When I posed the question, the answer was intended to be 'the war between the Soviet Union and Japan'. In searching the reference for posting here, I now realize that while the fighting might have been over, the official declaration of peace might not have happened for a while.

When I first read this I gathered that the war between the Soviet Union and Japan had ended on the day before WWII started.
But it is still sort of interesting. From an Eastern perspective, the attack on Poland might not be the starting point of the war; but rather hostilities between Japan and the Soviet Union (or even hostilities between Japan and Korea, China, etc.
