Bases captured today: Calapan and Cebu (RES 14(6), LI 14(6))

As I expected email intel (the best kind when playing Japan) confirmed that it was a battalion lost by the Allies at Victoria Point; it was supposed to land farther north, but he apparently messed up, lol.

quote:

The "Lost Battalion" off the Burmese coast was a faux pas.
It was to have been dropped on the coast two hexes south of your advanced position and covered by a surface task force but my staff muddled the orders. LOL

I took a gamble at Dutch Harbor and lost -

quote:

Night Naval bombardment of Dutch Harbor at 171,50 - Coastal Guns Fire Back!

Non Combat: 5 destroyed, 6 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 10 (2 destroyed, 8 disabled)
Vehicles lost 3 (1 destroyed, 2 disabled)

Port hits 9
Port fuel hits 1

Followed by the gamble -

quote:

Ground combat at Dutch Harbor (171,50)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 8173 troops, 42 guns, 32 vehicles, Assault Value = 241

Defending force 6158 troops, 134 guns, 134 vehicles, Assault Value = 104

Bases captured or assaulted today: None

CV Kaga took a torpedo from a US sub near Adak; damage is not too bad. That sort of makes up my mind what to do with this CV TF - Kaga needs repair and the 2 CVLs need to increase the air squadrons on board to the ship maximum AND swap out Claudes for Zeroes - so it's back to Japan to do that. CV Akagi may lurk at Amchitka to attack targets of opportunity in the Aleutians.

Two US heavy cruisers bombarded Dutch Harbor.

More email intel -

quote:

Your invasion of Dutch Harbor took me by surprise.
Don't know whether I should abandon it.

Both sides at Dutch Harbor are equal in strength; the US controls the base with level 2 forts; why would he consider abandoning it? Of course, this message was before Kaga took a torpedo; that may change his mind.

Jan 26, 1942 Preview

CVL Shoho arrived at Yokohama with 12 Claudes and 9 N1 Kates. The aircraft complement is changed to 21 fighters and 9 torpedo bombers, with the Claudes upgrading to A6M2 Zeroes (90 in inventory), but the Kates staying N1. The total capacity is 30 aircraft and the torpedo load is 18, so with 9 Kates Shoho can launch 2 full strikes with torpedoes.

Our carriers near Amchitka have escaped detection, but a US CV has appeared east of Dutch Harbor. CV Kaga will continue west with only its Vals providing search and ASW support. The Kates have been split with 1/3 going to each of the other 3 carriers, while her Zeroes are now on CV Akagi. We will attempt an ambush.

Our CV TF in the Aleutians didn't move far enough to engage any of the Allied TFs, but is still undetected and will continue. Meanwhile, BB Arizona bombarded Dutch Harbor.

Bases captured today: Samarinda (OIL 99(1)), Namatanai, Sidate, and Manado

Bases assaulted today: Buin

Two battleships led an amphibious TF into Port Blair and engaged 2 Allied TFs, sinking an xAKL and TK. The troops will land tomorrow, while the BB TF hovers.

At Bataan forts are reduced to zero -

The entire 1st Div has yet to arrive, and Bataan is ready to fall before the end of January with only 2 full Japanese divisions on Luzon. This is due to the poor defensive posture of the Allies, which caused individual Philippine Army divisions to be defeated in detail rather than withdraw to Clark Field and it's x3 terrain. See the map in post #36.

Yes, it was. My opponent's defense of Luzon was terrible. He allowed too many units to be isolated and destroyed at insignificant points away from the best defensive terrain - Clark Field. When captured Bataan still had about 17k supply.

Bases assaulted today: Ternate and Morotai

The Allies began an offensive in Burma/Thailand a while back, presumably to forestall the coming Japanese offensive into Burma. Elements of the 18th British Division have been moving east toward Rahaeng and south toward Tavoy. Their first successful attack occurred on the coast north of Tavoy -

The force that had been moving toward Rahaeng has turned back. There are a lot of Allied ships in the area, among them Prince of Wales and Repulse, and probably a Brit carrier or two.

3 Air Div HQ is moving by rail to Bangkok to enable torpedoes on the Nells currently at Bangkok. Japanese reinforcements are heading to Tavoy as shown on the map above. Four carriers will pass by Singapore on the 29th, showing Georgetown as their destination. If they can remain undetected for 3 more days we'll try to set up another ambush, this time near Tavoy.

In Malaya, the final push to conquer Singapore has begun -

Unless the Allied units at Mersing withdraw to Johore Bharu SOON, they will be lost for the defense of Singapore. That force consists of an Australian brigade and several support units. 56 Div will keep them occupied while 18 Div and the Imperial Guards move to Johore Bharu, cutting the retreat route from Mersing. 6 Tank Rgt is loading transports at Singkawang and will reinforce Mersing as soon as 56 Div gets there. 4 Div, currently at Bataan, is also available to reinforce Mersing, but it will take at least a week to 10 days for them to get there.

Bases captured today: Port Blair, Ternate, and Morotai

BB Colorado bombarded Dutch Harbor. We have 3 BBs armed and fueled at Adak, 2 of them have a day or 2 of repair, and then we'll try to ambush the Allied ships operating out of Cold Bay. Our carriers have departed for warmer waters, replenishment (all torpedoes were expended by the 3 carriers in our sinking of BB Warspite and damaging of CV Lexington, confirmed by email intel BTW), aircraft upgrade, and some minor repairs.

The Chinese 100th Corps (a survivor of the battles at Wenchow) is now in clear terrain and is in the process of being surrounded and destroyed -

9th JNAF Coy was successfully disembarked at Umnak, but the 4th Shipping Engineer Rgt, on this fast transport TF, was not. The AMC later sank; the DDs are returning to Adak.

BB Fuso hit a mine at Tavoy, but sustained only 2 system and 1 float damage. A CA TF made a high speed run up toward Rangoon (but not into the mined harbor) and sank an Allied AMc. Four carriers passed Singapore and have low detection in the Malacca Strait; they will proceed north. A brigade of 33 Div is unloading at Tavoy; another is loading transports at Alor Star; the third will load when its transports arrive.

Bataan and Tavoy are being swept of mines; Manila has been swept.

ARD Dewey, trying to escape Manila, was sunk by CL Kiso TF.

Allied cruisers sank a PB unloading supplies at Buin; followed by carrier air sinking an xAK delivering engineers to Gasmata. I didn't expect a US carrier to be that far north! Nells are restationed from Roi-Namur to Rabaul to deal with it.

Bataan has been cleared of mines.

It appears that 2 US CVs are operating just south of Rabaul. SBDs sank a CM at Namatanai and a DD at Gasmata. A heavier strike on the Japanese TFs at Rabaul had several bomb hits, but did little damage -

A major setback today in the Molucca Sea enroute to the invasion of Namlea. Our light cruiser TF, followed by 2 amphibious TFs, encountered a stronger Allied TF led by CL DeRuyter and CL Marblehead. Our amphibs were demolished in a series of attacks -

Bases assaulted today: Donggala

The xAP torpedoed yesterday at Tulagi was hit twice more and sunk!

We lost a mid-sized TK to a Dutch sub at Miri.

The Allied survivors of Rabaul wandered into Gasmata and were wiped out by attrition.

In the Aleutians, a Japanese ASW TF was wiped out by an Allied heavy cruiser TF near Adak.

All Japanese carriers are currently in port for repairs, but except for Kaga will be ready for action in a few days.

A night aerial bombing of Singapore did little damage; a sweep of Singapore by Zeroes downed 2 Buffaloes.

Bases assaulted today: Manokwari

An AMC and DD fast transport TF delivered part of a JNAF to Umnak before is was sunk by SBDs flying out of Cold Bay. Our feeble 4 Zero LRCAP was insufficient to stop them. But, with more engineers on Umnak, we'll EVENTUALLY get a level 1 airfield to accommodate Zeroes for CAP. I'm guessing Jakes on CAP won't be much good.

CV Kaga arrived at Yokohama and will require 92 days in the shipyard to repair 14 flotation and 21 engine damage.

CV Lexington was reported sunk (it was damaged in the Aleutians back on Jan 27; see post #67), but email intel leads me to believe this new report is fog of war.
