Dimitris -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 006-1 (3/7/2007 10:24:48 AM)

It's a CH-53 Stallion helicopter. Insufficient visual data to identify precise subvariant (although paint _looks_ like a CH-53E).

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 006-1 (3/8/2007 7:01:33 AM)

Looks like I'll have to dig deep to find something to test Dimitris out. More points to Sunburn who now leads the comp. Here's the full version of the CH-53:

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 007-1 (3/8/2007 7:24:28 PM)

You are a trainee Soviet submarine officer, your instructor has "demanded" that you comit the visual images of those nasty nasty capitalist warships to memory. Can you identify this vessel before the "instructor" returns or are you taking a cheap flight to Siberia?

CLUE: Nil

REQUIRED: Type (FFG/DDG etc), Individual Class name.

BONUS: Nil

INELIGIBLE: Sunburn

Sirius. -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 007-1 (3/8/2007 7:47:48 PM)

Leander Class frigate or Type 12 Rothesay class[8D]
the anchor type is AC.14 type and the cable is 38mm dia of forged steel [8D][8D]

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 007-1 (3/8/2007 8:24:44 PM)

I said Soviet submarine officer candidate, not ex-RN anchor cable experts. [;)]

Ok Paul forgot about you lurking there, you better forward your service history so I know what not to include you in with these, anything RN since????

I'll pay double points if you or anyone else can tell me the type of Leander (1, 2B, 3A etc) as I reveal more of the ship. Sirius has 2 points and he should pick up the double here.

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 007-3 (3/8/2007 9:30:04 PM)

Ok that radar's not much of a clue here's some more of the ship.

Flankerk -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 007-3 (3/8/2007 9:55:40 PM)

Radar would probably make it a Godvari.

Sirius. -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 007-3 (3/8/2007 9:57:44 PM)

Bucks the radar shot is of a Godavari, the second is of a different class of ship which I know and have served on thats all I'll say [8D]

Apart from the fc director is a type 903/4 for GWS.22 and the after mast radar is a type 1010 IFF Interrigator, btw I'm still serving and a Radar and weps specialist hehe[8D]

Good pick up mate although it's not from a Godavari, sorry must have mixed my "jigsaw" pieces up...

Your "nick" has a connection with the former colony of New South Wales and...

Here's a part of the ship that every good Soviet Sub Officer would be concerned about...

Sirius. -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 007-3 (3/8/2007 10:31:00 PM)

Its a Batch 2 TA (Towed Array) Leander called HMS Sirius F 40 I think , btw if the pic was taken in 1988 I was the leading hand of the sharp pointy bit hehe

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 007-3 (3/8/2007 11:09:23 PM)

It's a Leander 2TA correct Sirius, wrong individual ship though mate, she's HMS Phobe. I'll give you the bonus, so you get 4pts mate.

Flankerk -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 007-3 (3/8/2007 11:55:09 PM)

Whats the chances of a dubious bonus point, for indentifying the radar that isn't on the photograph above ? [:)]

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 007-3 (3/9/2007 12:11:36 AM)

Flank, keep it in mind and I'll use the ship it's from the round after next. If you get the ship right I'll pay the bonus point. so stay tuned for Round 9.

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 008 - 1 (3/9/2007 12:22:50 AM)

Ok again you're an officer candidate for the Soviet Submarine service. What is this aircraft that the photo shows part of?

danrhayes -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 008 - 2 (3/9/2007 4:27:34 AM)

Well its an Atlantic and from the shade of grey I think its one of the Deutsche Marine's.

Daniel

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 008 - 2 (3/9/2007 5:47:03 AM)

Nice pick up Dan, you weren't the first. I had a non-competing member of the forum PM me the correct answer. Regardless since you are part of the comp, you pick up the 2 points for the correct answer and the lead on the ladder as well.

Here's the full pic of the Atlantique:

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 009-1 (3/9/2007 5:56:59 AM)

Ok I'm trying to keep the competition moving along at a reasonable pace. Flanker wanted a chance at picking up bonus points for IDing a radar the round before last.

OK I'll upload the same radar but from a different photo. Bonus points apply.

CLUE:Nil

REQUIRED:Vessel class name & operating country

BONUS: Extra point for correct identification of the vessels's primary radar. (first clue)

Perhaps a "standard M Frigate"?

Dimitris -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 009-3 (3/9/2007 1:29:01 PM)

That's the lead-ship of the Kortenaer-class frigates, when she was still in service with the Dutch navy as F-807 Kortenaer. She currently serves in the Hellenic navy as F-462 Kountouriotis.

The radar depicted is the primary long-range 2D AS radar, Signaal's LW08. Pretty good set for its era, but somewhat low data-rate (slow rotation) and usually supplemented by faster-rate, shorter-range sets in order to cope with pop-ups.

But it also could be the F 801 Abu Dhabi [ex F816, HrMs Abraham Crijnssen], or the F 802 Al Emirat [ex F811, HrMs Piet Heyn] .

I do not think that is possible now to name the vessel on the picture. It was the first thing what came in my mind.

I have seen some of them in Dutch harbours.

This a Dutch Forum with lots of nice pics of all kind of Dutch naval vessels. Partly in English.

I expected a little competition from our Dutch members and our Greek photo ID expert on the list. [:)]

Sunburn scores the maximum three points for correctly identifying the lead ship of the Kortenaer Class, (F-807 Kortenaer) and it's primary air search radar the Signaal LW 08.

I'd like to thank Taitennek for passing along the link for the Dutch naval photos site.

Cheers

Now you're filling the shoes of an anti-aircraft gunner, your Sargeant has asked that you learn to identify the following aircaft.

CLUE: Operated by air forces on 4 continents.

REQUIRED: Aircraft service name (the name given by the service that operates this aircraft) and tied in with that, the operating country itself.

BONUS: Nil

Oh thats one distinctive fin. Better give some other folks a go. Answer by PM :)

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 010-1 (3/10/2007 11:24:45 AM)

Dan's submitted the correct answer already and in a gentlemenly spirit he's deferred his public answer for now. He's right with the fin, it's very distinctive, so the first clue is actually a dead giveaway if you know your attack aircraft.

Darren

Dagooz -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 010-1 (3/10/2007 3:10:40 PM)

I'd say a Jaguar of the RAF. Not sure which version.

Bucks -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 010-2 (3/10/2007 9:31:58 PM)

Dagooz, nice try mate, but it's not the RAF and that might just cause an issue with the naming of the aircraft. Sorry even though you're so close it hurts, no prizes for your excellent effort. Here's another clue.

Dagooz -> RE: H3 ANW Platform Photo ID Test - 010-2 (3/10/2007 9:49:05 PM)

Only guessing now and only from the naming part... Indian. Name would be Shamser.
