We're slowly getting back into this.

US battleships bombarded Adak -

quote:

Night Naval bombardment of Adak Island at 162,52

Japanese aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses
H6K4 Mavis: 6 damaged
H6K4 Mavis: 2 destroyed on ground
A6M2 Zero: 2 damaged
A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed on ground
D3A1 Val: 1 damaged

Allied Ships
BB Idaho
BB Pennsylvania
BB Oklahoma
BB Maryland

Japanese ground losses:
1034 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 18 destroyed, 34 disabled
Engineers: 4 destroyed, 2 disabled
Guns lost 9 (2 destroyed, 7 disabled)
Vehicles lost 3 (1 destroyed, 2 disabled)

Airbase supply hits 7
Runway hits 21
Port hits 7
Port supply hits 2

There's little I can do now in the Aleutians, as the Japanese carriers and battleships are occupied with the invasion of Java, Ambon, and Burma. I'm using air transport to pull fragments from units at bases with airfields. There has been sporadic reinforcement of Dutch Harbor and some attacks, but both sides have comparable AV.

At Changsha, the Chinese forts have been reduced to 2, so continual aerial bombing has commenced to keep it from increasing.

A6M5 Zero research advanced 1 month, from April to March, 1943. It will continue to advance one month every 14 days (+/-), so production is projected to start sometime in July '42. A6M3 (due Jun '42 and not CV capable) and A6M3a (due Dec '42) are, therefore, irrelevant.

Japanese cruisers attacked at Rangoon, sinking 3 (probably empty) transports -

xAK Zvir, Shell hits 6, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
xAK Marpessa, Shell hits 11, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk

A US sub fired 4 torpedoes at CVL Shoho near Morotai, and missed.

The Japanese force voluntarily evacuated Ichang after several days of marching in combat mode. Since the Chinese had a more than 3 to 1 advantage in AV, I had expected to be attacked (and severely mauled) at any time.

A US Marine Bn landed at Umnak Is. and one of the transports hit a mine -

quote:

Ground combat at Umnak Island (169,51)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 4548 troops, 64 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 147

Defending force 260 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 13

Allied ground losses:
6 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Assaulting units:
16th Infantry Regiment
9th JNAF Coy
2nd Field Artillery Regiment
37th JNAF AF Unit

Defending units:
1st Marine Raider Bn /1

Cam Ranh Bay port has finally reached level 6.

Bases captured today: Langsa and Shortlands

BB Nevada bombarded the Japanese troops at Dutch Harbor; 4 other battleships bombarded the Japanese troops at Umnak. The Marine Bn fragment at Umnak was destroyed by deliberate attack.

In China, 7th Chinese Corps surrendered to 9th Armored Car Co. This corps was one that started near Sinyang and has been chased all over central China.

Bases captured today: Pingsiang (RES 120(0)), Dobodura, Kokoda, Makassar (RES 17(3))

Bases assaulted today: Ambon

The 3 BB cover TF at Ambon did their job, reacting to a 4 PT TF and sinking 1, and a 7 MTB TF and sinking 5. The transports unloaded completely, suffering some damage from the CD guns, and will retire tomorrow. 48 Div (+) should have no difficulty capturing Ambon from the ragtag collection of defenders.

Eight British light cruisers bombarded the Japanese troops at Moulmein, but did little damage (the Allies still hold the base) -

A deliberate attack at Batavia reduced forts to 1. A deliberate attack at Pingsiang (I guess I forgot to change to shock, as I said in the previous post), captured the base even after being bombed by B-17s from Chungking -

Bases captured today: Ningsia

Probably because of 0% moonlight, in several surface engagements near Ambon one or both sides were able to evade combat.

Subs put torpedoes in an xAP and AMC near Ceylon.

I expected better at Ambon, but probably due to a very low supply situation -

The Japanese TF retreated after combat. But, since Tavoy had been set as home port, the surviving cruisers returned to Tavoy before the Brits left, and Kumano and Suzuya were also sunk, after getting some hits on the Brit BBs. Lesson learned - set a TF home port away from any potential action, and use remain on station to defend a base.

In the meantime, BB Mutsu completed repairs at Hakodate and A6M5 Zero research advanced from Mar to Feb '43.

Batavia was swept of mines. CL Helena bombarded Dutch Harbor. Everything else was less significant than these 2 insignificant items.

Mar 22, 1942

More of the same. A sub hit a mine at Dutch Harbor.

A river crossing shock attack at Wau failed -

A single Allied xAK arrived at Merak and was attacked by Nells from Palembang. Wondering what that's about; recon by suicide?

Bases captured today: Kolaka (flipped; RES 40(0))

Bases assaulted today: Namlea

A Japanese cruiser TF at Batavia sank the lone xAK wandering nearby.

B-17s from Chungking began bombing Hong Kong, and did a good job on the repair shipyard, dropping it from 50 to 13. Two cruisers are there doing upgrades (another 10 and 14 days needed). I'm wondering if the upgrades will be discontinued if the RSY is dropped to 0? I think the upgrade start requirement for those heavy cruisers is RSY 30. Anyway, a well trained Zero squadron has been moved to Hong Kong, and other assets in China will begin a sweep and bomb campaign against Chungking. We'll see how that goes.

A tank only attack at Kalidjati suffered no casualties, while infantry and artillery arrived -

KI-45KAIa Nicks will become producible about a week before the normal May 1 date. A second 30(0) production site has finished and with research already at 44% and over 500 engines in inventory, 56 research points will add to the 44% in 28 (or fewer) days.

Bases captured today: Namlea (vacant), Sabang, and Kalidjati.

To follow up on the Nick advance, since the engine pool is over 500 (not by much, but over), Nick research advanced 4% today with two 30(0) sites. So, perhaps production will start as early as mid-April! Using 2 engines each, that will pretty much wreck the engine pool, so those (Ha-35) will be increased by at least 60 very soon.

Also, the first (of 5) Tojo research site attained 30(0) at Maebashi.

CL Helena bombarded Unmak.

Ambon was swept of Allied mines.

To try to counter the B-17s at Chungking, Zeroes at Hankow were set to sweep, followed by Betties at Hankow to bomb - unfortunately the Betties flew first and lost 6 with nothing to show for it. The Zeroes shot down 1 AVG fighter. Other Zeroes restationed to Hong Kong to intercept, but no B-17s flew this day.

All Japanese carriers arrived at Yokohama for aircraft replenishment and a couple days repair. The battleships are a day behind. Starting in April the carriers will sortie in 2 task forces, maintaining Yokohama as the home port, showing Tulagi as the destination, with a waypoint in the Aleutians. Hopefully, this will draw the Allied carriers to the South Pacific (I think at least 2 of them are already there, so to keep them there), while achieving surprise in the Aleutians. Oilers are loading in Japan to support this move, and transports are heading to the Kuriles to evacuate Dutch Harbor, if that becomes feasible.

Otherwise, nothing of significance happened to report.

These units will likely only survive another day or two, so may be done for before an evacuation attempt could start. I've been flying in supply from Amchitka, but it's not nearly enough.

Zeroes escorted Betties from Hankow to bomb Chungking, but did negligible damage. I'm not sure if the B-17s are still there or not; recon shows bombers, but that could be the Chinese junkers in training.

A6M5 research advanced from February to January, 1943.

Bases assaulted today: Djabolo and Obi (dot bases somewhere north of Ambon)

Sallies from Hankow bombed Chungking at night; no losses, but no hits either. Zeroes and Betties bombed during daylight and had some moderate success, but didn't hit any B-17s.

Dutch CLs bombarded Ambon, but didn't hit much. The slug of Japanese transports left earlier.

An attack near Sian pushed some Chinese units back, with heavy casualties -

Bases captured today: Djailolo and Obi

Three CVs and 3 CVLs depart Yokohama for Tulagi (by way of the Aleutians). Three battleships are a day behind. The was no Allied naval activity around Dutch Harbor and Umnak today, and no ground attack at Dutch Harbor, even though the unsupplied Japanese 24 Rgt still clings on at Dutch. The Allied CINC made a comment about the difficulty resupplying the big guns, so I'm wondering if they departed? Could he be content with recapturing Dutch Harbor, and ignore the rest of the island chain? I think I would want to go at least as far west as Adak. We'll see.

A small CV TF is sighted near Milne Bay. Along with Port Moresby-based SBDs, they attacked a small Japanese reinforcement TF at Buna. Oscars shot down a total of 6 land-based and 7 carrier-based SBDs! No Japanese ships were damaged.

At Chungking, the escorting Zeroes shot down a Hawk and 2 P-40s, but lost 6 Betties. The night-bombing Sallies, having been a total failure at Chungking, will turn their attention to Changsha.

The only significant action was fighter dogfights over Buna. Warhawks from Port Moresby swept Buna and lost 4 planes to the Oscar CAP, followed by a sweep by Aircobras, which downed 7 Oscars for 1 loss.

Apr 4, 1942

CV Indomitable was sighted west of Rangoon, but the 4 sub torpedoes missed.

Bombing of Changsha started more fires.

B-17s from Chungking bombed Shanghai, reducing the Merchant Shipyard to 14(16). Edit to add: This bombing also reduced the Repair Shipyard at Shanghai to 25(25); that didn't show in the combat summary.

Nells from Bangkok attacked BC Repulse near Moulmein, scoring 1 torpedo hit, but losing several planes to CAP and flak.

5 Recon Rgt and artillery unloaded at Port Blair, reinforcing the weak garrison. The amphib TF had a low DL on it and I was concerned about interference with the unloading.

A few words on logistics -

Adequate resources from Hokkaido are flowing to Honshu; not so from Sakhalin, due to the slow rate of port improvement at Toyohara. I've started loading resources at Shikuka to reduce the backlog (should have started much earlier) and am sending another engineer unit to Toyohara. Resource flow from China and Manchukuo has been adequate, if not quite the amount available.

Fuel and oil are coming out of Palembang at a steady rate; the fuel being split between the home islands and Babeldaob/Truk, the oil to the home islands, but at a lower rate than fuel.

Edit to add: An attack at Changsha reduced forts to zero, but at considerable cost.

Ha-45 engine research advanced from Jul to Jun '43; Kawasaki Ha-60 engine research advanced from Feb to Jan '43.

BB Revenge bombarded Port Blair and a Brit? CV TF was sighted east of Trinkat, but its attack on transports returning from Port Blair didn't hit anything.

Three P-38s swept Wuchang from Chungking.

Nells from Bangkok attacked a TF at Moulmein without escort and lost 5 planes without doing any damage to Allied shipping.

Two of our battleships bombarded Dutch Harbor (for no reason other than they could), causing some damage (but not worth showing).

CVs Formidable and Indomitable were sighted (in the same TF) between Rangoon and Port Blair. Both had 4 torpedoes fired at them; all 8 missed (same sub).

Shanghai's airfield reached level 7.
