The Missouri is docked at Pearl Harbor these days, alongside the Arizona Memorial. It is mostly restored/refurbished and if you want to visit they have daily tours. My chorus will be performing on Veternas Day for the sunset service (on the fantail, as we have been doing for the past 4 or 5 years).

When I was 14 I visited the Missouri and signed my name on the wood deck under one of the turrets.

Wosung got that one right. The USMC without even any combat veterans repulsed the first Japanese invasion of Wake.

At Dieppe the attacking forces intended to withdraw regardless of results, so I guess that one doesn't count.

What about Operation Menace?

What two famous film scribes met while doing intelligence work in Canada?

I'll take an educated guess. Ian Flemming (who wrote the James Bond novels and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) and someone else. I'm not sure who the other person was. Did it happen at Camp X?

Another (much easier) question: What ill-fated ship carried Churchill to meet Rooseveldt to draw up the Atlantic Charter?

... and the follow-up question: where was the meeting held (i.e. what was the ship's destination)?

The meeting was in Placentia Bay in Newfoundland on the HMS Prince of Wales.

No takers, huh? I guarantee you know their movies... I'll leave it open a while longer.

Not correct.

Patton had command of the "fake" 1st US Army Group, whose goal was making the Germans believe the landing was coming at the shortest point across the channel at Calais.

This plan had a name but I don't remember it.

I read up on this one...DeGaulle's idea to land in Vichy Senegal in 1940. The landing forces met more resistance than expected, and DeGaulle decided to withdraw rather than intensify French-on-French fighting at the time. The original hope was that just showing up would lead the Vichy forces to align with the new Free French command, but that didn't happen. So I guess the authors of my quiz book didn't want to count that as a determined invasion either.

Most of the quiz questions have been turning out to be rather easy though. Maybe I'll find another good one yet.

The Sydney is correct lossing all 645 on board.

Brian - seeing as your bored?

Three more to answer? Froonp has number 2 right.

How about a few Australian flavoured questions?

1. Which Australian Militia unit made first contact with the Japanese in New Guinea?

2. What was the name of the Australian ship sunk of the West Australian Coast and recently discovered?

This is the one who perished fighting the German Raider. The raider must be the Kormoran, but I'm not sure about the Australian cruiser. Maybe the Sydney ?

3. Which Australian armoured unit was posted to protect Western Australia?

4. Who other than Blamey was an Australian Field Marshal of WWII?

Almost, go up one more level to an Army Group and you will be right.

As we only had 3 armoured divisions all up, and I'm not sure that any but the first were in existance at the time of the Japanese entry into the war. I'll go with 1st Armoured.

It was part of a larger plan called Fortitude North I think. It also involved deception plans for landings in Norway and Denmark (and probably somewhere else).

the "200" number was used for the FW200 Condor, so I don't think that it was available for Dornier.

There is such a plane, but there is a slight chance this is a trick question [;)]

The trick is that it was an American plane. More specifically the B-17 Flying Fortress, or rather captured B-17 Flying Fortress.

Froonp -> RE: OT - WWII quiz (8/20/2008 12:31:35 PM)
