Bucks -> Harpoon 3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test (3/6/2007 6:27:53 AM)

Hello All,

After Dale's trivia questions I thought I'd introduce a "Platform Photo ID Test" series. I've been working on some display related things for the HUD3 and decided I could make use of the images here to bend your minds a little. I'll start off with resonably easy "tests" to encourage EVERYBODY to give it a try.

I'll post an initial image, that at first only reveals part of the platform I would like an ID on. I'll slowly reveal the images until we receive a correct answer or I show the whole photo and provide the answer due to zero correct responses.

There are no prizes but I'll keep a "ladder" of successful responses and the leader will obviously have bragging rights around the forum. I'll award 2 points for a correct answer, and possibly split the points for close guesses etc. If competing numbers of forum members don't take up the opportunity I'll call an end to it after we've run a few rounds.

GUIDELINES

1. The winner of the previous round is asked to remove themself from the competition for 1 round.

2. Unless otherwise stated at the commencement of a round contestants are limited to three (3) attempts at nominating the correct answer.

3. Long time or what could be considered "expert" users within the community are asked to compete in a spirit of inclusiveness. My intention is to run a friendly comp where everybody (yes even really new Harpooners) has an opportunity to compete in a friendly environment and doesn't feel overwhelmed while competing.

4. A brief explanation of why you think the pic is whatever platform you nominate would be appreciated to further community participation and the education process in general.

5. Always remember to Have Fun.

6. An ineligible player can PM the answer to me to score a bonus point.

Bucks -> Harpoon 3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 001 (3/6/2007 6:33:41 AM)

Ok guys here's the first of the Platform Photo ID tests. The initial photo reveals the stern of the vessel I'm looking for an ID on. The photo was taken from the periscope of a SSBN. I'll reveal more of the photo shortly. To win correctly ID the class of vessel.

danrhayes -> RE: Harpoon 3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 001 (3/6/2007 7:11:05 AM)

Looks like the arse end of a Perry to me. LWB version. That would probably too easy I suppose. Have to hit the books when I get home.

Daniel

Bucks -> RE: Harpoon 3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 001 (3/6/2007 8:04:19 AM)

Bucks -> RE: Harpoon 3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 002 (3/6/2007 8:20:45 AM)

Ok seeing how Dan just knocked that one off in short order, I'll make this a little harder (I hope). This is part of an aircraft that's seen service in a host of air forces and naval air arms worldwide. I swear Dan if you get this as quickly mate I'll start posting photos of rivets... [;)]

Dimitris -> RE: Harpoon 3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 002 (3/6/2007 9:24:11 AM)

Looks like an A-4 Skyhawk.

Bucks -> RE: Harpoon 3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 002 (3/6/2007 9:32:02 AM)

Ok So the HHQ guys want to dominate the ladder... [;)]

Well done Sunburn, you're spot on with the platform, now I wished I'd asked for the model as well [:)]

Ok I'll add some rules for the comp, stuff like winners are ineligible for the next round, number of guesses allowed etc. If anyone would like to make suggestions regarding this please feel free.

Darren

Bucks -> RE: Harpoon 3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 003 (3/6/2007 10:08:09 AM)

Not being hopeful of anything testing anyone out anymore, we'll move back to ships. This is part of a Russian ship... I'd like the Type CG/DDG/FFG etc and also the Class name.

Flankerk -> RE: Harpoon 3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 003 (3/6/2007 11:04:34 AM)

I vote for a BPK as class, reckon possible Kashin mod.

Bucks -> RE: Harpoon 3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 003 (3/6/2007 11:26:05 AM)

Correct Mod Kashin class DDG.

2 Points to Flankerk

Could it be a French Military transporter? Airbus 320? The French use the flag instead of the cocarde for non-camouflage painted aircraft.

Bucks -> RE: Harpoon 3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 004 (3/6/2007 1:18:02 PM)

Taitennek, part of the answer is correct, that is the type of aircraft - transport, sorry no points for that mate. Here's the next part of the aircraft in question:

Bucks -> RE: Harpoon 3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 004 (3/6/2007 4:24:15 PM)

At last I seem to have slowed the rush for points. Here's part three of the mystery "hauler".

Flankerk -> RE: Harpoon 3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 004 (3/6/2007 4:33:47 PM)

Can we post though if have already got one [:)]

Dimitris -> RE: Harpoon 3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 004 (3/6/2007 4:58:24 PM)

That last cockpit pic is the giveaway. C-130 in the old-style markings of the Australian AF.

Bucks -> RE: Harpoon 3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 004 (3/6/2007 5:16:59 PM)

Flank you were asked to excuse yourself after you won round three (3) see guidelines above. Now we are about to have a winner for Round 4 you're back in the race.

Bucks -> RE: Harpoon 3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 004 (3/6/2007 5:30:01 PM)

More points for Sunburn, must be all the work he's put into his Harpoon Encyclopedia paying off here. He was right, it's an early 80's RAAF C-130. I'd guess that it was an "E" model, ok I'll look for something else to test you out, then I have to leave the PC for about 90 mins, so you'll have some time to think about your responses.

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 005 - **BONUS ROUND** (3/6/2007 5:56:57 PM)

Ok on to Round 5 and I'll move back to ships. I have a bonus operating here with an extra point available.

CLUE: Operated by NATO member country.

REQUIRED: I'd like the class name, vessel type, and operating Nation.

BONUS: 3 pts awarded if all 3 pieces of required information are provided.

INELIGIBLE: Sunburn.

FransKoenz -> RE: Harpoon 3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 004 (3/6/2007 6:34:25 PM)

Nah. You gave me info that confused me when I sent in my first clue. Right plane, wrong airforce[&:]. Have you smoked dope?[:D]

Bucks -> RE: Harpoon 3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 004 (3/6/2007 7:50:22 PM)

I'm not going to accept blame being placed on the admin of the "competition" just because we have a member of the Dutch "cafe" scene taking guesses [:'(].

Nice try Taitennek [;)]

Darren

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 005-2 - **BONUS ROUND** (3/6/2007 7:54:25 PM)

Ok so while I've been out we seem to have reached a point where nobody is prepared to take a stab at guessing any of the 3 required answers. You don't need to get all three right to gain points if you think you know any of them give it a stab and you may pick up a point.

Here's the next section of the ship for Round 5:

[image]local://upfiles/21733/8EB970D8604A40A086B65983CB0ADA44.jpg[/image]

Flankerk -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 005-2 - **BONUS ROUND** (3/6/2007 8:17:44 PM)

Nah stumped. Reckon its a french style turret with ASROC. Vague possibility of Baleares class, but the turret doesn't look right.

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 005-2 - **BONUS ROUND** (3/6/2007 8:30:27 PM)

No Prize Flank, not a French turret although from a country geographically close. Nothing for the Baleares class either. Two attempts left mate.

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 005-1 - **BONUS ROUND** (3/6/2007 8:52:32 PM)

Next "clue" for round 5:

Canadian Restigouche DDE

Daniel

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 005-1 - **BONUS ROUND** (3/7/2007 8:33:22 AM)

Good effort Dan, you score the max three points for that one.
