ahh, right, so i should assume after expending all armaments and eating all food, and using all fuel, red line may make a reappearance?

undercovergeek -> RE: Standardized Artwork Set (10/30/2008 4:36:14 PM)

have done these 2 again and added Soryu - so.............. Soryu, Akagi and Kaga

undercovergeek -> RE: Standardized Artwork Set (10/30/2008 5:07:40 PM)

and the yamato - for anyone out there are these too light, the standardised artwork is much darker?

undercovergeek -> RE: Standardized Artwork Set (10/30/2008 6:00:51 PM)

another thought also occurs - is there just one slot for mogami, kumano, suzuya, ibiki etc as in mogami class cruisers and if so which ship is used?

IIRC in stock there is just one slot. CHS added another art slot for the flight deck version of the class.

Just a little. We wanted a bit more contrast with respect to the background so's to bring out the detail.
[image]local://upfiles/17451/378BEADFB6C14FE49B60288B5DF84DE0.jpg[/image]

And, just a couple gratuitous, pointless, pointers, take ‘em for what they’re worth.

Art has to show up on two different panels; the nifty ones with sky & water are on the ship screen, the shils go on the combat screen. Combat screen is very dark, dark water, no sky, etc. Try to gauge your lightness/darkness, so it works on both (that’s one reason the standard panels have darker water and sky than yours).

Once you get it down, try to keep all your ships at reasonably the same value. If they are all different, your combat screen will highlight the most contrasty in a very distracting way.

I like to keep the waterline stripes in. Our Japanese are reddish, our US is blueish, the jpeg doesn’t show it well. The eye detects color difference, but also color intensity, so I use deep maroon for the Japanese waterline. Eye sees it as red, but it doesn’t register as “!!RED!!” the way a red stripe would do.

And, yeah, definitely get paint.net, it’s free, just as easy to use, and compares to MSPaint as a Porche to a donkey.

Anyhow, ciao. John

undercovergeek -> RE: Standardized Artwork Set (10/31/2008 10:54:22 AM)

ah, cool - i understand now

[image]local://upfiles/22981/74D1963801814BEE843F84A9FD9F87E1.gif[/image]

ive darkened the Yamato here, but you think it needs a darker see and a lighter sky to help with the contrast?

Do you mind me asking the source of your picture to convert to bmp?

undercovergeek -> RE: Standardized Artwork Set (10/31/2008 11:36:26 AM)

new akagi - darker looks much better.

Are you using this standardised art set for AE?

[image]local://upfiles/22981/5EB1FFF7A95A42C0A1F87E3E29789A74.gif[/image]

were flags ever flown on the ships?

Terminus -> RE: Standardized Artwork Set (10/31/2008 12:49:10 PM)

The AE art is all brand new, but it was made by the people behind the standardized artwork set.

any sneaky pics?

has the format changed at all, still 200 x 60, ship side and a background? or is it bigger and we're in for a detail extravaganza?!!

undercovergeek -> RE: Standardized Artwork Set (10/31/2008 5:35:55 PM)

ok, here are the major classes - cv, bb, ca, cl, dd in glorious technicolour - had a lot of fun doing this - cant wait to see the AE stuff

There are a few pics out there [:)] IIRC the art sizes are unchanged.

EDIT: Something I've been working on. There may be some sort of prize for the first person to i.d. her correctly*

*But probably not

Oh, lots of sneaky pics. No format change, SAIEW.

Ok, the whole thing behind a “standard” art set was to satisfy Matrix requirements for uniform scaling, uniform background, uniform intensity and saturation, uniform contrast, etc. That’s it, although Matrix did request that we not utilize dazzle cammo, because it hides detail that matrix thinks is important to the general player community.

We (the artists) agree, although we have found certain colorization vectors acceptable to Matrix which are used in AE. We have also developed about a gazillion MB of ‘after market’ pics that just drop in.

Only thing that makes it “standard” is scaling and background. Be glad to send ya the scale factors and a panel of 12 different backgrounds all with the same color/intensity/contrast values.

Anyhow, here’s ours.

you know, for a few seconds there i thought - hang on, that looks the same as mine!!!

cool pics thanks for all help

undercovergeek -> RE: Standardized Artwork Set (11/3/2008 9:56:44 PM)

out of interest, without much experience in the field - if you were to correctly scale all ships and obviously had the biggest pic for CVs just how small would a DD be next to the CV?

Terminus -> RE: Standardized Artwork Set (11/3/2008 10:25:09 PM)

Well, if you look at the pics John posted, you have your answer.

You can find out. IIRC the formula used was (ship length in feet)*0.165 + 45 pixels

that actually is the size of a dd compared to a CV? wow - i thought they would be huge

The game scale factor does make smaller ships relatively larger than an IRL linear scale would. Otherwise you probably couldn’t even see them. Here’s a Ticonderoga with a game scale Simms, a game scale Elco 77’ and a Simms and Elco rendered at actual scale.

It's purely an artwork question (an area in which "I have no talent" must be written in bold), but it might be nice to have the sides enlarged but the shills true size??

Well, there's only about a thousand pics, but ... a shopping bag filled with large denomination bills might do the trick.

Sorry, I no longer have a shopping bag. I'm divorced.

SuluSea -> RE: Standardized Artwork Set (12/4/2008 5:06:51 PM)

The artwork I see here is nothing short of fantastic. Thanks for your time and sharing, Many thanks!![&o][&o][&o]

JWE -> RE: Standardized Artwork Set (12/4/2008 8:56:03 PM)

Just wait till you see what AE has in store. There's maybe a thousand new pieces of art - all the upgrades and conversions, oh my. Then there's all the 'after market' stuff done by the artists, with camo patterns on a year to year basis. Woof !

I think only God, or maybe Kelley (TomLabel) knows just how many thousands of art options there will be. But in any case, the idea was to morph the art as ya'll morphed the ships. Think we got that done. Thanks for the kudos. We aim to serve.

TOMLABEL -> RE: Standardized Artwork Set (12/5/2008 5:11:14 AM)

Man, with all stuff done by you and Big B, I stopped counting long ago! [:D][:)][8D]

Cathartes -> RE: Standardized Artwork Set (12/5/2008 9:19:28 PM)

The AE ship art is delicious and fully satisfyin', but you will be forever wondering how they put them all together inside those little rectangles.
If you like beer and salty snacks, the ships go very well with that!

Dixie -> RE: Standardized Artwork Set (12/26/2008 5:57:09 PM)

Just because I'm bored and still waiting for AE, HMS Glenearn...

JWE -> RE: Standardized Artwork Set (12/26/2008 9:11:48 PM)

Yep, the Glens are in there. Also got some Star Lines boats that show up from time to time.

Ya'll want to see some pics? I have lots of beer and a bunch of salty snacks, and can probably skweze them into a teensy rectangle or two.

GaryChildress -> RE: Standardized Artwork Set (1/21/2009 4:21:08 AM)

Cathartes is obviously the king of plane sides. I was wondering how his plane sides would look sharpened a little more. What do others think? On the right is the original and on the left has been sharpened using PSP. Just curious.

NOTE: JPG format adds distortion to the pictures.

Terminus -> RE: Standardized Artwork Set (1/21/2009 5:13:52 AM)

This is just my take on it, but I think the sharpened sides look too "defined" somehow. Not to my taste.
