Sorry about being away for a couple of days, real life has intervened.

Anyway we have a winner for the last test, Dagooz has answered correctly by naming the Shamsher (Jaguar IM). Dagooz scores 2 points for the correct answer, and I'm awarding a bonus point to Dan as he PMed the answer to me well before I received the correct public response.

Here's the full photo of the Shamsher:

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 011-1 (3/12/2007 11:01:37 AM)

Ok after a brief "intermission" lets get back to some clues for Round 11.

You are visting a NATO airbase during the late 70's early 80's, can you identify this aircraft parked on the flightline?

CLUE: Nil

REQUIRED:operating Country and aircraft name.

BONUS: Nil

INELIGIBLE: Dagooz

Sirius. -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 011-1 (3/12/2007 12:43:01 PM)

Not sure here, how about a F-100 Super Sabre operated by Turkey[:)]

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 011-2 (3/12/2007 1:45:04 PM)

Nice try Sirius, but no prize mate. As a clue I'll state now it's not an aircraft of US origin, you have 2 remaining chances left. Here's another clue:

Sirius. -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 011-2 (3/12/2007 1:50:05 PM)

drat how about a French Mirage III ?

FransKoenz -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 011-2 (3/12/2007 2:26:42 PM)

French Dassault Etendard IVM?

On the first pic I see someething that looks like a hook for aircraft-landing.

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 011-3 (3/12/2007 3:58:19 PM)

Sorry gents, 2 very good attempts but we're not there yet. Here's clue no.3:

Taitennek, you do in fact see an arrester hook. Most military aircraft carry one even if they are not carrier based. Here's a link to a story about an emergency landing conducted with the aid of land based arrestor system. Aircraft concerned is an RAAF F-111C.

There's also a full pictorial of the arrested crash landing here:

Sirius. -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 011-2 (3/12/2007 5:29:49 PM)

Last guess its Belguim and proberly a Hawker Hunter,

Flankerk -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 011-2 (3/12/2007 6:12:37 PM)

Definitely Belgium [:)]
Mirage 5 possibly?

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 011-2 (3/12/2007 6:27:25 PM)

We have a winner. Well done Flanker, although I'm paying a bonus point to Dagooz as he PM'ed me the correct answer.

I think I'll update the rules so that ineligible participants can score a bonus point if they PM the answer from now on.

Here's the pic of the Mirage 5 of the Belgium Air Force:

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 012-1 (3/12/2007 6:54:20 PM)

Ok on to Round 12. You're a USN pilot and have been vectored to make an intercept of an unknown aircraft. What is it?

CLUE: Nil

REQUIRED: Aircraft designation and name.

BONUS: Nil

INELIGIBLE: Flankerk

Dagooz -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 012-1 (3/12/2007 7:43:42 PM)

Ilyushin Il-20 Coot. Initially I thought May but it lacks the distinctive tail 'boom'.

Sirius. -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 012-1 (3/12/2007 7:58:12 PM)

how about a Cub

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 012-1 (3/13/2007 4:44:35 AM)

Dagooz is on a roll he scores the 2 points for correctly identifying the IL-20 Coot.

His observation of the lack of a MAD system as exists on the IL-38 May was right on the money.

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 012-1 (3/13/2007 6:12:48 AM)

Sirius your guess wasn't bad, but the An-12 Cub normally sports a rear turret or observer's station. Here's a poor quality image of the Cub's tail.

Cheers

Darren

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 013-1 (3/13/2007 6:18:25 AM)

I'll stick with the current rotation and move onto the first submarine next round. So, you're an observer on an RAAF P-3W Orion and you spot this ship.

CLUE: Nil

REQUIRED: Vessel name and operating country.

BONUS: Nil

INELIGIBLE: Dagooz

Sirius. -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 013-2 (3/13/2007 4:08:54 PM)

Chakri Naruebet of the Thai Navy [8D]

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 013-2 (3/13/2007 4:58:19 PM)

I'll pay it but I'm "suss" on this one. No comments to how you identified it Sirius? [;)]

You score two points, here's the full photo. I'll look for a suitable sub for you guys to try your collective hands at.

Dagooz -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 013-2 (3/13/2007 5:07:53 PM)

Damn, I had ruled that out since I could'nt find any pictures showing the stern...

Sirius. -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 013-2 (3/13/2007 5:10:48 PM)

Hehe yeah I know the feeling I went by the life raft stowage next to the helo from some pics I found

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 014-1 (3/13/2007 5:28:24 PM)

Ok let's try our first submarine identification test. Again you're an observer aboard an ASW patrol aircarft and have come across this submarine running on the surface.

CLUE: Nil

REQUIRED: 1.>Submarine Class name, 2.>country of origin (construction) and 3.>operating country.

BONUS: I'll award a point for each of the 3 "required" above if anyone answers all three correctly, I'll award a bonus point for a total of 4pts for this Round.

INELIGIBLE: Sirius - (can PM answer for a 2 point award)

Dagooz -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 014-1 (3/13/2007 6:42:53 PM)

Not that I am complaining but was it not only for one round that I should be ineligible? I think you meant Sirius[;)]

Dimitris -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 014-1 (3/13/2007 6:43:59 PM)

Looks like an Echo-class SSGN. That would mean USSR as constructor & operating country.

Sirius. -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 014-1 (3/13/2007 6:45:39 PM)

A nice stingray torp would rip it apart [:)]

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 014-1 (3/13/2007 8:00:59 PM)

Yeah sorry Dagooz my mistake mate you're in the comp, Sirius has to take a break for a round.

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 014-2 (3/13/2007 8:04:02 PM)

Ok Sirius is obviously correct in stating a Stingray would take a chunck out of it. Although if it did maybe there'd be an "international incident"...

Anyway here's clue #2:

Darren

Dagooz -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 014-1 (3/13/2007 8:53:51 PM)
