I am playing a scenario (I don't want to say which one so as to not reveal any secrets), and I'd like to know if you have encountered a situation whereby the scenario designer has placed a group of ships on a plotted course (with a designated LEAD SHIP) and then have that lead ship become disabled (or sunk)? I am currently experiencing that, and with the lead ship now stationary due to damage, all of the other members of the group have all reverted to zero knots. This probably occurs because they were on a plotted course instead of a mission.

Has anyone else experienced that? If so, do those ships eventually begin moving again, or do they have to wait for the LEAD SHIP to sink before designating another new LEAD SHIP? Would this have happened if it had been issued an actual mission as opposed to merely a plotted course?

I could obviously spend hours testing all of this myself, I was just hoping to tap into the knowledge of some scenario designers who have already dealt with this to get some quick answers.

if you uncheck the slow down to maintain formation wouldn't they continue? I'd try that. it's in the group controls, right side of the UI.

The best way of avoiding that (if on the player side) is to go to unit view, select the crippled ship and hid 'd' to detach it from the group. The AI will then select a new lead ship. You could also go into the formation editor 'F4' and select a new lead ship yourself, but your best to detach the problem ship - and maybe an escort.

If the group is on an AI side, it is more of a problem. You could go into the editor and do the same, or leave it alone which simulates (I suppose) rescue efforts etc. When the problem ship sinks, the AI will pick a new lead and resume the mission (I think).

As Cik says, unchecking the 'slow down to maintain formation' is another way but sometimes the rest of the formation gets pretty wonky when you do that.

Hi Cik,

I was trying to see why this was happening for the AI player. (I am aware of how to correct it for the player side.)

nevertheless, I did try un-checking the box to see if it had any effect on the group. It did not. It seems that as long as the LEAD ship is still afloat, then it is still the LEAD SHIP, so no other ships can move until it does. I suppose that when/if it sinks, then a new LEAD SHIP will be selected.

Thanks for responding.

Hi Bart,

See my note to Cik.

I was playing the game without trying to obtain any knowledge about the other side. So, I didn't really want to do begin editing on the AI side. Eventually, when it appeared that the units were all dead in the water, I switched over and observed what was happening. That prompted my question.
