heinrich55 -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (9/28/2010 5:48:10 PM)

MR and Mobius,
Those maps of Prokorovka look great. I suspected they were close to accurate. I think the map making tools for this game are one of the more exciting features. I always held back from scenario design because the map making was somewhat intimidating. It seems quite intuitive for this system. Using google earth is a great idea for making very close to historical maps.

gijas17 -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (9/29/2010 2:31:27 AM)

I agree with Heinrich, the map maker is an exciting feature indeed. Need to get on Google earth and practice finding some locations.

Mad Russian -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (9/29/2010 5:18:10 AM)

You mark and save the locations you're interested in with yellow marker pins. That way you can always come back to them.

Good Hunting.

Mad Russian -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (9/29/2010 8:23:04 PM)

Here is another SS of a map. This one is mostly forest between Smolensk and Roslavl. The attack takes place at dawn. So the sun is about to come up and we have a pink sky.

Also, if you look down in the right hand corner you will see that this TAC map is 'busy' the pink is where there is a bog, the orange is an area covered in brush. The tan areas are muddy, the green are forest only., while the while area is our objective, the village of Glinki.

These are the colors that the TAC AI goes by when doing any kind of movement on the map. I can place anything in those areas. For instance most of the tan area on the actual map is covered in forest and not just open muddy ground.

You can see the German forces entering the map in the lower right corner and that there are 5 uncontrolled flags on the map. Structures such as buildings don't show up on the TAC map. Just the main terrain features.

Good Hunting.

But you know the light in the morning isn't white like it shows in the foreground of this SS. So here I am playing with the tint and color of the light in the early morning.

To show you just how powerful Map Maker can be. This isn't where I want it yet but we're getting closer.

What I wanted more of an orange and less pink. This is what I came up with.

I'm happy with this result.

I think you've nailed that colour just right MR... IMHO. Some very impressive stuff being shown here lately. My fingers are just itching to get the update (aka a brand new game "PC: OstfrontII" by the looks of things)... great job!

Enigma6584 -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (10/1/2010 7:34:20 AM)

This is superb work.  It really looks like there are a lot of options in being creative with this wargame.  Both in scenario design and map design.  Could you by chance give us some screenshots of the various infantry?

Nice log house.

Mad Russian -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (10/2/2010 3:11:56 AM)

Yes, we're all aware that the infantry need work.

As has been said from the beginning, the infantry combat model is to be redone in PC4.

Since most of the changes to PC to date have been done to the armor combat system that's that part of the game that's gotten the lion's share of support. Including the modding. But with the kind of mod support the community has given games in the past I expect to see some infantry mods that will be just as eye catching as the tanks mods are at the moment.

Good Hunting.

gijas17 -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (10/2/2010 4:34:16 AM)

No, I was actually commenting on the log house. The infantry looks great MR. Keep up the good work.

wodin -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (10/2/2010 11:58:11 AM)

Think I will wait for PC4...as I love my infantry combat more than AFV combat...still I'm sure it's going to be a hit all around

Erik Rutins -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (10/2/2010 1:42:01 PM)

Infantry combat in Ostfront is fine IMHO and a step up from Winterstorm/Kharkov thanks to showing infantry casualties, modeling fatigue, better cover and LOS treatment for infantry, etc. Playing the same scenario in Kharkov vs. Ostfront, the Ostfront infantry are more survivable, believable and effective. The new ammo limitations on vehicles also help, as do the added variety of infantry special weapons, including panzerfausts/panzerschrecks and flamethrowers. You can play an entire campaign with just an infantry force if that's what you prefer.

RockinHarry -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (10/2/2010 2:53:46 PM)

I generally like the infantry 3D models as seen here and one can quickly go overboard, by adding too much LOD, at the cost of having lowered game performance. Things that could be improved IMHO, would be the generic single soldier postures. I.E LMG and SMG gunners not having a "shooting from the hip" posture or rifle gunners not aiming at something, when there´s nothing to shoot at the moment. Also the HMG 42 gunner should be actually sitting or lying prone to operate the gun. I just can judge by seeing the SSs though and things might look different in a running game.

Is there any videos online and showing infantry active and inactive in various situations? [8D]

I didn't say the infantry didn't work. There is just more left to do with them. They play fine now but will look like what you've been used to in other games. The non-destructible terrain makes infantry combat feel a bit odd when you don't see the building blow up. But the modifiers are all in the game. The artillery has been completely redone. There have been major changes to the infantry already as well. They fight just fine.

They just didn't get all the refining the rest of the game got. In a way I guess you could say the infantry combat model was in the best shape so we fixed the most glaring issues first.

I wouldn't pass this game up if you are an infantry gamer. Unless you can't live with buildings not blowing up. If that's the deal breaker it should be along in PC4.

There has been animation work done to some of the infantry but there is still more to do. In a nutshell that's the entire story with PCO. There's been a lot done but there is still more to do. Look how far we've come already and all for a free update.

Good Hunting.

Mad Russian -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (10/2/2010 5:18:23 PM)

I've started an AAR for an infantry battle. I have been working on a map for an infantry campaign. The battle for the village of Glinki north of Roslavl.

You can see just how infantry works in PCO by following along.

You might want to reserve that decision until after you have tried the demo. My battle preference is Infantry with some small amount of tank support and i've been pretty happy with the improvements made in PCO to the infantry model. I'm still looking forward to even more of course. But then I'm greedy.

Thanks
rick

Here's a shot of what happens if you try running all over the map with your infantry. They get tired.
