18 - 22 October 1942 ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ One of the most interesting periods of the game initiated with the air battles of early October and the 18th might have been the most crucial day of this part of the conflict. The Allies throw everything at Magwe again, plus a surprise. BURMA: On the 18th the entire Allied strike force down to 3 Wirraways bombed our 146th regiment and base force at Magwe. They were one day from level 5 forts when the field was closed a few days before. This became important later as the highly disrupted and partial strength troops were shocked by two Chindit para units landing at the base! An incredibly bold move, and it almost worked. On the 19th I decided to use the kitchen sink. I flew in the IJN from Victoria Point and brought all Tojo and Oscar units to bear on the Magwe hex, plus called in ground strikes from several 2E units within close range. This was an intense day of air battles and the shear numbers of Japanese planes proved too much for the Allies. Either his sweeps didn't fly for the most part or he tried to put all fighters from Cox's on LR CAP. Trouble is that's 6 hexes, and the P-40Es didn't show up at all on the day, so I'm guessing he tried to use them to CAP at full range. Maybe? Range is not a problem for the IJN units, so they were flying from all over the place and all made it in for most of the battles that day. The Allied bomber force had major losses, but not as many as I'd hoped from the ridiculous numbers of fighters in the air. Still, about 1/4 of them didn't make it back, so that' not too bad. The 2Es suffered the worst as I only have one 4E-killer Nick group in the area at this point. I also had a ton of Tojo up at 31k expecting massed sweeps, so they probably didn't get to the bombers at 6k. After the day's air battles my own paras flew in and the Chindits were crushed when they tried another shock later. The poor 146th is down to 17 AV and is 85% disabled, but the light tanks and arty probably played a big part in these battles and kept the base secure. Now for some serious rest, as it's moving back. I softened up the Chindits for a few days before finally surrounding and wiping them out on the 22nd. The Allies only flew exploratory missions the next few days, including three Wirraways that made an ace for me and P-38s that were roughed up by my still strong CAP. I've begun rotating units out as they've been on LR CAP for a few days and are fatigued. I just bought a ton of base forces, an air HQ, about ten more AA units and some engineers that will all head to the area. If Burma is to be the focal point I need more resources here to get planes into the air and AA to protect troops in the clear. SUBS: Very little action lately. A few air ASW notes starting to pop up as crews get trained up. CHINA: I'm bombarding what is now a massive stack of 4200 AV blocking my 3800 AV on the yellow road near Chikhiang. Once my Southern flank move has initiated I'll pull out many of these troops and swing them around to support that move and protect Tuyun. PACIFIC: Nothing moving. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR October 18, 42 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on 146th Infantry Regiment, at 57,47 (Magwe) Weather in hex: Clear sky Raid spotted at 39 NM, estimated altitude 12,000 feet.
