Mehring -> RE: GPW v6a (8/7/2008 10:06:10 AM)

If you'd be kind enough to wait for me until I get back from holiday, and we get two more players, we could start in 2 weeks+ but...
I think everyone should have some practice with the command system before we start, me too. So I'd recommend that you organise 4 player practice games, against the AI or whatever, just to get the feel of/improve, the experimental system and see if it works. There are bound to be hiccups and oversights.

Taking the outline turn structure below, it would be helpful to start fleshing out what might be included-

1. HQ issues orders and sends current file to all players.
What should orders include? Should the subordinate HQ have an idea of the strategic objective of their font as well as the current operational one? Top HQ will have to think to what degree they will manage their subordinates, loose directives vs micro-management. This may vary according to personal characteristics as well as experience and the situation. Micro-management will doubtless annoy a subordinate who feels he can do the job without interference. Trusting them to do their own thing might not get the job done- or they might do it better than top HQ. Commanders' dilemas!

2. AGs/Fronts request strategic support (if centrally managed) and any special unit/supply allocation.
You're going to have to justify your requests for resources as Top HQ will often have more requests than resources. Cry wolf too often and you might not get resources when you REALLY need them. Make do and those resources will probably tend to go elsewhere.

3. Having consulted all concerned, HQ allocates strategic support, authorises inter-front transfers (if any) and detemines that turn's order of play (movement/combat resolution) among the Fronts/AGs.
Top HQ has to balance operational priorities while maintaining good relations with subordinates if possible.

If it happens anywhere, I suspect this is where sub-HQs get to throw a hissy. Few people are going to like having their troops taken away and given to someone else or see the attack they'd been tasked with and then planned with two airfleets in support actually recieve only one squadon. What do you do? Sulk, get on with it, or both?

4. Last AG/Front returns file to HQ. All make turn report to HQ.
This report is going to help Top HQ allocate resources, and, if the enemy doesn't turn the front upside down in their turn, help the Top HQ determine realistic objectives for the next turn. Top HQ has various tools in Statistics, like OOB and Totals but the latter gives stats for the whole front, not an individual AG/Front and there are a lot of units to look through in OOB so if your units are in bad shape, here's another opportunity to tell Top HQ. And having got your recce planes out and looked behind the enemy front, pinpoint enemy concentrations to Top HQ or draw attention to weakly defended areas. put yourself in Top HQs shoes and think what they's need to know to make your own job easier.

5. HQ replenishes frontline lower HQs/units from production and forms new units.
6. HQ sends file to other side.

Please add to/subtract from/disagree with any or all of the above. If you try it out, let us know how it goes.

Hi guys,

what a super cool idea to have somebody play the top HQ! [sm=happy0005.gif] All players of this game are awarded 100 bonus study points from the Advanced Tactics Free Academy for Pacifists! Points can be exchanged in the usual fashion for FREE gadgets [sm=dizzy.gif].

No, but seriously, I hope you'll keep us all informed about the development of this best idea since ages on AT![sm=happy0065.gif]

zigzag -> RE: GPW v6a (8/7/2008 5:47:35 PM)

I would still like one of the Axis AG'S[:)]

Mehring -> RE: GPW v6a (8/7/2008 6:31:26 PM)

@zigzag
Why don't you PM all the people who have expressed an interest on the thread and get a team together for the Axis side, then sort out your roles and practice them?

@Manus von Olie
Thanks for the encouragement, why don't you join a side?

Mehring -> RE: GPW v6a (8/7/2008 9:00:38 PM)

Thanks to Jay Doubleyou, we've got a  PBEM anti-cheat PBEM method. The file can only be opened 5 times by each side, twice by HQ, once each by subordinate commands. So we get four possible cheat messages per turn, I guess.

british exil -> RE: GPW v6a (8/7/2008 10:22:35 PM)

Sounds like you're planning the offensive of the ofensives. The battles of all battles.

You can count me in. Willing to serve wherever the need may be. Already sent a pm to zigzag.

Mehring -> RE: GPW v6a (8/7/2008 10:35:36 PM)

Excellent, welcome aboard!

Mehring -> RE: GPW v6a (8/8/2008 9:58:37 AM)

Good luck, have fun, and back in a couple of weeks.

Jay Doubleyou -> RE: GPW v6a (8/11/2008 9:19:46 PM)

Zigzag, British Exile and I started a tryout game against AI to see how it works out.
Because we have only 3 players, i combine the commander role with commander of AGS.
Greif an meine Kameraden! :D

I'd love to, but I can't guarantee a steady flow of moves at this moment, so I'll just stand at the side, cheering.

Jay Doubleyou -> RE: GPW v6a (8/23/2008 4:25:27 PM)

Everything worked fine in our tryout game. No problems with the scenario and it was nice to have see the command line worked well and we were supporting eachother. Certainly interesting to play this human vs human.

Mehring -> RE: GPW v6a (8/23/2008 6:34:50 PM)

Back at last!

Sounds good. I've seen some interesting use of screen shots with writing/arrows over them and was wondering how to do this. Anyone? It would make swapping plans and issuing orders easier than just relying on text.

Any Rooskie players want to start another test game? Count me in :)

Manus, will you need some pompoms? ;)

Jay Doubleyou -> RE: GPW v6a (8/26/2008 6:29:58 PM)

I'm on holiday from this friday till saturday 13 September.
Try to get 6 or 8 players in and we can roll!
I suggest everyone who is interested pm Mehring.

Mehring -> RE: GPW v6a (8/26/2008 7:42:53 PM)

Yes, please do!

Mehring -> RE: GPW v6a (8/27/2008 10:33:47 AM)

We need 2 more players for the Russian practice game.

***Can all players please update to the new v1.20 to avoid compatability problems***

TheArchduke -> RE: GPW v6a (8/27/2008 1:58:41 PM)

If you guys still need another player I would be up for either side (though I prefer russian)

Mehring -> RE: GPW v6a (8/27/2008 2:51:00 PM)

You're on. One player to go.

british exil -> RE: GPW v6a (8/27/2008 6:56:03 PM)

I hope that I am still included on the german side[X(]

Jay Doubleyou -> RE: GPW v6a (8/27/2008 8:48:58 PM)

I prefer to put good and experienced players (like TheArchduke) in the German side, since that side is (far) more difficult then playing the Russians. It will make the game more interesting and challenging for both sides.

Mehring -> RE: GPW v6a (8/27/2008 8:59:30 PM)

Yes, it also simulates Stalin's purge to have learners on the Russian side. What say you, Archduke? Maybe having an insider on our test game will give the Germans even more advantage.

I haven't started on my 'what if' mod, in which, in 1937, Tukachevsky pre-empts the Stalin's purge, shoots the entire politburo, invites Trotsky back to Russia... then Russia can have all the best players from day 1 [:D]

zigzag -> RE: GPW v6a (8/28/2008 10:47:26 PM)

I'll play as a russian player if you need me to. I'm not experienced in this scenario so,make me whatever you need is fine by me.Just let me know

RufusTFirefly -> RE: GPW v6a (8/29/2008 5:16:46 PM)

If there is still a player needed I would like to join.

Its a great idea to play it in the way you planned it. It will be a real challenge, not in the way how to beat the opponent but more how both sides mange to form a good working team. [:)]

Beside a lot of experience in strategic games I have played AT for three months now. So I am not an expert. Means, it might be the best to put me on Russian side. Anyway, I will stand do my best where ever you want me (if at all  [;)]).

Mehring -> RE: GPW v6a (8/29/2008 6:10:47 PM)

I say we sort out roles and go.

We have-

Zigzag
RufusTFirefly
TheArchduke
Mehring

playing-
STAVKA

NW FRont
W Front
SW Front

We can always swap roles during the game, it's better all players have experience of both command levels, but let's heve your starting preferances please-

british exil -> RE: GPW v6a (8/29/2008 7:10:01 PM)

willing to play my part in the game. where ever I'm needed.

RufusTFirefly -> RE: GPW v6a (8/30/2008 10:32:35 AM)

Would prefer an army group. But coming at last I will take position that is the last to be set, of course. [;)]

Mehring -> RE: GPW v6a (8/30/2008 11:22:49 AM)

I forgot, mavnb was up for a slot, too. I'm PMing everyone who's expressed an interest. First come, first serve, but give me your second choice too. Hopefully, anyone who doesn't get an opening slot can take over a front or HQ later- command changes and a commanders pool are all intended parts of this experiment.

Please do not be demure in your requests for slots. I'm sure it's intended to be humble and considerate but these undoubted qualities must be balanced by a certain amount of assertiveness if a successful command structure is to be formed. How is HQ going to allocate reserves etc if a Front commander says "I'll take a few trucks if there are any left and nobody minds." Answer- HQ is going to have to micro-manage the war, closely inspecting all fronts and analysing their needs. Command structure, as with all human relations, is a balance of conflict and co-operation.

HQ NEEDS you to say what you want!

Mehring -> RE: GPW v6a (8/30/2008 11:55:01 AM)

STAVKA- Mehring (surprise, surprise)
NW Front- TheArchduke
W Front- mavnb
SW Front- all5n

Germans- RufusTFirefly

Command Pool-
When we start the game for real, this will be split into the two sides. I suggesst that command pool follow progress of the side they are assigned to and should feel free to submit operational plans to their HQ.

Bartheart
Ccr
RufusTFirefly

RufusTFirefly -> RE: GPW v6a (8/30/2008 11:56:19 AM)

As I was the last one to join, I will only take a command if any slot is available. If so I would like to take Russian army group South (first choice) or Middle (second choice).

You are right, we should say, want we want. If there are same choices we can still handle it out. But it makes no sense to say, ok, maybe I will but only if I dont bother anyone.

TheArchduke -> RE: GPW v6a (8/30/2008 12:38:36 PM)

Well, to be honest, I prefer the russian side, but I can play the germans as well if you guys want me to.

NW/W Front for me or HG Nord/Center for me in both cases.

Mehring -> RE: GPW v6a (8/30/2008 12:54:29 PM)

@TheArchduke
The practice game is fine, you have NW Front.
My suggestion, for the 8 player game, as you are reputed to be a good, experienced commander, is that you play Russian, but not from the start. You represent a "Zhukov" character who becomes available to Russia from December 1941 and stays in the Russian command pool untl that date.
