Now, now, don't do anything hasty. I suggest you start with dentistry and cooking, then work your way up to sports.

niceguy2005 -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/3/2008 9:50:37 PM)

So was watching "Sex in the Civil War" last night. Facts according to this History Channel show

1. 2 in 5 Union soldiers occupying Nasheville contracted VD.
2. The standard treatment at the time for syphilis was salts and mercury [X(]
3. The doctor had prescribed the proper amount of mercury when the patient began to drool uncontrollably and their teeth fell out. [sm=scared0008.gif]

Tomorrow I'll travel to London for a couple of days, visiting my sister. I'm still undecided which museum I'm going to visit on the first day. There are 3 museums near my sister's workplace, where I will meet up with her tomorrow evening:

a) Natural Museum of History
b) Victoria & Albert Museum
c) Science Museum

Which one? YOU DECIDE!!! Not really, but some input would be nice...

Dixie?

TBH mate, I haven't been to London in my own time in over 10 years, I'm just a country boy deep down and the big city scares me. I went to the Science Museum about 15 years ago and enjoyed it, but I am a (not so) undercover geek so that may explain it. Last time I was there was last summer, but that was work related (Falklands 25 Parade near Buck House). So was the summer before that (RAF parade at St Clement Danes, the RAF church).

My choice would be c, b, a. in the order, although it's close for a+b. When I finally get round to actually getting to London, my choices will be Imperial War Museum and HMS Belfast. My main memory of the Natural history Museum is the film One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing....

EDIT: How long are you in teh UK for? I finish work on Monday morning if you're likely to be around early in the week....

I love HMS Belfast, but found the IWM itself a bit of a let down (good, but a little too small). Hendon is better value it has the RAF Museum and the Battle of Britain Museum (and another - can't remember) co-located. It is way out and eats a bit too much time though...

Edit Now Duxford - That's a gnikcuf museum!!!

Been there. For work. It was part of my basic training. [:D] Wander around Hendon in uniform without drawing too much attention to ourselves. We had to answer a load of questions when we were going round, lucky for me I'd done my research before joing up so I knew a lot of the answers before we even got there [:D] A few I can remember...

When was the RAF formed?
When were the V-bombers actually used in offensive missions.
What was Blue Steel?

A nice easy day out for me and my mates on the course [8D] Blitz round the few bits we (I) didn't know the answers for and then spend the rest of the day buggering about in 'planes [:D]

But, say, are you implying that Americans are fat, lazy, ignorant morons? Where would you ever get that idea?

From the Big Book of Stereotypes. It's the international standard for getting an idea of what a country and it's people are like. The USA is covered in the section just after United Kingdom.

Actually, my experience of Americans can be divided into two categories. Either they are switched on and generally friendly & helpful. Or they are complete idiots with no common sense or initiative. There doesn't seem to be any middle ground. [&:] I am hoping to meet category 1 later this month...but my prior experiences with the USAF have not filled me with confidence...
