USSAmerica -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (2/8/2012 8:14:08 PM)

From an AP story about drilling down to an Antarctic lake below the ice crust:

"The Russian team hit the lake Sunday at the depth of 12,366 feet (3,769 meters) about 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) southeast of the South Pole in the central part of the continent."

What's wrong with this sentence? [8|]

Oh, snap! New page. [8D]

Terminus -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (2/8/2012 8:15:09 PM)

Apart from being amazingly bad syntactically?

I fixed that for you. [:'(]

Fixed what? There was nothing wrong with my original post. Nothing whatsoever.

And even if he did make a mistake, it's gone now!You can't prove a thing! [:D]

USSAmerica -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (2/8/2012 8:59:04 PM)

Is no one curious how you could possibly travel 800 miles southeast of the South Pole?

How did they figure SOUTHEAST?[&:]

bradfordkay -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (2/8/2012 9:22:54 PM)

If you're at the South Pole, isn't North the only direction you can go?

Apollo11 -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (2/8/2012 9:34:14 PM)

Hi all,

Tomorrow morning they expect -18 degrees Centigrade here... it is bright night and full moon was yesterday... bitterly cold... [X(]

Somebody, who is map challenged, looked at a south polar projection of Antarctica, noted where the South Pole is on the map, and then determined the drilling site was 800 miles "down and to the right" of the SP. [:D]

And that is, of course, SouthWest... [8D]

Of course you could just say north of the south pole near the 107th meridian. Actually, 78°27′51.92″S latitude 106°50′14.38″E longitude to be precise.

Cold? That ain't cold. That's pretty cozy around here.[8D] -18C was yesterday morning here and it felt pretty darned good. Now -35C to -44C, that's getting well into uncomfortable range especially with any sort of breeze.[;)] Seen it -100F with wind chill. That's a real B*tch. Stalingrad weather.[:)]

Well, there ARE two South Poles, you know. They're not at the same place.

Trust me. If the person who screwed up this story looked at a map and saw TWO South Poles, they would still be twitching in a corner somewhere and the story would have never seen the light of day. Probably would have been for the best. [:D]

Well, misinformed "journalists" are nothing new...

In other news, I just picked up a new iPad app:

- Dinosaurs - CHECK

- Computer animations of same - CHECK

- Narration by Stephen Fry - CHECK

Yep, seems to hit all buttons.

Two new exercises at the gym today. Pain, I am in it![X(]
