ORIGINAL: Roger Neilson

In a game that I 'won' a few weeks ago I took all of China but Chungking and was never able to scratch it. If I had pulled every unit from the rest of the map I might have been able to do so. It and Karachi are invulnerable effectively if there are reasonable numbers of troops in there with a level 9 fort. The attacks I made were causing casualties on my troops in the 30K mark and not doing anything to his fortification level.

Roger

it is not a problem - only 50 units left in chungking and I have 2 full armies not engaged - i will eat my shoes if chungking will not fall fast
i lost over month on cut off units in Burma , lost 3-4 months on Kugchang - half of chinase troops is still there and there is over half a year later
if i need to go for another half year bullshit ......

question when and if land combat wil be solved?
i miss early Witp mornings and has low will to start another game

hi,

can you post picture of China?

I would like that you continue your game if it possible.

What about leaving those units in none base hex - they should be without supply and therefore they don't have any offensive value. Fortify capture bases and with some units and send the others?

what do you think?

Pauk - I want to move army out of china I already need to commit 6 big + support units to block Kungchang area - now even more at Yunan when I need all troops at Chungking
Raver is too good player to be given so big favours regularly in this game - not when he uses what he can to beat me
all enemy units are off supply for months so it doesn't influence
China picture was posted few days ago - only diffrence that enemy Yunan froces are on trail to hanoi
and yes I would like to continue ASAP too

with our playing speed we could enter 43 in a week time

Hi all
unfortunatelly Matrix staff did not solve LCU combat problems with last patch
we can't even guess how many months we will need to wait for another one
it would be a pity to abandon this game
even if we find that when we go deper and deeper in game some issues are more and more irritating and bugs are more and more visible
i think that this game should cross year 43 - for our fun / satisfaction and for developers as it looks like there is still little data about mid and late war stages

we decided to comtinue
and to help with what we found game breaking there is one more house rule implemented
any time units are without retreat path their supply level is checked
7 days after their supply reach zero they are obliged to go attack besiging forces in constant manner - it will influence china theater as well as pacific islands
it is pity to me that pacific islands will be cleared so fast - much faster than in many recorded cases but it is only way to finish chinase rambo warriors
soon there should be news from the front

we are at war again
due to our new house rule chinase troops at kungchang starting suicide attacks
look at adjusted strenght and losses - no comments 1:20 odds and only twice the opponents losses

Attacking force 105644 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 2392
Defending force 98629 troops, 814 guns, 166 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 1931
Allied max assault: 668 - adjusted assault: 53
Japanese max defense: 1630 - adjusted defense: 1323
Allied assault odds: 0 to 1

Hmmm if I was Raver I would be delighted with this house rule.

If his army is wiped out early enough all the units will respawn at Chungking in 30 days increasing the garrison dramatically even respawned units with the urban bonus are formidable.

In fact if I was him I would aready have all those units prepping for Chungking now.

chungking is out of supply - airfield is damaged at 100% and not repaired - supply production is minimal and it will stop when my troops enter city

i shouldn't have any problem in reaching high odds - chungking x13 ( fort + urban) x.25 as starving = x3 sth like this there is 50 units currently there - 75% of chinase army are inf corps
=35 inf corps at 300 AV each = 10000AV but poor exp - i think i can send similar high exp forces - his forts can't be rebuild
and i have a lot of engineers + aviation

weird rule but i couldn't find any better one
pity matrix did nothing in this field

btw good point i somehow thought that i have 3 months ... - looks like i need to enter chungking fast - not a big problem i have quite a lot of troops blocking this city and more can be send

enemy is back at new caledonia - lot of AP/msw seen there

enemy raid at asanol as ususal
42 tojos against 24 p-40b and 50+ mitchels
30 of enemy planes shot down :-) - no losses apart of many damaged planes - 80+ exp quality is a key to defence -

somewhere in mid Dec
with a great pleasure i'd like to inform that chungking operation is underway
Yesterday elements of 2 inf division enetered city area
more troops heads from SE,NE and west
blocking force for chengtu area will be deployed
no sign of allies fleet activity - Dave is probably best player i faced when patience is concerned - no recon and info
only sub war in eniwotek-marcus-wake triangle
Soryu was spotted yesterday - looks like KB will hunt for subs next day

Industrial and production area - i'm very pleased - i pump huge amounts to perimeter which is one big building area + i pump a lot to china where i'm at offensive and I still manage to see my supply raising steadily - i'm cosidering building up HI by another 500 - my armament and vehicle production eats a lot but within 6-8 months i will get lot of big units - very very simplifing rule of the thumb that you need as many armament points as unit weights - 6-8 inf div means 150-200k armament points
manpower is not an issue - 600k recruits ready to fight - i would be gladly to turn recruitment off for some time - i feel i don't need as many and it eats my resources
i'm stockpiling my engines - it may be considered a bit gamey - but certainly when faced allied 4e power it is not decisive for game
in general i'm close to 3 months reserve in nakajimas and 2 months at mitsubishi - it should rise to at least 6 months reserve in the moment my engine factories will be bombed out of surface. i should have chinase industrial potential repaired within 6-8 months so i should be able to add it to pool
great pity that cancelled ships are not in shipyard production - resources are limited but it could be players decision which ship to cancell and which to continue
i think my industrial position is far better than historical - it should help fighting unlimited allies planes a little longer, ground units should fight even better as supply shouldn't be a problem till late 44 when there will be problems with delivering it, recruits and armamentr points will be in abundance. but ... there is no way i could convert my industrial situation into stronger navy
i increased naval yard capacitry to sth like 1.5k and can accelerate alot of ships but it is not enough. most important problem is lack of heavy escort ships
BB are monsters in terms of fuel consumption - fuel is not a problem but it is difficult to have so many areas prepared with 300-500k fuel and i find that only such amount secures few months of operations.
best escort for CV are Kongos /CA - 18 ships and there is no replacement in this category -( BTW Japan cancelled CA in 7.42 if my memory serves good - i'd like to decide myself in such situation) Japan CL apart from disputable Agano class is laughable - almost all CL are nothing more like destroyer leaders in terms of durability and firepower
game engine basicly prevents Kitakami torpedos from use as there is no possibility of multiple targeting and my experiance shows them rarely shooting torps
Akitsuki type DDs are very good but there is not enough of them
i think that each CV should be covered by 1 heavy capital and 2DDs - unless big CV battle will happen soon - and i doubt it - Raverdave wants to play defensively unless there will be no doubts about his strenght superiority - i will be short of capital escort and big problem is that it ties my best surface assets to CV escort role

i tested chinase strenght today
chinase troops counterattacked my troops
almost 200k troops atacked my 2 inf div and 1 art rgt
result was extremaly satisfying
enemy lossses were far bigger and Dave was unable to throw my 2 div away
with a bit of luck i'll have up to 10 times such strenght in 2 weeks ready

baker bombarded by US BBs tonight - enemy TFs 180 miles east from Island
how it is possible to enter minefields at 20 knots - DMS and secure BBs -world wonders
ther are some weaker spots and Raverdave looks for them - sooner or later there will be an invasion on pacific perimeter
hopefully he did not landed on Wake 3 weeks ago
with 4-5 iv he had some chances to take it
canton and baker are mentally lost to me - they can't be defended long enough
just want to kill and disrupt as many troops as i can there
i have reserves within 2 weeks transport range and they load on boats now

I remember reading that escorting ships and BB's in a Bombardment TF could be separated so that the DD's were not exposed to Coast Defense guns. Is it possible he did the reverse: send in the DMS's close to spot while the BB's threw their stuff from extended range?

enemy withdraws to the east - no invasion on baker

as answer to CPT Harlock - there is no special procedure for DMS

all carrier fighter groups upgraded to m3 or m3a but there is nothing to be proud of ... Jap fighter are no more technologicaly advanced soon they will face hellcats and as in stock A2A combat winner takes everything ...

nothing to report - we have "trench war"

BTW PT boats reported at Nomua - slightly too late :-)

chengtu separated from chungking
last phase of china war should begin soon- maybe even within one week time

i checked my pools carefully yesterday
500 of tojos and 500 tony's waiting in reserves- lot of planes coming back within next 2 weeks
lots of supplies sent to china to make full even smallest base
i want to have china industry working on full power as soon as possible
if there is interest in industrial /map data i can post them

minor inconvinience - sqn bought out from kwantung after disbanding and rebuilding are kwantung again - waste of PP :-(

I'm rushing all R&D factories - it will be interesting to see if Jacks can be accelerated
i'm extremally disappointed with Betty mark2 stats - barely no improvement

recon shows that large allied LCU landed at Nomua
according to recon at least inf div is there - pity range is big and allied lba so strong at this stage - i would gladly pack my reserves on AP and move to clear that base before forts are build up

it is a kind of trap for me :-)
Raverdave put troops but no plane there - maybe he waits for my fleet to go there and than put a lots of planes ???
this together with PT could be harmful to japan navy

only air war at this moment
as earlier - regular 300+ 4e bombers over timor and 200+ raids over benares
none of these locations is defended by my air forces - it burns my precious supplies but at least i don't have attrition in fighter forces

short note about combat training - game do not offer any possibility with pilot training - i use uncaptured base close to manila to train my pilots into good standard of 75+
i know that players have mixed attitude to that training method but ...
china weather is mostly thunderstorms - all the 42 bombing real troops is at least difficult
second i want to use supplies to train better pilots - it is only method available
third and most imortant to readers - i noticed incredibly high ops loses
there is no opposition on the whole island - 120miles range - weather good to semi good and avg losses is 1-2 planes /100 participating in training - weird to me - looks like during training course which brings exp from 50+ to 70+ i loose 25-35% of all pilots - i will try to make some statistics and post them in main forum.

i recently looked at speedy&fabertong campaign - they had battle for wake we missed in this aar ,looks like best possible idea is let alied bleed on atols - it is extremaly difficult to hurt them when on rush with navy and loosing navy is one step to hell

meanwhile we had minor bug - our game looped and we have 19th dec all the time
it is an omen that Japan should reconsider going further

Little to report from the allied side, apart from the fact that the war seems to drag on with me making little head way. I have sortied my carriers a couple of times but as of yet Sneer has not deemed fit to committ his carriers to contest me. This leaves me somewhat puzzelled as the long he refuses combat the stronger I become.

Noumea is now occupied with X amount of troops, and apart from recon flights Sneer is sitting behind his fence. Though I doubted that he would try anything as the distance is against him.

Liberty ships are rolling off the slipways by the dozen and I have now made good all those horror losses of the first six months of the war. Supply is no longer a problem and Australia is now packed to the rafters with supplies. Troop transport is another matter.....I want amphib boats and I want lots of them !

I doubt that there will be any interesting combat in the next few months, that is unless Sneer finds his spine and decides to contest my CV TFs.

Raverdave tactics is puting all fighters on cap and waiting for me rushing into combat and loosing best carrier pilots - with ubercap feature it is slightly not fair - remember that RN joined fully US
i can't say i don't want to fight but i was late ( and somewhere else) during last raid
all combat places were unfavourable as he had close to base and I had none reasonable close to action area
what i saw in last few big battles in AAR section - if Japan moves too fast to combat close to dec 42 or later it looses badly - honestly speaking i do not feel superior in naval aviation anymore - Raverdave was very successful in preserving his carrier force till that moment and i really really miss the moment i did not catch them at dutch harbour .....
as far as nomuea ... - I remember i was there twice practicing on allied transports and now there are at least 3 big PT groups so who cares

so you'll bomb Chungking out of supply and than take it ? I guess all thee China army LCUs will be handy to defend Eastern India : You'll bury them in level 9 forts and duck whenever those 400 allied bombers pass by ...

something like this except there is no supply in chungking - they have already eaten everything
It would be nice to have few additional divisions in southern dei and salomons as it will delay allies by ap 6 months

So we have 42 over
i think about short summary about this war
i'm thinking especially about autovictory feature
we agreed we don't bother with autovictory but to some extent it is the only incentive for allies to try any offensive action in 42
i can understand there was no will for counterattacks in 1st part of 42 because Japan presented Allied strong beating . but 2nd half should be slightly more active. only 2 fronts have some air activity : india where long time has passed since any allied plane attack my position and Timor where regularly up to 300 B17 burn my supplies at lautem. together with one demonstration at Wake and one bombardment of baker that was everything i saw in 2nd part of 42. slightly dissapointing when i thing about Dollitle raid - only to boost US morale amd show some strenght.
i know there will be action in 43 and I know I lost ( or soon loose)most of my advantages.
RN fully concentrated in central Pac . it is obvious that when we agreed about karachi and India situation there is little incentive to be active there and probably situation will not change till late 43/44. - politically probably hard to imagine that with part of India lost RN is active close to wake.

even if i win next naval battle there is little chance to achieve decisive victory. other results will not help in medium term horizon.
i doubt that with current A2A model there is sense in jumping into combat only because time passes. Probably i will need to think about alternative strategy - if there is any ....
i have more oil , more supply , more spare planes , more ships than IRL in early 43 but i feel it will be very difficult to reach objectives for allies in 43

it seems that both of us are struck with "Allies-waiting-for-their-toys" bug

Seriously, i'm always for the house rules but realised like you, that certain house rules are two sided coins

house rules helps to avoid unhistorical results, but then can help to get unihistorical deployement of the forces - like you've experienced....
