We all know fully well nothing about a "game" wherein one side is artificially enhanced to 'make it viable to play" can be fairly compared to historical outcomes.

The Japanese player can rightly thump his chest for his performance in holding the Allies to a mere marginal Victory, but he simply cannot claim a "win" unless the Allied side does indeed "lose" the game.

Who knows, maybe Dan won't even manage a marginal victory......then all the debate over nuance would be moot.



Hold the phone guys, I agree with Hans on a post he made that references victory points/conditions and historical results.

Excuse me while I go check to see if the world is ending, or hell has frozen over, or something similar.


As for whether Dan can achieve a marginal victory... he's in the Kuriles and Sakhalin in late-44. I will be some degree of shocked if he does not end up gaining enough strategic bombing points to achieve a marginal victory before the clock runs out 13-some months from now.

Alfred was referencing 1 Sept there, which is only 9 1/2 months. I still agree with you, and with Hans, that ...

A. Dan will get to marginal victory within an expedient timeframe from when he started the game, and could very well get more by the end.

B. The term "marginal victory" and associated VP ratio is separated from a historical perspective when Japan has so many extra tools and possibilities. It's a game, a fun one, but not linked to reality when I'm flying Ki-83s and employing full tank divisions in Burma in late 44 brimming with supplies and new Type 3 tanks I didn't even have to ship down.

I reinserted the CAP to Pegu, and had a great morning phase, getting some extremely good results against P-38s and decent against everything else. The afternoon was reversed, with oddly different results against the same CAP by a small Thunderbolt II group and catastrophic losses from one P-47D25 group.

I'll now move the CAP to recover, but altogether it's nearly even on the day, so not bad. I lost around 90 total airframes, he lost 78. I only lost 18 KIA and no MIA on the day, so that is great. Fewer and fewer planes fly for the Allies every day. I want to make a big use and see if I can get to some of these bomber groups, so I'll play with mixing bleeding and LR CAP next and see how that works. At 1 hex range the reaction of the low CAP is very different than if swept in its base hex.

No mores attacks at Uruppa, just more bombing runs. The Chinese bombard and show that the recent attack brought their AV down another 400 or so points.

Status: offline 		A bit of myopic commentary from a few posters recently.

The abstractions and game engine also provide the Allied player with many ahistorical benefits which enable even sub par play a chance of achieving a decisive Allied victory.  It is very misleading to peddle the idea that only Japan benefits and this therefore warrants discounting good Japanese play which prevents a decisive Allied victory.

Nothing in the game makes it impossible for an Allied player to achieve a decisive victory.  The VP system does a fair job of representing the historical will of either side to continue fighting.  Achieving a decisive victory requires outplaying the opponent strategically and tactically.  As seen in many PBEMs, a Japanese player who is outplayed will lose decisively irrespective of the alleged a historical elements.  It is the quality of play of both players which determines the eventual outcome, not the asymmetrical capabilities.

A marginal Allied victory is a game victory but it shows a performance outcome less than the historical outcome.  In this game, there is no guarantee that the Allies will even achieve a 1.25:1 VP ratio before 1 September 1945.  Time is fast ebbing away for the Allies.  Obvert seems well prepared to largely nullify a future Allied strategic bombing campaign against Japanese industry which currently seems to be the best chance for his opponent to get the VP ratio up to 2:1 before 1 September 1945.

If you mean that it's a game victory for the Allied player, then we are agreed. I feel you are singing somewhat different tunes between threads over time with regards to game victory conditions and historical comparisons - namely that historical comparisons, from a game victory/defeat standpoint, are out of the window at the get-go because (in essence) the game isn't a simulation.

Which, if the game were to end on September 1, 1945, would be relevant. But the game doesn't end then. The only time the 1.25:1 ratio matters is when the clock runs out in 1946. The only ratio that matters before the clock runs out is the autovictory ratio for the given year.

The manual states:
AV before Sep '45: DV Allies
AV before game end: MV Allies
1.75 - 2 Allies:Japan VP at game end: Draw
1.25 - 1.75 Allies:Japan VP at game end: MV Japan
<1.25 Allies:Japan VP at game end: DV Japan

All this assuming max 2 A bombs being used.

I wouldn't be too sure. My, albeit, casual reading of the plane losses makes me think Dan is running low on quality fighters, doesn't seem to be enamored of a strong night bombing tactic, and Japan has done wonders with her fleet, and is strong economically.

It just seems to me that the Allies aren't decisively targeting either Japan's Navy, Japan's air force, or Japan's economy. Having been here before, it takes one of those three things destroyed to allow the Allies to really rack up those consecutive 1000 VP gain days.

The 14th offers some action. Not much in the air, as I LR CAP Uruppa and Dan goes for Shimushiri again, but not heavily. Is this the next Kuriles invasion target?

The air is quiet in Burma as well, but he does try a DA at 56,53 (near Pegu). It gets only a 1:4 with big Allied losses. The 7th Aussie ID takes a big hit, as do the Indian Brigades and probably two of the Chinese Corps. The Indian 19th ID is only 1/3 strength asa well. Our mediocre 102nd ID was trying to get back up to strength after having 2/3 of the infantry squads disabled, and this hit means it'll have to move back to Moumein to recoup. Everything else is doing just fine. A good experience boost for a few units.

It looks like everything is pretty secure now around here though, and I'm moving some more reserves into the Singers area to react in case of invasion threats. I've also decided to bring a mini-KB down, which should be able to react to what the RN has available in the area at this point and at least slow things down if he tries anything big. I'm slowly getting some more fighters and LBA strike planes into the area, partly spurred on by the Le Triumphant incursion.

A Kate managed to drop a 250kg bomb on it this turn, but search shows no ships in the area after the replay. I can't imagine it actually went under, but who knows?

The B-29s are now being used for airfields strikes on Etorofu. Gotta like that! I need some LR CAP in here fast.

Not much else going on for the 15th.

On the 16th the turn opens with I-30, posted on the route from Diego to Colombo, firing a spread (and missing) at the LSI(L) Dunedin Star. So something is going to be coming around here. No other reason to have the good amphibs around here.

Again, not much else happening, with very light bombing in both the North and South, and our fighters staying at zero hex CAP for now.

On the 17th we did well against sweeps for the most part early, and then hit some bombers. In the end some sweeps got us back, but the totals are good for the day.

At Uruppa the DA drops forts to 4 and gets a 1:1, so this is the beginning of the end there. Hopefully I can use the LR CAP to get some supply in and keep it going there, but it's not looking good.

The 18th started with a few sweep that found our LR CAP over Uruppa. The defence held their own and stuck around. Only one sweep arrived before the bombers.

A lot of CAP was left to hit the first strikes when they came in. I'd been waiting for this for a while. The best part is that the escorts are top of the line P-47s and P38s, and we got a good ratio. Unfortunately none of the usual 2E Ventures or B-25s are there. They've been coming in unescorted and I'd hope to get a look at some.

He sweeps a lot! Continually. There are very few turns without sweeps somewhere.

It's been tough to keep up, but I think I've backed down just enough to keep groups competitive while getting a good ratio and reducing Allied pools considerably. I'm very curious what he has left now.

The Allies DA again at Uruppa and this time the wheels are definitely coming off of the defence. It's been over a month though here, and the Allies have lost a lot working the place over, so I feel okay about letting this one go.

In the air we did pretty well. Ate into the sweeps and got a few bombers in Burma, and hit some 2E going to Uruppa. Just about even in A to A on the day.

I see a large allied stack in Burma and notice that all the large ports are still in Japanese hands.

How does this large allied army get supplied? It must burn tons of it each turn.

When I press 'R',Ramree Island isn't connected to the network of rails and roads. That leaves Air supplies, which seems hardly likely?

Yeah, it is a very large army there. This is a legacy of the previous players before Canoerebel took over the game. There have been even some very good Aussie and Marine divisions there, although I think the Marines might have pulled out now.

The would usually be supplied through Ramree Island. It may not show as directly connected, but it works. Dump enough there, have a large enough pull from troops in Burma, and it will flow. It might not be consistent though, which could slow down ops occasionally.

Earlier, before I finally pulled out of Prome, this would have been a big problem for the Allies. They still base most bombers in the Arakan or farther back for easier supply drops.

Here it is!! The big one!! (I think).

Massed Allied ships have appeared just off of Hokkaido. There are subs pushing forward near Wakkanai and Bihoro, the DS moving to 3-4 hexes off of Hokkaido, and a lot of other TFs that look like ASW, combat and minesweeping.

The defences on Hokkaido are ready, but who knows how much he'll bring.

Had a bit of a bad day in the air in Burma. The Allies got 3:1 sweeping. It's strange since nothing changed form previous days when we'd ben getting even results. Guess it's just the dice, the weather, the specific order of sweeps arriving, etc.

So, this will be interesting. Is this invasion going to land on Hokkaido? Is it pushing further on?

This turn I won't set any strikes. I'll begin getting planes into position, adding the correct pilots, getting the right escorts to the right bases, and keep CAP strong at necessary airbases. There are a lot of good bases, but I realise I've got my biggest bases along the sea, and that could be a problem. Sapporo is vulnerable, and Kushiro could also be hit. Most strikes will fly from Ominato, Hachinohe or Hakodate, but I'll need close LR CAP.

It is Hokkaido. Not reading CR's AAR, but everything points to that imho. Land based air covering CV task forces is very over rated. A 1000 fighter CAP+ is doable.

At least there is some hope of kamikzes in the future...

This is it! The first time I've ever faced an invasion of the Home Islands. Dan moves fast, and doesn't mess around. Right in.

He most likely had a few looks at the ports of Honshu and knew my reaction would take some time if I were to make one. This is intended, as I don't want to lose 1,000 planes and the remainder of the IJN simply because I don't know what his set up is, where he's going or how to inflict some damage without getting completely minced.

I did put out some MTBs, mines, and midgets. They were all fairly ineffective, but the CD guns did their main job of inflicted disablements and disruption on enemy troop landings. That may buy me some time and I may need every day I can get in the next week or two before a decisive ground attack.

The Allies started with some light mining and then ruined my MTBs in one shot, with the AGC TF no less. Would have been sweet to hit that, but no go, alas.

Having the LBA close is a big advantage nonetheless. There are many ways he can choose to use it. I'm hoping to mix it up enough it'll be hard for him to get a handle on what to cover and what to sweep. There is one thing that surprised me and made me feel very dumb (a great play on Dan's part), but I think in the air war I can use it to my advantage.

Th Allies landed one hex outside Wakkanai with a small force, showing four units, but blocking the rail. I had three reserve divisions ready to rail in to whatever the invasion site would be. So he got me there, but the Wakanai garrison should be fairly tough, so I might be able to force the opening and reinforce by land. It'll be much dicier now though.

I have got a lot of transport ready to fly in troops and they will begin once the LR CAP is ready to go.

I tested a sweep against Toyohara and the Ki-83 did pretty well, getting about 2:1. I'll take that. The base lists 200+ fighters but I'm sure that will go up soon.

It looks like tanks were unloaded across the non-base coastline, and lots disabled. I hope so anyway.

The bombardment shows the Allies landing five divisions, including one Marine ID and one Aussie ID. A good number of tanks, and I'm sure more arty and other stuff will follow. Dan likes to keep the invasions going daily to inflict the self-harming euro bombardment.

Troops are in movement, and the strat ready IDs will get to Asahikawa and being walking up. I've got about 300AV of tanks that can move quickly there too, and bringing some base forces with CD guns along. Hopefully I'll have time to open the door.

Uruppa falls decisively today.
