On the 29th the IJN again moves in close to Shikuka. This time there are two CA TFs, three big BB TFs and lots of Es and SCs and MTBs to hit the PT boats and hopefully the other stuff that rollovers have been showing; xAK, LST, YMS, DM, DMS, SC and a few more types.

The first contact? A lone xAK sitting 1-2 hexes out from Shikuka.

A few APD are sunk by fast E and DD, then the first more equal battle as these DMS tangle with some slow Es. Fun to see some of these little types duke it out. This one was inconclusive, with damage to both sides.

Some MTBs did their job well, saving a few 20cm shells from the cruisers for later by taking out these LSTs, again sitting without escort one hex from Shikuka.

Hiei used 3 main gun shells on this lone xAK. This is what I'd hoped to avoid. This is two hexes out of Shikuka.

As day broke strikes went for the BBs near Shikuka, and luckily the KB CAP reacted, downing about 80 Allied fighters and bombers for only a few losses.

That was it for the naval battles of the day, just feelers, trying to get some paths cleared and test the Allied reaction. The next few days will be interesting!

The Allies shock another division over the river. This time the Indian 319th is reduced to 0 combat strength during the battle.

Are you tempted to counterattack them out of the hex? With a river retreat path, the losses would be staggering.

Those units moving in near Prome are worrying. I just don't know when they'll arrive, and I do know it's at least a divisions worth of troops. So I'll try a DA but not shock. Hopefully the disruption is very high for the Allies here.

After only a few "battles" with the single ship xAK breakwaters 80 miles off of Shikuka, two of my BBs are at less than 75% ammo. A few of the cruisers too. I'm going to keep it all going, but from what I can see, there are a lot of these ships out here. There were 750+ ships at some points in Shikuka. There are now only 523 on the rollover.

I'll send in the cruisers first and let the BBs wait, so possibly if they sink lot of the fluff he'll at least have to put more out, and the VPs do add up in the end.

I guess I should have brought 100 Japanese xAKs to lead the charge!

Sept 30, 1944

I ended up restricting everything to one hex out, and found mostly PT boats and a few stray xAK and LST. The PBs did a good job against PTs, but of course the VP exchange isn't positive there for the Ansyus, worth 10 points each. If it saves other ships though, it's worth it. Tomorrow I think I'll find some more serious resistance.

The DA in Burma didn't get a positive, and the brigade in hex was wrecked, from 260AV to 67AV. I'll be moving that back now.

He's started using some of the remaining B-29s against Paramushiro. That is good! Soon I'll jump in there.

Wow.
Just broke my habit of silent reading and logged in because this story really catches my attention; not only because of the well deserved strategic victories, but also by the AAR itself - could not help myself but really get infected with battle fever when your 'heavy brigade' charged last month... bloodlust? Me?
Not so often these days.
But to be honest I started to feel pity for his little pixel troopers, Schweinfurts everyday and everywhere.

Yes, the deep, Custer-like penetration by the Allies looked simply wrong at first sight and I didn't get dissapointed.

Exchanging all these fuel sucking small soon-to-die-anyway 'canoes' with Victory points is quite entertaining to watch.
Must think of Quincy's story in Jaws...

Sry for the broken language, but typing on a crappy phone in the middle of the night between frogs and owls during a night fishing trip didnot help *gg*

And, please, Obvert, insert another photo or two, you have a golden eye.
:-)
Back into radio silence.

Thanks for breaking your silenence! Always good to have a new contributor chip in to the AAR.

I think the deep penetration isn't wrong, it's just an opportunity for Japan to give the Allies some fight. I think Dan had just played a very aggressive opponent in John III and I am more measured in my responses. I don't alway jump in, but I will make aggressive moves. I hope to keep him guessing.

I just hope I won't be the one left guessing soon! We'll see!

Ok. Here is the second try at posting the Oct 1 turn. The first try ended up in my other AAR!! Whoops!!

Oct 1 started ominously. My CAs moved in and had to wade through a handful of unescorted LST, then ...

... three xAK. I'm not sure how much this impacted what happened next. The IJN just doesn't do well against late war Allied radar sighted gunnery and fast reloading 5" and 6" guns.

An IjN sub finally hit the xAK Granville Short, which has been lurking for a few days.

Then the remaining Allied cruisers made an appearance. This ASW TF was soon put down.

Fletchers crush the IJN DDs in this battle. The CAs aren't effective and left completely unescorted afterward. Yuck.

This battle was a rare positive for the IJN though. Santa Fe was damaged int he last bombardments, and I think took some solid 20cm shots and a torpedo. In this one the IJN CLs get in close and put another fish in her belly! Nice.

Oct 1, 1944

Here is the summary of actions. Again, epic, and this time the IJN can't make a breakthrough. A lot of DDs lost on the day. They just can't hang with the late war Fletchers and Sumners, even at night.

This made me question the plan to push the BBs in next. I changed orders about there times, but finally settled on it. If they can get through, it again gives some cushion against Allied bombing, and could set the Allied pools into the negative. It's worth the risk, and what other chances will I have? I also spotted some distant xAP TFs near the Aleuts. Moving West. I'm guessing this is the time the Allies will move the DS back in, so this may really be the last chance. Moonlight is 100% as well, so the best opportunity to not be decimated by Allied PTs.

I've increased the KB CAP and set them for close in 1 hex defence to cover BBs moving into Shikuka or out, but that's it. There is also some LR CAP from Wakkanai on the BBs. Here we go!

In other areas, the B-29s again hit the Kuriles, this time at Ketoi-Jima. It's very interesting which islands have been most targeted recently and previously. Ketoi, Onneketon and Paramushiro seem to be recent favourites. Does this mean those are future landing targets? Onneketon and Para have extensive CD guns and forts, both at level 6. Ketoi is at level 5 and trying to build up to 6, at about 55% now. There are about 950AV at Ketoi, about 1300AV at Onneketon, and almost 1500AV at Paramushiro. I'm so curious now whet the Allied plans will be. Regardless of the Shikuka bombardments outcome, I plan to sit back after that for a bit and see what happens, concentrating on building defences of Northern Honshu and Manchuria, which still need a bit more work.

Knowing Dan though, anything is possible.

The Chinese are still trying to break through in the mountains. Today one smallish Corps pushed over a river. The Chinese don't shock well, but this one was (not surprisingly) low on supply. I'm sure Dan just wanted to open the bedside, and more will follow. I envision some big Chinese losses up here if they keep on coming.

I keep thinking that kamikazes need to be combined with other offensive modalities during an overwhelming strike, rather than frittered in after everything else has been tried and found wanting. What are your opinions about combining your kamikaze pools (particularly against some of the DMS / YMS rabble around the Kuriles) with surface / CV action at this stage?

I don't think they're active yet, though. Shikuka and Toyohara are outside of activation range.

I can't find any reference to Japanese E type escorts having torpedos (sources WIKI, and Combined Fleet). From what I can find the Etorofu type escort carried 3 4.7 DP, 4-15 25mm AA, 6 DC launchers, and 1 AS mortar. What am I missing?

I see you have lost more precious DDs. How many do you have left?

Not enough, but they get less and less precious at this stage. For surface battles they're nearly useless now. I've experienced this before and remember the frustration.

Yep. I've tried bombing out there, and the DB/TB don't often fly, the low FB strafers don't hit much, and all of it gets nailed by the 850 plane CAP at Shikuka. In a VP sense it's not worth it, but if I were going in again, and had to do something, I'd find some more ways to hunt the fluff without using my BBs and CAs to do it.
