to check.
They must have heavy picks and shovels!

I think I’ll cancel all further flights to Nepal and order them to take a hike down to Gorakhpur.

Wikipedia says the Royal Nepalese Army had 16x Battalions.
Gurkhas in British Army service were on top of that.

Based on that, I doubt a company of IJA paras would have been able to capture Kathmandu!

Darjeeling was captured. 18th Div will now catch the train to Chittagong to ship out to Java.

Allahabad and Benares were occupied unopposed by paras. +35 supply per day between them.
No more para drops planned, but the Allies don’t know that.

Cawnpore has a small garrison while Jubbulpur and Raipur look vacant.
A few Allied movement arrows have popped up around Calcutta so the para ops might be prompting some backwards moves to garrison rear areas.

Allied night bombing raids against Dacca and Rangpur continue causing more Nick losses...

Yup, those B-24 'night fighters' can be tough.

I launched a large (for the IJAAF) night bombing raid at a big allied airfield that has no fighters but lots of bombers and transports.
The Helens and Sallys flew into thunderstorms so hit sweet FA...

Still, it might force the Allies to put up some of their own night CAP.

If there were more Allied heavy bomber ops losses than reported here then these Nick losses might be sustainable.
The aircraft are relatively easy to replace but 70+ experience pilots are harder to replace.

There are 2x size 60 Nick-C factories building 4/day with 29 Nick-C in the reserve pool. There were 7 Nick-C losses today, 4 A2A, 1 ground and 2 ops.
13 Nicks are out of the fight tomorrow due to battle damage needing repairs. 27th Sentai needs to rotate out to take replacements, so 45th Sentai will rotate in to Rangpur to replace them.
For pilots today, 27th Sentai lost 2x KIA + 1x WIA while 44th Sentai at Dacca had no pilot casualties. Those sort of pilot losses are sustainable.

Last time the Allies tried night bombing in Burma they gave up after about a week, so we will see how long these night raids continue for.

Defending units:
2nd Gordons Battalion
221 Group RAF
29th Indian Mountain Gun Regiment
121st RAF Base Force
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Darjeeling (59,32) – 12308 supply is in the base. I assume that most of that was captured but some/all of it might have just moved there after capture.
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 28196 troops, 394 guns, 280 vehicles, Assault Value = 947
Defending force 3113 troops, 100 guns, 18 vehicles, Assault Value = 34

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!
Assaulting units:
4th Tank Regiment – Southern Army, pursued into the Mountain terrain, which isn’t a good place for light tanks to be…
56th Division – 81 experience. 25th Army so could move to Chittagong to ship out, but as a 50-something Div it is allocated on paper to Burma Area Army. It will stay in R&R at Darjeeling until back to 100% then be available for operations in India. Current TOE is 93/100 so it is in good shape and won’t take long to fully recover.
21st Medium Field Artillery Battalion – 15th Army, so will move to join the main Korea Army / 15th Army advance.
18th Division – 86 experience. 25th Army, will rail to Chittagong then ship out to Java.
1st Hvy.Artillery Regiment – Southern Army, so will rail to Chittagong to ship out.
3rd Ind.Hvy.Art. Battalion – Southern Army, as above.
1st Art.Mortar Regiment – Southern Army, as above.
10th Medium Field Artillery Regiment – 20th Army, will wait at Rangpur until HQ 20th Army has cleared the 5th Chinese Corps hex.
2nd Medium Field Artillery Regiment – 20th Army, same as above.
21st Mortar Battalion – 23rd Army, will rejoin HQ 23rd Army which will itself move from Tezpur forward to Rangpur then await further orders.
Defending units:
21st Indian Mountain Gun Regiment - destroyed
RAF 225 Group Base Force
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 60,35 (near Tezpur)
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 12689 troops, 158 guns, 71 vehicles, Assault Value = 844 – minus 69 since the deliberate attack yesterday, so it looks like 14 infantry squads recovered from being disabled.
34th Div is now only two days away from bringing +469 assault strength with it. That still won’t be enough to get 1:1 odds without the Allied stack being fatigued and disrupted, so Helen/Sally bombers will soon return here to about 8k’ ground bombing missions.
Defending force 23653 troops, 276 guns, 180 vehicles, Assault Value = 850 – minus 34 since yesterday, which is the same number of infantry squads lost. That suggests that the Allied stack is not recovering disablements, but the IJA stack is.
Assaulting units:
36th Division
19th Division
20th Army
Defending units:
75th Indian Brigade
20th Indian Division
5th Chinese Corps

There’s an opportunity to get fancy here by setting some of this stack to Reserve so it pursues, but the hex to the SW has 8 units, 30k troops, 400 guns and 900 AFVs.
I’ll play it safe and just focus on crushing the 11k troops who moved back into this hex to cause delay.
A big LRCAP is set overhead in case the Allied bombers target this hex tomorrow.
IJA disruption is zero and max fatigue in this stack is 3.

The war has progressed with 13-16 July seeing high intensity air and land battles in India.
Korea Army has pushed SW and just won a big battle against XV Indian Corps.
The Tojo and Nick forces have held their own but are getting tired.
The first unit will upgrade to Frank-A in a few days which will be important as B-24s are almost untouchable right now.
The Allies are using a random mix of planes, including Beauforts and Venturas.

The Tone-Chikuma CA Div sank a DD and xAK in the Aleutians.

Relatively quiet in SEAF.
If the weather wasn’t mostly thunderstorms there would have been a massed George-2 sweep of Tulagi by now.

This is where things started to get interesting!

IJN maritime patrol aircraft report an Armed Merchant Cruiser task force approaching Calcutta.
The Southwest Area Fleet intelligence staff believe that these Allied ships have been misidentified and that they are most likely RN Heavy Cruisers with a few DD escorts. Maybe 4xCA and 4xDD to get to the 8 ships sighted.

Multiple Betty groups were set to naval attack with torpedoes loaded so they must have been spotted too late in the day to launch. Opportunity missed.

The IJA has 2x surface combat and 6x cargo ship task forces at Chittagong.
None of the task forces at Chittagong show signs of being spotted, so the assumption is that the Allied task force is coming in for a bombardment run.

CA Div 1 has the lowest task force number with 3xCA and 9xDD Fubuki II including long lance torpedoes. With 100% moonlight the hope is that their lack of radar won’t be a critical weakness.

CL Div 2 has 3x CL Kuma class and 9x DD Minekaze. None of this task force have long lance torpedoes, so they need to get into 8k yards before launching torps.

Merchant task forces are ordered to stop unloading supply and move down the coast to try and avoid the Allied cruisers. There are a few hundred victory points worth of merchant ships in these task forces, plus lots of supply on board that would not be good to lose.

It turned out that there were a few more RN Cruisers than the Int staff were expecting.
Despite higher HQ knowing that this Allied task force would likely move to Chittagong the battle played out as if the Allies achieved tactical surprise.
The CA task force was set to patrol with low threat tolerance so I kept expecting them to withdraw but they didn't...
There was also a distinct lack of long lance torpedoes launched which was disappointing.

CAs Aoba and Kako copped floggings with multiple penetrating 8" hits.

But wait, there's more...

CL Div 2 then made contact against a slightly depleted Allied task force, but they were still outnumbered and outgunned.
CL Kuma suffered a magazine explosion thanks to 8" sniper fire early in the battle then seemed to attract fire from every allied ship before sinking.
The only positive from this battle was that only 1x CL was lost!
