The mean remains at 41.26 with 66 people contributing to the database.

Are any females (no jokes please) playing this simulation?

Kevin

Well, I don't know, but you may add a 1 in the column of gay AT players. [8D]

Saedor -> RE: Age Group Playing AT (12/23/2007 4:26:31 AM)

Hiya... new here...

I'm 42, from Indiana, USA.

With regard to younger gamers... I have a 14 year old son that plays many of my wargames with me (both computer and miniatures games). He is a big fan of the Civilization and Empire Earth games too. The biggest drawback for him is the learning curve of many computer wargames. He's just now learning AT (the random scenario generator is great for that) but I also have Battlefront, TOAWIII and World at War. Of these three, World at War is the only one he plays, the other two being a bit difficult for him to pick up. He COULD learn them, it's true, but the time involved is more than he's willing to spend.

After all, I have about 30 years worth of experience in wargaming, he doesn't, so it's much easier for me to pick up concepts than him.

ravinhood -> RE: Age Group Playing AT (12/23/2007 4:36:10 AM)

It's a shame Saedor there aren't more simple and easy wargames for the youth to get into these days on the computer. It seems they made most of the good ones in the early and mid 80's. Today it's about complexity and details and 100 weeks of gameplay just to play one game out. You might try to find him a copy of Hasbros Axis and Allies to try out and Stratego computer game is quite fun still. Even Battleship is still fun. As many years as I have into wargaming I still don't like the more complex and monster type wargames coming out. Oh Carriers at War should be easy for him to get into and play. Have you introduced him to the Combat Mission series. Even my son will play that one with me and just scoffs at most of the rest of these advanced wargames. He loves Master of Magic, but, I can't get him to play anything but the easy difficulty. He likes making all those neat items and going around stomping everything in his path. He doesn't like challenge as much as I do, shame really. Even though I like simple to play wargames I still want them to be challenging and at least appear like they might win against me. You could also get him to try out Killerbees new versions of The Perfect General and Empire Deluxe. These are very simple easy games to get into. Just point click attack and move with a bit of opportunity fire and pre-fire phases. Not hard at all I don't think, but, a lot of fun to play for the young I would say.

but, us folks down here in Texas . . .

As I understand it, this part of the country is actually called South Oklahoma.

Also, had a friend from Dallas who would say "You can tell a Texan a mile away. Get up close, and you can't tell a Texan a damn thing"!

Could this be true?

Regards, RhinoBones

Well it has been said often down here in Texas that the only reason Texas is still part of the US is because Oklahoma sucks. ;)

Nevada, U.S.A.
We act like were southern, and think we are Yankee's.
Those of us who were born here anyway, not the 40% of the population who moved in from California.
Not sure what they are yet.

Mikekiller16 -> RE: Age Group Playing AT (12/23/2007 8:31:49 PM)

I am 42, but my wife says i have 10 when she look at me while playing wargames; so i answer her always to waste less money in creams and more in games to feel younger...

Well, to me it's just showing that wargames aren't getting saturated into the younger peoples view. Matrixgames should send things to grade schools and jr. highs to promote history learnin say the 6th and 7th grades to introduce them to wargames. This is another reason I crusade for retail store boxed games, kids just don't do searches for Matrixgames or probably even wargaming sites. They need to SEE the product in stores and in their classrooms. Perhaps Matrixgames could make some deal with 6th and 7th grade classes to post some advertisement on their bulletin boards and emphasis their FREE games they have for download?? Afterall once you've played SPWAW you're hooked. ;)

With schools arresting children for bringing in flatware knives to cut their lunch with and rewritting history itself. I am guessing most of them would have apoplexy if someone tried to introduce historical wargames to these kids... I can see those nitwits frothing at the mouth at the idea!!!

Actually wargaming is sometimes used in schools to illustrate history. It's usually done using miniatures rules rather than computers though. Miniatures rules tend to be easier to learn and more flexible, as well as being faster to play (important when each class is only an hour or two). Miniatures also give a greater visual and hands-on effect.

Fred98 -> RE: Age Group Playing AT (12/28/2007 2:03:59 AM)

48

Started with 1/72 scale Airfix plastic soldiers

Punzer -> RE: Age Group Playing AT (12/28/2007 8:24:54 AM)

I'll turn 42 this winter.

A t-shirt once read: The older I get, the better I was.
It's so true! Hehe.

Twotribes -> RE: Age Group Playing AT (12/28/2007 11:20:33 AM)

50... USA...

Think of it, with the horrible history education in the US and else where, even WW2 games should be fun for the young ones, I mean they have no Idea who won or what happened.

BULLDOGINTHEUK -> RE: Age Group Playing AT (12/28/2007 11:35:48 AM)

37, United Kingdom. Have always loved wargames, especially Hearts of Iron 1 & 2. My first strategy game I got really hooked on was Colonial Conquest for the Amiga as it was turnbased hotseat so my friends could play.

Terl -> RE: Age Group Playing AT (12/28/2007 1:00:37 PM)

52 but going up in April. I got started with little plastic soldiers just like joe98. My first computer wargame was Decision in the Desert on the Apple IIC. I played that one for hours and hours. Of course I had many wargames in Grafenwoehr and Hohenfels and many other fun training areas.

kevinkins -> RE: Age Group Playing AT (12/28/2007 5:43:44 PM)

jadam12 -> RE: Age Group Playing AT (12/28/2007 9:43:25 PM)

I've already reported my age (19), now I'll contribute to the nationality database, I'm from Hungary.

Lipa -> RE: Age Group Playing AT (12/29/2007 2:12:17 AM)

I'm 24, from Slovenia (a special HI! to neighbor Jadam12![;)]).

I used to spend lots of time on Civ and especially Steel Panthers: World at War (probably my favorite game), but just recently I came across TOAW and AT - and they both attracted my attention. I think this genre is exactly what I've been looking for all these years![:)]

My family (mother's side) all came from the Zala region and immigrated to America around 1900. Can't say that my blood is complete Hungarian, but my heart is in the country of origin. The other half of my origin is Zagreb.

SMK-at-work -> RE: Age Group Playing AT (12/29/2007 11:07:33 AM)

I've already reported my age, but like Joe98 & Terl I started with Airfix plastics - about 35 years agop in my case.

I never gave up figure gaming and have been getting back into plastic 1/72nd over hte last 2-3 years with some of hte excellent stuff that's coming out these days - anciets for me but there's ranges in everythign up to modern conflicts - "urban guerillas" and US marines, etc...see www.plasticsoldierreview.com
