Hard Sarge, check this forum post out: Civ4 Veteran Post

First I want to say that I cannot agree or disagree with this Veteran Post because I haven't played the game. It's possible everything he said is right on the money. I simply don't know.

But there is one rule I have always gone by. If you want to enjoy a game stay away from the forums!

CIV II is still my fav out of the first four. It just has that perfect balance.

So true, I enjoyed my first two games of civ5, then I started to read the forum, and was told how bad the game really is. Silly me, I was having fun![:(]

I believe you are just blinded by nostalgia.  But that's alright, I still keep the old Civ II poster to display that entire tech-tree, despite I haven't played it in years.

Nope. It's on the hard drive of my latest computer and I play it to this day.

wodin -> RE: Civ 5 Manual (9/27/2010 7:24:36 PM)

one mans meat is another mans poison....so if your having fun then sod the forums....I've seen enough diatribe on CMSF to sink any game out there but I decided to give it ago and it's one of my all time favourites...even though the setting sparks no interest at all and is lets be honest sounds pretty boring and very onesided....the gameplay is superb...had massive problems at first and I'm glad I never tried it then as it may have put me off....

I played Dragon Age origins and found it so damn boring after a few hours...many forums glow with praise for the game....ME2 many moaned becasue it lacks the RPG element of ME1...well I think it's a better game for it...

So I can understand you can start to doubt your own enjoyment even after reading forums...but don't...if you like the game so be it.

I have the Alpha Centauri tech tree posted up on the wall in my gaming room. It's really something. Fine piece of work that game was, still impressive today.

JudgeDredd -> RE: Civ 5 Manual (9/27/2010 8:12:40 PM)

Combat Mission Shock Force should not be considered one sided - it is very difficult to achieve your goals whilst keeping casualties to a minimum...and that's normally how I score the outcome, regardless of objectives - but how costly it was

From what I see, the Afghanistan game is even more difficult. I played the first mission and seriously lost a serious amount of troops and APCs

wodin -> RE: Civ 5 Manual (9/27/2010 9:26:45 PM)

JD, oh it isn't one sided at all...just appears to be so.....

JD,

How about us getting into some gaming via VASSAL...thinking of getting Conflict of Heroes Awakening the bear....expensive but looks fantastic....lots of other games VASSAL covers....also fancy All things Zombie and Last night on Earth...

Same here. Still love the Elvii, wonders and advisory counsel. Might start one up.

JudgeDredd -> RE: Civ 5 Manual (9/28/2010 7:11:15 AM)

I think I'll pick up Civ V today. I don't normally shop at Game, but a guy at work gave me his "voucher" card that had £14 on it - so I may well pick it up from there.

On the DLC mentioned in the thread, I don't find the idea of DLC as abhorrent as some - companies have to make money - and if the DLC has decent content and is priced right, I see no reason why companies shouldn't do it. Besides - it's a choice - but it or not. If it's priced right and has good content, go for it - if it's not, don't.

htuna -> RE: Civ 5 Manual (9/28/2010 12:12:03 PM)

Civ V has kind of been a disappointment for me.. finished my first game.. it felt 'empty'.. have no desire to start up another.. maybe if the modding community makes up some interesting scenarios or something..

I was a big fan of Civ II thru IV... never played I

hadberz -> RE: Civ 5 Manual (9/28/2010 12:16:40 PM)

My problems seem to be over. A new patch came out last night, I went back to a older video driver Cat 10.8, and disabled crossfire on my computer. I got a hour of play in last night with no crashing. Normally Civ crashes within 2 or 3 turns. I'm still early in the game, but hopefully I can finish without any issues.

sprior -> RE: Civ 5 Manual (9/28/2010 1:35:28 PM)

It runs on my laptop but not the family PC. I hope this fixes the family PC issue but I suspect it might be the video card.

Judge, what is Game? I'm guessing some kind of game store?

JudgeDredd -> RE: Civ 5 Manual (9/28/2010 3:44:30 PM)

Yep - a store. Used to be Electronic Boutique, then EB Games, then Game.

Arctic Blast -> RE: Civ 5 Manual (9/28/2010 8:31:36 PM)

Well, a buddy of mine gifted me Civ V out of the blue earlier today...so I guess I'm soon to be part of the club. [:)]

ezzler -> RE: Civ 5 Manual (9/28/2010 11:30:02 PM)

Have beaten it hollow on the two easiest settings. Now moving up to the third.  I think this is where the other Civ games start to cheat. Racing through the resource tree. Its a shock when your first trireme is sunk by a fighter plane.

htuna -> RE: Civ 5 Manual (9/30/2010 10:57:23 PM)

Wodin and Judge, thanks your yakking about CMSF... It peaked my interest and hearing people yak favorably about it in recent past.. I gave it a shot from Gamers Gate.. what an awesome Gem!... Glad I didn't miss this one!... I hope Kharkoff plays like this after the patch!

JudgeDredd -> RE: Civ 5 Manual (9/30/2010 10:58:57 PM)

np - if I couldn't persuade one person to try that game who might enjoy it, I'd have failed society! :-)

Excellent...go get the modules...the British module in particular plays totally different...all the extra missions, weapons and campaigns make them well worth the money....also alot of mods make the game look way better....sciopo weapon icons are great as are all Mords mods...I for one can't wait for Normandy and all it's modules...infact all the future CM releases will be must buys.

JudgeDredd -> RE: Civ 5 Manual (10/1/2010 9:17:56 AM)

I'd be tempted to say DON'T get the modules yet - play through what you have - 'cos once you have the modules, you probably won't want to go back through the main campaign. When I got Marines, I didn't go back to the main game and when I got the Brits module, I hardly played the marines...so I would recommend you play through what you have first...

Wodin's right - the modules are excellent with a bunch of great scenarios and two good campaigns...but be aware you might not go back to the stock campaign [;)]

JudgeDredd -> RE: Civ 5 Manual (10/3/2010 8:28:38 PM)

Anyone with Civ V - does anyone else experience really bad slow downs through the game? At random points seemingly. It takes an age when I load a game to actually get going because all the tiles are loading the textures - and I can sit and watch it slowly do it. The game then seems to speed up - but in my last load, after playing a while, I had to quite - it was like a slide show!

JudgeDredd -> RE: Civ 5 Manual (10/4/2010 12:07:59 AM)

Nevermind - tried it on DX9 and it was fine, so I think it's the DX10/11 implementation that's the issue...could be drivers for my card (which is DX11 capabale apparently)

LarryP -> RE: Civ 5 Manual (10/4/2010 12:58:39 AM)

I play it on my desktop with DX9, my laptop with DX10, and neither have speed issues. From the posts I've read (and they are many) in many different forums, the issues with Civ5 seem to be specific to certain groups. Mainly that is. There are some exceptions of course. I don't want to start a heated debate over this, so if anyone replies with an argument, you're on your own. I'm reading from afar... [X(] [:)]

Well, gave it another shot.. this time with the AI a lil tougher, and it was a lot more rewarding/enjoyable.. guess I spoke too soon!

I read that the tougher levels only add more units to the opposition and nothing to the strategy. Did you see this to be true? [&:]

htuna -> RE: Civ 5 Manual (10/4/2010 1:29:48 AM)

think so.. but that's what my problem was the first game.. I did one level above the easiest. I'm not a master strategist or anything and with CIV IV, that would've been a good game for me. But with V it was too easy.. Moved it to the middle (Prince I think).. got my butt kicked.. playing a third game now at the level and doing a lil better..

LarryP -> RE: Civ 5 Manual (10/4/2010 1:34:48 AM)

I'm the same, no master strategist here either. I play within the first three bottom levels and have plenty of action to suit me. I have a lot of hours into Civ4 on the Chieftain level. [:D]

You can add me to the club. I always wondered how many were actually able to go up the line and win. The computer seemed to cheat by making advancements quicker then possible for the player. On the other hand, are there cheat codes for players to use? Or just what am I missing and unable to do to keep up with the AI. Have had the same problem through all the games of the series through Civ 4.
