Unit Updates
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

After another few months in the game it's time to look at a few units to see where they are and what they've been up to.

I haven't yet had time to plot any of these on a map but I hope to try this soon. I also plan to look into tracker and get some updates on experience level changes, which might be the most useful part of this exercise.

DD Shiranui

Shiranui is at Yokohama upgrading along with several other Kagero class DDs and the Shokaku and Zuikaku. Once all of these ships have finished they will join the rest of the KB in Tulagi. Too bad the IJN decided to keep only the two DC racks. Most of the other good DDs are getting 4 racks in their upgrades. Inconsistency! Because of this Shiranui might be seeing more time as an escort for SCTFs now rather than with the KB.

14th Tank Rgt
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
This unit has moved up into the mountains since the last update, helping to secure Kunming and chase the Chinese forces into the wilds. It is now trying to keep a strong presence on the good road toward Chungking so that when our main Northern Army forces break through and begin moving toward Chengtu or Neikiang, there will be the possibility of another supply line open.

In the last few days a few Chinese units appeared on the parallel road and so we're trying to make it look like we're going the other way. It's a bit silly, because the tanks could obviously be gone in a day, but on the chance the intel for the Chinese is as poor as usual, maybe he doesn't know what these are and thus it could make some sense. The presence here could also, based on experiences from earlier flanking operations, make him get the jitters and move units out of Neikiang, giving us the base for free.

In the past two months, and with lots of action up the mountain roads and in the Kunming area, including several major battles, the experience level of this unit has been raised by exactly 1 point!

I-25
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The I-25 is limping back to Adak. It's looking like it might make it. The float and system damage have gone down a few points each, and I haven't gotten any flotation failing reports yet. Fingers crossed. In spite of several battles with DDs and it's first kill, the crew experience has not gone up.

PB Nagato Maru
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

After several quiet trips this ship is now in the thick of things, escorting a convoy into the battle zone around Carnarvon. It's on the way back to Soerabaja now. A sub hit a ship out here just a few days ago, and contacts are made daily, so its role is crucial.

In these convoys with troops I've been putting a larger number of escorts, and if APs and divisions or other large units are involved, I will place a mix of DDs and SCs into the convoy, and at times a dedicated ASW TF following, at least through the contested areas. Here I've also been routing convoys very close to the coast in mostly shallow hexes. So far the US and Dutch subs have not ventured into this path, settling for the deep water and relative safety.

xAK Oregon Maru
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This transport has also been all over the map already, and is now seeing time in enemy waters for the first time. Currently the TF is still unloading supplies after bringing several AA units to Carnarvon. It will head back to Soerabaja soon.

Tainan Ku S-1
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

After a roaring first 4 months of the war, things have settled down for these pilots. They are stationed in Magwe protecting the remains of the Oil here from Allied bombers. One raid managed to take out 2/3 of the facilities recently, and the Tainan boys happened to be on a sweep that day. Bad timing.

They've recently updated to the A6M3, but now that they have it I am no longer able to provide replacements for them. Supply may be the issue. No base within range has more than 20,000. A bunch is on the way to Rangoon, and hopefully this will make a difference.

Soon I will begin to remove most of the aces and 80 experience pilots from this group in anticipation of the arrival of the Tojo and to conserve these high quality pilots against destruction at the hands of the P-38s. I'm just waiting on quality replacements to be ready.

This is a Navy air group. You should be waiting for the Mr George, not Mr Tojo. [;)]

Yes, I'm waiting for Tojos for the IJAAF groups nearby so this one can go back to being a navy group! [;)]

Until they come the only chance I have against Lightnings (and 4Es) is to have overwhelming numerical odds and basically sacrifice Oscars in the hopes that the zeros will kill something.

ny59giants -> RE: Wild Sheep's Chase - obvert (J) vs JocMeister (A) (4/11/2012 12:48:34 PM)

It is mid-July 43 and Mr Frank just started arriving (will produce 180/month). Some of my critical AFs will have Tojo, Frank, and George flying CAP. The question is who flys high CAP (31k) while the others are below 20k to kill the 4e bombers?? The George has been a really great B-24 killer, so she will not fly high CAP. Is the Frank the best to go high CAP??

I'm looking forward to having the luxury of these options! I would say Franks high based on what I have read from other AARs. Tojo kill bombers pretty well based on the Sulu tests, so maybe you can stack three levels at 15k, 20k and 31k?

I have been playing around with these kinds of stacks just with Zeros, Oscars and Nicks. The trouble with mine is that if the Nicks went low they got slaughtered, but if they went high they still couldn't handle the Lightnings. I think for me now the best is A6M3 at 31k, Nicks and Oscars at 15k. I still only have one each of Nick and A6M3 groups, so this is a very limited strategy to just the area around Magwe/Mandalay.

subs: A LOT of sub action today.

Snapper launches 2 at DD Kamikaze which both miss. Our DD TF can't find the sub for a return attack.
I-170 is located near Port Kembla by an obvious ASW kill TF of 4 DD, but DD Lamson and Conyngham can't drop an accurate hit on her. Near Hachinoe the cat and mouse continues as Pollack launches 2 at CHa-30. Pollack tries again with 2 more at CHa-29. Both spreads miss and there is no return attack.
I-24 is also located by DD Drayton and Conyngham, but there is no attack. These subs are moving to get on station to the East and South of SE OZ.

O20 attacks the convoy with Oregon Maru in it and hits xAK Genzan Maru with one trop from a 4 shot spread. The Aden class transport falters and goes under later in the day.

Apparently the Genzan Maru is not just an Aden class xAK. It was originally a German built ship, the Hansa Rotenfels.

I-170 later runs into a fat TF of APs escorted heavily, including CL Leander (in the rollover later several DDs were also shown to be there). This is bad news for SW OZ, as it means more troops fro the US there. Although it justifies the decision to move back to Carnarvon and also means that perhaps more US troops will be committed there rather than in the Central or South Pacific areas, which is good. It's not good that we missed this target altogether!

West Australia: Darwin's damage is at 100 now and the troops on the way there have nearly reached Katherine. Well, a week away, anyway.

At Albany the Allies DAed and now it's time to buy back that Naval Guard unit. It'll be in Tokyo in about 2 months.

China: Ait attacks focus on Chihkiang again to reduce supply and moral of the troops there in anticipation of the river crossing. There is supply now, as flak was active during the raids. There were 9 supply hits though.

At Urumchi the CAF continued to try for our tanks, and the Oscars again took the day with 3 more kills of I-16 and several passes at the bombers which definitely threw off their aim. Only 2 squads disabled.

The troops on the ground went ahead with another attack, but didn't get quite the same successful results. Not bad, just not as good. We'll wearing them down slowly here.

A lot of updates coming up. I've been waiting to get screenshots to do the unit updates, and now I have a week or so of game to catch up on.

subs: No reports after the craziness of yesterday, but one sub reported hit by a Betty near Carnarvon.

West Australia: I decided to pull the trigger on another set of sweeps over Perth today, just to see what is here now. They didn't do badly even at this distance, and I learned something new. First 27 A6M2 met 16 P-40E and 18 F4F-4 Wildcats. The first Marine group encountered so far. The zeros kill 3 Wildcats for 3 zeros to start. Then the next group of 36 come in later and find only 8 P-40 and 9 F4F-4 up to contest. This group, the better of the two anyway, shoots down 4 Warhawks and 5 Wilcats for only 1 ops loss. Banzai! I can't do this often as I'm short on IJN fighter pilots for about another 3 weeks until the training groups are finished learning their stuff.

Interesting that the Wildcats had the height advantage, flying at 25k, but the zeros still beat them. Must not have been trained in the Thatch Weave yet!

China: At Urumchi the CAF continues to come and Oscars continue to shoot them down. Today 3 more I-16 go down and several SB-III are damaged. Troops are healing well and have full supply again already. Hami is at 1286 supply and this should last a while to pass on to these troops.

Burma: The IJAAF strikes back in Burma. 94 Oscars and a few Nicks coordinate (though sweeps and LR CAP) and decimate two groups of P-40s here. At least 18 Allied planes lost on the day to 5 Oscars. Banzai again! Of course he'll probably keep many of the pilots.

Time for a nice quiet turn after a very busy one, right? Not exactly.

subs: The British subs get into the action as Truant homes in on a supply convoy near Phuket and nails the Kuritake Maru with one torp. Truant comes back and sends two more into her for good measure, sending her down quickly with part of a base force and a load of supplies bound for Rangoon. The CHa escort was not able to find the sub to respond.

Interesting in reading the book on sub actions in the Indian Ocean that originally the British subs had to hail the ship, stop her, make sure the crew was safe, and only then could they sink the ship. This changed as the war progressed, of course.

West Australia: More subs attacked from the air. The Bettys are getting better.

China: Broken record here. 3 more I-16 downed by Oscars from the 10th I.F.Chutai.

Burma: Payback is a bitch. Far from licking their wounds, the Allies form their strongest raid to date aimed at the Magwe oilfields. Unfortunately the Tainan group were sent to sweep Imphal today. Bad timing.

The fields were 2/3 destroyed. It was bound to happen, but I had hoped to make it more painful and to have it take slightly longer than one day of raids. Oscars did well, but this was just too strong of a raid to stop.

subs: Etashima Maru didn't make the connection with the convoy it was meant to merge with and paid the price. Drum surfaced and hit the small xAKL with 11 rounds. Later it fired two torpedoes, but both missed. Then two more. The ship sank later in the day regardless.

West Australia: I've made a decision here regarding the amount of troops to keep in the area. One division and two regiments will stay. These and support troops should be able to defend the base against at least twice the number of troops for long enough to make this worth it. Also, this gives more flexibility to make a move behind the Allies should they bring a lot down the long slow road to Carnarvon. Exmouth will get an SNLF for now and hopefully a brigade later.

China: The same again at Urumchi. 3 I-16 downed for no loss of Oscars. The little fighters are keeping us from the bombers. A few squads disabled today.

Its a few more days still until the river crossing to Chihkiang. Bombing continues.

I would make it two divisions. The two regiments will probably be combat ineffective for the rest of the battle the first time you suffer a 2:1 combat result. At least a division will have staying power. The Aussie armor will take on your tanks and destroy them easily. I would try to send some RF guns here to help. Hopefully, their AT guns have gone from 37mm to 45mm.

Great points. To hedge my bets a bit the two regiments are part of a division that can be easily reassembled, can't remember the number now, and the third portion is molesting Cebu with the Recon Rgt now. I believe the Arty part is at Carnarvon already. I could bring them back together after that operation.

There are two upgraded RF gun units at Tuyun doing nothing against the Chinese. I should bring those over.

subs: I shortened the leash on Bettys from Carnarvon flying ASW to 8 hexes (effectively 4 hexes on ASW) to see if it would help saturate the area close in to the port. These two big groups are set at 40% ASW 10% naval search on about 180 degree arcs. It did seem to immediately give more sightings, but no more attacks today.

West Australia: Troops begin the march back to Carnarvon. Several SNLFs and the tanks were within two hexes of Geraldton. It'll take a while to get everything back. I wonder what Jocke will think of this. Hopefully he'll consider that this was entirely a feint and that something is about to happen somewhere else.

So Pac: Subs are beginning to reach their new patrols now. It's looking a bit more saturated in the area now. With the better commanders and more subs in each area I anticipate some news soon.

Burma: The brigade prepping for Diego Garcia will move to the Burma area. I'll still keep the prep as an intel deception, but I'm thinking this operation may not happen at all now. Looking at the available forces it's hard enough to garrison the DEI without extending further into the Indian Ocean. To really be effective a Nettie group would have to be torp enabled there, and I definitely can't spare an HQ right now for this if I want to make sure the most vital areas are covered, mainly the Andamans and Sumatra.

China: Chihkiang must have somehow, in between sets of bombing, built some forts, as our bombers are having little success attacking the troops there. Less so anyway than other wooded hexes nearby. All troops are set today to move forth. The crossing should take place in 3 days, 1 day movement and 2 on combat setting. Nervous about this one but also excited to see if a breakthrough can be achieved.

At Urumchi it was more of the same today, except for the small wrinkle that a group of I-15s joined the I-16s. Looks like he's starting to run low on tiny Russian fighters. Although the report doesn't show it, 2 I-15 were shot down and 1 SB-III plus 2 ops losses due to damage as our 3 Oscars managed to fight through to the bombers today. Building up a nice group of pilots during these actions.

The man on the right of this photograph is reported to be Art Chin, the first US ace of the WW2 era. I'll post another photo and more info just after this. Fascinating story.

In this photo, the Chinese script on the side of the plane says 'NY' as it was purchased with money from Chinese Americans from NY City to fight the Japanese.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This is an amazing story about one of the first volunteers to go to China to help fight the Japanese. I had no idea any of this happened. On top of this he is from my hometown and is considered the first US ace of WW2.

from Wikipedia

Major Arthur Chin (Chinese: 陳瑞鈿; pinyin: Chén Ruìtián; Cantonese: Chin Shui-Tin; October 23, 1913 - September 3, 1997) was an American pilot and a Second Sino-Japanese War fighter ace.

Biography

Chin was born in Portland, Oregon to a Chinese father of Cantonese origin and a mother of Peruvian background. Motivated by the Japanese invasion of China, Chin enrolled in flight school in 1932. Along with 15 other Chinese Americans, he left for China and joined the Guangdong Provincial Air Force as the first and original group of American volunteer combat aviators, and ultimately integrated into the central government's air force under the KMT. After completion of additional aerial-gunnery training in Munich Germany, he returned to China for combat duty in which he was credited with destroying nine enemy aircraft between 1937-1939. In 1939, while flying a Gloster Gladiator, the fighter in which he scored 6.5 of his 8.5 aerial victories, he was hit by enemy fire and forced to bail out of his burning aircraft, and although he parachuted to safety, he suffered serious burn injuries. Nevertheless, after several years of surgery and recovery, and an escape from the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong,[1] he returned to China in 1944 to fly supplies over the Himalayas, a route known as the "Hump".

Chin is recognized as America's first ace in World War II. A half-century after the war ended, the U.S. government recognized Chin as an American veteran by awarding him the Distinguished Flying Cross. About a month after Chin died, on October 4, 1997, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the American Airpower Heritage Museum in Midland, Texas as the first American ace.

After his aviation career finished, Chin was a postal worker in his hometown of Portland. On January 29, 2008, Congressman Representative David Wu (D-Oregon) introduced House Resolution 5220 to name a United States Post Office in Aloha, Oregon after Major Arthur Chin as the "Major Arthur Chin Post Office Building", it was unanimously approved by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. President Bush signed it into law on May 7, 2008 。

Blundered yesterday. Pretty dire result today. There could be a silver lining but I'll have to wait two days to find out while I kick myself repeatedly.

China: The troops went forward toward Chihkiang together, making good pace down the gray road. Four units in particular made very good pace as I forgot they were armor (since they just arrived here two days ago and I haven't had any tank units with these forces previously) and I set them to 'move' instead of 'combat.'

They shocked into Chihkiang in the wrong mode and without support and were shredded by the defenders. Happily, none of them vaporized, and the recon battalions might be combat able within the week. The Mobile Infantry Rgts will take a LOT longer. There goes my vehicle pool again!

I despaired at first about the coming attack, as I'd counted on these to give some extra punch within the larger force. I thought a bit more and realized that this could actually help the divisions and brigades coming in two days by depleting supplies in the defending units to the point that they're ineffective. They certainly didn't take much damage, and won't be very disrupted, but maybe the loss of supply will make some difference. I'll have to wait a few agonizing days to find out.

At Urumchi 7 more CAF fighters escorted the bombers, 3 I-15 and 4 I-16. On the day 2 I-15 and 1 I-16 were lost, as well as 1 SB-III and 2 to ops. A few more days and another attack here.

subs: Stingray is again attacked near Carnarvon. No hits, but good to see we sighted it first.

Burma: Recon shows a masive reorganization of air forces going on. The forward bases have emptied but 123 fighters are at Calcutta with 87 bombers. Dimapur still shows 62 fighters. Chittagong and Imphal, as well as Ledo are vacant. I don't have the bomber force here to take advantage, and new groups might arrive tomorrow anyway.

Bombing will be extremely rare in this theater from the IJ side for a while. More recon, more air support, and a release of bombers from the China theatre will be necessary before any real effort can be put to hitting Allied bases. This is fine until the Tojo arrives, as the Oscar does a bit better en masse in a defensive role here right now.

I've got a bad feeling about this. I'd be worried about the defenders shock attacking this turn to rout your armour, but perhaps the threat of your follow up troops arriving next turn will stop the trigger being pulled. How much AV are you planning on crossing with again? [sm=character0077.gif]

obvert -> RE: Wild Sheep's Chase - obvert (J) vs JocMeister (A) (4/12/2012 11:59:47 PM)

The main body is just over 4,800 AV, mostly good divisions without much disablement. Two Army HQs, the Southern and China Command, are in range, and I think 3 smaller HQs are here as well.

It's a risk. If he does shock, at least more supply will go. I know even with the 40k supply every two weeks I've been dumping into Shanghai, I'm still in the red the day after a battle or even a big bombardment.

It's been decided, and I have a bad feeling too, but I'm not turning back now. If I don't go those troops will definitely be crushed once they try to move back.

Grouper attacks a resource convoy near Truk but misses. During the past seven months of running three convoys of AKLs to Nauru and Ocean, 2 PBs each as escort, I've only lost I think 3 AKLs here. I must have sent back 300,000 or more in resources. Plus, I'd rather these be a target in the area than the tankers and other valuable ships nearby.

So Pac: The KB groups have all been resized this month and just now are getting close to full of pilots. The quality will not be pre-war stander across the board. Some of these guys will have to sink or swim.

Just saw a show on the BOB last night. They said an RAF fighter pilots had about 50% odds of survival through the first 5 combat missions flown. If they made it past that it went up to 90% per mission after that. That'll be the case with about 5 fighter pilots in each of the KB groups, which are at about 45/70 as they enter the groups. Just flying CAP will get the exp up soon, I'm sure.

I seem to have enough DB and TB pilots for now. Haven't used many of those yet.

China: All other units are moving smoothly toward Chihkiang in combat mode. I made sure of this, double and triple checking I got all of them. Tomorrow will be the day.

Only 5 I-16s today at Urumchi. I think the CAF is running out of fighters, maybe pilots as well. 3 more shot down plus 1 SB-III. 2 disabled squads from the bombing. Tomorrow another attack will go forward.

Burma: Supply is starting to pour into Rangoon now. It's up to 37,542, and should get another 10k. Hopefully some of this will spread up to where the fighter groups need it.

China: At Chihkiang 4,932 AV came across the river today against 2,742 of Chinese troops with level 3 forts. Engineers reduced fort sot 2 before combat, and the result was a 1 to 1! [:)] The IJA suffered 5 to 1 casualties ([:(]) and will need some serious healing time. Reinforcements are nearing the area though and another attack of about 4,000 AV might be possible within the week.

This is better than I'd feared, although the results might have been better with those armored units involved, I think. You never know though what the supply situation might have been. Troops will start shifting to rear positions to recover while others will move up now that the crossing has been achieved.

China (continued):

In the plains north of Chungking IJA troops have been streaking across toward Neikiang. The main tank force of 500 AV plus the 41st Division and the 4th Ind. Mixed Brigade will DA tomorrow there. The main body of 4,500 AV is in the road crossing in the center of the plain moving toward Chengtu. The arty and two engineer units are straggling in the rough hex near Kienko and will be in the clear tomorrow, trying to move to Chengtu quickly.

Only two I-16 showed up at Urumchi today and both were lost. The Oscars finally got a good shot at the bombers and took down one.

On the ground the tanks DAed and got another 1 to 2 but disabled a good number of Chinese troops. Slow going, but supply seems to be steady, and if that continues I think this base will fall within a few weeks.

Getting a 1:1 was great, but the disablements are always the killer. About 25% of your strength. Too bad the other 4000AV are a week away yet. Any chance the Chinese can reinforce before you do? I think if I ever try a river assault again, I will plan it so my reinforcements arrive exactly one day after the initial attack to take full advantage of the bridgehead before the enemy can recover. Nice job getting across, now to seal the deal. [sm=00000036.gif]

Have you gotten over 20k in supply at Rabaul?? If so, were you able to draw replacement aircraft??

ASW - if you sight a sub, try narrowing the arc to cover just that hex and adjust range to cover it only. Leave it like this for a few days to see if it is in a patrol zone to get a better hit next time. I use Jakes and soon to be Norm to find the subs, and then Helen to attack.

I think if I ever try a river assault again, I will plan it so my reinforcements arrive exactly one day after the initial attack to take full advantage of the bridgehead before the enemy can recover. Nice job getting across, now to seal the deal. [sm=00000036.gif]

Unfortunately my reinforcements are only about 1,500 AV and the other portion of the 4,000 will be the good bits from this army that have recovered, plus a few from previous attacks that have now recovered and have been holding the other bridgehead north of Chihkiang. I simply don't have enough in China to have another 4k AV of fresh troops come in that quickly. I'm still suffering from an extreme need of more PPs.

I haven't still bought any divisions out of Manchuria. There have been too many smaller nuts, commander changes for subs and combat ships and air groups. All of the little piddly costs. But this is why they are in the game I guess. To make us realize that these things wouldn't be immediate or easy. I hope to now begin accumulating points to pull divisions, maybe 3-4 by the end of 42.

If you have made this much progress without buying units out of Manchuria don't sweat it! I misunderstood your post about the 4000 AV, but still another 1500 AV and how ever many squads recover from disablements should still pack a punch. Providing he doesn't reinforce before you do and you bomb the crap out of them you should still be in good shape.

Do you have any qualms or house rules against low level ground bombing? I'm involved in another PBEM as the Allies and I'm getting nuked from the air with altitudes as low as 2000k in China. Since the Chinese lack AA these bombers are hardly touched. If you have no qualms about doing it, bombers that low cause significant damage even in rough terrain. Something to think on, however, in my case I'll have no problem using Allied bombers at low altitudes when I get the chance...reap the whirlwind and all that. [:D]

I'm like you on PP's. Buying out a division is nice, but often times you need the PP's elsewhere. PP's spent improving leaders and buying out smaller support units is probably more beneficial over the long run than what one division can do for you. 1800 PP's goes a long way when spread around. How many SC's may become submarine killers with the right Captain and skill/aggression level, or that Betty unit that improves remarkably with that high skilled and aggressive leader that actually gets the aircraft into the air and attacking effectively?
