WTH is Soccer?

What Americans call football, because they have another game called Football (with rather less justification!)

As far as I know, the World Cup has never been called the "Soccer World Championships" by FIFA.

Actually "soccer" was originally English. It was an abbreviation of Association Football. It just fell out of favour in England.

Things are even more confusing here in Australia because there are four codes all vying for the use of the term "football": Rugby Union, Rugby League, Australian Rules Football and world football.

Cheers, Neilster

Trigger Happy -> RE: 2006 World Cup of FOOTBALL in Germany (6/12/2006 9:09:29 AM)

I hope Croatia gets a draw at least.

What about France vs Suisse ? France lost Djibril Cissé, France's best scorer of the qualifications, during a preliminary match against China... of all countries. It's not like Henry and Saha aren't better, cause they are, but nobody runs like Cissé. So I wonder if France will be able to perform. On paper, it's certainly one of the best teams.

pauk -> RE: 2006 World Cup of FOOTBALL in Germany (6/12/2006 10:17:02 AM)

well, Croatia is wierd team - i would not be suprised that we get a draw but screw things against Japan... eh...

as for France, on the paper they are certainly one of the best teams but i got feeling that this team is history and they won't achive a good result.

so, my bet is draw (1-1). But i'm well known as poor prognoser....[:D]

Speedysteve -> RE: 2006 World Cup of FOOTBALL in Germany (6/12/2006 11:19:32 AM)

As for France I agree Pauk. Some great players - Henry is a god IMO but they are past their pomp as a team.

I personally feel Croatia aren't the same as 10 years ago. They should quality but I doubt they'll get much further.

pauk -> RE: 2006 World Cup of FOOTBALL in Germany (6/12/2006 12:12:24 PM)

yeah that's my view too. But then again if we qualify for the next round and our most talented player Niko Kranjcar start to play soccer like i play WITP (that means brilliant[:D]) everything could happens.

Unfortunatly my second favourite team didn't qualify - Ireland. Same with Scotland. I guess i will have to cheers for England when CRO loose - if Sven doesn't screw something[:'(]

(like promoting David James as first goalkeeper[:'(][:D])

Speedysteve -> RE: 2006 World Cup of FOOTBALL in Germany (6/12/2006 12:28:00 PM)

Calamity James[:-]

Sven the Turnip[:-]

We either improve or we fail. Rather, either Sven improves or we fail

Terminus -> RE: 2006 World Cup of FOOTBALL in Germany (6/12/2006 1:07:20 PM)

Well, what can you expect with a SWEDE as a national team coach? [:'(]

Speedysteve -> RE: 2006 World Cup of FOOTBALL in Germany (6/12/2006 1:14:46 PM)

Which is why I call him the Turnip. Useless I tells you....McLaren is not much of a better choice mind you[8|]

Terminus -> RE: 2006 World Cup of FOOTBALL in Germany (6/12/2006 1:18:01 PM)

Well, we had a Swedish national coach for a few years, too... I think it's some sort of conspiracy by the Swedes to ruin other countries' teams...

Speedysteve -> RE: 2006 World Cup of FOOTBALL in Germany (6/12/2006 1:21:08 PM)

Not that you don't like Sweden thoiugh eh?[;)]

They sure don't forgot their own team. 5 defenders against 2 strikers from TnT who where playing with 10 men in the 2nd half woohaa![:D]

Terminus -> RE: 2006 World Cup of FOOTBALL in Germany (6/12/2006 5:53:31 PM)

Damn, what a game between Australia and Japan. Three Aussie goals from the 84th to 92nd minute, after the Japanese scored in the 28th minute... That's what we likes to see![8D]

Marc von Martial -> RE: 2006 World Cup of FOOTBALL in Germany (6/12/2006 5:58:06 PM)

Congrats Australia to the first ever victory in the Championships history !!!

And thanks for such a great final 10 minutes. Amazing and certainly goose bumps feeling ;). Now I know a city in Germany where the bars will have a problem with beer supplies today [:D]

Marc von Martial -> RE: 2006 World Cup of FOOTBALL in Germany (6/12/2006 5:59:37 PM)

The japanese teams practising ground is just 500 meters away from my house. I guess I'll go there later and wave my Aussie flag, LOL [;)]
