I envy your vehicle point pool. I'm producing over 1100+ daily as well, but can't get my pools above 3000. I have no idea why and there hasn't been that much combat of my armour units so I just don't know where the vehicle points are going. [:(]

I guess they're used for any kind of motorized support as well as armor. So it could be those keeping your pools low if you've had lots of actions lately.

That is typically the big user until your armor starts getting beat up and you have to replace AFV's.

subs: Plunger is sighted first by the Cha sub chasers near Ominato. This is an improvement, if a small one. Next up, a DC attack.

West Australia: These are tense moments. I'm afraid to recon Esperance any more and I have no idea if new units are moving in there. 3 fast transport TFs are moving with the Mini-KB toward a line even with Perth before they cut in out of fighter range and race toward Esperance. If this works then plan is to fly in two AF Coys with Tinas and then have a fighter presence right away so the Mini would not have to remain here vulnerable. There is a sub screen near Adelaide to hopefully give some warning and a few DDs will also patrol 10 hexes out from the main fleet toward the SE.

Two divisions are loading at Tilityap to come in here as well. They will take a deep route to stay out of search range and sub zones.

So Pac: No sign of any sigint or ships moving. The scout forces are building up and waiting to reorganize at Canton Island.

China: Some tense moments. Today I send many many troops over the river to their fate near Chihkiang. I'm hoping the Chinese are short on supply and haven't built a whole lot of forts here. I'm also hoping they have fewer troops than it looks like they do. My guess based on recon numbers and the number of units is somewhere near 2,500-3,000 AV. Our troops are worth 6,000 AV. This is tough terrain, so it could be a bloodbath. Fingers crossed.

Bombing continues at all nearby bases and of ground troops on the roads nearby, in case they are on their way to reinforce. If the IJA does not take the place on first attack another will come most likely no soon than a week later. If Chinese troops can be kept from getting there quickly it will help a lot.

The Lusu War Area is eliminated finally. Unfortunately a stronger version will appear soon in Chungking.

DEI: Another division from the PI is unloading at Singapore. It will reembark soon on a better amphibious TF. The Junyo is days away from here with Suzuya to begin repairs.

I wish I would have caught this prior to your move. I tried something similiar in my AAR with comparable numbers and took horrendous losses, Two divisions completely trashed with disruption and disablements thru the roof for the remaining troops. It took my forces months to recover. Biggest lesson I learned was this, use the 1/3 rule to your advantage. I would split my AV into two groups. Assault with the first group and let it take the brunt of the losses. As long as you crossed with at least enough AV to cover 1/3 of the defenders AV, your follow up group could cross without a required shock attack and no disruption. Then you'd have 4000 AV in good shape to grind down the defence while your initial wave recovers.

I hope it goes better for you then what I experienced. My assault was much later against Chinese troops who were in so-so shape, also low on supply, yet I got smacked hard. Maybe the pressure you've put on will have rendered this group less effective. My fingers are crossed for you.

I really thought long and hard about this move. I just don't have the confidence that a partial crossing would render losses any less than going in full. The problem is that the first wave of 2,000 AV would be screwed up completely. That would be 5 divisions plus with probably 50% losses or higher.

At Sian I faced a similar situation on a slightly smaller scale and took a major defeat from the first attack. I was devastated and thought it would be months, as you say, before I could carry on. What I learned was that only several units would take the majority of the damage, and when supply started to flow back in it was I think two weeks before the army was in a functional state again. That is about what I'm expecting here. The advantage is that I can dump a lot of supply in while the Chinese will not have the ability to regenerate as quickly. Especially considering what Jocke has (perhaps unwisely) told me about the Chinese supply situation.

So, it is risky, but not I don't think more risky than losing up to five divisions for maybe two months. I'm gambling that 2/3 of my force will be able to go after 2 weeks and 3/4 of it ready within a month. I do have one healthy reserve division in the area and one brigade that can also come across over the next few weeks to add in.

It's all a big experiment, but this road must be cleared to make any advance, so the battle needs to be fought. If the Chinese can eventually be pushed back into the rough hex just behind them the IJAAF will hold them there long enough to make it a rout.

On an interesting note it still appears as if the small flanking force moving into the Chungking area has not been spotted yet!

SqzMyLemon -> RE: Wild Sheep's Chase - obvert (J) vs JocMeister (A) (3/22/2012 11:02:17 PM)

Pretty sound reasoning obvert. I couldn't do the same in my situation, simply for the fact the Chinese could cycle in reinforcements faster than I'd be able to recover. A Verdun was the last thing I needed.

Depending on your actual squad losses and the number of disablements, you'll be able to comment better than I can on moving forward from here. [8D]

PaxMondo -> RE: Wild Sheep's Chase - obvert (J) vs JocMeister (A) (3/23/2012 12:08:46 AM)

obvert, I'm with you.  Just change to combat for the river crossing.  That's worked the best for me.  Splitting forces has always been worse for me becuase after the van guard is trashed, i can't move anything across.

All of the advice I can get is useful, even if I decide against it in the long run. I would like to try a few different methods of shocking across rivers, but that seems like a good few days of tests in an early war save some rainy weekend when Jocke is away and no turns are coming through. Right now I've just got to go with my gut and see what happens.

Worst case as I see it is we don't damage the Chinese forces much and have to eventually pull back to regenerate, thus losing several months. Even so I could keep a holding force there myself and just pound away with arty to kill supply over time, then go again.

subs: The Pickerel hits one of the Aden class supply ships from Tokyo heading to Soerabaja to top up there. The best possible ship to be torpedoed in the entire Japanese fleet as far as I'm concerned. These ships are not fast (12 knots), there are plenty of them, and they unload very slowly. Not saying they're not useful. I love them just for this reason. They are the workhorses, like the IJN versions of a Liberty Ship. And if one goes down, as long as there are not important things on it, I'm not so concerned. This one, the Tempei Maru, looks to be in that range that could survive if it can make Balikpapan 4 hexes away during the next few days. It's at 15 65(33) 22(13) damage.

West Australia: Bettys bombed Geraldton's fields just to see if they could hit a bomber and to distract from the real destination of Esperance. Also it would be great if Jocke decide to post some fighters here as it's much closer sweeping range than Perth.

Realistically, I've screwed this invasion a little bit. Geraldton with two fast transport TFs early with 2 well prepped SNLF units would have taken the base. This base is crucial I've begun to notice, because of the slow movement from Carnarvon and its distance from Perth and other points. Now there are 6 units with 5,500 troops in the base, and I'm worried about exposing the Mini-KB to attacks from the US CVs and other surface elements covering down near Esperance. With best play from the Allies I think this operation would fail.

If I were playing that side I would stock all coastal bases with enough troops to foil a quick invasion, say 2 brigades. Then have a few more mobile brigades in Kalgoorlie ready to rail in to any spot that is in danger of falling.

In order to remedy the situation and make this work from my side a division will load prepping for Geraldton and aiming to meet the 4 tank units and 2 SNLFs that will walk from Carnarvon. Hopefully the Esperance invasion will come off and be enough of a distraction to allow this to work and become the main port for dropping the rest of the troops into this area. in total 4+ divisions will be brought in. Then, depending on Allied deployments, the goal will be to move on Kalgoorlie first and cut the rail lines. If this can be achieved, the 45,000 troops in Perth are looking a bit vulnerable.

While this is happening on the ground, the KB will station in Noumea and look for any resupply and troop movements to OZ. Pickets will be set out and subs will form a screen around the area. All IJN subs in the Pacific will be recalled to Tulagi for this operation. This will be a good 15-20 subs, and should give quite good intel about the area.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

After covering the Esperance landings the Mini-KB will book it toward Carnarvon, unload it's fighters, and about 100 zeros will try to break the back of the RAAF. Another large 36 zero group just arrived in Carnarvon. One 24 plane Rufe group will arrive within the week. The base is a level 3 at 62% build toward a level 4. Once it hits level 4 (about 4 more days) all hell will break loose.

So Pac: The KB will rest and recoup for a week or so and then move toward Noumea. Support ships will follow and may stay in Koumac, a bit more out of sight and danger. Subs will be called back from everywhere to Tulagi. Also, more supply and a zero group will be sent to Noumea.

China: Troops are moving forward. Fingers crossed. Chinese troops from across the area have begun to move about, mostly trying to get in position to reinforce it seems. They are being targeted to slow their movement. Northern troops are gathering one hex from Kienko for a massive assault here as well. 4,000 AV are in place with another 1,500 AV on the way.

I'm hoping these troops won't have to make an assault here at all as the flanking troops from the Ankang area are now getting into the meat of the high plains around Chungking. They're just on the gray road now being sent to a hex NW of Chungking itself with the intent to move to Kienko as fast as possible. They will be LR CAPed by zeros from Ichang and any troops heading out to intercept will be hit hard by waves of Sallys. Should be fun. I should have sent more this way!

If they do get close to Kienko, this will most likely cause the troops outside to try to retreat back. We'll see. Jocke could thwart this move if he's willing to send in the big guns. He could base 4Es in Ledo and bomb these troops from there with little or no escort. If this happens Nicks will move in from Burma to supplement the 3rd Ku S-1 from Ichang.

DEI: Dot base clean-up troops will head to Saumlaki to rest up a bit. They take a pounding after the invasion bonus ends. They also keep 'dispersing.' Not sure what this means, as they look the same after doing it.

subs: Skipjack duds on an xAKL in one of the CS conveys from Nauru, but comes back for another shot and takes down the Kaijo Maru with one hit.

I-25 gets its first kill of the game with two hits on YP-250 near Coal Harbour. These little guys have been plying these cold waters for weeks now looking for this sub, and they definitely found it. There are 3 more of these small patrol boats in this TF.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

West Australia: Fast transports should begin to land at Esperance tomorrow.

So Pac: All subs are being recalled to Tulagi to re-work the patrols.

China: Troops march ahead across the river. They should make it tomorrow. Bombing is heavy against both the Chinese troops here and the fields at Chihkiang. It appears also that our interloping troops in the central plains have been noticed. Some Chinese units are trying to make it out of Chunking. Bombing is scheduled tomorrow to slow them and once the crossing is complete and they are out of the city 100 Sallys will hit them hard.

I don't think you could muster 3 brigades in every Aussie port north of Perth even if you bring the 7th and the 9th Divisions from Africa directly home. I think you would be critically thin on the east coast. Just a newb 2 cents, but I will evacuate Darwin next game and defend supplied inland with the natural "time" barrier to the interior for a reaction. Perth is just to critical in MHO not to heavily defend. As an AFB I naturally hope you lose a substantial number of troops in the surf, but wish you well all the same.[:D] It does seem many allied players send US CVs west in the AARs.

I guess I wasn't really clear with what I was thinking. We're really on the same page here. I just think this area around Perth is critical and I would put 2 Brigades in each of the rail connected ports around Perth. Only five plus Perth itself.

Darwin is meat if the Japanese want it. Just too far away to support. The more that goes there the more the Japanese will destroy eventually. It can be a speed-bump though. I've decided to isolate it and go for it slowly as it loses supply. I'll start pushing there in about 3-4 weeks.

ny59giants -> RE: Wild Sheep's Chase - obvert (J) vs JocMeister (A) (3/25/2012 1:29:50 AM)

Australia doesn't start off that strong for the Allies. That is why I almost always send the 18th British Division there at start. You have four divisions that need to be filled out and that takes time (plus you need to upgrade to the '42 Rifle from militia rifle). You have a few independent brigades, but not that many. The small armored regiments are nice, but they need to upgrade to the M3 Grant/Lee tanks. Then that can be usefully if used in mass. Kalgoorlie is the key as this base allows reinforcements to get there by rail.

I was thinking that forces here would not be too strong, but some US troops must have come in in spite of the dearth of encounters by my subs and search planes. The P-39s got here by ship so I'm sure other troops have as well. This makes me more cautious than I was a week ago.

West Australia: One fast transport landed at Esperance with most of an SNLF, but our recon was either off or troops have moved in quickly here. Five units are listed including a Brigade. The other two fast transport will be diverted to Albany in spite of the CD guns there. It has a higher DL of 3/10 and still show 1 unit. The Mini-KB will cover from a few hexes out covered by a surface combat TF as well.

So Pac: Scout forces have gathered near Canton but I'm waiting for a quiet moment to sneak them through. Several subs are hovering here right now.

China: Well, it was about what I had expected if not what I had hoped to see. Our major stack crossed the river near Chihkiang into a tough defensive hex and achieved only a 1 to 2 attack. Our casualties are massive in terms of the report. Looking at the troops I was encouraged to see that many of the divisions are still right around 400 AV. One got completely trashed and is sitting at 14 AV right now, but with mostly disabled, not destroyed squads.

The Chinese took some serious damage in disablements, and whether they can get supply to heal up should determine whether we can move forward here soon. Of course some troops are moving to reinforce, and hopefully the IJAAF can slow and hurt them on the way. The units at 50% strength will move back across the river to go into rest mode to heal up. Two more reserve divisions are on the way.

A large shipment of 50,000 supply is unloading in Shanghai to top everything up.

subs: S-47 missed an ASW TFnear Tulagi. No DC attack followed. Triton wasted two torps on the CHa TF near Ominato.

West Australia: A major scare in the night. CAs Northhampton and Portland with 4 DDs slipped past our cruiser TF and hit the Mini-KB. This was a tense moment for the IJN. The 8 DDs and two CLs of the ACTF held off the attacks from doing major damage to the CVs, but Zuiho took 3 8 inch shots from Northhampton. She was left burning with 29 system 19 (13) float and 4 engine damage. The Ryujo took a couple 8 inch shells but came out with only very minor damage. All CVs are still operational.

The screening SCTF did not engage the enemy at all, probably due to the 3% moonlight. The Allied surface forces were gone by morning so no retaliatory air strike was available. So far I count myself very lucky to have come out of several dicey situations involving CVs with only minor damage. A bit more conservative approach will be adopted from this point onward.

This damage and several other things happening during this operation lead me to suspend any further action in the area and send all TFs back to Carnarvon and the Mini-KB back to Singapore for repairs. Ryujo is due for an upgrade in July, so it should be good timing for that anyway. I was really starting to feel out on a limb here and this cemented it. Troops will land at Albany covered by zeros form the retreating Mini and all other ships will make a run for it.

This leaves me contemplating the future of a campaign in SW OZ. All troops from this point will be landed at Carnarvon. If Albany can be taken some could also fly in there, but most likely not as this landing is only intended to distract and take troops away from the main objectives of Geraldton and Kalgoorlie. These troops are expendable, but if they can secure the base they will try to move north to cut transport lines.

So Pac: The Solomons are taking shape. The front layer of defense is solidifying with most bases getting to level 3 forts and level 2-3 fields. Two Netty groups are here as well as Oscars, Zeros, Rufes and a bunch of float planes for search and ASW.

Now attention will be given to the second layer, from Lae and Finschafen across to Cape Gloucester and Gasmata, then to Rabaul and several bases to the East of it.

China: Chinese troops are moving out of Chihkiang threatening a river crossing to cut off our force and possibly move behind them to the vulnerable center. Some of the injured units are already heading back there. Now 4 division in decent shape will also scurry back to cover the rear. Bombing will slow the Chinese troops, and if they continue on this could be a bloody move for them.

Supply is flowing in and repairs are commencing on the Central Army.

The troops in the plains near Chunking are streaking along the good road to cross the river before Chinese loosed from Chungking can intercept. In an interesting development the main concentration of troops holding us across the river from Kienko appear to be moving back into the town as well, perhaps realizing the weakness of their rear with two IJA units moving in behind them. If they move out the Northern Army will leave a holding force at the river crossing and the bulk of the force will move to flank Kienko through the rough hex on their side of the river. Then move into the clear where the tanks can get going and the Chinese will have no defensive bonus from terrain.

I'm excited about getting out of this corner of the map on these long yellow roads through the woods. If this 6,000 AV makes the plains, everything will likely break open soon up here.

Burma: The sky got congested today over Katha. Several Allied fighter groups concentrated here and swept the base. First came 16 Hurricane IIb, meeting first 34 Oscars and 3 Tojos. The IJAAF got slightly the better of this one, but after that the P-38s made their first appearance. That did not turn out as well. 28 Oscars and 2 Tojos met 25 Lightnings. 7 Oscars and 1 Tojo were lost for 1 Lightning. 25 P-40s finished off the tired defenders gunning down 5 Oscars for no losses.

Not sure what to counter the Lightnings with. I'll bring in the Nicks and see if they can do anything. Really need Tojos now (or maybe Franks?!?[:)]) Or maybe nothing is going to do much against P-38s sweeping, and I need to learn how to vary the CAP and even stand it down occasionally. I'll send in the Nicks for now and rail out the crushed Oscar group.

West Australia: The CD guns at Albany hit a bit harder than expected and put some goo sized holes in the DDs dropping troops there. Worse, the Naval Guard and SNLF landing there are pretty disrupted and will need a good several days to get into any kind of shape. This might mean that this piece of the operation has failed completely. Only 1,000 tops in 3 units is listed here though, so there is a chance still. One is the Princess Royal Fortress, another looks like a small MG unit.

All other TFs in the area are making a break for safety.

At Perth zeros swept and found a good number of P-39s in the air. As usual they performed fairly well en masse. I did not expect to find these planes here instead of the Kittyhawks. This means two things. A few convoys have made OZ recently, including the one carrying these. This could mean that US troops also arrived and will be moving to the area, if they have not already.

On the day we lost 13 zeros to 7 P-39s. Unfortunately this is the most numerous fighter the Allies have right now and it will be tough to wear them down. I'm disappointed the second sweep didn't do better after the first got them tired. Our pilots should have been fatigued as well I guess flying so far from Carnarvon.

China: I'm a bit worried that Chinese troops will make it across the river before the bulk of our troops get there to defend. Only two divisions will make it tomorrow after the other two slowed to 21 miles a day!? Fingers crossed.

Troops near Chungking get hammered after coming out of the city into the clear today. The IJA flanking force has made it across the river. Due to the troops moving back to Kienko, they will now head for the Chengtu area to see what other reactions they can provoke before moving back and getting out of harms way in the Eastern part of these plains.

subs: KXIII is spotted by the DDs from one of the SCTFs returning from the fast transport mission. No shots fired by either side.

Burma: The Allies are really working on Katha and our Oscar pools right now. Two hurricane sweeps started things off. 44 Oscars took out 5 in the first sweep and split 3 to 3 in the second sweep. Then 23 Lightnings dropped in and decimated 10 of the 30 Oscars there to meet them without a loss. At least we only lost 4 pilots as this was over our base. Still, this is not fun.

Some cargo ships appear to be heading from Calcutta to near Akyab. Bettys are ready to go and extra zero escort from Magwe will be set to 10,000 ft to match them.

West Australia: Tomorrow sweeps will test Kalgoorlie. If these are the RAAF Kittyhawk groups, we could do well here and open the door to disrupt things by bombing the fields.

China: All divisions made the blockade just across the river from Chihkiang. Unfortunately the Chinese troops did not continue on. 1,800 AV would have met them, some with 1 fort built. I would have liked to see that combat report. As it is these units will stay here until everything is ready to go again across the river.

A strike hit these first Chinese units to attempt to intercept our nearby flanking troops. Good hits were achieved here in the clear again.

Assign some bombers to ground attack on this base asap. You may catch troops coming and going in Strategic Mode and get a significant increase in destroyed devices and disruption. [;)]

A very good idea. If the 32 fighters here can be beaten down I'll give it a try. I also might try 'looking' down the rail lines by clicking in the hexes along it.

Burma: 16 bettys launch and hit xAKs Aroona and Moonta near Cox's Bazaar, sinking both ships. Two more are listed here so we'll see if they stick around.

West Australia: 58 zeros sweep over Kalgoorlie in successive waves but nothing comes up here. We'll wait a day and then try again followed by bombers.

All TFs have now gotten clear of the Perth area and the Mini-KB is chugging toward Singapore. Now I particularly notice the slow speed of Taiyo (and the damaged Zuiho) there.

So Pac: As most of the Allied forces seem to be moving toward SW OZ, not much is going on down here. I wonder if the operation there will have an affect in both areas and keep the Allies from pressing toward the Solomons or New Guinea. There are still no fighters in any of the Northern Australian bases.

China: Another day of pounding troops in the the clear. Tomorrow the arty will begin to work on the hopefully still highly disabled Chinese troops in the center near Chihkiang. Several units seem to be trying to reinforce from the yellow road NW of Chihkiang, and our bombers will hit them to both slow them up and try to disable them in the rough hexes they must move through. Our reinforcements are moving up now from Changsha and when they arrive we should be able to attack again with between 5,000 and 5,500 AV.

Here is a recent map of Central China.

subs: There are subs swirling all around Carnarvon. As SCTFs pull in some of the DDs are made into ASW TFs and sent out to hunt. When not bombing one Betty group is placed on ASW also. So far the sightings are good but no attacks either way. Several big convoys are coming in soon with troops and supplies, so I want to take every precaution before they arrive.

Burma: Lightnings unfortunately started off the sweeps today. They dived over and over again on the Oscars that came to meet them. Our guys did bag two for the loss of 9 today. Better than in previous encounters at least.

Of course then the Oscars performed badly against the P-40s that came next losing 7 planes for 2. Only 4 pilots lost on the day though, which is great.

Today Bettys went for the two AKs moving near Cox's Bazaar and were met by 17 Hurricanes on LR CAP. Zeros kept most of the bombers safe but lost 4 of their number for 2 hurricanes. One Betty was lost and the two AKs were sunk.

West Australia: Tomorrow troops will try to shock at Albany. No units have puled in here, so there is a chance of getting the base. The two units here are not yet fully healed but are close and are in the single digits for disruption with fatigue around 15.

Also bombers will attempt to hit Kalgoorlie, where 32 fighters and 18 bombers are listed. 36 zeros will sweep first.

China: In both the north and the center the armies in contested hexes bombarded today. In the north this proved surprising. In the hex just across the river from Kienko the Chinese troops heading back into the city total over 6,000 AV!! This is more than I'd thought, and I'm glad I didn't set any DAs without this information earlier. Interestingly, we did more damage in spite of 1/6 as many guns, which is always a good sign and usually means an attack would be profitable. They must be very low on supplies.

In the center the arty was again outnumbered, this time by about 3 to 1 and again we did more damage. The AV adjustment here is about what I'd expected. These troops have not repaired most of the disabled squads. They started at around 2,600 AV and lost around 600 squads destroyed or disabled. One small corps has moved in since and another is a few hexes away. These are being bombed extensively to slow them and hurt them before they get to the more protected woods.

Yeah, Jocke at first wasn't happy, thinking I was going on my way to suicide and try to wreck Chengtu's industry. Really just wanted to either get to Kienko and take it behind the big stack or force them to move back into the base so I could get all those divisions and tanks around them. Looks like option two is what is happening. Now my two units there are just forcing some Chinese infantry into the open where the bombing is easy.

subs: Stingray tried for a DD today near Carnarvon but missed with 4 torpedoes.

West Australia: Troops shocked at Albany today but came up 1 point short of an adjusted AV of 1 to 1. This is not looking promising. By the time these are ready for any action again more Aussie troops will move in. No extra support will be added here, so it's just a wait until the Allies decide to clear out the base. So I learned a few things here at little cost, but hopefully the entire operation will still achieve it's intended goal of slowing Allied approaches in the DEI and in the So Pac area.

Cent Pac: The moment an AV group left Canton Island it was spotted. It will go back and try again later. I may move some of these raiding TFs to Adak and start from there into the open NW Pacific. I'd really like to catch a BB or two going back to Seattle as well, and it should be about time for that considering the damage they took on Dec 7.

China: 15 B-17D bombed the division and brigade near Chunking causing little damage. I had thought these were LR CAPed but I must have forgot to set the 3rd Ku S-1 for that task. They were just training, which is a bit of a waste of this expert group.

Near Chungking over 70 infantry and 80 support squads disabled bySally raids. Bombardment still shows that the Chinese are not recovering troops from the recent battle near Chihkiang, which is good news. The report shows them declining slightly every day due to the artillery action, (2399 AV today).

Burma: Trying to get the Nicks back to full strength. The Tainan group will convert to A6M3 soon. No action to report.

Berlin

Had a break for the past week while taking students on a tour of Berlin. Amazing city, and incredible history. It was really difficult to feel the history of WW2 today under the Cold War stuff, but it is still there if you look closely. Most older buildings still have the evidence of bullet and shrapnel damage on their walls and columns, but of course most of the city is new after being crushed by the Allied bombing and Russian advance.

I didn't get enough of a chance to search things out on my own and I will go back to find more of the history, but I certainly had some good moments of reflection both there and in the air on the way to the city, thinking that I was basically following the route taken by so many men in their planes 65-70 years before.

Now back to London and the game.

subs: ASW TFs are combing the waters all around Carnarvon. DMS W-4 was attacked by Tarpon today, but after all four torps missed couldn't get a hit on it.

West Australia: Sweeps of zeros went for Kalgoorlie today. The results were good. The first, 36 zeros met 31 Kittyhawks and downed 9 including ops losses only losing 3 of their own. Next a bombing raid came in and the escort took down another 4 Kittyhawks for no losses. Nearly a month's replacements in total for the day.

China: 6 B-17D came over the plains again near Chungking and tried to bomb the troops there, but this time 5 zeros and 3 Oscars were there to meet them, damaging 4 and knocking one down as well as taking down 1 of the I-15 escorts.

Bombardment keeps chipping away at troops near Chihkiang and they are at 2398 AV today. No recovery at all happening there.

Burma: Sweeps went over Katha today causing havoc. First 22 Lightings and 46 P-40s (most likely LR CAPPing) met 9 Oscars and 4 of ours were lost. Then we see a large group of 47 Marauders or the first time over Lashio, and they take out 6 Oscars and a Dinah on the ground as well as putting the base out of action for a while with 57 runway hits.

subs: The O-16 goes for one of our big convoys bringing a division to Carnarvon. Yugumo ends up being the target and then goes for the sub, but can't locate it.

Late in the day one of the ASW TFs near Carnarvon find and hit the O-23 with 4 DC shots, one penetrating.

West Australia: A lot of Allied troops are moving around. Alarming reports are coming back from recon flights over Kalgoorlie and Perth. Each now has over 15 units and 30,000 troops. Although this news looks to make our drive for Geraldton much tougher, I'd welcome an escalation and build-up here rather than in the So Pac area. The IJA is building up for a grinding land war and if enough troops can be freed to get here, then this could become a major campaign soon. We should have the edge through the end of 42, especially if more troops in China can be freed, but have to either get this done by then or begin to think about a controlled withdrawal.

The 1st Raiding Rgt take Nookanbah to complete the NW OZ invasion except for Darwin. A Division is landing at Wyndham with two artillery units and an Army HQ to drive on Darwin over the next month. Nells will continue to bomb the field there and kill supply.

China: Sallys continue to hit Chinese troops in the clear near Chungking. They appear to be changing direction and heading back into the fortified city.

Burma: Another raid by a group of B-26s comes over Katha but before the sweeps. 14 Oscars break through 45 P-40s somehow and knock out 9 of the bombers. 2 Oscars are lost. By the time Lightings show up later in the day no Oscars are able to make it up into the air, thankfully.

Although the Oscar is already overmatched here, it still has days when it comes through, which is good news as Tojo research is crawling ahead and it won't be ready until August most likely.
