Here we are one day from a BIG surprise!

n01487477 -> RE: WABBITS! (3/10/2009 5:43:49 AM)

I'm no tactical genius or genius in any sense of the word, but why are you giving Dan 2 days to move his airforce to kill a load of TT's or spear a load of troops on airtransports your direction ? I'd have thought that hitting the beaches the same day or one day out seems to be logical ... or am I once again missing the point - there are many airfields he can take off from (Madras/Bangalore)- and I doubt he cares about whether he has Av support there... his fury will be sublime.

Sorry maybe I should go back and read the operational planning for this gig...[&:]

John 3rd -> RE: WABBITS! (3/10/2009 6:15:38 AM)

Hey Damian.  Good Questions and comments!

I am guessing as to when the Invasion Force is spotted to commence operations.  That is why I am predicting the turn after next.  I cannot imagine how he won't spot the Invasion Force on the 3rd when it is only 4 hexes from the target and 6-7 hexes from Columbo where his search planes are.  IF the weather is predicted to be bad then I will delay a day.  Everything is day-by-day...

You know...thinking on it...why not wait to open up until the day AFTER I am spotted?  He will only have seen the shipping and have no CLUE the entire Fleet is surrounding India!  That does make a bit more sense.  Anyone have any thoughts on that?

Will have to guess as to the 3 Convoys that I-48 has spotted.

Speaking of that SS, I am hereby promoting the Captain of this SS a rank as well as the entire crew.  They just SANK their 4th AK on this war patrol.  The sub is out of Torps and almost out of gun ammo.  Well done to that ship and crew!

John 3rd -> November 1, 1944 VP--Industry (3/10/2009 6:59:09 AM)

November 1, 1944
Victory Points and Economic Summary

Victory Points:

Score
Japan 57,032 (Up 573 Points)
Allies 78,737 (Up 5,437 Points)

Strategic Losses 14,754 (Up 1,780)

For the eighth month in a row I GAIN victory points. Considering everything...

Allies take Hong Kong, beseige Canton, and advance up the China coast with millions of troops...it is an unstoppable tidal wave.

Strategic losses continue to mount and my fighter defense is collapsing due to the Double Fighter Sweeps coming from Tori Shima and Iwo Jima.

All month is spent preparing for the invasion of Western India. Operation Furouka-Go is about to commence and it is guaranteed to be FUN! The Fleet and 200,000 troops will attempt to make the end of 1944 one to remember. BANZAI!!!

Ships Sunk
Japan 1,098—10,630 VP (up 566)—I lost 62 ships during October. Nearly all of these losses come from attempts to move troops or supplies into or from Formosa and China. These were my losses: 29 AK, 2 TK, 8 AP, 4 MSW, 8 PC, 3 AR, CVE Unyo, CL Yura, and 6 DD.

Major Japanese Vessels Sunk to Date---CV Junyo, Hiyo, Hiryu, and Katsuragi, BB Fuso, Yamashiro, Mutsu, Nagato, Musashi, and Yamato, BC Kirishima, Haruna, and Kongo, 6 CA , 15 CL, 114 DD, and 48 SS.

Allies 1,395---15,389 VP (up 515)---Dan lost a much more respectable 41 ships in October. Exact Losses are: 20 AK, 2 LSM, 3 AP, 3 MSW. BB HOwe, 4 DD, and 8 SS (S-18, Spirella, Sunfish, Supreme, Sablefish, Finback, Spark, and Sawfish)

Major Allied Vessels Sunk---CVs Enterprise, Lexington, Hornet, Wasp and Intrepid, CVL Langley, 6 CVE, BBs Colorado, West Virginia, Idaho, Tennessee, Arizona, Prince of Wales, Alabama, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Mississippi, BC Renown, Howe, 15 CA, 10 CL, 107 DD, and 84 SS.

Sinking 8 SS in one month is my best total yet.

ASW Attacks for October:
ASW Task Force: 27 (Up 17)
ASW Land-Based Air: 30 (up 7)

These are attacks that scored damage on an Allied SS. The fight is fast and furious right now. I sank an average of 1 Allied SS every 4 days and severely damaging another every 3-4 days. Seemingly this makes no difference but they are sinking!

Manchukuo Garrison---9,469---UP 728---(8,000 Needed)
Political Points---2,831

Units Transferred:
Moved an Inf Brigade to Formosa

Industrial Report
Supply 976,848--Down 3,900
Fuel 1,341,258—Up 54,000
Manpower 736 (1,335,258)—Up 13,000
Heavy Industry 12,434 (356,170)—HI Down 427 and surplus UP 66,000
Resources 10,027 (1,074,454)—Lost 1,110 Resource Centers---Strategic Bombing
Oil 1,481 (445,764)—Down 231 Oil Centers

Mixed economic bag as normal. Supply stabilized a bit bit is terrible. Very scarce. I’ve got buckets of fuel and not enough oil. Normal story there but I have managed to run more convoys in and bring fuel out to Cebu, Davao, and Soerabaja. Dan’s Strategic Bombing continues handing it to the resources. Don’t have a crisis here yet but trouble is on the horizon (figure 6 months or so).

Shipyards
Naval 1,179 (2,964)
Merchant 981 (2)
Repair 1,336

Carriers
Ikoma----Completed and racing to join Operation Downfall...

5 DD were completed last month with another 5 DD to be done this month.

I have turned off about 75% of shipbuilding and have completely shutdown Merchant building this month. The ASW ships are still rolling off the ways so I’ll keep some of the naval yards running.

Weapons
Armament 787 (21,654)
Vehicles 179 (15,546)

Due to Damian's suggestion I have shutdown most these areas to help HI stockpile.

Aircraft
Engines 2,125 (Down 4)
Assembly 1,619+(12-Rd)

So-so news here as engines stayed steady but production dropped by 149 for the month. Considering the bombardment this is to be expected.

Engine Production
Mitsubishi 690(130)—Need 946—260 in Pool
Nakajima 1,355(196)—Need 1,080---2,642 in Pool
Kawasaki 000---Need 24---67 in Pool
Aichi 80---Need 90---288 in Pool

Mitsubishi production grew but surplus is dropping. Have nearly all bombers off right now. Increased the Naka pool by 350 over the previous month.

When I play the Allies, there is nothing that makes me feel happy that the Japanese doing offensives in China. Those divisions are not guarding Iwo, Saipan, Tinian, Okinawa..... [:)]

Sorry for the hickjacking [:'(]

Really? I suppose if you are confident of a stalemate maybe that would make you happy, but I think if I was Allied I would hate to lose China because then a lot of ground forces are free for Iwo, Saipan etc in late 43 when they are needed there the most. And I think AARs have shown a well planned Japanese attack can succeed in China within the first 1-2 years of the war.

you can nevertheless NEVER release more than 5 divisions from a restricted command due to the political point situation. I know that some mods give you 100pp per month though. With 50, you´re stuck with 5 divs A YEAR and you only get 5 if you don´t change the comannd of any daitai or change captains, TF comanders etc...

veji1 -> RE: Southern China and ASW Fighting (3/10/2009 1:32:06 PM)

All you have to do is change the command of the most battered division you can find an you save PPs...

FOW -> RE: November 1, 1944 VP--Industry (3/10/2009 2:19:47 PM)

Landing at Triv with just 1 LCU will deny intel to the Allies - as the combat reports will only show that one unit.
Once the base is yours you can unload all those other units without giving any intel at all (until reconned).
Thus the threat to the whole of the continent will be masked until your armour units appear at bases all over southern India.

John, what is your Home Islands Oil situation? It looks like you can still squeeze Oil shipments through from Southern Borneo and Java, via the Phillipines, right?

It sounds like Palembang is closed, and he is working on Brunei.

agreed, but it will take a lot of reconning to accumulate the amount of information provided by the ground combat screen when taking the base with the whole set of units, will it not ?

John 3rd -> RE: November 1, 1944 VP--Industry (3/10/2009 4:33:07 PM)

Brad--I have been running a convoy a week into Japan with an average of 60,000 Oil and 20,000 Resources.  There is one unloading now with another departing Legaspi.  There is enough oil for about 40 days at this point.  My HI surplus took a massive jump last month to this month.  IF I can get a few more convoys in then I should have enough HI Stockpile to carry me 2 months AFTER I am cutoff from the DEI.

STAND BY FOR NEWS....

John 3rd -> Discovery (3/10/2009 4:49:35 PM)

November 2, 1944
1101 Hours (local time)

...275 miles SW of Trivandrum India...

Ensign Andrew Samual Simpson Breckington is fighting the controls of his bucking PBM Mariner as it flies through yet another rain squall on the 325th day of his recon duty from Columbo. Until this moment it is the most boring duty in the world.

The plane flies out of the storm to find itself directly over a Carrier TF. "What the HELL?" Ensign ASS Breckington exclaims.

"Hey Sparks--do we have any Carriers in the Indian Ocean?"

"No Sir. The radio keeps claiming our CVs are where the war is about 3,5000 miles due east of here Sir."

"What do you we have down below us then?" The answer comes as AA Fire suddenly springs to life from the startled TF below. The carrier, which DOES look an awful like one of the Indomitable Class, begins to turn into the wind to hastily launch Fighters.

"Holy Winston Churchill!" cries out the Navigator as he quickly scans the formation. "Ensign I see one large CV--its looks like one of ours....hmmm...that must be their CV Taiho, 2 smaller Jap Flattops, 2-3 cruisers, and about a dozen DDs course 025 speed is about 14 Kts."

The AA fire is really cooking right now and Zeros can been seen clearly climbing towards the amphibian. "Sparks send that and our position right NOW! Man your guns and lets get the Hell out of here!"

"ENEMY CARRIER TASK FORCE SPOTTED 325 MILES WSW OF COLUMBO. TASK FORCE COMPRISES 3 CV 3CA 12DD COURSE 025 SPEED 20 KNOTS."

John 3rd -> Furyouka-Go (3/10/2009 5:28:44 PM)

He ONLY spotted a CV TF.  Chances are he'll not react or go 'what the Hell?' and wait to see what happens or he'll panic.

That will most certainly happen with the next turn because I will land at Addu and Trivandrum with the Invasion Force ONE day from landing at that point.

I just sent the turn and DIDN'T even MENTION the spotting.  Told him I THOUGHT he was done with the right hooks...grrr...  Perhaps my downplaying it will keep him from reacting for the day.

PLEASE:  No one say anything to him on his AAR!  He will have no clue how crazy this plan is until 2-3 days from now.

ALL CV to search and attack next turn.  Fast Task Force racing for Trivandrum...

Stand By fellas this should be a wild-and-crazy run for the next few turns...

John 3rd -> Furyouka-Go (3/10/2009 5:41:29 PM)

Opening moves for the Carriers and Invasion Forces. It is my hope to blanket his entire shipping lane from just south of the Aden Channel to Ceylon to Sumatra tomorrow. ANYTHING moving in it SHOULD be attacked.

BANZAI!

Operation Downfall
November 3, 1944

(Off the Coast of Trivandrum, India)

The old R Class battleships have been relegated to convoy duty since the war swept into Malaya and southern China. This morning finds the HMS Ramilles sailing with a convoy of 6 AK at a leisurely 10 Kts as the Captain stares at the sighting report from the previous day.

TO: All Commanders, India Command
FROM: India C-In-C

"Sighting of possible Japanese Carrier TF by PBM SW of Columbo yesterday morning. Be on Guard and take all precuations within your best judgement."

FROM: India C-in-C

Passed over for Flag rank, this Captain does not take the warning seriously. At 0700 a Japanese Search Plane flies over the samll convoy and the Captain begins to wonder if perhaps he should put in to Trivandrum's port. He calmly sips his morning tea and contemplates radioing the development to High Command when radar picks up a large formation of planes approaching from the SW.

Bellowing "Battle Stations" at the top of his lungs, the Captain spots what appears to be a an inbound strike of carrier aircraft. "How can that be possible HERE?" he cries out. "Radio---send to all stations in the clear 'HMS Ramilles under attack by Japanese carrier aircraft 10 miles SW of Trivandrum' and try to muster up some fighter cover for us." In a sickening moment he realizes there are NO fighters in Columbo.

The attack that kicks off the last Japanese Offensive of the war is--appropriately enough--headed by Strike Commander Captain Fuchida and the Akagi/Kaga veteran pilots. 8 Zero, 22 Judy Dive Bombers, and 43 Grace TB calmly line up their attacks. The Ramilles doesn't stand chance. While the Judy dive in to split the BB's AA fire, the TB sweep in at wave top level. Within 10 minutes the Battleship rolls over and sinks having taken 6 Bombs and 6 Torpedo hits. She becomes the 13 Battleship or Battlecruiser to be sunk during the war.

Operation Downfall has begun.

Throughout the western side of India distress calls ring out across the sea. Results look good for the initial attacks. The Japanese hit 16 AK and 2 TK with 7 Freighters sinking.

The CV Admirals get their orders for Day 2. Two CTF are to combine and hit Columbo's Port after launching any morning strikes that are needed. The two northern Carrier TF move closer together and keep up the hunt. The CVE TF move towards Columbo as well.

Addu is invaded in the late afternoon and will be taken over in the morning.

The only concern for the operation is that there is ONE Allied unit at Trivandrum. Doesn't make much sense but it is there nonetheless. Two TF will begin unloading 60,000 troops to immediately push this unit out of the town. A pair of Battleships will sweep in and lend bombardment to the landing.

Here is the map:

What's an R-Class BB doing way down there? Seems odd, unless it repaired and was in transit to the front.

Oh well, you'll take it!

Gamey yes, although I think if they are over 90% it is fair to buy them out. Besides - my whole point isn't so much that you can get TONS of troops out of China - you can get some, 5 divisions is 1 division on 5 critical islands - but that you are able to prevent 60-120 large Chinese units from fighting alongside the British.

well, 90% is not quite what I would think about "the most battered division". [;)]If you change a 90% div, I don´t have a problem with that, will still cost something like 2800 or more pp.

And yes I agree, I´m always trying to make the Chinese more or less incapable of launching an offensive from 43/44 on.

John 3rd -> RE: Southern China and ASW Fighting (3/10/2009 10:36:55 PM)

In my game against Mandrake I converted 6 Inf Div from China Command to Southern Area Army.  They had been knocked down over 50%.  Converted them moved them to Burma and let them rebuild a bit before committing them up there.  Dodn't think too much about it at the time but now would see in generally Castor's way.

I left for a couple of hours and haven't seen a turn back.  I imagine that Allied HQ is in a state of consternation.  If he doesn't realize how big of land component is involved he may simply ignore the Naval Attacks, rush ships to port, and see how long I hang around.  There is no reason for him to think I am staging anything but a hit-and-run attack with a possible landing.

PLEASE no one let the cat out of the bag in the other AAR!

It should be an interesting move.  I am prepared to go over and attack at several points if he moves a ton of airpower to the west.  Expect to have a good idea within 1-3 turns.  Nice thing is that he cannot get fighters present for at least 2 turns due to the long range.  Whatever does show up will be highly fatigued from the flight.  Should be exciting...

Durbik -> RE: Southern China and ASW Fighting (3/10/2009 10:43:17 PM)

nobody's going to give you away, John. Reading both your AAR's is just too funny to spoil it

John 3rd -> Operation Downfall: Day Two (3/10/2009 11:55:29 PM)

Operation Downfall
November 4, 1944

In the approach to Ceylon the Japanese PRAYED and sacrificed all sorts of animals to the Gods for BAD weather.  Now--we need the opposite!  This day finds bad weather moving in throughout India.  In a move that defies the imagination, NO Japanese strikes fly for the morning!  The afternoon provides another story though:

Columbo, Ceylon
An afternoon strike of 24 Zero and 28 Grace appears over the harbor of this port.  To the stunned surprise of the Japanese 44 Allied Fighters greet them as they approach their target.  Unlike nearly everywhere else in Japan, the Fighters of the CV Daitai are still of GOOD quality!  The Zeros manage to shoot down 9 Fighters in exchange for 4 of their own and 2 Torpedo planes.  These pilots seek to make it two Battleships in two days as they find BC Repulse sitting damaged in the Port.  Two more Torpedo planes fall to AA but the remaining 24 make a show of aerial Horizontal Bombing.  From 10,000 Ft they hit the elderly veteran with TEN 800 Kg Bombs!  Six of these bombs penetrate the decks of the ship leaving her heavily damaged.

Carrier TF 7--Rear-Adm Kakuta
These 3 small CVE get greeted in the afternoon by 7 B-24 flying from Columbo.  The first five miss but the last two manage to plant 2 500lb bombs on the small Shimane Maru.  Though wounded the ship still is able to fly off its 9 Judy to CV Taiho as it limps due south.

Trivandrum
Unloading carries on throughout the day as a TK Div, Inf Div, and 3 TK Reg are deposited on the beach.  To the surprise of nearly everyone the disruption is pretty low.  A Shock Attack is scheduled for tomorrow in the hope (PRAYER) to dislodge the Allied unit holding the town.  Two more Inf Div will begin landing to aid the attack.

As the unloading occurs the troops and merchant ships watch the awesome spectacle of a Japanese Battleship (there are only 3 left total) and Heavy Cruiser destroying a small convoy trying to reach the 'safety' of the harbor.

Mannargundi, India
A Glen spots that this port in empty of all units...

CV Orders
CV TF 1, 4, and 6 will combine in the hex South of Trivandrum tomorrow.  The combined force will have 4 CV, 2 CVL, and 3 CVE to defend itself and attack with.  All Judy Dive Bombers are ordered to Ground Attack to help the land assault.

CV TF 3 and 5 will unite west of Bombay and stage a Port attack there. There is shipping present so we'll see what this might stir up.

Bombardment TF
The Japanese form a Bombardment TF of Hiei, Hyuga, a CA, and 5 DD to hit Trivandrum during the day and evening.

Sinkings:  4 AK and 1 TK

Other Developments:
Canton
The Allies attack getting a 3-1 result and driving Forts down to 2.  The Japanese exact a severe cost though:
Japan--1,542 Cas, 36 G,  1 Vehicle            Allies--12,105 Cas, 122 G, and 36 Vehicle

John 3rd -> Off the Shores of Trivandrum (3/10/2009 11:57:11 PM)

John 3rd -> Singapore CVs (3/11/2009 12:01:31 AM)

I forgot to note two things in the Daily Report:

1.  British CVs were spotted at Singapore.  I might assume this is the Formidable and Benngton Force spotted about 10 days ago.  If they venture out I will engage and sink them.

2.  Addu Atoll fell and 32 Emily immediately moved in to stage Naval Search tomorrow.
